Title: Troll Forged Assimilation Alien Host figs painted (Kickstarter Host added 6/24)
Post by: Hobby Services on May 14, 2017, 10:29:06 PM
Finally getting some paint on the figures from the Troll Forged Games Kickstarter from back in 2012.

These are among the smallest figures in the range, the basic alien grub on 30mm Reaper bases.

As you can see by the poor Neo-Soviet rad trooper here, they're still about man-sized.

There appear to be six different head variants, and (maybe?  I just grabbed a random sample for test paints) about that many body sculpts, all cross-compatible.

Cast in "troll forged plastic" which is very light and probably some kind of restic, although it's much less annoying to work with than the Mantic variety (not that they required much cleanup work anyway, they were pretty clean outside of needing some pour spouts clipped).

They're a pleasure to paint up and nicely varied, and should work well for fantasy and horror gaming as well as their intended use a scifi alien nasties.

Very nice. I have a tonne of that stuff to paint up myself. Was there very much mold release that required cleaning from it?
I have the dreadnoughts undercoated from it (I think I got 4 in total by the end) and Just need to decide on a colour scheme.
I'm keen to see more of the big stuff painted up.

This batch didn't require it, but some of the other figs are pretty slippery and are getting a bath overnight to get the release agent off.

I'll get around to more stuff eventually, although they're a low-priority side project for me.

A few more done, with the larger Kickstarter exclusive death grub on a 45mm base as a leader/Momma fig.

Pretty large, although still dwarfed by many of the other alien host stuff.

Excellent work on them. I suspect they could be useful for a wide variety of things.

As I said earlier, there are some models in the KS project that dwarf the exclusive grub, and here's the first of them:

That's the "Wyrm" model, seen here with a couple of the small grubs and the usual hapless Vor Neo-Sov Rad Trooper for scale.

Stands just under 4" tall, and fits comfortably on a Reaper 60mm base.

Comes in 14 pieces IIRC, including a separate head, the side mandibles, and the tentacles.

I took some liberties with the build, since I liked the longer clawed-limb bits better up on the head as extra mouthparts than down in the lower body sockets (now filled with some trimmed down tentacles) where the concept art places them.

Had to drill some new sockets for them, but the plastic makes that sort of job trivial.

There were a few mold lines to clean up, but other than that rep was minimal and everything went together easily.

All in all a pretty great miniature, and (allowing for my personal changes) very close to the art from the KS page.  Kind of wish I'd grabbed a couple more of them when I had the chance, they're probably going to be more than the $20 KS price when they hit retail.  I shudder to think what GW would charge for a Tyranid beastie this size.

Very nice. And this is one of the smaller big models!
Shifting the parts looks like a good idea. I'm not a huge fan of the dreadlocks on this one though (sculpting, not painting)

You made me get out all my ones from the kickstarter and start degreasing them. I've even made a start on a walker.

Ah, you remind me, it's actually 15 parts - the "dreads" are separate as well.  I had quite a time figuring out where they were actually supposed to fit onto the model, and after finding out by checking the master image on the KS page I gave serious consideration to leaving them off.  There's detail beneath them, and I agree that they don't add a lot to the model.

And the first of the non-wormy stuff:

Carnage Hound.

Biggish model mounted on a 60mm base, see here alongside a variety of other figs.

Comes in 7 pieces IIRC, and a bit of a pig to assemble.  The limbs aren't especially well keyed, and it required a fair amount of putty to conceal the joins.

It's also not very close to the original concept art sketch, although for the most part I think it's an improvement aesthetically.

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/000/262/213/89d32e637a83c74d6ef94e3509ad768e_original.jpg?w=680&fit=max&v=1352933518&auto=format&q=92&s=a840a353a2dbb0dfd8dadba511791c5e)

Quite a nice model when finished up, and very alien in appearance.

Think it makes a fine Deathworld predator for 40K roleplaying or Kill Team/Necromundageddon gaming, amongst other things.

And a random lot of Swarm Adults, human-sized figures on 30mm bases.

Single piece castings, fairly basic designs.

Weirdly, the best out-of-scifi use I can think of for them is as Sylvaneth Dryad proxies in Age of Sigmar.

They've got a mix (at least in this paint scheme) of plant and insect that sort of fits with the creepy AoS Don't-Call-Us-Wood-Elves sculpts.

The Carnage hound looks better than the art.

I thought so myself.  Which is kind of funny, since there was some discussion in the project updates about how far off-model the early stages of the sculpt were.  Lot of people wanted it closer to the sketch, but in the end this is a marked improvement in my eyes.  Smaller than originally advertised though, they were pitched as coming on an 80mm base but delivered with a 50mm (although I prefer the more roomy Reaper 60mm used above).

They should be up for sale on the Troll Forged store soon, he's (finally) almost done with KS fulfillment and I'm sure he'll want to start making more money on the range ASAP.  Or you could buy mine painted, they're up in the Bazaar.  :)

Can't make an alien host without hatching some eggs now, can you?

Small sample of the two common egg sculpts in the range, mounted on 30mm bases.

Pretty simple, easy to paint, and useful for a lot of roles including the obvious facehugger storage unit.

There's a much larger version with a bit more detailing, but I haven't gotten around to that one yet.  These work better for 28mm scale games anyway IMO.

Another of the larger figs painted up, this time an alien queen along with some of her eggs.

Quite a large model, fits well on a 60mm base.

Easier to clean up and assemble than the Carnage Hound, and the arms have far more pose options for more variety.

Quite like the design aesthetic on this one.

The mix of squishy bits and carapace are a good hybrid of the Host "worm" and "bug" types.

Definitely be right at home in a Tyranid Hive Fleet, as well as for Xenomrph/Alien gaming.

Also works pretty well for fantasy and horror gaming.

Didn't the Big Bad in King's idiotic "It" novel turn out to be a big spider-alien?

And for fantasy, I know I've got a copy of The Fantasy Trip that stats up the critters from Chitin: 1 for dungeoncrawling, and this lovely lady would fit right in there.

The KS was about four-five years late depending on what level you backed at, and they're still not done shipping the final tier rewards.  Don't think they'll be available at retail until that's done (which probably explains why mine are selling so well on ebay) although they must be getting close.  I know the last of the pledge manager stuff is being collected and processed.  The grubs on the web store are ancient sculpts from before the KS even launched, although the overall design is very similar.

Thanks!  I agree that it doesn't quite match up to the concept sketch, although it is much closer to its sketch than the Carnage Hound was.  OTOH, I like the final Hound better, whereas the Queen sculpt (while good, and very creepy) isn't as good looking as the sketch.

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/000/233/656/253bc32476462d46cf032ac59d7ec952_original.jpg?w=680&fit=max&v=1351539347&auto=format&q=92&s=6f14978a8e735883322da785713b2db8)

I think it's the slightly more upright stance and much larger head in the sketch that appeals to me.  Still not unhappy with the final model, just think the artwork was even cooler.

Probably should have mentioned that the Queen comes with two head options.  Both are similar, the one I used is more...antler-y (is that even a word?) where the other is a bit more Tyranid/xenosectoid and matches the sketch more closely.

Don't envy the rad-trooper for running into them again and again though.

Meh, compared to a Growler pack these things are softies.  :)

More paintups:

Larva Swarms, about 40mm in diameter.  Obviously useful as Tyranid Ripper Swarm proxies, but also useful for dungeoncrawl gaming and as a tide of baby Cthonians in Mythos settings.

And at the other end of the size spectrum, the Drone.

Largest model in the Kickstarter, about 11" long as I've put it together (the legs are pretty repositionable).

"Still less frightening than a Razorback bull, Comrades.".

Cast in 11 parts, fairly simple to assemble.

Trickiest part is getting all four legs on the ground.

A really impressive model, rivaling the biggest GW or Privateer brutes.

Supposed to be the Host's version of an infantry fighting vehicle, with lesser critters riding on the carapace or inside the belly.

Good execution on the belly "access port" sculpting, much more convincing than the thematically similar GW Tervigon.

Note sure the openings or internal volume are big enough to accommodate the larger Host soldier-forms, but I can certainly believe you could jam a few grubs or a whole bunch of swarmers inside while the less squishy adults cling to the back.

Title: Re: Troll Forged Assimilation Alien Host figs painted (Stealth Warriors added 6/8)

Latest figs, a unit of five Stealth Warriors.

Big models on 45mm bases, easily the size of (say) a Tyranid warrior from the Grimdark future.

Cast in four pieces, with separate arms and a heads.

Fair amount of variety, with at least three bodies, three heads, and two (or three?) pairs of arms.

Minimal cleanup required, although they did need a good soak-and-scrub to remove mold release agent.

All in all I like them a lot, very creepy and unnatural looking, and they look like the kind of thing you'd finding riding on the back of the big Drone model.

Swarm Master finished up.

Four pieces, pretty easy to assemble but not very much you can do in the way of pose variation.

Big armored boss monster for units of swarm warriors, on 45mm base.

Bit static, but still suitably creepy.

Like the other lesser warriors, big enough to be intimidating.

Another lot, this time five of the Adult Swarm Warrior models.

Cast in four pieces, with the heads and two arms on a separate sprue.

Armed with biological guns on one arm and a talon/blade on the other.

Fairly basic figures, but they make good alien nasties, have an obvious ranged weapon (helpful in many settings), and they're imposingly huge.

They all seem to come with the same head (the variant is borrowed from a Swarm Master, who comes with extras) and there are at least two body variants (most noticeable from the rear where the armor pattern stands out better).

Thanks.  It's been an interesting project painting all these figs, and there are only a few types left to do.  I did skip on getting a few (the KS let you swap out figs for other ones quite generously, and there were some I didn't care for much) but this thread will have almost all the Host figs on it when I'm done.  Somebody else will have to tackle the Hunters and Alien Hunters, though.  I stuck with the xenos myself.  :)

Finally got around to painting some of the actual Host models from this range.

Single-piece castings on 30mm Reaper bases.  Very simple to clean up and a joy to paint.

There appear to be at least six variants, as well as an ogre-sized Kickstarter exclusive one.

These are easily the best Nurgle Plaguebearer proxies I've ever seen, and perfectly capture the just plain gross flavor of Grandpapa's followers while also being something new and characterful.

Also good for horror gaming and less Warp-inspired scifi nastiness, and I could see them handily winning a "biological hazard beauty contest" against Mantic's poor Plague figures.

Pretty big too, as my poor Vor trooper here can attest.

All in all I like them a lot, and I'm looking forward to painting more of them, probably in groups of seven.

Latest model, the Kickstarter exclusive Host sculpt on a 45mm base, along with a pair of the lesser versions for an idea of scale.

Impressive and horrific sculpt, about the size of your average ogre.

Still think these figs are perfect Nurgle demon variants - especially when painted in appropriate numbers.

Lovely work. Are these available to buy or were they KS only?

He's still finishing KS fulfillment, believe it or not.  Presumably they'll be available for retail purchase after he's finally done but I can't say when that will be.  If you can't wait there are a couple of Queen-level KS packages for sale at his site from people that got tired of the delays - see here:    http://trollforged.com/kickstarter-1/pledge-market.html (http://trollforged.com/kickstarter-1/pledge-market.html)   I picked up an extra Queen set myself after finishing most of a Swarm pledge, and am told it will be at least another week or two till I see those figs, so the process is clearly ongoing.

I will also point out that all the figs on this thread have been up on my ebay listings, although all but the last few have sold by now.  See here for more on that:  http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101753.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101753.0)

Oh yeah, and here's another take on the Swarm Master, showing off one of the three head variants:

You can see the other two heads on the original Swarm Master and on the "leader" of the Adult Swarm Warriors above.
