Title: Scratch built tank
Post by: Dr. Pepper on March 15, 2009, 12:30:14 AM
found plans for a paper model on the net. Then decided to built the tank with cardboard and give the model a little dimension.  Used puffy paint to make the rivets and some plastic tube for the muffler and cannons.

Thatīs excellent! Would you care to tell what "puffy paint" is? I find this rivet effect particularly effective.

Overall, that model looks very much like a "prototype tank" for a 1920s "attack on a military base by foreign spies and their mobster allies" scenario.

This is a cool model.
Can you tell us the link where you found it?

I assume itīs this one:

http://www.tinpaper.net/

Scroll down to the very bottom of the page, I think itīs the Ford 3-Ton download. I had the page bookmarked for years and the models downloaded out of curiosity, but now Iīll actually have to think about building one or two after seeing this nice piece.

I think that "puffy" paint is the version of paint that hobbyists that make their own cards use to have lettres that lay on the paper.
They sell that kind of stuff in the hobby shop in Antwerp, might get some black from thos range, i presume you could overpaint it afterwards in the right colour.

Yes the paper model is from tinpaper.net. As fore puffy paint the official name is 3-D paint. I buy my form a regular craft store. I have had the bottle for years since I only use it for rivets and door hinges.  The bottle is a little bigger that a vallejo paint bottle. The brand I have is (scribbles 3-d paint 29.5ml) Once it dry you can paint it any color. I was able to rivet the whole tank in about 20mins.  I put one cove on the I let it dry and go over the rivets one more time to give more depth. But once you learn to control the pressure needed it goes fast.

Some new tanks, like the first one all made from card board and 3d paint. templates of the tanks are from tinpaper.com with just a few modifications

That is so effective,

you have made a delightfully proportioned model.

I would never have guessed it was made from card board.

How dd you make the turrets ? cardboard too?

Wow

BIGGER PICTURES PLEASE!

Hey, you have the talent, why not treat yourself to plasticard instead of paper? Its not that expensive you know....

Well it's also that plasticard isn't available locally to him. Like myself, I've never seen the stuff.

Quite excellent tanks, they're very nice. :)

If you can't find plasticard in the hobby store try looking at plastic signs in the hardware and discount stores. Same thing and often cheaper.

I've downloaded a couple of plans and will build myself a couple for my A very British Civil War Cornish Army.

Thanks for the kind words. The basic design was downloaded from tinpaper.com I just scratch built the turret and the cannon is just from a pen.  I just used cardboard from a cereal box. I like this better that plastic because card can be folded.  This a couple coats of plaint and all the extra card on it for detail makes the tanks pretty strong and solid.  Having a basic design makes the construction very quick to build. the light brown tank only took me two nights of work for maybe 6 hours total.  It was so fun to build the first two that the third one was just an after thought. And i think the brown one came out the best. I resize the template to make it a little smaller, and used a little more imagination to build a turret (still built out of cereal box).

I couldn't find the oval shaped tank on the tinpaper website.  Am I stupid or did you get that template elsewhere?

I don't throw away ANYTHING anymore.  I've got a box full of disposable razor handles, superglue/soda bottle/deodorant lids, yogurt cups, etc.  And anytime something electronic breaks, I throw the parts in there as well.

These tanks got me thinking... I do everything for 20mm, so there's a lot of cheap plastic 1/72 tanks out there available, but what I really want is a Mark VIII "liberty" tank to add a turret on like the Last Crusade tank.  Has anyone seen this available (I haven't), or am I gonna have to take a cue from all these great scratch-builts and go it myself?

I have been looking for something similar and came up with this:
http://pardulon.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_49&products_id=218&osCsid=cda9e1708373b0ff634d68f36a66dc2b (http://pardulon.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_49&products_id=218&osCsid=cda9e1708373b0ff634d68f36a66dc2b)
I'm afraid it's more suited for 28mm than for 20mm,though.

He does have some nice stuff, though.

Pardulon is currently on "break"; the owner -really- should have taken down the site or otherwise modified it. I would like very much to get my hands on one of his tanks, and I would nearly have ordered one, had I not read a notice about him taking some time off for the next few weeks(?). I have a feeling more than one person may have put in an order recently and been puzzled by no response.

Edit: Objection may be withdrawn. Looks like the site is failing to load.

Oops, I'm sorry to hear that. It wasn't my intention to lead anyone on the wrong tracks. The site worked when I posted the link and when I placed my order (though that's now some time ago) I was satisfied with the service.
I must have overlooked the notice that they're currently off. Sorry again!

Edit from April 20, 2009, Quote from the Pardulon Website :

24.03.2009 - Pardulon to take a timeout

The shop software needs to be updated, and quite a lot of the moulds are worn out and need to be replaced. Furthermore, Pardulon has grown beyond a scale I can combine with my day job. I'd like to take this opportunity to shut the shop down for a few weeks to have time for the necessary adjustments. Of course, there will be new models in the future, but unfortunately, a few of the older ones will have to disappear.
