Title: mars 189.......
Post by: DeltaBlue on 10 April 2017, 10:18:15 AM
Greetings ladies and gentlemen,

This is my first post on LAF so please be very gentle…..

As the title suggest I’ve have got the Martian bug, (not the nasty one that burrows inside your skull through your nose, eating your brain and controlling your body to do silly things like become a vegetarian, not wearing a hat outdoors, or listening to the gramophone loudly)

Anyway,

I have ideas for most of the human “earth” forces fractions, using 28mm colonial or ww1 for the more “VSF Style” units

However, I need ideas for Belgian “Martian free state”

I know people use foundry “Force Publique” miniatures, but I am not too taken with the idea, miniature wise I like the officers and NOC’s

I was thinking abut using gripping beast/woodbine designs Turks with their “French in tropical helmets” heads for "earth" raised units

What are you going to use for Martians?

Well to be difficult I have to answer depends on what Martians you want to know about.

For most Martian city states earth-style armies and local raised “native forces” I plan to use their redoubt’s wellington in India range Sepoy and iron duke’s India mutineers

For most Martian city states more traditional armies I plan to use a mix of miniatures depending on what the “theme” of the city state, so for one I may use Aztecs, the other ancient Greek, and others Perry Rotw plastics

For tribal Martians, depending where they come for jungle/forest I plan to use woodland’s Native Americans, for desert based, ironclad Martians

For others I plan to use lord of the rings orcs and Uruk-hai

Interesting choice of figures. :)

I was curious as we have our own version of the Martians which we use in our games seen below. Its always nice to see someone elses take on the subject.

There are lots of other threads and battle reports in the VSF board from jimbibbly and Dr De'Ath detailing our adventures on mars. We are just about toe embark on a campagin spanning the enxt year which will culminate in a display game at Salute 2018 all things being equal :) ;)

Is that 'mars 189...' supposed to be 1889, or eighteen-ninety-something?

Your Martians are humanoid? As mentioned elsewhere, in Space 1889, the indigenous are modified Grenadier elves, as Bob Murch appears to have done the sculpting for both.  ;)

Other fantasy races would be possible, though orcs as not-quite-human 'noble savages' is a bit more of a stretch.  lol

To malamute:

Thank you, and if I am truthful I have been along term lurker/follower of yours and others threads. As for for my choice of models, yes they are interesting,

But they fit with the three main objectives of the project, 1) to recycle miniatures I have already got, 2) interest my younger brothers and 3) to give favour to each faction.

To the_beast:

Yes it was mean to be 1890 something, I am somewhat of a heretic as I include up to the end of 1918 in my VSF universe.

Yes indeed the majority of the Martians are humanoid (though be careful where you make that state old boy) though there are other "races" on mars living in the underground craves systems and dead cities.

And yes space 1889, bob Murch represent them well.

However, my take on mars is a bit different.

Firstly my "mars" climate is more akin to India, in that you have jungles and forests, mostly around the equator, plains and grasslands, hedging the rivers and the few lakes. The gaunt sand-seas of deserts, rock and ice and snow of the polar regions.

I wanted the Martians of this mars to be differentiated not but race as ERB does, but culture and technology levels. My use of Aztecs and Greeks are my digs at the ancient alien theories and Atlantis myth.

I considered a similar idea of a vsf/backwater 40k planet setting and I thought of using 90s high elves as they can be obtained easily and did see the eureka ? Sci fi Egyptians that looked good with snake heads and power lance type weapons .

By the way, you are indeed most welcome! Hope we're 'gentle' enough.  ;)

I guess it seems like pitching right is the most sincere 'howdy'.

I am also a great fan of Pijlie. Though, I'm less inspired and more shamed by not being inspired to get off my butt.  lol
