Title: IronClad Miniatures Naval Brigade Boarding Party
Post by: JollyBob on 21 February 2009, 05:57:55 PM
The slow, steady slide into VSF continues inexorably.  ;D

I finished these fellas the night before last, just had time to photograph them today. Hope you like them. Extra big thanks to everyone who posted on my thread regarding rank markings, I think I've got them sorted now.

Really nice minis to paint, these. And I only noticed after I'd finished that the guy with the helmet under his arm looks a dead ringer for the bloke from the Mighty Boosh. Hence he is now Warrant Officer Moon.

Cheers for looking!  :)

Great stuff JB. I had never envisaged these as naval myself so they came as a bit of a surprise. Wish I had succumb and bought some in York now.

Crazy Seaman Ned Kelly meets the trench raiders of Mars mallarchy ;D

Thanks very much guys!  :)

Crazy Seaman Ned Kelly meets the trench raiders of Mars mallarchy ;D

Actually, I think they and their steam tank (on the paint desk now) will form the core of my exploration team for Stargate:1895.

Heck, if I keep it small, I might even finish this project!  ;D

Absolutely brilliant! Well done JB, I had another "laugh out loud" moment at that!

They are rather spiffing figures and I look forward to seeing them in action in a pukka VSF game report.

Nah, the eyes aren't tiny enough for him to be Moon. He'd be destroyed in a squinting contest...

Nifty stuff. 'Stargate: 1895’ has me very interested!

Simply superb!  :-*
Excellent paintjob!

While seeing these, a conversion idea sprang into my mind... o_o
Those helmets aren't my cup of tea, but with a simple headswap however...

Thanks again everyone.  :)  Unfortunately the chances of using them in a game are slim, as I don't really know of any players round here (and the ones I do know are effin' goobers). They are more for my own amusement really.

Stargate:1895 will still feature the Goa'uld as bad guys (assuming my order of not-Jaffa'a from Sheild Wall ever actually turns up  ::)), its just that the gate was found a few years early by Her Imperial Majesty's forces in Egypt. General Gordon now commands the new Ministry of Interstellar Transport, Technology, Exploration and New Species (M.I.T.T.E.N.S.) facility under Salisbury Plain.

Lets see how those snake-eyed space Fuzzies like a taste of British pluck!

Lovely stuff JB. I've been trying to think up a colour scheme for my boarding party and by jove you've got it!

I'm in the same boat as you, no one around here plays VSF either so I have to save up my pennies and travel down to London to give Malamute a damn good thrashing................. and have a game or two.  lol

Thunderchicken,
You're very welcome to come here to game.  Just had the extension fitted on the table - 5' x 8' now.  All I need is a gamer or two to come round and help me use it!!

Nice work chap! :)
I am thinking of doing some more troops to add to the boarding party possibly armed with shotguns, Nock seven barrelled gun etc , any suggestions are most welcome.

How about some boarding pikes and grappling lines for some mid-air boarding actions, and a few naval ratings to operate pintle mounted MGs or light guns?

I also think a few of these chaps with short range rocket backpacks, to give them the ability to jump from their own deck to that of the enemies, would be useful too.

While the Nock volley gun is a very cool weapon, it was dismissed in 1804 due to it being largely useless. However, in the later Victorian years it could have been refined into a much more efficient weapon. Mainly one that didn't smash the shoulder of whoever fired it.... Also, it wouldn't be a flintlock gun anymore which would negate the other Naval worry of setting fire to the rigging. A slightly altered VSF version would be cool.

Post by: Gluteus Maximus on 25 February 2009, 03:46:11 PM
Good thinking, Dean!

As they are so obviously VSF, they should have some snazzy [experimental?] VSF weapons. Definitely some sort of upgraded blunderbus type thingy or how about a steam-powered portable machine gun? I'm thinking something like VSF versions of the ones in "Predator" or "Aliens". Grenades would be pretty essential too - maybe with the figure also carrying some sort of pistol.

As they are already armoured, how about one carrying a large shield, similar to the things modern police use when busting into drug-dealers' houses etc. After all, the first man in is pretty vulnerable, so having this would give him and his comrades a better chance of getting into the enemy vessel.

I love the helmets, by the way. A sort of cross between a medieval great helm and Ned Kelly  lol

I likethe nock idea Hmm... how about a breach-loading Nock mkII - firing say 7 rounds of .455 pistol? You could stop nigh on anything with one of those. Or maybe doing something similar hooked up to a steam generator (Seperate backpack casting?) letting us choose between a pseudo nock and some sort of steam powered gatling rifle? :D
I also really liked the flame thrower idea you mentioned at revillie II.
And of course, the repeating blunderbuss from the steam automata are really cool...

I like the ballisitc shield idea, as well as things such as the grappling hooks etc. Perhaps 2 packs - 1 with boarding gear (boarding hook, 2x grappeling iron, grenade/dinamite pose) & 1 with the special weapons (Nock, Shotgun, Flamer, MG?) might be called for?

Thanks Ironcladman! I'm glad you like them.  :)

I think some kind of support weapon would be great, although I would go for a repeating shotgun of some kind. Something like this:

While a General Clockwork Minigun (joke copyright R. Rankin) would be awesome, its not what I would envisage for a boarding party - not exactly maneouverable. I'd rather something short, punchy and capable of clearing or subduing a room in one blast before the wielder moves on.

The Nock volley gun isn't that big. For anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about, it's the gun Sgt Harper uses in Sharp.

Post by: JollyBob on 26 February 2009, 02:33:07 PM
Yeah, I know the Knock is smaller than a gatling gun, but I think its too firmly entrenched as a Napoleonic weapon in my mind. Fair enough a MkII would do the job, but I kinda like the idea of a repeater.

Anyway, whatever it ends up as, I'm sure Ironcladman will do us proud.   :)

The Admiralty has taken note of your suggestions gentlemen and I think that the boarding party with grappling irons and hooks is a definite and for clearing decks etc I think I will go down the route of a hand cranked mini-gatling gun and shotgun for the close quarter support. Also one or 2 of the other ideas are being looked into by our research and development branch but due to the offical secrets act I cannot say any more.

Exactly, spot on Mr Ironcladman, too many Prussian, French, Russian and Japanese sympathisers around here. We don't want that sort of information falling into the wrong hands Eh What? ;) :)

Precisely Mr Malamute. Rest assured that those foreign blighters will be in for a nasty shock as there are several new inventions and machines in progress as we speak and will soon be ready to help defend the Empire (not the Hackney Empire) Once again Brittania will rule the wave and sky! Hurrah!
