Post by: Byblos on February 27, 2017, 02:23:47 PM
Hi all !

Do you know where could i found maps or documents about these 2 battles !?

(I have the Ellis book but there is no map)

And do you know where i could find photos or others documents about the MallMiss !? (Other than the Ellis book)

I read some topics about the MallMiss on this forum but maybe some had found new documents since these topics are writed !?

And i you know something about Chanak crisis and the British occupation of North Caucasus after 1918 (maybe books !?) , i'm interested !

Thanks

Byblos , from France

(I'm currently working about Dunsterforce and MallMiss and i will try to make a web-documentary or a little book on these campaigns ...)

I used google maps to get a fell for the region
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Dushak,+Turkmenistan/@37.1994631,60.0262722,372m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x3f6be337750d89e7:0x2b5ea5a7eb6fadda!8m2!3d37.1947859!4d60.0086036
At max magnification on the Earth setting you can follow the railway line R to see the river crossing where the track veers north-E. Above this you can see old ruins and compounds.
Follow the tracks back to the left L and you will see the railway yards and a double road engine shed, and the reversing triangle. The station buildings are the red tin? topped ones and the oldest portion of the settlement will be the greenest and most irregularly shaped nearest the river.
This corresponds with the earliest illustrations

The Soviet era colonisation is to the S West.
The devastation to the rail yards caused by the fighting can be seen

Kaakhkha is a lot harder to distinguish from a modern map...

There are apparently some photos with Teague Jones's account in the British Library...

No worries, Byblos,
Happy to help... nice to find someone with a similar niche interest

I don't think any of Teague Jones's photos are published. The inimitable Cuprum has most of the links photos I've used.
Dunsterforce link you may already know about

fyi, this is my 15mm plan for a refight of Dushak... I've compressed the ground scale considerably to concentrate the buildings together, with the provision of slit trenches, hills etc. around the periphery

plus the usual scrub, hills etc...

Apart from missing out on all the fabulous sculpts, which I have to admit is a big minus  :(, the Back of Beyond really works best in a smaller scale so you can recreate all the vast empty spaces... :D ;D

After a very long interval, I've got out the foamcore and miliput and am working on a 2 road engine shed and station building for my reconstruction of Dushak, based on old images of the station layout.
The engine shed is approx. 200mm x 150mm, easily making it the largest 15mm build I have undertaken in a while...

Splendid.  I thought it was 28mm when I first looked, so no loss of quality there.  Super work!

Great to see you back at this. I always look forward to your builds and Mallmiss and Dunsterforce are favorite actions. This should be really good fun!

An old photo of one of the generic engine sheds that dotted the Trans Caspian railway.
The basic shell is going to be composed of foamcore, with miliput brickwork. The (hopefully) removable roof will be an inverted W of card with card or plastic trusses onto which I will glue embossed corrugated plastic sheet. Some of the detailing is speculative but it should look the business once it is finished

And the basic set up of station building, and ubiquitous fountain in foreground, plus engine shed, usually with water tower, as seen here at Bahmi

Byblos,
hope you don't mind me hijacking your post somewhat... I'd be very interested to see what you've come up with so far.
Judging by rate of progress the engine shed will be another couple of weeks before the build is complete...
Unfortunately I don't have the space to lay out what I've accumulated so far...
On my work table still to scratch build / convert;
complete sufficient track sections and buffer stops
water tower (unless I use another I have already made)
station building
3 x oil tanker wagons
2 x freight wagons
2 x armoured carriages
2 x armoured locomotives
Turcoman cavalry
Turcoman infantry
White artillery

A fair bit to go. I predict it will be around late summer / autumn this year before I've done!
