Found a good deal on some plastic flowers / ferns at the local craft store. They always put last season on sale for up to 70% off so for a few dollars I get all I can use. Have to pick and dig around for stuff thats seems to be useable from all the that is offered. Not finding much to do with silk flower parts currently though.

Time was about 10 minutes per trees, materials were plastic fern bits, left over rubber coated wire from central part of the plastic flowers and hot glue.
And there you have it.

Thank you Alfrik, for another excellent explanation of how you do it! But I have a seperate question for you . . .
You mention casting your own hot glue tubes. Could you, would you, please post details of _how_ ???
Thanks!
