Title: Breaz' Brushes his Solace campaign UPDATED 04 may
Post by: Breazer on 04 April 2017, 01:57:45 PM
Hey there everyone,

Some time ago i managed to convince a good friend to start a fun medieval project with me. This took me quite a while but when I showed him the perry models of the late 15th century style he finally broke and agreed to build an army. I was happy to start a new project with so many plastics to mix and mash to my hearts desire.

I named this my Solace Campaign because I am at a bit of a stand still in my life right now. There are probably a few people that would get upset by me calling it this. The thing is that I am fighting the black fog of depression. What has managed to keep this at bay for a while now is making progress with my miniature projects. up until now this seems to be a thing that lowers that pressure for me and I felt it would be a good name for a project that has no significant background besides a style choice.  I really hope to build something amazing here and hopefully as I am working on this I can compare the progress of the army to me getting better.

We will use Lion Rampant as a ruleset for the games and I wanted to build my models so they could be Germans. They will just look like them because I wish to hold on to creative freedom and I simply dont know too much about them to be really accurate. So forgive any weirdness as I know some of you are quite well learned and prefer accurate portrays.

I finished my leader and 2 of his fellow men at arms. My leader still needs a good name, so if anoyne has a good suggestion I'm willing to consider it ;)

Looking forward to seeing more.

Have to love Perry plastics.
Your figures look great.

Thank you all so much for the kind words.

@charlie: jups... I put that aside for a bit now since I really want to have a project that has a solid basis done. But no worries, I'll get back to that eventually as well.

Nicely done and great painting Breazer! Big fan of anything 15th century Continental, especially German. The Isles are overrated anyway  :D

I have a small German bandit-baron force for use in various skirmish games, same idea as yours, using the most 'Germanic' looking bits from the Perry sets. And to top it off, I started to expand my force into something for Lion Rampant, so I'm glad I'm not the only one!

That sounds great shrubs, I'd love to see your force once, I might find some inspiration in your stuff too.

Sure thing- started a new thread here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=99584.0) so I wouldn't clutter your thread. My project has been on the wayside lately, perhaps this will be enough of a kick to get going again :)

Very nice work and good to see after decades of Charles the Bold, Longbows and Swiss Pikes dominating the period.  :)

My attitude is that if you're going to do 'history', then do it properly and accurately. If on the other hand you make no pretense of that and are quite happy with making it up as you go, then that is okay too and often far more interesting; it is your hobby, not anyone else's.

Too many troubles in the hobby have been caused by those who just do the last, but claim to do the first.  ;)

Good luck with this!

@Arlequin I'd like to do a more acurate force one day and ill be sure to ask for some tips from you or where to look. I'd be curious to hear what you'd recommend for some smaller warbands

@hallmarkFPS: Thank you very much. I hope so too.

I know next to nothing about 15th Century German armies, I was hoping to be educated here. I can compare with English and Flemish forces to a point if needed though. We have some informed and clever people on LAF, maybe even a German expert, who knows?

Edit- The Osprey 'German Armies 1300-1500' is easy to access and seems to be quite useful. How correct it is I could not say. An image search for "Mittelalterliche Hausbuch" will provide plenty of inspiration I'm sure.

Nice....you want an real name (Charakter)? Or a fantasy name like Ulrich von Hornberg, something like that ? The problem could be the banner....you give them the imperial banner...so it must be one of the force from the emporer.

@Arlequin:  Thank you. The book is on my wishlist indeed.

@bluechi: I am going with a fantasy name. The imperial banner isnt a problem. I will even add another banner to the unit just because it will look cool.

For Inspiration take Wikipedia. ..Reichsritterschafft. ...there you can find the different kantons and a lot of historical names where you can make an fantasy name ;)

It has been quiet here for a while. I wasn't idle though, I just didn't have the time to take decent pictures yet. So now that I did I will roll out a bunch of updates faster.

One of the things I struggle with a lot when it comes to miniatures is that I have the tendency to over compensate and I often don't get to start things or I redo them. Even though I really enjoy creating entirely new things I can get stuck on simple things such as shield designs or a flag. I am slowly learning how to deal with this but here and there I get to go back and redo a few things.

This time my leader had to suffer and I made a different model for him that looks very similar. He is still nameless but I figured I'll get back to it once I finished all my models for this project.
I did not get round to finishing his base yet but I'm sure that will happen soon.

I also turned one of his mounted brothers blue's into reds.

This guy hasn't changed but I took some better pictures of him.

And finally the banner carrier that goes with my leader. I stole the imagery of Stephen of Blois because I'm really interested in the Anarchy, Except I'm using one centaur instead of three. I also changed the field from one red field to a split red and white field but it's a small homage I guess.

This is them so far. I'm still missing one guy but he will soon be done.

I have been playing the yellow piece in most of the boardgames that I play for a long time now. Ironically I have never owned an army of any kind that was yellow. I thought this would be a good moment to add some yellow stuff to this too because of the imperial banner and all. For my first unit of foot serjeants I thought it would be fun to have this unit from a town that lies on the lands of my leader (him being a noble and all). I don't really know how that would work if say there were multiple towns and say this one wasnt governed by a lord but more something that you would call an Exarch. A sheriff of some sort. I'll just roll with it and create the unit for that later. These are some drummed up poor souls that get to fight in that army.

Names follow later as that works better for me. I really like the guy with the trumpet.

I really like your painting style, it looks somewhat more realistic in 'tone' to me. Well done!

I've been quite inspired by this thread and others to delve into the HRR and it's quite fascinating; as well as providing an excellent setting for small wars.

:)

*Edit* - I don't know how correct this is, but I read that the yellow field backing the Imperial Eagle symbolised a unit raised for the Emperor's service and otherwise a white field backing the eagle was used.

Great work, Breazer. You're one of an elite cadre of LAFfers who have steadily demolished my staunchly mail-clad tastes, and opened my heart to the later Middle Ages. Claymore and Perry should have you lot on commission!  lol

I really like the yellow; it's not always an easy colour to paint well (or convincingly), but this is a treat for my eyes.

Btw, I like the elliptical bases for the cavalry. Where can I find bases like that?

@arlequin, thank you very much. also for the info. I feel like I should take better pictures though.

@Garanhir, those are some very kind words my friend. I am actually quite the mailclad fan myself and i'll probably post some footsores I painted recently here soon too. Yellow is indeed difficult to make look halfway decent and I try.
The bases are from games workshop, they come in two sizes and these are the smallest version.

Nice work! I really like the pose of the trumpeter. I also really like the halberdier on the far right using the body from the foot knight command sprue - I think I'm gonna try that build myself. That's a really useful body, it's really annoying that you only get one per box! You can get the command sprue separately, which I have done, but that also means I have all these unwanted multiples of the other body (and the Richard III heads) knocking about....

You're one of an elite cadre of LAFfers who have steadily demolished my staunchly mail-clad tastes, and opened my heart to the later Middle Ages.

Trade in your worn-out mail for a suit of fine Milanese plate!

It's funny how different eras of the middle ages appeal to us differently. I have almost ZERO interest in anything from the dark ages up to about 1300 (at least as far as wargaming goes), but I LOVE anything from the 15th century.

... but that also means I have all these unwanted multiples of the other body (and the Richard III heads) knocking about.

I think that is the trade-off with the versatility. Maybe 'waste-not, want not' makes sense ordinarily, but having a pool of 'spares' is the price of creating 'that figure'.

Somebody once said to me that wargaming is just an expensive hobby and that was that; if it was an issue, maybe I should take up something cheaper, like golf.

;)

Seriously though, those 'Richard' heads may come in useful down the line, even if moustaches or beards have to be added; it's not like you'll be short of them to practice on.

:)

And a good thing to remember too is that you get a set of extra banner arms. One can never have enough cool banners flapping in the wind!
