This project is gonna be a slow burn, since I have a million other things on the go, but anyway...
A friend recently introduced me to Lion/Dragon Rampant, and they're pretty awesome. Since I've long wanted to go a Westeros themed force, partially inspired by the many excellent blogs right here, I figured this would be the perfect chance to use a few boxes of Perry minis I had lying around!
So here is the first unit, some Baratheon spear sergeants, ready to join in Robert's rebellion and topple the Mad King. I'm setting the force during the Rebellion since that lets me field a more interesting selection of houses and troops, as opposed to the War of the Five Kings which was mostly decided off the battlefield and featured less diverse forces.
I've used the uniforms worn in the TV show as a guide, and kept the colours fairly muted. The main thing I will be using to differentiate each house will be helmet types, since those seem the major way the show differentiates them, each house seems to have a predominant style of helmet.
These guys are pretty rough and ready, just tabletop standard, about 30-40mins per dude. I'm still working on the Ser to lead the squad, he'll hopefully be done soon.

Next up will be some Baratheon crossbows, then maybe some Vale troops.

Nicely done 8)
They look great.
-
They do look really nice. Love the look of a nicely based unit on regimental base like that. Also great fun to see some Baratheons and some other characters!
-
Added to the LAF GoT compendium thread :)
-
Nice Baratheons!
-
Very nice! I'm looking forward to what's next!

Me too,I like the basing as well :)

Added to the LAF GoT compendium thread :)
Thanks!

A wonderful new addition to our league of GoT / ASoIaF projects!
Well done and welcome to the gang!! Looking forward to seeing more as you can get to it.
(I know the feeling. My distractions are all outside of the hobby realm right now.)

Thanks for the kind words guys, much appreciated :)
Painted up the next Baratheon unit over the weekend. Nothing fancy, more quick and dirty paintjobs, but they'll do the job on the table at least. I'm trying to avoid spending too long on these guys, most of my projects end up languishing too long because I devote hours to a single model. Batch painting to tabletop standard is the aim for these, even though the minis are really nice and I'm not doing them proper justice. I will spend a bit longer when I paint up some knights and such.
These crossbowmen are in service to House Buckler of Bronzegate, hence they fly the house colours, along with a Baratheon sigil, simple stag horns rather than the full heraldic stag.

Great stuff :)
I like the use and style of the sub-house.
cheers

Nicely done mate. :D

Another very nice unit 8)

They are looking really nice! I hope we see more, sonn ;)
What colors are you using for the yellow coat-of-arms? I find it really hard to find a good yellow ...
-
Outstanding stuff!

Thanks guys! :) You keep me motivated to paint!

The yellow is my 'lazy yellow mix' haha. Basecoat P3 Rucksack Tan, wash with GW Agrax Earthshade, highlight with progressive mixes of Rucksack Tan, Reaper Golden Yellow and VGC Bonewhite.
I paint a fair bit of yellow, and Rucksack Tan is almost always my go to base colour, it's a nice muted yellow.

Ooohh they're great! I like how you have given them all kinda the same helmet; I've always imagined the Westerosi troops kinda uniform!
I'm looking forward to see some more from you :)

Same as what i was thinking! I tried to do that as well with my Mormonts, but yours look more in uniform! Great job!
-
Thanks guys :) Looking at the shots of troops from the show, the most obvious difference between houses, other than heraldry, is the helmets. So I've tried to represent that with my troops. I'm working on assembling some Vale troops now and they all use a different helmet again.
-
Very nice figures indeed . Welcome to the GoT madness ;)

Been a week or so, but here's the next unit finished. Some Baratheon knights, to put some backbone into all those scummy peasants. They're a bit colourful for the TV vision of Westeros, so I perhaps went overboard with the heraldry, but the models were wearing houpelands so it seemed appropriate. The houses represented are: House Hasty (perhaps Ser Bonifer himself), House Buckler (who's also contributing the earlier crossbows), House Wylde, House Musgood, House Gower and House Wagstaff.
These were a lot of fun to paint, I spent much longer on each mini compared to the regular troops, probably about 1-1.5 hours per, as opposed to half that on the previous guys, and it shows hopefully. The heraldry was a real pain, but I challenged myself to keep working on my freehand skills.
Anyway, hopefully you guys like them.

Wow, they are super cool! Amazing job on the different surcoats.

I think your "colourful" take is spot on. HBO's version always seemed a little drab to me. I'm really impressed with the heraldry. Great work!

I feel like the Europeans on LAF need to create a small gaming convention for GoT/ASOIAF...meet up some weekend and run massive games (according to whatever rule set people choose). It'd be stellar to see all these projects in one place.

That would be pretty cool :D

Lovely! :-*
Well done. The blue knight is my favourite :)

These are fantastic. The House Gower knight is absolutely brilliant. I love the work you've done here. Please for the love of God keep this up. It inspires me.

That would be amazing, however since I'm from Down Under, I probably wouldn't make it.

Well you can join the US guys and just weep in sorrow! lol

Can confirm, would weep in sorrow. :P
Great painting Magos! Those knights are going to be a serious source of inspiration. :-*
-
Cracking stuff love the knights, and you've given me ideas for my own westerosi troops. Please keep us updated!
-
Thanks Wellington! Seeing the notification for this thread pop up in my inbox inspired me to come back to it after a few months. I'll hopefully have something new to show for it soon :)
-
Ok, so, 'soon' may have actually meant 'in about four months'. But at long last, here's the next unit for my slowly expanding Westeros collection.
It's finally time for someone to put a stop to Robert and his treachery, and who better to do it than the young Jon Connington, impetuous new Hand of the King? Here's a unit of Connington bowmen, proudly standing against their liege lord Robert in favour of their king. Somehow I don't think it's going to turn out too well for them...
Anyway, I knocked these guys out on a whim after they sat undercoated on my desk for a few months. Pretty rough and ready, really the minimum level of painting I'd ever own up to, but they'll do for tabletop quality troops, and it felt good to finish another unit.

Your Westerosi are coming together really nicely. I love the heraldry. :-*
-
Great figures, I'm looking at this for 15mm battles but am struggling to find a list of houses, alliances and heraldry on line.
Any help would be appreciate as my Google-foo is failing.
Thanks
-
Minimum level, they look great, better by many levels than anything I've ever painted!
-
@Bunny, you should check out the Wiki of Ice and Fire, they have lists of all the houses and heraldry where known. Case in point, I'm currently going through this page for Riverland heraldry: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Riverlands
Foreshadowing a little I guess lol.
-
nice additions
-
Well, as I hinted, here are some Riverlanders. Men at Arms from House Tully, accompanied by a couple of allied knights.
I wanted to try and match the look of the Tullys from the show, where they wear a strange sort of leather scale armour. Not the most historically accurate for the pseudo historical period of the setting, but hey, fish, right?
Anyway, I'd like to think I've managed an acceptable blend of historical and the show. The two Knights are Ser Desmond Grell and Lord Jason Mallister.

Magnificent!! You're completly right about the blending!

They look great :-*
-
Those are some brilliant models.
Pray tell, where did you get them from, or what kits did you make them from? I know you've been using the Perry Miniatures' Agincourt plastics, but still, the knights in the front row of that Tully unit look brilliant. :o
-
Thanks guys :) The Tully men at arms are made from a mix of Fireforge Scandinavians and Perry knights mostly.
-
I very much like your style. Well done.

These are really, REALLY coming along nicely!!! Can't wait to see more!
I don't mean to hijack this thread but Bunny,
Depending on how you want to go... There's a fraternity amongst the ASOIAF'ers that like to take inspiration directly or almost exclusively from the books, the good Captain and I amongst them, and those who really like the look of the series, and those who just like the setting and mix n match.
However, be warned the Wiki does not always display the heraldry correctly (bends the wrong way round, chevrons upside down etc.) I find these obvious details jar, but that's just me.
Plus the Wiki versions are drawn from a host of semi-canon sources which make embellishments and attributions not found in the original books, but hey its fantasy so pretty much anything goes.
Personally I think the best thing about this 'period' is I don't feel intimidated if I get the details wrong, because there is no 'wrong' way to visualise it. You'll have more freedom to stage epic battles in 15mm than us 25mm'ers! In 25mm sticking to 12 figures per house doesn't sound much, but I'm currently working up to completing a 12 House Westerlands army, which is looking like A LOT, and that's not counting the cavalry!...

Great stuff here ... :-*
