While on a trip to the local Dollar Tree a couple weeks ago, I noticed some Barbie-like Mermaid Dolls in the toy section, and was struck by the intricate molded detail on their tails. Having had just recently read about the upcoming Frostgrave rulebook, Ghost Archipelago , here on the forum, I thought that these tails might make some sort of neat sculpture or totem of an ancient nautical themed civilization like might be found on the the islands of the G.A. And, so I began my first Ghost Archipelago terrain project.

I started by removing the tails from the upper torso. They are just held in by a plastic button, so easily pull apart. I then created a base out of an old CD and a couple 1.5 inch washers. Next, I cut the tails down so they would sit, and cross, at just the right angle. After that, I cut off part of one fin to help give that ancient crumbling look. I then glued the tails to the base, and also glued a pattern of plaster hexes into the center to help hide the hole in the CD. I then filled the broken fin piece and the part of the tail where I cut it from with a bit of cork, and then covered the cork over with hot glue. Lastly, I glued the broken fin down, and then covered the hot glue on the broken pieces with some white glue, and sprinkled a little fine sand on it to help the broken stone appearance. After that I covered the base with a coarse sand mix, and then painted the piece.

Very well done. Good idea !

That's an inspired build (great paintjobs too). My daughters will have to lock up thier toys...
-
Love it - Amazing creativity. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the top halves...
-
Heh-heh. Best use of a princess doll that I've ever seen!
-
That's just clever! Thanks for sharing such a neat piece.
-
Thank you all for the kind remarks!
I do have plans for the tops halves, just need to find some time. :)
-
Very cool! Great idea!
-
Wow! I would never have seen that toy and though 'scenery'.
-
Thanks all for the continued comments!
Part of the fun of terrain making for me is discovering unlikely things to use for terrain purposes!
-
That's brilliant and a fantastic looking piece of terrain.
Well done.

I like that wizard/pirate/whatever model there. Where is he from?

Thanks, Redmao!

He is the aptly named "Barnabus Frost" from Reaper http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/pirate/sku-down/77132 (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/pirate/sku-down/77132)
The girl on the left is also Reaper.
I was trying to give the look of a Heritor and his Warden. :)

Thanks!

Awsome idea! I love found object terrain conversions!

Very clever,

I think you win the award for "most creative use of a mermaid tail in a tabletop game" If I hadn't seen where the arche came from I would never guess in a million years that it was made from a cheap plastic mermaid. Well done.

Thank you all for the continued comments!
Jambo- I humbly accept my award, and hope to remain undefeated in my catagory! :D ;)
-
Agreed, very creative use of a plastic toy. Solid 7/7 ;)
-
Awesome, I love it when you see something and it just clicks: project.
Ghost achipello is really on my list. It really creates some lovely warband potential.
-
Thank you folks for the further kind remarks!
I started work on the leftover mermaid torsos this week, so stay tuned for photos of their G. A. Terrain transformation in the next week or two! :)

Wow ! Inspired idea!

So, this past weekend I finished up my second GA terrain piece. After completing the mermaid tail arch last month (shown at the beginning of this thread), a lot of folks asked what I planned to do with the left over mermaid top-halves. I considered this as something of a challenge, and so set about thinking about possible terrain projects to make from partially naked plastic doll halves.
Inspired by the cover of the Ghost Archipelago cover, featuring a band of heroes facing off against a band of snakemen natives, I got the idea to make one of the doll halves into some sort of snake-man goddess idol.
The first thing I needed to find was a suitable snakeman head, so I made another trip to the local Dollar Tree to see what I could find. I wasn't able to find a plastic snake I could use, but I did find a suitable plastic lizard that had just the right head and neck pose to go atop a human torso.
Here is the final result. For the full step-by-step build article, please see my blog: http://onemoregamingproject.blogspot.com/2017/03/dollar-tree-mermaid-ghost-archipelago.html (http://onemoregamingproject.blogspot.com/2017/03/dollar-tree-mermaid-ghost-archipelago.html)

Top notch, original scenery.

Yep, great stuff! (Though now you'll have to do a terrain piece with a lizard's body and doll's head)

Thanks, jp! Yes, I am tempted to try to find a use for the headless lizard body. Though I think putting the second doll's head on it might be too strange even for me! ;D

Thanks, pgmason!
