Title: Some larking around with Sci Fi (Some 15mm figures this time)
Post by: Grumbledook on 17 January 2017, 12:56:19 AM
Here I go again attempting to do something other that 10mm fantasy!

I've been playing around with some of my plastic kits. These are a selection of 40k stuff, fantasy, medieval and Napoleonic and I've cobbled together a couple of figures for what I'm hoping will be a Science Fantasy type world where adventurers explore the wreckage of huge spaceships which crashed on the planet thousands of years ago. There's more wordy stuff on my blog if anyone fancies a gander. Also, I'm quite keen on the Science Fantasy concept since I hope it will motivate me to start getting more of my neglected collection painted.

First up is Janet:

Second is Travis 'Stonetape' Anderson:

Planning to get these chaps painted as well as an undead troll thing..... hey, surely it's sci fi if it's on a crashed spaceship!

Janet looks great. Travis is pretty darn cool too. Science fantasy is all the rage around these parts lately. Looking forward to seeing more.

Cool idea! I though of something similar as a project myself, after reading a Doctor Who novel were the spaceships were lost technology, so space battles were all sword and pistol boarding actions. Can't remember the name of the book right now, sorry.

Where did you get Janet's head?

It looks quite promising for a project I'm determined not to start until other things are out the way ;D

Thanks

Cheers folks. I think I'm going to have to find a copy of that Dr. Who book! In fact, I've got a 7TV figure that looks a bit like the John Pertwee Doctor so I'll have to paint him up and use him as an some kind of heroic wizard or something. Nice model actually:

http://www.beastsofwar.com/scaler/scaler.php?src=http://www.beastsofwar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Hugo-Solomon-and-Pandora-King.jpg&w=250&q=75 (http://www.beastsofwar.com/scaler/scaler.php?src=http://www.beastsofwar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Hugo-Solomon-and-Pandora-King.jpg&w=250&q=75)

Janet's head is one of the pulp scale female heads from Statuesque Miniatures, not cheap but they are very lovely (I think they were made on computer, but I'm not sure, I hope they were made by a human though):

http://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/c/4544547/1/pulp-scale-accessories.html (http://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/c/4544547/1/pulp-scale-accessories.html)

My 4 year old got them for my birthday, as you can imagine she was quite surprised by her choice of gift. She was planning to give me a duck.

Janet's body is from a Perry Miniatures medieval mercenary, they seem to scale really well for female figures since they're nowhere near as bulky as some other ranges.

Hope the info is useful, that for looking!

It is, thanks.

I was actually looking through the Statuesque site at the weekend and managed to miss that one. I'll look a bit more closely next time :)

No, actually, it was a 5th Doctor book (I don't go in for that "New Who" BS).

I also have that 3rd Doctor, he's a beauty.

Thanks chaps. Ended up falling for the Gangs of Commorragh boxed game. Seems good, but I'm only in it for the toys! Of which there seem to be quite a few to diversify my piles of parts.

After a bit of messing about I blu-tacked together a new addition to my Science Fantasy setting:

Okay, I know he looks like a mashup between a cowboy and Frank-N-Furter but you get the idea. I hope. I'll be sculpting some raggeddy fabric onto those (surprisingly lithe) legs of his to make it a bit more balanced.

Thanks for looking.

Hah! Quite an image.

I recently bought a couple of Scale 75 paints, since I was getting a bit underwhelmed with my painting. Also, sometimes a change is liberating so I thought I'd post up a picture of a couple of 15mm figures painted as samples.

The one on the left uses the scale 75 paints and the one on the right a combination of GW and Vallejo. I know the colour schemes are different, but I only really wanted to get some new quite bright colours since I've been drowning in a sea of Browns and Greys for years now.

The chap on the left looks like he's wearing a ninja turtle costume  :? , but I'm planning to use these with This is Not a Test rules so maybe he's part of a kids t.v. themed gang.

Looking forward to getting some new paint onto the huge 28mm figures now!

Thanks for looking.

Another offering in my hopelessly attempt to actually focus on a coherent project. This time we have a pre-Magnus Thousand Sons legionary. Nearly finished, he just needs a bit of detailing and base.

The basic idea is that these chaps missed the Party-on-Prospero and have since re-evaluated their goals in life, there's a whole load of writey stuff on my blog if anyone fancies a look.

Since it takes longer than forever for me to put plastic stuff together, then fill, then file, then fill again only to realise I've used the wrong parts ............ I'm getting some Ion Age 15mm Prydians ready to play the part of some (Loyalist?) Iron Warriors, or Death Guard, or someone else. I'm also making a 15mm scale Rhino out of cork and plasticard (because it's a very cute apc) which is proving to be good fun!

Thanks for looking.

Cheers vodkafan, I'm still umming and ahhhhing over how mucky he should look so I've put him to the side for a while.

In the meantime, however, I've been trawling through my 15mm drawer for my Iron Warriors project and found this lot:

The soldiers are Ion Age Prydian Retained troops and the Dreadnought is a modified Warmachine light warjack, not quite sure which one but I think he fits the bill. The dread was modified with a Skitarii head, a Genestealer Cults mining laser and a powerfist - still needs a fair bit of work but you get the idea.

And the beginnings of the first of my scratchbuilt rhino's.

I've cut out some more Rhino bits but I just need to man up and glue them on.

Here's a finished squad of Iron Warriors:

I'm also painting up a sample 28mm marine as a Death Guard. Trying to go from a yellowy brown up to a bone white for the main colour and I'm looking forward to playing with corrosion and muck which I've never relly tried before. Will post a pic once I've done some more.

Thanks for looking.

Love what you've done with the Ion Age minis, will definitely get some for my 15mm gaming project (that is, when I've reduced my lead mountain somewhat...)
Title: Re: Some larking around with Sci Fi

Cheers Ockman, the orange guy is indeed from the Khurasan spy-fi range. I bought a few packs of them a couple of years ago and I gave them the role of Imperial Guard (in classic jumpsuit style), great models as always.

Latest larking is 28mm again. My attention deficit once again cropped up and I grew bored of the pre Magnus Thousand Son, it looked fine but just not that interesting. Instead I'm going to have a go at some 30k Death Guard, they might be more fun to paint and I'm going to try a looser painting style and not be quite so tight and tidy. Also I get to have a go at really dirtying them up.

Here's the base layer:

I've had a go at starting with a yellowy brown and going up to a bone white instead of the usual white. I recently read a great piece of advice which I found quite inspiring when painting and converting marines. It said to treat each figure as an individual personality with their own history as opposed to seeing them as a mass of carbon copies. So, I've resolved to create a squad in which each figure will be converted to some extent and here's the first:

Thanks for the kind words folks.

Have done a bit more 28mm stuff but today it's a project update on the 15mm Rhino:

Okay, the little chap's a bit wonky but I have a pretty low patience threshold for scratchbuilding (particularly with plasticard since I never manage to cut anything straight or square). There's still bits to do like the rear, roof hatches and exhausts but the tracks and wheels were what I was dreading so I'm glad they're out of the way.

Thanks for looking

P.S. In additional 15mm news; I'm starting to organise a bunch of baddies (in the form of Ion Age Khanate - evil/chaotic stand-in's by my reckoning) as well as some more Iron Warriors. I want more tanks too.

Finally got a bit more work done on my Death Guard:

Had my first real go at weathering and pait chipping and am reasonably satisfied with the results, any suggestions and advice are more than welcome! I did find the chipping a bit of a struggle and any tips to make it look better would be great. I'm pleased with the armour colour, almost the colour of nicotine and coffee stained teeth.

He still needs some work on the base as well as maybe a little soot and mud.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks 3 fingers, I'm thinking the fuedal world/archeotech idea could be a setting for some Shadow War campaigns with battles over lost technology and so on. Which sort of led me to my next test painting to figure out what armour I can tolerate painting!

This time it's an Iron Hand:

I was originally going to make him a Death Guard, buuuuuuuuut he frankly looked quite Iron Handy. Now, I've never been interested in them and I normally hate painting black so I was quite surprised with how much I enjoyed making and painting him. I think there could be quite alot of fun to be had with the astartes/mechanicum mashup...... throw in the "Motive Force" hocus pocus and they could turn out to be quite a bit of fun.

Oh my, I must've been enjoying myself as I even managed to finish the base!

Thanks for looking.

6mm miniatures have always been on my wish list of things I've always wanted to have a go at organising and painting. After all, Epic Space Marine was the first boxed game that arrived in my eager paws, but after putting the set together and palying a few inept games I never really got into it.......... I loved the models, but was always a bit intimidated by the sheer tininess of them.

Well here I am more that 20 years later and I've decided to go through some of the impulse buys I've made over the years and feel a bit of a project coming on.

Firstly, for the curious among you I've taken a couple of pictures showing some examples of the various ranges and their comparetive sizes:

from the left we have: Epic Armageddon Predator (turretless), OM (Onslaught Minis) Corrupted Athena, OM Athena Defender, DiD (Defeat in Detail) Novan Elite, OM Hellborn Cultist, MG (Microworld Games) Cyclopean Demon, OM Minerva, OM Nemesis Bike.

Again from the left: SG (Spartan Games) Faust Battle Robot, OM Athena Defender, DiD Novan Elite, EW (Exodus Wars) Edenite Jump Infantry - now I will have to do a Night Lords contingent - and finally the Hellborn Cultist again.

So, a nice selection which cover the gamut of any of the forces I'm interested in.... but I think I'll be starting with the Mechanicus. I think the OM Hellborn Cultists are ideal for Skitarii, tech-guard or whatever and I've been collecting a variety of Spartan Games' Dystopian Wars miniatures which I think will look the part:

Here are a bunch of Skitarii ready for painting and Behind them is a Star Wars Republic gunship (I think?) which I'm going to modify with bits from the Skitarii sprues to make it more Mechanicumy.

Oh, and some of the Firestorm Planetfall and other Star Wars stuff I have is earmarked for Astartes Legions.

Thanks for looking!

Post by: fred on 21 May 2017, 08:39:56 AM
Interesting project - looking forward to seeing more.

The various new 6mm sci fi manufacturers produce some great looking models - the hardest part is knowing what scales with other stuff. Some of the Dystopian Wars stuff works well, I have airships and big guns as part of my Squat force.

The output of Vanguard / DiD is great - but their vehicle sizes can be a little large, compared with the original Epic stuff. (Not that all the GW epic stuff scaled that well within ranges anyway).

As to painting the little blighters - go simple and bold is my advice. Remember you are painting bases of troops, and you need to be able to tell them apart on the table.

Thanks, I'm hoping to start some painting this week but as you say I need to be brave with the highlights if I want to see them.

I was always dubious of 10 marines in a Rhino at epic scale so I'm happy to use proxies. I'm quite keen on the tanks from the Planetfall range, they have quite a chunky feel which I think could suit the big astartes figures. Need to start scrubbing some resin!

Not much painting, but I did get the infantry primed.

However, I fancied a distraction and started fiddling about with a converting an Epic scale Primarch, Vulkan in this case, based on a 10mm Orc. He's still a work in progress but you should get the idea.

Yeah, I know, huge skull. But hey, make-believe and all that. Just waiting for the putty to cure then I can get a head in there, fire off the top of his armour, a cape and detailing. I added the other chaps for scale comparison so, as you can see, he's a big bastard. If he ends up looking okay I think I'll have a go at building one from scratch.

Thanks for looking.

Woah, that scale is completely inappropriate for the actual size of the model. Apologies, I'm trying to do this on my phone again so I will attempt to rectify when I can get to a computer.

Cheers fred, I always have a bit of trouble photographing things that small and the massive photo isn't terribly flattering!

Managed to paint up the very modest start of my epic Mechanicus force, a woefully understrength unit of skitarii:

Who, since actually looking at a reference sheet, need at least the addition of this lot to make them useable:

D'oh!

And they still need another two stands of infantry, but I think I'll use the servitors from the Defeat in Detail Cybershadows specialists box to keep things visually interesting.

Thanks for looking.

Two game systems with very different miniature requirements, although if I go for Epic I'll always have enough to play Horizon Wars..... double win?

I have painted some more Mechanicus infantry, but no photo yet.

Instead I messed around with some 15mm stuff. I sat down one evening with some cork tile, some awesome GZG pieces, scrap and had a go at some scenery:

I was even able to paint one.......... the simplest one:

I'm also working on a 15mm gang for any sci-fi or post apocalypse rules. Based on a band of mercenaries who have evolved into a courier service and are lavishly equipped, they're also utter bastards whose company tagline is “No less trustworthy than our competitors”. Charming.

Here is the leader of the group, the Route Manager.

He's an Ion Age Shia Khan legionary, who I've been umm-ing and ahh-ing about painting since I wasn't to sure how he'd turn out. I think he's come out ok.

Slightly more words on the blog if anyone's interested.

Thanks for looking

Errrr, August last year?! Oh my. Having made a resolution to paint my damn models (details on the blog for anyone interested), I'm looking forward to getting much more done and this will continue to be my repository for all things non 3mm.

Here are some more of the 15mm Shia Khan figures:

Once again, I think these came out better than I had expected since they look a bit more clunky in their unpainted state. I prefer the desert/post-apocalypse base and am now repainting the rest of the 15mm figures to match...... shouldn't take long ;)

Thanks for looking.
