Title: Project Barsoom
Post by: Askellad on April 30, 2017, 09:52:54 AM
I'm reading the cycle of Mars and it inspire me to create my (plastic) minis for John Carter and Cie
Here are some red men and some tharks.

Sorry for the photos

For redmen, I used zulu warlord with victrix carthaginian head, and bitz from Perry and frostgrave
For greenmen, I used GW 40k Kroots and i need to make some tusks

I will make some Zodangians later.

Bye,

Great ideas I ,really like your red men.

Ditto.

Of course, most folk use Kroot as Parrotmen of Venus, but I must say, assuming you have a bunch to convert, does seem to work.

I thought the warriors of Zodanga were just different red men from Helium's. Thoughts on how you're making them different? Assyrian, or even, Chinese helmets?

Actually I was thinking of converting orc hunter from the hobbit with iberic head from victrix but I need to wait the reception of my order. I want to see if its possible or if it looks too "savage".

Looking good! Those models work well in their new roles. Kind of reminds me of the way props and sets from historical productions would often be re-purposed to sci-fi (see the original Flash Gordon shorts and of course the 60s Star Trek-so many worlds that just happened to match eras of our own history ;)). Great idea anyway-looking forward to seeing them painted :)

Funny, I would have thought someone in the UK would have invoked the Trigan Empire...  :D

The point is that these actually match some of the illustrations associated with Barsoom.

Building and gaming the Trigan Empire is one of the most sanity threatening projects bouncing around in my skull the last few years.....

For the end, this is my first test for Therns but I find them a little bit too big.

I plan to do a Thark Jeddak and some ships ( one per faction)

Sorry for the shiny photos but it is sunny today and thanks you for reading,

I really like where this is going  :)

And you should clean the lens of your camera. That will really make a difference.

You're right, my phone was dirty.

I have a question :
What rules can I used for Barsoom universe?
I want something like skirmish games but for the ships, the green men and the wildlife, I have no idea.
Someone can help?

If you are talking about a  skirmish level of a few figures a side I would suggest

In her majesty's name, it's a VSF set,  it  simple, quick, has guides for  creation of weapons, armours, talents, creatures, etc and really may only need you to rename some of the weapons, armour, etc. I like because it allows you total control over building factions

Or

This is not a test, true this fallout/post-apoc rule set, but the core rules I feel would give a good skirmish game, true abit of set dressing his needed, but it does come with a very large bestiary

Or

Make your own that's what I am doing

Well, I put some thought into that same question :)

I use En Garde for the skirmishes. It is a swashbuckling ruleset from Osprey and very, very good. And cheap too. And let's face it: Barsoom is swashbuckling adventure through and through. You will find a review on my blog if you're curious.
http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/02/en-garde-review-touche.html (http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/02/en-garde-review-touche.html)

I wrote adaptations especially for Barsoom: http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/07/save-princess-barsoomian-style-en-garde.html (http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/07/save-princess-barsoomian-style-en-garde.html)

And played several very enjoyable scenarios with those rules: http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/08/three-en-garde-scenarios-for-barsoom.html (http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2016/08/three-en-garde-scenarios-for-barsoom.html)

On top of that I wrote skyship rules to use with En Garde and 28mm figures: Skyships of Barsoom http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2015/03/the-barsoom-project-sky-ship-rules.html (http://pijlieblog.blogspot.nl/2015/03/the-barsoom-project-sky-ship-rules.html)

Feel free to read and use them and ask any question you like. Barsoom is a dear project to me :)

Bronze Age and Tinman for certain. You used to be able to get a lot of useful models from Bob Charette's Paroom Station line but I don't think it's currently in production.

For rules I'm going to try The Men Who would be Kings with a few ideas & unit types borrowed from Dragon Rampant and maybe artillery from Pikeman's Lament.

Bonjour Askellad,

Tout d'abord bravo pour tes conversions, il fallait penser à ces assemblages !

Je suis également intéressé par des escarmouches dans cet univers et niveau règles j'avais pensé à :
- In her majesty's name
- pulp alley
- savage core

Ghost, if you think it will be easy for all LAFers who don't speak French to just use a Google Translate on your post, please consider going to the more polite and gentleman's way like we use to do things here, and use the translator yourself to post here in English, thank you very much!  ;)

What ?! Does not everyone speak French ?!

So here is the translation :

"Hello Askellad,

First of all congratulations for your conversions, you had to think about these assemblies!

I am also interested in skirmishes in this universe and I thought about these rules :
- In her majesty's name
- pulp alley
- savage core

I bought, read but have not yet played the two first of them : the second would be in my opinion more suitable because more "pulp". Both allow to create some gangs of your own and to use vehicles (for pulp alley you have to buy supplements to have all the rules. However, downloading them is not very expensive ...)
The 3rd should be released soon at Lucid Eye Publications : lucid eye previously released minis of neanderthal men, amazons, Atlanteans, ... all races that will encounter at the Earth core in this future game. The universe is similar to pellucidar, by Burroughs, so I hope that it will be possible to use these rules for a Barsoom project and create some new gangs.

I bought some Tinman minis : they are fine and their quality is very good."

Shocking, but true. I, myself, speak only a few words of lingua Franca, though my poor benighted fellows think that means 'English.'  ;)

Your patience and good humor are a shining light to us all. We all wish you the best in your search for suitable-to-your-needs rule set.

However, I will point out that the '.de' means we should all speak 'auf Deutsch.'  ;D

Doug

PS Given my VERY limited vocabulary in German, breath-holding is contra-indicated.  lol

Rules:

In Her Majesty's Name - I like many of Craig Cartmell's other rules sets but I don't see much to recommend the actual rules here. I would look to his CROM or his Napoleonic Skirmish rules http://memberfiles.freewebs.com/47/01/40870147/documents/Over%20the%20Hills%20and%20Far%20Away.pdf

Pulp Alley - an excellent choice for small warbands but not suitable for more than 20 figures (I stand corrected - I have only played the basic game)

The Men Who Would Be Kings - My first choice since it covers colonial and native forces and firearms. It doesn't include vehicles or dueling

En Garde - Cover dueling (IIRC) and small units. No vehicles. Basic firearms.

Songs of.... - Might be a good choice. Start with their ACW or Drums and Tomahawk rules.

Post by: warrenpeace on June 16, 2017, 01:56:38 AM
Pulp Alley can handle more figures if you use the "gangs" and "crew" rules. Guns and vehicles can have a multi-figure crew, which acts as a single character. A gang of 5 or 6 figures acts as a single character. There were 61 figures in the Return to the Island of the Crocodile God game that I ran 3 times in the last 3 weeks. One player ran 45 figures, 40 of them in gangs which acted as 8 characters, and the other 4 players controlled 4 figures each.
