Title: Martial Arts wargame
Post by: rokarege on May 04, 2017, 01:19:29 PM
Does anyone know about a wargame that is based on different martial arts styles? I'm looking for something that has for example shaolin, wudang, karate, capoeria etc.

I do not feel Kung-Fu with Fistful of Kung-Fu. It is a Song of Blades-Conversion for Kunfu, but it does no,t bring the real KungFu-feeling. I thing there were a Kickstarter for a Martial Arts boardgames, but I lost the name. Maybe this would be an interesting alternative.

I think FFOKF is the closest you'll get to a kung-fu movie feel. Tough  characters, kicking the butts of nameless goons, interaction w/ props, many different feats.

I don't know what is "the real kung-fu feeling", but this is close! If you mean distinguishing between the different schools of martial arts, I don't see how that could be realized in a tabletop game.

If you know enough about the various styles yourself the card based combat mechanics from the old Dragonball Z CCG would work superbly.
Wonderful game, plays with hands of cards featuring character specific attacks, defences and combos.

Replace character specifics with style specifics and you have a good system for small duels or tournament type encounters.

Turbo Ninja is more of a board game with miniatures, but it can work:

It also uses playing cards for actions, like many other games based off of "Les Rois du Ring" (Kings of the Ring, a boxing game)

Thank You all!

I know Fistful of Kung Fu, although haven't played it. But also don't think that it would be what I'm looking for.

I would imagine it like every faction/style has apprentices, masters, grandmaster (or for karate different colors of belt) etc., with different point cost, abilites, special moves, something like that.

I think about using a dice (D10 or D12) and self-made cards. The Cards should show the move of the attacking fighter (fist-attack, foot-attack, jump-attack) and the defending fighter (Attack with hands, feet, ...). The cards make the bonus to the D10-roll plus the Attribut (Attack or defence). Maybe the cards can also say, which kind of dammage is possible. Only an idea, some thoughts about this???
