Hi there
DaveA and I are going to put a demo game based on the battle of Cambrai at Partizan this year...
Dave has put his weight behind the terrain(as always)...
So far we have a nice chateau...based on a number around Bourlon...
-
Some debris of war ....
A rather nice 8.8cm Kraft Flak 16...
-
I am working my way through...
British tank crew,German snipers and some German artillery at the moment...
With British cavalry next on the list...
All the best. Aly
-
Fantastic Aly . Will Deffo make the show now just to see this in person and nag you lads about knocking out a German artillery limber and team!
-
What color are you painting the Britsh helmets?
-
Excellent stuff! That 8.8cm gun and the terrain are a bit special! 8)
-
Wonderful :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Super looking forward to this since Dave mentioned it at Derby.
-
This will definitely be one to look for.
Mark..
-
Lovely that ruined chateau, Aly. Fine workmanship :-*
-
Beautiful work all round. Love the chateau and flak gun. Have a wonderful game and please post pictures if you can.
-
Wonderful, I love that there are gamers who put the time in to ensure that show experiences are memorable and inspiring. Thank You.
-
This looks very promising!
-
Love that chateau, will look out for this at Partizan.
-

Fear not Helen, I shall be taking plenty :)
-
Cambria? ;)
Very nice work so far! 8)
-
wonderful Aly (and Dave A)- already the highlight game to look out for!!
Simon.
-
Thank you lady and gents for your kind comments...
Here is something Dave has been ruining today...
-
Mad Gadgetteer ...
The helmets are blue... :o
They are based on an illustration in Blandfords Army Uniforms of World War 1 by Andrew Mollo.. showing a Tank man from the 4th battalion Tank Corps...
I believe it was more common to just have a Flash on the helmet in the battalion colours but we thought the blue helmets added a splash of colour...
All the best. Aly

Thanks! I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my screen!! None the less they look great.
-
Fear not Helen, I shall be taking plenty :)
Thanks Phil! You and David have a wonderful day too.
-
Definitely looking forward to seeing this at the show. I like the blue helmets a lot - nice shot of that tank crew in WSS this week.
-
Lovely work there Aly, the buildings and guns especially so.
-
Crew waiting for their guns...
-
More British tank crew...
-
still get inspired by Dave Andrews stuff for GW and especially all that lovely WAb stuff he did :-*
-
Please take loads of photos of the game in progress to post up here so those of us not at the event can share in the excellence of this project. This is really great stuff. I hate to be a naysayer but I am not convinced by the blue helmets. Mollo's blue hue to the helmets is misleading. But, there again, I am a nerd....

Mark...
Of course you are a nerd...
So am I..... :D
-
As it says...
Flashes on the side of the helmet were more common... and the sergeant in question may have been a one off
But we decided it was a good opportunity to add a bit more colour...
All the Best Aly
-
The Haswell Miller
-
:o :o :o
Some serious eye candy over here!
:-* :-*
-
Cambria? ;)
Very nice work so far! 8)
Typo for Cumbria. Modelled closely on photos of the centre of Carlisle on a Saturday night.
Very nice work btw!
-
The Haswell Miller
Nerd's unite!
Ally.... righto.... I agree with you that this is probably one of those one off examples and so you are quite right in adding colour to overwhelmingly khaki subjects. I do that too. I have painted WW1 Indian Cavalry with colorful pagris for that same reason. As it has shown here, it gets people talking and engaged.
Nice to see and talk about the painting research. Look forward to seeing images of the game.
Mark
-
This is going to be superb I am looking forward to seeing this :-* :-* :-*
-
Bourlon wood...
-
Bravo. especially on what looks like a scratch-built anti-aircraft gun.
-
Keep em coming Aly, brilliant so far!
-
A few more Germans finished...
All the best. Aly
-
Great stuff :)
cheers
James
-
Wow, great minis and scenics! If i may a question: what ruleset are you going to use?
-
Lovely painting guys - sure to be a splendid game.
-
Emporium...
We thinking of using Through the Mud and the Blood...
Here is another sniper...
All the best. Aly
-
Hi Aly, thanx for the reply. At my club we are planning a cambrai scenario too, since my interest in your ruleset choice. Don't worry, no competition, we won't be in Partizan (actually we are in italy) and anyway we are far away from your quality !
Mud and blood is arguably the best ruleset for this period/scale, but since we would like to run a partecipation game, perhaps could be too hard to get grip with. Few years ago we run a ww2 partecipation game (berlin 1945) using chain of command and, though it was much appreciated, was a real pain to teach in few minutes the command mechanism to a public made most of teenager/gandpas with little/no experience in wargame.
I've read that there's a ww1 unofficial expansion for bolt action, do you have any experience with this adaptation?
-
Those shattered woodland shell holes look brilliant, Aly :-*

We have used them a lot, together with some of our own ideas, work a treat we find.
Check out their Mega game scenarios for other rule suggestions.
-
Richard ...
All the work of Dave Andrews... and he has lots more on the go...
These last minute panics do make you very productive lol
Emporium...
I think you are probably right... we may do something simpler on the day...
Phil ...
They look interesting...thanks
Right... I am off to base some artillery...
-
Some more loveliness from Dave Andrews...
-
And another...
-
The German Guns...
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom
Private S Baldrick
-
I am rather partial to the war poets. I made a pilgrimage to the spot where Wilfred Owen died, and visited his grave, but I never have found the resting place of the greatest of their number, Private Baldrick. :)
-
More stunning productivity!
I think a Cunning Captain, Faithful Batman and Idiot Lieutenant need to make an appearance on your table now though!! :D
-
Hoping i get off the stand to have a proper look at this..... Think it's going to be a bit special 8)
-
The German Guns...
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom,
Boom, Boom, Boom
Private S Baldrick
Love to see WW1 cammo on guns. I just wish someone would produce a single pot of paint called "Miscellaneous Cammo WW1 Guns" where one all over coat of paint would dry to the desired colour scheme. I have also stuck bits of styrene tubing on the muzzles to lengthen the barrel of your (GWM) FK97s to turn them into FK15s! Longer reach......
-
Along with tartan paint it would be a winner..... lol
-
The finished chateau...
-
Some more..
-
Superb, I bet the gateaux is ruined though.
Roll on Sunday.
-
woh brilliant !
-
That is rather special - love the bathroom detail.
-
That's is a cracking build! The details really make it! The roof tiles, the bath and toilet, and the lived in look! :-*
Is it playable as well? It looks a little fragile..... :o
-
Now that looks a bit good.
;)
Wonderful attention to detail.
Love it!
:-* :-*
-
:o :o Stunning... Absolutely beautiful...
-
There is no stopping Mr Andrews... :o
The Garage...
-
Love the detail.
-
Some more broken things...
-
Had missed this up till now - very nice!
-
"ANTAR" :-I ...these signs were still around when I was a child. And the "AZUR" blue star was still seen on some old garages.
-
Amazing painting and productivity!
-
The Chateau is wonderful.
In fact, it's all wonderful.
Between this and Alcal's Stalingrad, we're getting some masterclasses here right now.
Very restorative, following the seemingly inexorable march of mats, MDF, and minimal effort witnessed at Salute ;)
-
Again ...thank you all for your kind comments...
We decided to add this to the mix...
It is the Foundry 15cm Krupp...a number of this type of gun both log and short barrelled versions were still in use during the war
-
How about an 88...
-
More stuff to wonder at on Sunday, can't wait :-*
-
Ohhh.... splendid. The Krupp 15cm and the 88 really float my boat. Splendid stuff. :-*
-
Just fantastic!!
-
As this is based on Cambrai, where are the tanks?
-
Aly,
All of these are both inspirational and marvellous !
-
As this is based on Cambrai, where are the tanks?
Do you mean like this?...
We have had them in the collection for quite a while...so I have just been showing the sexy new stuff... :D
-

HEY!!! Are you one of the owners of the old Great War Miniatures web site?!?!?
-
I am one of the owners of Great War Miniatures :D
-
Allo Allo ...
What have we got here? :o
-
That's really neat!
-
You just know that's the vignette ,that's going to been in all magazines. Not Dave's buildings . No Allys ' fallen Madonna ' being spirited away. I'd love to see vignette of someone being told to put the kitchen sink back.(no time left now but it'd finish off the metaphor.with a smile)
Very much looking forward to seeing all this hard work on Sunday.
Mark.
-
Just like the painting...........Priceless.
-
lol love it.
-
Stunning work on everything I would love to see this in the flesh, where else is it going to appear?
-
All looks great Dave and Aly.
Is it a quiet week in the GW Design Studio so you've got time to do all this on your lunch breaks? ;)
Really looking forward to seeing this on Sunday.
-
Now you have to paint monuments men too ;)
-
The last one is really great! Superb, Ally! I loved to watch Allo Allo. And now some conversion with sausages, please. ;)
-
I am one of the owners of Great War Miniatures :D
Cool...
I've often wanted ask why you all took your web site down, it was filled with a lot of great pics and such. Didn't you also have some really good painting guides on it?
There's a specific color of feldgrau I've seen on your minis via a couple of distributors. I've tried going through them in order to find out who painted them (assuming it to be one of the GWM crew) so as to get some contact info so I could ask about the color...I got no replies. I keep thinking your original site mentioned it. If I PM'd you with the pics could you possibly help me out?
One last thing....why didn't you all create any late war French?
-
One last thing....why didn't you all create any late war French?
No need... everybody knows that's the Americans that win the war ;D
p.s. GWM late war French would be very nice indeed! ;)

Ha Ha!!
Seriously though...in re French in general but mainly late war...
Once I started looking into purchasing minis it never occurred to me just how underrepresented the French army is! Based on the dearth of French minis one would think that the UK and the US wine the war single handedly!
Considering just how small of a sector the UK covered on the Western Front, same goes for the US, one would think the French would be better represented.

Love the
looters fine art collectors Aly. Very funny and beautifully done 8)

Well indeed. So how many will we see on Sunday?
-

I honestly can't remember... I will ask Dave lol
-
I honestly can't remember... I will ask Dave lol
It will depend on how many breakdown surely ;)
-
Cool...
I've often wanted ask why you all took your web site down, it was filled with a lot of great pics and such. Didn't you also have some really good painting guides on it?
We didn't really have enough time to do the web site justice...

No problem ... I am more than glad to help with painting advice...
One last thing....why didn't you all create any late war French?
Time... the old enemy.... like many other things... it's on the list... we haven't stopped supporting the range... it is still alive, but real life and work have a habit of getting in the way and slowing things down
All the best. Aly
-
Some 'Art'...
-
And some 'Collectors'...
-
lol I remember the Mona Lisa triptych. Nice Nebuchadnezzars too.
-
Also - is that a cavalry figure from the Perry's Travel Battle?
-
They have certainly "saved" a lot of fine art from the chateau, though I suspect some of those paintings are copies :)
-
Particularly sneaky of them to manage to get past the Entente lines, into the Louvre, and out again like that. :)
I presume that's Claude Monet's print of The Great Wave they've got there, the rotters! I hope they at least paid to get in to the gardens at Giverny.
Edit: Absolute gems, all. Forgot to say that amid my mirth. :)
-
Really, I have to say it - fucking genius. It's that good. The statue thief is brilliant lol
-
Brilliant!
lol lol
-
Stolen >:D sorry "liberated" art works lol This is a first class notion :-* :-*
Certainly in the market for art and the fine wines :-*
I like the open air bathroom in the chateau
I love all of it :-* :-* :-*
-
I honestly can't remember... I will ask Dave lol
You can never have too many tanks though lol
-
All the best. Aly
I completely understand about time, work and life getting in the way! Honestly - I was being to think that the GWM crew and the Scarab crew had come to some sort of "gentlemens' agreement" in regard to late war French.
Let me hunt down some of the pics that best illustrate the German colors I'm wondering about and I'll PM you. It might be a few days though - "time, work and life" as usual.
Chin-chin!
-
Also - is that a cavalry figure from the Perry's Travel Battle?
Yes ...
and there are a couple more propping up the artwork.... :D
-
They have certainly "saved" a lot of fine art from the chateau, though I suspect some of those paintings are copies :)
Copies!!! :o
Sir ...you are mistaken...
As everyone should know Da Vinci painted (at least ) two Mona Lisa's
One...In the morning called Mona Lisa
One...in the afternoon..After a bottle or two of Chianti called Mona with a Moustache...
Its all true ...you can trust me ...I am an artist.... lol
-

GWM LW French would be nice but the Gripping Beast LW French really are top notch :)

GB are ok....but I really don't want the hassle of dealing with the heads.

Love the "art" and the looters, especially the fellow with the magnum of champers! A man with the right priorities! lol lol

More toys

-
Lovely motors!
:-* :-*
-
Beautiful. What a stunning little character with his pipe and map. Wonderful modelling and painting :-*
-
That's Mr Andrews for you ... :D
-
All absolutely wonderful!
Funnily enough I just stumbled across some old pics of your game at the Carlton-le-Willows show in 1995 in an old copy of WI (on the hunt for Afghan army reference, but that's another story). I'd forgotten you've both been doing these amazing WW1 games for so long.
-
Lovely work once again.
-
It looked gorgeous in the flesh, that ruined chateau in particular was magnificent:

They are better than the one I was going to post...
I have more pictures...I will go through them tomorrow as I am about to go out for a birthday drink...
We had a great time... lots of people came up spoke to us... we played with toy soldiers...I spent all my (birthday) money :D.... and....
We won a prize :o
All the best. Aly
-
Which only wants to appear sideways ( on my iPad ) ;D
-
Well done on the award Aly - very well deserved. Yes please to more photos. Cheers.
-
Bloody marvellous. That's proper that is. Well done Aly and Dave.
-
Indeed LT, and here are some more, and there will be lots more judging by the amount of snapping taking place. Plus a well deserved award.

-
Wonderful looking game. My congratulations to Dave and Aly for a well deserve award.
Thanks Phil for the additional photos.
-
Gorgeous table! :o
-
So glad I got a chance to see it in the lead - photos don't do it justice.
Thoroughly deserved it's prize 8)

Good job Great War Minatures 8)
Thanks Aly and Dave
-
Sorry Beast that busy never actually saw you!(which was shame.)
When I managed to pop across Ally was in a manic whirlwind of dice throwing. Poor Dave had just been Handed an emergency bottle of beer.
Personally ( and from an arty farty point of view) I preferred the first board, simply for the colour palette and texture. Dave mentioned that you'd toyed with idea of expanding that one, however the original could only be configured in one way.
But this board is a different animal and a lovely piece of work and deserved It's praise .I know what felt odd when first saw the table . It was the colour of the boards they just reminded me of the battered boards with gaffer taped edges that use to be at the old Workshop studio. (that thought made Dave chuckle so please don't be giving me grief chaps😉)
Waffle aside loved it just too much to take in for one show. Will it make a second outing at the other Partizan ?
Mark.
-
You mentioned that you were considering Through the Mud and the Blood. In the end did you use these rules or did you use another set?
-
Lovely set-up and a well-deserved prize! Just shocked by the Hunnish behaviour inside the chateau ;)
-
Just excellent!! :-* :-*
LB
-
Big Red...
We ended up using some home grown rules that Dave put together on the Friday before the show.......
The worked out rather well.... considering lol
-
James I think that the last time that gentleman had an outing he was peeing off the top of the Brandenburg Gate in 1919...
SorryI couldn't find any pictures....

I took a few pictures of this great game.

SorryI couldn't find any pictures....
I remember that.
-
Just fantastic - so much wonderful detail. I love the German artillery park, but the collectors are absolutely wonderful (my favorite is the fellow in the Mutze carrying off the magnum of champagne) - not to mention the Landser answering the call of nature !
-
Simply outstanding. Fabulously imaginative work, brilliantly executed. Well done Aly and GWM. Wish I could have seen it in the flesh. Have you managed to get rid of those portraits yet? I know a man who could help.......
-
What a brilliant table! Any plans to bring it to Australia for a road trip?
I was thinking of a couple of aircraft to add to my collection. Any hints on the scale and manufacturer of Albatros and Se5a?
Are the Officer with the flag and pipe and his offsider scratch builds? The staff officer looks a lot like the one holding the map.
-
I'd recommend Smer 1/48th aircraft. They are quite basic but sturdy models and cheap!
The chap with the flag is a conversion representing Maj Gen Fuller. I did it for an article in WSS magazine 10 years ago
-
Thanks Dave
I've ordered a couple of the SMER models.
I might even attempt a couple of conversions as well.
-
Just by way of contrast, here is the first day of the Battle of Cambrai in 6mm scale:
http://www.wargaming.org.nz/Cambrai.html
More difficult to have the likes of paintings being stolen ;-) but illustrates the magnitude of the attack. Bourlon Wood was off-table. It would have been top-right (near the SU-85 in the background) had we included this sector of the battlefield.
Robert
-
Beautiful collection
-
Just stumbled over this project in one of the last WI issues with their Partizan coverage. This is an incredibly beautiful table. Chapeau to you and congratulations on the award!
-
Beautiful! :-*
Does the presence of that Vermeer suggest that the German looters got lost and invaded the Netherlands? They are certainly well travelled, they've obviously been to the Louvre as well. Of course they're likely fakes. Wait for the shock they receive when they try to pawn them. :)
-
Oi, Carlos! Stop stealing my smart-arse comments from Page 7! Get your own! lol
-
Truly inspiring, thank you to everyone for posting pics of this
