Hello all. Hope to start painting up my reds when the weather warms up and with it, my very spacious basement. But I'm not sure what all the little doodads, bits, details and general uniform colours are. I've seen a fare number of other peoples' paint jobs on here, but it's better if I interpret generally more accurate material o_o. For example, I haven't the slightest clue as to what colour a budenovka is.

Uniform colours were quiet different in WW1 depending on the material available, even more in RCW when russian economy nearly broke down. So any shade of yellowish-green should do.

Yes - anything goes really. I just read "Warsaw - 1920" and the photos Red cavalry wearing mixed uniforms and civilian clothing.

Warsaw 1920
By Adam Zamoysky I believe, is this worth purchasing? I have Miracle on the Vistula which was pretty poor and need some persuading to to part with hard earned cash to buy this tome.
Regards uniform colours there is a series of books in Russian by Armada which are Osprey like and although the text is in Russian the plates speak for themselves, worth having a look in my opinion.

For my whites I went for foundry moss which is a yellowy green,
but as has been I have seen anything frrom khaki drab through to green grey would be ok in my opinion.
You should have a look at the back of beyond times link there are some painted minis there

Here is my thoughts on the Russian Uniform.
Firstly, my thanks to the guys on the SD forum and for Mike H for their input.
The overall opinion was to go for a Foundry Moss code 29B with an undercoat of VMC Russian Uniform. The latter I'd already done and was working on the second and third layers. Frustrating as it was, Mike H also gave me a link for the colour convertor of different brands(see below):
http://colors.silicon-dragons.com/full_line.php
Not wanting to buy one bottle of Foundry paint, I used the link as a guide. Now I only had one of the colours so I then took a quick look at my holdings and came up with this forumula.
Base coat - VMC Russian Uniform;
Second coat - VMC Yellow Green (1 part); VMC Tan Yellow (1 part); and VMC Khaki (2 parts).
This was drybrushed over the base coat and the results are below. I used my Battle Honours (BH) Russians with the officer converted from the artillery pack and given a new position of the right arm an a new pistol hand.
The second is a warrant officer class two, field telephone operator.
For another colour to use on your service tunic for the Russians is GW Graveyard Earth.
The BH Cossack officer is painted up as a part of the Savage Division. Using the Osprey book "The Russian Army 1914-18" Plate G3.

Waste of money IMO. He adds nothing to the topic that isn't better covered in Norman Davies White Eagle Red Star. Which is both strange and also a great pity, given that Polish and Russian archives have become much more accessible since Davies wrote the seminal work in English. Doubly strange as Zamoysky speaks Polish. Actually there are bits in Zamoysky's book which appear to be lifted, unacknowledged from Davies.
Save your cash and buy the Davies book instead.

Oh and in Zamoysky's defence he did write a monograph about the border battles, Battle for the Marchlands which was generally well reviewed. Alas it's out of print and nigh impossible to find.
As for the original Q. Khaki, khaki and 600 permutations thereof. Budienovkas were nominally grey. Do beware of wargamers depictions. Especially those showing Reds wearing the hated pogoni ( shoulderboards) No Bolshevik would have done that. ;)

Quite right, and thanks for the info.

Warsaw 1920 is Battle for the Marchlands basically reissued. Presumably his fame has made his earlier monograph now marketable. It is disappointing that he didn't take new information into account.
I prefer the Battle of the Marchlands to White Eagle Red Star on balance, but they are pretty similar. Both are better than Warsaw 1920 to a wargamer.

Thanks Mark I had only heard of it by reputation. Was gulled into thinking it was a seperate piece. Won't bother doing a serious hunt for it now.
