Title: Using Math to rescale
Post by: Schweizer on 03 March 2009, 02:52:45 PM
Math has never been a strong suit - at least, determining the equations I need in order to solve a particular problem isn't.

I'm wondering if there's a rubric anywhere for standard scale conversion.  I ask because I found a nice paper model of a "land ironclad" sized at 1:110, and want to build it at 1:72, so I need to know at what percentage I should print.  While I expect a number of you clever fellas could give me the answer (which I'm not saying you shouldn't), I'm wondering if there's some sort of algebraic formula that can be used for any such conversions.  (starting size x desired scale / original scale, etc, etc).

Anyone have any ideas?  It seems like this'd be a helpful tool to have.

You simply divide 110 by 72, giving you 1,53 or 153%. The otherway round: 72 by 110, giving you 0,65 or 65%.

Basically, it´s smaller scale divided by larger scale for enlarging, and large scale divided by smaller scale for reducing.

I´ve attached a quick excel worksheet which allows for fast and easy conversion.

Cheers!

Thanks so much!  I feel like an idiot, but at least I know for the future.

You're not alone. That sheet should come in handy for me as well, hopefully.
