Title: Dino Wrangling
Post by: Pappa Midnight on February 11, 2007, 02:58:32 PM
Hi,
Not sure if I should have posted this here or under VSF, but here goes:

Has anyone thought of doing a cross-over with the Old West to Victorian style Dino Hunting?
I kind of like the idea of herding herbivores like cattle and protecting them from predators in the form of raptors etc. I also think it would be amusing pitting the local town posse against a rampaging Allosaurus.
I remember something similar in the old 2000ad comics, but was wondering if anyone thought of gaming anything similar?

Regards

Being an avid "Gwangi" fan for YEARS, I´ve actually written up some rules for use with "Legends of the Old West".

I also painted up a T-Rex which, due to clever basing (okay, all my 19th century stuff is based the same, pretty much! :D), I can use him with my Amazons AND my Cowboys:

I´m more of the "lost Valley" ilk, rather than going "Dinosaur Ranching".

I made up some rules for 20ies Pulp Dino Hunting which could be used for old west, too. The Prof asked me to translate them to english, but I haven't finished the translation so far.

i used to read an old comic and still have (somewhere) a copy of the RPG Cadillacs & Dinosaurs - your posts just brought that to memory - as well as an idea i had for a modern/near-future ala Shadowrun scenario spinning the Movie City Slickers in a horribly Jurassic sort of way.

i wonder if i should paint the figures first or scratch out some "rules"? call it Misdirected Jurassic Park Rides Found in WestWorld?

i better stop now, the fumes are getting to me...
should have opened a window before shellacing my wifes craft table...
OH! Look!  a rainbow!  soooo pretty when it sings...
thud!

Ah zbyshko, I remember Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, looked like a lot of fun.
I am sure there was a 200AD story involing Dino ranching, but I can't remember what it was called. It was set on another planet with a heavy Wild West feel but with T-rexes etc.
Chris, I love the Gwangi miniature, VERY COOL!
Poliorketes, sounds interesting, I'm sure it wouldn't be much to alter a pulp setting to the Old West.
Grimm, I managed to talk Fritzy into buying some Wild West minis even though he's more interested in Victorian Sci-fi. I told him that the Old West was "Victorian" ( good move!) and because he's got the Saurian Safari rules and a growing collection of Dino Minis I thought it would be a laugh!
I might try a Saurian Safari game in a "DeadWood" type town to see how it goes:
"Sheriff those pesky raptors are back at the Lazy Q Ranch again!"
"O.k. boys saddle up! We got some lizards to bag!"

Nope, Invicta Plastics "Natural History Museum Collection"... hard plastic, but sadly with a surface similar to 1:72 plastics (ie, impossible to paint ) However, I used an outdoor primer spray, and that worked out swell - no chipping afterwards.

It was called "Flesh", to solve the shortage of meat in the future, cowboys go back to Earth's ancient past to harvest dinos, and turn out to be the reason why the dinos died out.

HA, PM I still want to see you do the rules for some poor cowboy putting a saddle and bridle on a T. Rex then break it so it's ridable. Whose going to argue with a sherrif on a T. Rex? Mounted sherrif mini next order,     now where's that T. Rex hiding to............

This hilarious online comic has Bandidos riding raptors pretty awesome! Speaking of which are there any good Doctor models with a lab coat and shirt and tie, any size?

Really funny stuff!
As for the Doctor , I'm sure there is a suitable pulp or weird war two model suitable.
