I've finally found time to get some photos downloaded and thought I'd post a few on here. Phone was used so I apologise about the quality of one of them, and the lighting in my shed isn't marvellous, but you get the overall idea. There's approx 500 ansar on the table with 24 camels and 36 Baggara cavalry, 2 Krupps and a Gatling trying to stop a British relief column from reaching the Egyptian garrison, along with some Bashi Bazouks and the West Kents. Unfortunately the British were beaten off and the garrison succumbed anyway. Currently it's 2-0 to the Mahdi on this table. :D

If I put the rest of the Egyptians, Sudanese and British Imperial forces on the table there'd be around 1000 figures crammed on, and I'd need a bigger shed! Table is 12ft x 5ft. The mat is by Tinywargames in case anyone is interested, and we use Black Powder. The markers in the bottom right hand corner are used to denote disordered (the wounded figures) and shaken, in the Mahdists case shown by a spear and shield, and for the Imperial forces a backpack, ammo box and pith helmet.

Great looking game! :-* :-*

Fantastic tabletop and armies - doesn't help my resistance to dabble with Sudan!
Simon.

A very impressive setup indeed.
Large units are definitely the way to go for this period.
-
Most impressive. That's quite a collection and some really lovely terrain.
-
Do the danged relief columns ever fight their way through in time? Very impressive display.

Wow :o :-*

Fantastic! :-*

Jeepers!

Small? What an earth would a big one look like? :)
Cracking stuff!

Thanks everyone. I'm a gamer in the Deedles mould, big is beautiful!! :D ;D
-
wow looks brilliant...how big's your shed ?
-
Wow, that is some collection. ;D :-*
-
Most impressive - seeing hundreds of tribals in 28mm is wonderful...and the table isn't that shabby either ;)
-
Amazing table and a most impressive amount of models.
Where did you get those lovely Egyptians?
-
Excellent job! A great looking game.
-
Not such a small tussle by the look of it, and very impressive indeed. And 2-0 to the Mahdi? I'm sure the Dirty Half-Hundred will get them next time!
-
Splendid :)
cheers

Everything is from Perrys, apart from a Fred Burnaby figure by Warlord who arrived with the Blood on the Nile rulebook.wow looks brilliant...how big's your shed ?
Not big enough! :D The table is 5ft x 12ft, it would have benefited from being another foot wider, but then we would all have to be built like stick insects to squeeze down the sides lol There just enough room to fit some display cabinets at either end and down one side. Hopefully one day I will be able to erect V2 which I'm planning on being around 20ft x 12ft. I did consider a portacabin instead for a while but decided it wasn't wide enough.
There's around 2000 28mm SYW in the cabinets. I'm trying to work out how I can squeeze them on the table and still have room left for some terrain at the moment. o_o

Brilliant! :-*

..Small!!!!..I would hate to see what you call a large Tussel..outstanding job..

Wonderful photos.
Love the Sudan.
You have done an excellent job.

Oh that is a wonderful sight.

Thank you sir, I am an admirer of your handiwork! I haven't the skill to take such good photos as you stage I think. It was seeing your pics on here that made me take these photos and finally get round to putting them up.
Yes it's the Tiny desert one with added shoreline. Cost about £175 IIRC.
now we just need to meet up and have an even bigger game...mwwwaahaha!
I think my units duplicate yours virtually, except I don't have quite so many ansar. :D It would certainly require a VERY large table that's for sure. lol It would be good to have a big bash, one day perhaps.........
-
now we just need to meet up
I didn't realise that you were running the beautiful Sudan game at Hammerhead, otherwise I'd have stopped and made myself known. I'll be at Partizan, and I see from your blog that you are performing there again, so this time I will definitely drop in and say 'ow do.

lets do it... I feel a cunning plan coming on..

Small.....SMALL...!!!! :o :o That is one heck of a tussle. Great table groaning with figures. Absolute eye candy. :-* :-* :-* :-*
And I don't even do the Sudan. :?

We have to feed the Mahdists on gradually as they won't all fit on at once without it becoming a huge logjam! It helps if a few are obligingly wiped out by the British to make room for the rest. :D The bases are vallejo Red Leather base with Iraqi Sand and ivory or offwhite to highlight. Unfortunately, the mat is more Dark Sand in tone, if I'd bought the mat before I started painting everything I'd have used Dark Sand instead. The OCD in me finds it mildly irritating. :-[

The British forces set out from the safety off their zariba. In the middle photo the cavalry advances on the left flank, Bengal Lancers with the two white horses in front of the Hussars. Unfortunately this was the high water mark of the British advance. The Black Watch nearly reached the native village on the right flank but without support they were eventually over-run. The Mahdist commanders have learnt to throw in the Hadendowah first because they get re-rolls, and give them plenty of support, then keep replacing units as they get knocked back almost on a rolling conveyor belt fashion. The British generals keep forgetting to support their units, or issue "follow me!"' orders and take single units off on flights of folly. They've yet to adopt the brigade square and march slowly up the table. Perhaps next time....... ;)

the entertainment continues ..
love it

jaw dropping stuff!! :-* :-*
I can but only dream of producing armies on that scale. You must be a very fast painter that's all I can say!
Need to get me one of those mats too.
-

Thank you cram. I have to squeeze it in between working a 12 hour day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. It takes some doing.
IIRC I started painting these about 2013 and finally finished them in the Summer of 2016. There's mounted Camel Corps and Hussars with improv lances sitting in a box somewhere which I might blow the dust off and paint one day, but to all intents and purposes this lot is done as far as I'm concerned. I did think about doing the Bengal/Bombay infantry as that the only infantry unit I've not tackled, I might do them if I tidy up those unpainted cavalry/camels. My gaming companions however keep moving on to other projects and I have to tackle their whims (WotR 28mm at present) whilst trying to get my own projects finished (long list, see Big Battalions post for starters :-[ )

Very impressed that you can be so productive with so little time!!
I work an 8.15am to 4.45pm shift Monday to Friday. Some of my free time is taken up with my girlfriend and weight training, but that still leaves me a lot of time left for painting, but I don't paint anywhere near as many figures as you! My problem I think is I get distracted too easily when painting and wander away from the desk to often. I need to train myself to me more focused lol.
Thanks for sharing, it's an inspiration!

Thank you again! I find the biggest distraction is the computer which sits next to my painting desk as I paint in my office, and the internet whilst being an amazing help for research is also a huge distraction, especially certain forums lol lol

Smaller engagement this time, with Egyptian fellahin and Bashi Bazouks reinforced by Egyptian cavalry and Bengal Lancers attempting to storm a Mahdist village along the banks of the Nile.
Despite some promising early progress the Imperial forces were eventually driven back by the timely arrival of several dhows containing Mahdist reinforcements, and after a surprisingly stoic defence by the Egyptian foot and Bashi Bazouks they were once again put to the sword. Mahdists 3 Imperials 0. :D

Fantastic games, miniatures and table! :-*
Loving this thread.

Keep it coming ..lovely pictures

It looks just gorgeous. You have done a great job. Bravo!

Stepping back in time a bit here, into the era before the games mat appeared. This is a game of SAGA we had using the battle boards that featured in WS&S magazine one month. Warbases swiftly rattled me some dice off with the appropriate symbols on them and off we went.

We ran several games and swapped sides, but no matter how hard the British player tried tactically he could never win! Once I did manage to almost reach the village, but that was as far as I got before being chopped to bits. The British could never use their firepower effectively enough to hold the Mahdists off and shoot them down before the Hadendowah or Nile Spears closed to hand to hand and mopped them up. Mahdists 4-0. :D Poor old Bashis copped a packet as usual too. :)

Amazing stuff. Very inspirational.
Where did you get the movement trays from? Looks like the holes are staggered in them, which stops the madhists looking too uniformly ranked up. Might get some myself.

Brilliant job MrV

lol You also add to this distraction, but as you see, everybody is happy!
You are doing a great job, following your thread, eager to see your next postings!

All the movement trays and bases, including the casualty counters, are from Warbases.

That was a very nice looking game of yours at The Other Partizan the other Sunday Deedles. I'm afraid I got side-tracked by the Sudan game in 6mm two tables away and with only having a short time to stay at the show I didn't get the chance to drop for a chat. It's a pity we live so far apart and I'm always working, a combined game with the forces at our disposal would be something to see! .

I'm going to tempt fate here David, ::) but next year all being well my domestic arrangements will finally alter and my OH will be moving in before the summer. Now I just have to get her up to speed with the farmwork, she already does some of it when she's over so it shouldn't be difficult, and possibly persuade one of my staff to come in over a weekend as well and this might be doable. Like you say we then need to find a venue. I have vans here so I can transport mine as well.

Really impressive and inspiring I have decided to carry on painting my Perry Sudan after a 2 year break - please can I ask which limbers you have used for the British
Thanks
-
Thanks for the compliments. The limbers are from Tiger Miniatures.
