Has anyone experienced vallejo paints being over-glossy?
Some of mine are, but it seems to be random ones... Some game colour, some model colour.
At first I thought it was just the model colours - several of the model colours I have are very glossy, but the game colours I mostly use are not. So I made a note to go for the game colour in future.
But then I recently switched form the MODEL colour black (which was fine) to the GAME colour black, which is crazy glossy....
Anyone else experience this?

Which way up are you storing them?
I always keep Vallejos upside down and just use the pigment - never had a problem. If you are keeping them 'the right way up' it is probably simply a case of the carrier not being properly mixed with the pigment.

I too have experienced how some, seemingly randomly selected Vallejo paints are strangely glossy even when dry.
I'll definitely give storing them upside down a go!

What Dag says or shake them hard :p

I have with a few, sometimes it is cured with a good shake or mix, but I've had a few of the greens and Orange Brown be a specific problem. The greens I kind of expect to be trouble as they often have a high degree of yellow in them.
The Orange Brown was fixed by... getting another bottle...I'd tried everything with it- they are not that expensive after all, especially if you avoid the sellers that sell them for 3 quid each or more.
Don't forget to try adding a spot of flat base to the paint on the pallet, before you buy replacement bottles too.

I have had the same problem with Vallejo's black yes. Both model and game color, where a new bottle might suddenly be super glossy. Solved it by making sure to matte varnish.
-
It happens sometimes. I add Tamiya X-21 flat base to all my paints on the palette to keep everything matt whilst I work.

Yes, I've had a few dodgy bottles down the years - US Olive drab, Ivory, a Prussian Blue, a few others... All resolutely shiny, no matter how much mixing and upside down storage... Too much carrier and hardly any pigment in the bottle I think... Just the occasional Friday afternoon special / lapse in quality control.
95% of Vallejo paints I've used are satisfyingly flat matt (providing you keep them upside down and use the thick stuff, not the thin... ) But you do come across the occasional rogue bottle.
(Unlike the 'Coat D'Arms' range, which some people claim to love, but I found to all be universally shiny, despite purporting to be matt... ::) )

While talking about Vallejo and glossyness. I just swapped over to their Polyurethane Varnish, from the normal stuff, and found the matt one to be very glossy still. In fact, just a hint less glossy then the gloss. Anyone have better experience with this product? Should I try another bottle, or look for another product?

Yeah, Coat d'Arms paints are generally rather shiny. I used to have a full fantasy set of colours years ago but threw them out because of that. Same with the Foundry paints I had, but they were even shinier. Glad I didn't pay for them. Of course these days with adding matt medium to everything it doesn't matter. Wish I'd found the Tamiya stuff earlier on.
Basically all paints can be a bit shiny and crap at times. Sometimes it's whole brands, or just certain colours, or totally random like with Vallejo's black.

Vallejo black is always a problem I've never had a Matt one yet

Tamiya X-21 flat base
Got a reliable on-line source for it?
My local hobby shop 'keeps' it but 9 times out of 10 they're OOS and I keep running low >:(

Ah, it's not just me then!
Solved it by making sure to matte varnish.
Of course, that happens in the end stages so it's not a problem for the finished product. It's just annoying when part of the model is super-shiny whilst I'm still trying to paint it.
I'll try storing them upside-down, though that does mean I'll need to look for a new paint rack!!! (any ideas?)

Wonderland Models (https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/tamiya-mini-x-21-flat-base/).
I order 6 to 10 pots at a time every few months and never had any delays with an order. :)

The Game Color line is meant to match the old GW line both in color and in matte-ness. GW paints have always been a "semi-satin", having a very smooth finish, but not truly gloss. The Model Color black is a wonderful, dense matte black. But the Game Color is more like GW's Chaos Black, which is also dense, but almost a semi-gloss.
