I scored a nice lot of Italeri and Pegasus plastic 54s on evilbay, and not painted similar before. I see a whole load of ideas on the internet for bendy plastic, from coating with PVA and so on. Aside from a good detergent soak, what is the best and most robust tips and advice in 2017? Any things to absolutely avoid/do? Is this any different than reaper bones?
I intend to swap any soears out for wire, so not too worried about the ulta small parts like that :)

I think a good soak/scrub (sounds like you've started that already) and then a good solid plastic primer is your best bet. My dad is big on plastic 54's, I'll edit this post if he tells me anything else.

Wash them if you like, then prime and paint.
That's all I have ever done, and I have dozens of 54s that we've gamed with for a decade.
The whole PVA coat thing is just nonsense.

Thanks guys, apreciate your advice. Is worth me investing in Halfords Plastic auto primer (or other brand plastic primers) rather than the standard primer I normally get from there?

I think plastic specific primer is a good idea, I can't speak to Halfords specifically (guessing that's a UK brand, over here in the States I know people use Rustoleum plastic primer).

Artist's Acrylic, straight from the tube, makes an excellent primer for soft plastic figures. It shrink on and remains flexible.

Simple. Give them a good wash and a thorough dry and then use a simple primer such as Halford's grey primer. It works really well and you don't have to faff around with PVA or other 'specialist' cures.
