Title: update 08-09: more Gear Krieg preview pictures...
Post by: Agis on March 07, 2009, 09:31:35 PM
Hi again,
The British and Commonwealth Vehicle Compendium was published last week and is again going strong at the Wargames Vault.
Thanks to everyone who bought a copy!
But I also continued to work on other projects. I worked on some US vehicles (more next week) and some Gear Krieg models.

Excellent work as always.

Sorry, my WWII knowledge isn't what it should be, but why are British "desert rat" walkers bearing the dutch flag? You know, given that they fought each other.

DP9s pricing policy is absolutely there own.
So no comment from me!  :)

However: Having bought 15mm miniatures (both infantry and AFVs) from almost every mini company around I can assure you that the DP9 models are some of the best, the casting quality was always very high and the sculpts are great. Most walkers (Cavalier, Early, Loki and Walküre) have a detailed cockpit interior and all kits are multipart kits which enables you to build between 2 and 3 variants!

Ahh, there aren't that much Agis around. (In fact I have never met another Agis...)
Gear Krieg really is a nice setting. For me it is serious enough to not get ridiculous, but still takes away a bit of the bitterness of all WW II games!

A German Raketentruppe is preparing the next assault together with a Thor walker.

A fully equipped Raketentruppe squad was a dangerous enemy to every allied troop. Dressed in leather flight suits and riding into battle on the Vossler rocket pack, they were anything but subtle.
Used only for the most important of operations, they wore heavy armour and carried the latest in automatic weapons and demolition charges. Due to their specialized mode of transport these units always deployed in small numbers.

Minis from DP9.

Why is something bad by default? Only because the scale is not fitting into your collection?

Smaller scales have their benefits!

Walküre Ausf A and Loki Ausf B walker in ground mode (DP9s Gear Krieg range)

PzKpf IV Ausführung B “Loki”
The Ausführung B featured Manipulator arms and was armed with the new 1.8cm walker cannon.
The overall construction was also improved and resulted in a more rugged walker.

PzKpf V Ausführung A “Walküre”
The Panzerkämpfer V Ausführung A was the first to come out of the production line. Like the “Loki” before it,
was only poorly armed, with a pintle mounted MG and some demolition charges.

c'mon, this scale has a LOT of potential... It permits to have a HUGE army whith a lot of detail but in a easy way! that's the best, for some things... for example, I think that mechs in 15mm are The best! :)

If Gear Krieg was in 28mm, I'd be on it like a hobo on a hot dog.  As it is, in 15mm, I'd be starting over, effectively, in a new scale.  I cant afford new british, new american, new russian and new german figures and tanks.  :(

All true, but keep in mind that 15mm is not that expensive.
And maybe it is a good idea just to buy ONE faction at a time...

Exactly! There are so many walkers in 28mm around these days, it is really simple IMO.
My 28mm Walküre was a SdKfz 251 kit plus the legs of a GW Sentinel!

Just dont ask Agis which scale the SdkFz 251 is from. Seems he is getting old and cant recall all the little details. LOL and before ya respond Agis you may recall i asked ya before which scale it was. You couldn't recall if it was 1/48 or 1/72.  LOL U just have way too many kool ideas floating about in your noggin. Need to get em all out and down on paper and let the demons out to play. Still some snazzy stuff i have always said.  :-)

Really Nice stuff... I'm sorely tempted by weird WWII 15mm now  ;). Do the Battlefield Evolution: World at War rules "work" at 15mm Currently? Or will your Gear Krieg add and change some things? (Aside from walkers, etc).

Well...

Battlefield Evolution: World at War was written with 28 or 20 mm miniatures in mind.
As long as your minis are individually based you can use the Battlefield Evolution: World at War rules straight away.
We found that the weapon ranges look in fact more realistic when using individually based 15mm infantry miniatures. If you want to play with smaller tables just use centimetres instead of inches and all will be fine.
Using individually based infantry miniatures is the recommended way of playing Battlefield Evolution: World at War.

If your existing 15mm or even 6mm WW II infantry collection is consisting of group- or multibased miniatures (aka Infantry Stands), a little bit more effort is necessary.
The WaW: Gear Krieg book will give you a detailed "conversion" guide, additional rules and lots of examples of how to use Infantry Stands in Evolution.
(To be honest - these rules worked so well during playtest that I like them now even better...)

Another preview picture of the Gear Krieg book: the mighty T-44 Nicolai Lenin land battleship.
T-44 Nikolai Lenin - In Service: 1940 - The T-44 was a land battleship in its truest sense.
The lessons learned from the T-28, T-35 or T-100 tanks were incorporated in the design of the Nikolai Lenin.
Its wide tracks make it less vulnerable to staying stuck in soft ground.
A powerful diesel engine drove each set of tracks through rugged transmission adapted industrial machinery.

Some more preview pics.

T-44-10 Nikolai Lenin - In Service: 1940 - The 47mm cannon of the Lenin was always viewed as a weakness, and the large turret always yearned for a larger weapon. The mammoth 122mm gun was a marvel of engineering, able to pulverize even German heavy tanks. Ammunition was always in short supply, however, and the tank still suffered from poor mobility.

Cavalier Mk II (Infantry Walker Mk VIII B) - In Service: 1940 – The biggest improvement of the Cavalier Mk II was the reinforced frontal armour and the turret mounted MG. Model by DP9

Cavalier Mk III Crocodile: The rare 1942 Crocodile Flamethrower variant was mostly used in the Pacific theatre.

Roundhead Mk II (Infantry Walker Mk XII B) – In Service:1941 - The Roundhead Mk II was virtually identical to the Mk I, the only change was the main armament. Instead of the 1.2 pdr. Gun an American made Flamethrower was mounted in the round turret.  Model by DP9

With the yesterday release of the Chinese book Dave and I can now start the layout work of the Gear Krieg book. More soon hopefully!

Layout is in full swing now. Time to show some more preview pics...

15mm DP9 Ostfront German Zombietrupp

Cavalier Mk III (Infantry Walker Mk VIII C ) - In Service: 1941 – The C variant of the Cavalier was a much needed improvement over the previous models. Refinements by Vickers from the Christie walker suspension followed a natural progression as industrial production was smoothed out and technical refinements came to fruition. It enabled the Cavalier Mk III to be air deployed.
A light cannon based on a necked-down AA shell was mounted in the turret of the B variant. For close range attacks the C was armed with the better M40 explosive charges that were also seen on the Roundhead walker. A better radio set with more extensive range was also added. Model by DP9

Dave and I are on it! Gear Krieg is soon ready, I have just uploaded 120 MB of pictures to Dave, the layout is in full swing.

Check out the Cover preview and a sample page to get a feel of the book.

The pages are following the same layout pattern that was also used in the Chinese Army Compendium, you get the unit entry and also all the possible weapon stats for the unit, so no more flipping around in the book just to check which weapon is to your liking.

The good old Armoury lists will be featured in addition to the above; so no loss at all. You can also expect the usual high quality unit cards that most of us are so fond of! So stay tuned...

Good to know!  :)
Gear Krieg was the first of the weird war settings and in my opinion is still the best setting.
The Gear Krieg walker designs look believable and carry a lot of the visual appeal of the ar-moured fighting vehicles of the WW II era. Just look at the Walküre and compare this walker design with a SdKfz 251, or the Uller compared to a Tiger tank. You can see that a lot of thought was put into these designs. These are not some Manga Mechs with German crosses over the hull, these are well researched and designed vehicles that really fit into WW II.

Couldn't agree more, which I why I continue to sob and cry like a baby re: scale. I just can't afford to start 20mm gaming when I have so much WWW 28mm.
Damn you Gear Krieg!!  lol

The good thing is that switching to 15mm is cheaper then switching from 15mm to 20 or 28mm!
 ;)

that's wise... you can buy a 15mm army just with the money you found left in your pocket every day!

And that is why I'm being dragged ever closer to taking the plunge.

More or less the last preview picture before the book release:
US Aerial Infantry Squad – Aerial Infantry Squads were made possible by the engineering genius of Sikorsky. The backpack-style M2 PPS made it possible for individual soldiers to nimbly move about. Only the best and the bravest strapped on these spinning blades and took the fight to the enemy. (15mm Infantry of DP9s Gear Krieg range, bases by King & Kerr)

Is it wise for them to walk so closely together though?  lol

They are trained to do exactly that! High precision landing and liftoff in dense areas under enemy fire is part of the 1st day of Aerial infantry training!
 ;) ;)

Thanks! I am already proud of this book, the layout looks even better as our other books and Gear Krieg minis are just too good!

They're awesome, but I could see problems arising if the unit decided to take wing in such tight order.

See above! They are trained to do that, all rotor blades are spinning in totall unity and harmony...
 ;) ;) ;)
Real life reason, you have to place them somehow on 1 base if you want a multibased unit! 8)

Time for more or less the last preview: A unit card for the PzKpf VI Thor Ausführung F.

I hope you like it, IMO Dave created a very good looking card that captures a bit of the old GK books and our Compendiums.

OK, this time it is the last preview picture.
If all goes right the book will be released next weekend via the Wargames Vault!
A nice joint venture of Kevin Benneh and me.
I needed a mid war German Grenadier platoon fast and Kevin was nice enough to paint the 35 15mm expertly within 2 weeks!
Infantry by FoW, 250/10 by Quality Casting and the two walker -of course- by DP9.
