Title: Punic Wars Rampant
Post by: bibopx on January 08, 2017, 11:41:14 AM
Hi there,

my first post here to borrow with you one of my project for this year.

I received Lion Rampant for Christmas and i'll use it to play Punic Wars.

I'll make to main warbands, one Carthaginian and one Republican Roman. And next these two, the other nationalities like Spanish, Gauls and Greeks.

Carthaginian List:

- 12 Libyan skirmishers
- 24 Punic Lancers
- 24 Militians
- 12 Veterans
- 6 Punic Cavalry
- 1 Elephant

As you can see, I double the number for each unit to have a good looking unit.

The first two minis were painted last year, only a re-based work.

A past issue of soldiers and strategy had an article with a punic war list in it.
I'll see if I can find it.

WSS 80, I believe. Looks to give a 1st Punic War spin to the rules, so it basically gives a couple of rules for Romans, Elephant rules, and gives you suggestions on how to represent the various allies. It's a good article, but it's also a restrained article - very much gets to the point. A couple of short scenarios are there too, which are a nice touch.

I'm definitely going to keep and eye on this - I'm very keen on getting some Punic Wars gaming in in the form of either the Rampant rules or in Saga - or both, ideally. Probably will go with the Victrix boxes myself.

I've thought about doing this, I'm surprised more people haven't taken advantage of all those lovely Ancient figures out there to do a number of small forces. It would be like when DBA first came out.

Hi,

thanks for your comment.

I have the same feeling, why we didn't see a lot of ancient warbands? I did research through internet to find some pics.

I didn't found a lot of them.

I downloaded WSS80 and WSS81, good inspiration inside them with rule for elephant. I'll give a try.

This week I worked on my elf warband so just time to try one lancer, still in wip.

I have a fairly large collection of Punic Wars figures.  My son is painting a War of the Roses army and he has the Lion Rampant rulebook.  He is interested to give it a try - his partially completed warband against some of my Carthaginians.  I know...(shudder)...a horrible anachronism...  But I also want him to be able to play with his figures now rather than wait until he has two warbands ready to go.

All that to say yes, I'd love to see your Punic War unit definitions for Lion Rampant!  In particular the Carthaginians, Numidians, Spanish and Gauls.

Seems very interesting and enthralling. Do normally check out descriptions by some ancient historians?
