Title: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog
Post by: Breazer on May 31, 2017, 05:50:12 PM
Some time ago I started a small army in a different thread that I would be able to pit against my friend but it seems it is on hold due to the new 40k coming out soon.

I took the chance to start working on more guys in chainmail. In the end that is the medieval period I love the most. Here are my first models. These are all footsore with replaced shields.

Very pretty stuff there. Where did you get the flag from?

I made the flag myself. Got the idea from http://wappenwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page and I picked one I liked from there.

A small update. More men at arms made from various fireforge kits.

Lovely work. :-* :-*
Good mix of miniatures.
Did you check the normans from foundry casting room?
They have some interesting poses and equipment suitable for what you are making.

Thank you guys.

@rumacara, I know the figures but for now I'm so stocked up on these I'll be good for a long time I think. But thank you for the tip, I might get a few in the future.

Thank you for the kind words.

I finished some more men at arms. These are all footsore again. I also painted up the battle priest. He will likely not be part of a standard unit but it will be nice to just set him in one when the game i play allows it. Gives things a bit more narrative maybe.

Rather excellent. Lovely work on the heraldry, and nice battle damage on the shields.
And a nice and solid palette with muted colours playing up against the blue and white.

Really good stuff!

You can mix very well the Fireforge Foot Sergeants parts with the Frostgrave Plastic Soldiers - I am pretty much sure they are sculpted by the same artist and have the same proportions overall!  ;)

I am using a lot of the gripping beast vikings parts here and there since they match really well too. I believe they are the same sculptor too. thank you though.

Thank you Tom, maybe one day. I will want to flesh out these guys quite some first. I currently dont have a place where I know anyone that plays Lion Rampant or a local club that does anything besides play warhammer.

Indeed! I also like very much the plastic GB Dark Age Warriors for civilians and peasants!  ;)

This guy is a very good EbayUK seller with lots of plastic sprues: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/secondcitygames/ (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/secondcitygames/)

oh that is indeed useful. Thank you. I am pretty much set for now with 2 boxes of several plastic kits and about 40 footsore archers and spearmen. Will likely finish those first but if I ever need something this is a good place to look.

I usually prefer clear and thin bases, but you bases really makes the figures stand up, CONGRATULATIONS!!!  ;)

Beautiful work. The faces, the hand painted shields with battle damage, and the tarnished mail and helms are all very well done. It's certainly a warband to be proud of.

I am so glad you like them!
Everyone knows any good medieval army has archers. So I made some too.
These are footsore models too. They dont particularly look like they are in the right time setting but I really like the models a lot so I'm just rolling with it. These are the first three!

I got me this too for later on. This is probably the best kit coming out from gripping beast. The horses are just as big as the ones from fireforge so that is a win. But the box is just also really nice.

Thank you so much for all the nice words guys.

@Antonio J Carrasco: I am thinking lion rampant. I am basically just painting what I like for now and slowly I'm fleshing out units that I'll group up and post here once they are set up. Everything else will just be a nice bunch of models that one can add to units for narrative purposes or when you think it looks cool (I'm likely gonna play against my own models with the GF at some point)

I have been tinkering a bit about with how to create a nice and diverse unit of mounted models. I think I have finally made something for them.
This is what they look like now (with lots of cutting and glueing, greenstuffing and half primed parts from older models)

I will likely work on these before I move on to something else.

It has been quiet here for way too long. Did not really have the motivation to make big steps. I took up my brushes again a couple of weeks ago and managed to finish some fun things for this project with likely some things to come.

I made these new knights. They will probably not be in the same unit as the one I posted here already.

Thank you very much!

I have another small update. I finished a knight with banner to run next to the previously posted knight. Some men at arms that I will probably flesh out at a later stage. They will all carry swords and axes most likely. I had not yet the time to finish their bases as I didnt know exactly what to do with them.

The knights will also take a bit of a pause as I will try to focus on the blue knights a bit more. For a viewer that won't mean much but I will want to try to finish one army this year still. I hope I can make it although I fear I won't. These miniatures will eventually be their opponents though.

thank you for the nice words. The poses are a constant issue with the plastics unfortunately.

I finished the lord for my blue army. I read about a knight named Robert the broken hearted. It is an entirely different time period but I loved the name so much I decided to use it for this project.
He is an older knight and I've tried to make him look similar to the leader of my men at arms unit. I have him the aketon under the chainmail. It's not something that stands out too much but its a fun little detail. To me it is at least.

This is the third knight for the unit, also all in chainmail because I like the gritty look that it gives.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I use the wirespears to make sure this army has something that ties it together next to the same style of basing.

I have been working a lot on this force lately and even though it would be easy to deviate to a different project I am determined to finish this 24 point army before this year ends.

I have finished the archers and now have the basic units for this army done.

Fantastic, they look great all together! The use of uniform colours on the shields and flags, but a more varied approach to the clothing (and varying the shield designs), really works well. They look like a unified force, but not like unrealistic clones.

Thank you for the kind words!

Some time ago I said to myself I will finish my lion rampant 24 point force this year still. I was dreading not making it but today I did. I finished painting all 48 miniatures. I have painted a lot more this year but not all for this army.

I took a shitty picture with my phone for now but better ones will follow soon. The goal I went for is reached!!

For now I am just really happy I finished these and here is the proof.

I will keep adding to this force, probably make an opposing side for them too and just keep adding things I think are cool.

Hey everyone,

first of all, happy new year!

I am starting off the year with the promised better pictures and some more!
I took the chance to also take a few pictures of all my models put into a nice little set up.
You might see some models that are new. That has everything to do with the fact that I have not been idle on the painting front and am painting up new things already again. But as this project is starting to really come off the ground expect me to take more fancy pictures of them all set up!

This is probably my favourite shot:

These guys also remain very characterful.

Thank you, the damage is quite simple. You use a darker brown/gray to max some random cuts or dots onto the shield. then you thinly underline it with a brighter colour of the base colour underneath it. Make sure on the dents that you dont change side of the underline too much so it all looks in sync and there you go.

Mainly just a few guys to escord a baggage train.

They look well suited to that job, the walking horse poses in particular. Are they the new Conquest medieval horses? How do they scale with the Perry WOTR ones?

They are the same horses as the conquest normans, Slightly bulkier than the perry's. I hightened them a bit on the base to make them align with the fireforge ones. I dont think you can really mix these with perry things. Also I had a lot of trouble making the new conquest kits work so far. I wouldnt really recommend getting them unless you just want a few more parts to convert all the other not entirely fulfilling plastic kits with. Even then its questionable but it offers a few new things.

I'm currently just hoping footsore will soon get their barons wars things underway soon.

Hey there,

Some time ago I bought me this set of miniatures because I really liked their look.

It is a set made by Gripping Beast and I really think it is one of the best kits they have ever made. Even the box they come in looks really nice. I wish they would do more like these.

Recently though I started working a lot with the conquest horses and I started altering models to fit on them. I raise them a bit so they are just as tall as the Fireforge ones and at first glance it is hard to tell the difference. I do like them a lot more than the Fireforge ones. The horses that come with this kit are fine. I believe a lot of the footsore miniatures sit on the same ones but they just dont match the other plastic ones I have used so far.  I want my templars to also fit in with my current models so I started working on them to fit on the conquest horses.
I also wouldn't be me if I didnt alter these to my own personal flavour a bit.

Here is the first one.

Time for more knights.
It was time to create another red knight. Slowly but surely I am expanding the red forces. There is still a lot to be done but i'm sure i'll finish this army sooner than the last one. I am just mixing them up with templars now to not paint the same each time. This guy is based of the new conquest knights with a lot of modifactions. I often replace the torso's entirely so they look less silly.

A small update and maybe not entirely fitting here but good to post either way.

I am still slowly painting miniatures for various projects too, but something that has been bothering me for quite a while now is how I treated my terrain boards when I first wanted to add gras to it. I had never done this properly before and therefor I think I messed them up good. I have managed to always keep this fairly invisible in my pictures but The day would always come that I would have to redo it.

I dreaded doing it for quite some time because it feels like a huge timesink and I frankly don't really have the space to do it in. But today I have begun the venture into new and better terrain nonetheless.

Cleaning the boards as they were was the first big step. I made use of the nice weather to grab some sun while I was at it.

After cleaning them they look somewhat decent again. When they are dry I will move on to the next steps.

Working up the courage to do the exact same thing - scrub off the solid patches of flattened static grass and get some varied flock on there instead.

Looking forward to see how that table of yours shapes up!

Poking my head back in here to say that I bought a pack of the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ entirely based on the paint job you bestowed upon them. They really are lovely sculpts. Not sure yet whether to paint them up as their historical namesake, as Hospitaller hearthguard for Saga or for my more fantasy-oriented Black Order.

Very keen to see how your board ends up looking.

Hey everyone,

It has been a while since I have posted something. That has everything to do with a lot of things going on in the non hobby world. And to make matters a little worse I have decided to let things that I was working on lie for a bit and work on this first. This will be a new force that I have carefully planned out and am slowly working towards finishing. I have finished the first few mini's for it and when I can find the motivation I will make some pictures of them in a better set up. To compensate I did make this set up of the new army marching to war. I hope you enjoy.

They look great, another cinematic shot!
I'm intrigued by the out-of-focus terrain in front of them...

The terrain board looks like a real success as well, by the way. Have you considered putting some little rough patches of flock on the area of bare ground, to break it up a bit? Perhaps to make the border of the grass and the bare ground less extreme.

Hey everyone,
I've been working on more miniatures and pictures and have in the meanwhile started a facebook page where you can follow my work too. I will just be posting cool pictures there though. Not so much the non scenery pics.

These are the miniatures you could also see in the previous picture. They are part of a new force that is kind of a fresh start where i'm trying out some new things (like a new basing style) and perhaps less of a united colour scheme. Over time I will try to haul some of the already finished miniatures over. Next to this I will be working on more cool themed pictures in the future.

This is the lord with the first spearmen for the next unit. All the bases will be finished at a later stage.

You're really getting the 3d effect on the shields right. Great combination with the simple heraldry. Excellent stuff.

Great stuff!
But we wouldnt expect any less from you by now :)

What parts did you build the spearmen from? Fireforge and conquest games bits?

Thank you all for the kind words.

@Munindk: I have been using all the miniatures. Most of the base ones are footsore miniatures (saxons) or crusader miniatures (normans and some el cid) and they received some arm and headswaps. There is some fireforge games ones in there too and lots of plastic conquest and gripping beast parts too.

I got me one of the wargames illustrated miniatures and thought he would look cool in a picture.

These are the miniatures I still finished that day to take the picture.

Hey everyone.

The picture project went faster than finishing the next unit. I got really excited when this miniature came in today and I sat down and finished it so I could do the picture I had planned for him.

I called this one, Lionheart. I hope you like it.

Advancing the project that is. I have just finished painting my second unit of spearmen. Next to that I also finished a few cool miniatures that hold banners. You can never have enough banners. The whole bunch finished made me able to take take picture above.

Nicely disected Rumacara. Arms are gripping beast. The chain coil is from the medieval knights set from conquest and the head is indeed a crusader head.

Hey there,

I only now just realised I never posted proper pictures of my mounted serjeants with the 3 blue lions as crest. I figured I would quickly make up for that by posting them still. I have also added 2 pictures of newly finished knights. The bearded man in red will be the lord for this army. His unit will soon follow entirely. There is a lot on my painting station right now and I intend to get through it all in due time. As this army is getting to a point where I am happy to just add things in the future I will just post here what I am working on in no particular order. Hopefully it will all get finished and I will be able to let it all come together.

The lord in red still needs a name so if anyone has a cool sounding french name I'd love to hear your suggestion.

thanks Malamute, Most bare heads are metal. I rip them off all kinds of dark ages miniatures or anything that looks right. The Yeomen so far have 1 metal head. The guy on the left, the other two are plastics. The guy in the middle is fireforge and the right one is Dark Age warriors by gripping beast.

Good! As great as plastic is, I don't think you should rely on just plastic heads. If a metal head can be sawn off neatly, do it!!!

I remove the heads of ALL my metal Perry miniatures if it's a clean cut, simply to swap them all round so they don't look like everyone else's. :)

Westwind make some very characterful heads for their 28mm Arthurian range and they are available seperately from the figure packs.

https://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=192_69_145 (https://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=192_69_145)

They even knocked up a custom pack for me of heads from various different packs (though it did cost me extra). The heads scale well with the Perry and Northstar bodies I’ve tried.

Hello friends,

I have been working on another picture again. This time using templars I have painted a while ago. I have been meaning to do something with these miniatures for quite a while. I have a bunch more of them but swapping the horses has been very time consuming and other things got my attention instead (as you do in this hobby). I fully intend to finish the templars at some point because I really like the miniatures and the sight of 12 of these bad boys riding next to one another, banners weaving in the wind, will be quite the sight.

For now I will have to make due with this picture of them traveling to a religious place. I named this picture Hallowed Destiny. I hope you enjoy.

Have to say, this is one of the most inspiring painting logs across the wargaming hobby I've come across. Been following this for a while and am almost at a stage where I can try out some similar shots of my miniatures with terrain edited in a similar style - will give full credit when I post them up on my Black Order or The Dark Gathers logs. I hope you continue to turn out material for this log, it's really something quite special.

Title: Re: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog
Post by: Breazer on February 14, 2019, 09:36:45 PM
Well, I have been working a bit on my red guys, they need one more yeomen finished before the whole unit is painted. I build a whole bunch of miniatures for the blue side that I have been painting at random. I have also made some red knights that I think will make for nice leaders in pictures. The red side has been a bit poor on leaders. I should take some decent pictures but I'm moving soon so it has been a bit on hold.

You've convinced me.

I have been saving this picture for a while now hoping I'd have some time to create a few more shots that would match this one in some kind of series. I've not been able to really land the idea in a result I'm happy with. I will keep trying of course but since I am moving soon I figured I would post it already.

It is one of those pictures that grew somewhat organically. I worked out where everything was supposed to go as I was looking through the lens and making everything match and work out. Those are the most fun to do because you can really make something great step by step.

This picture also features several of the yeomen I've been working on and that are now almost finished.

I named it: Cold Steel

Title: Re: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog

The pennants are just paper glued together with regular hobby glued. I fold them around different size brushes when the glue is still wet to get the shapes. then it dries just like this and it is quite sturdy.

Hey there friends,

The last couple of weeks I have been working hard on picking up my medievals project. I really enjoy coming back to this with new ideas each time.

My dream has always been to have this basic set up of two armies done and to just be able to expand on them with whatever I feel like. I am closing in on this now and I have never been more motivated to get there. Next to that I have been trying out new things to make my miniatures look more interesting. It is sometimes really tedious to have to kitbash everything but it also offers great options to try out certain things.

I have half of the white men at arms done with the speartip as weapon. They will all be carrying handweapons and shield. Most of them will be swords because I think its a very iconic weapon for medieval times. I think it should be featured a lot in my armies.

This is a small taste I suppose of what that "whatever I like" looks like. A unit with no set allegiance (like the red or the blue side)
I can just pick these up and field them on either side and make the armies a bit brighter and varried.

That brings me to my next unit.
They are an extension of the yellow knight I have painted before. He still lacks a unit but I really like his colours. Fun fact I always pick yellow as my go to colour in boardgames but I have never painted a yellow army before. Maybe this is a step in the right direction.

Finally I worked on the blue knights. Robert the Broken Hearted's own unit. I wasn't happy with them before and I think these look a lot better.
The one on the left used to carry a different shield and colours. Now he serves a new lord!

Thank you all so much for the kind words!

With the showing results I have really been enjoying working on these armies. I have been very motivated to round these forces out. At least the basis because I don't think I can ever actually finish these armies. I've talked about my dream of having these forces done and just be able to expand on them in all calm. I have some great ideas for future units but I will finish these first.

Back to when I first started this project. The command for this unit are unaltered miniatures except for the base. The rest of the unit is entirely new miniatures. I really love the footsore miniatures but I prefer the spears upright pose. I just love the sight of all those spears lined up. I think they still look dynamic

The next one is also 2 altered miniatures. I made some knights to lead my red force in to battle. I wasn't too pleased with them in the end. Mainly because it didn't look like they were really part of the same army. I was also not too happy with the lack of head protection my leader had. I think it is a warhammer thing to give unit commanders a different weapon and a bare head to make them stand out. I do think it is nice to add a bit of character this way so I will continue to do so. I swapped out his bare head for a chainmailed head that I gave a little beard. He also got a name so Robert the Broken Hearted knows who he is facing. I named him Renault Bourdillon.
The rest of the unit is still being worked on.

And finally a fun little distraction. I have been asking some of my friends what if they got to choose it their coat of arms would look like. I figured if I like what they came up with I could maybe build a miniature to devote to it and add them to units swapping out some regular figures or a command. One friend had this great idea and I ran with it. There is a whole story behind his name that probably doesn't make too much sense to explain. You'll just have to take my word for it that it's cool.
This is Robert le Marteau

When I first tried out to take a cool diorama-esque picture with my miniatures, I made what I then called: "The Battle Of The Lions" on account of there being two banners of lions fighting. It made for a great contrast but I always felt like I should dive deeper into that idea. I started shoving things around and I eventually got to this very grim looking stand off.

Battle Of The Lions II

I may have shown several of these already in pictures. For the longest time I had to add just one guy to this unit and he is still standing on my desk half painted. I decided that for now I would add the old knight to the unit to guide the young souls into combat. Undoubtedly having an experienced soldier with them the men will feel more confident. I am also getting excited because the armies are almost both battle ready!

Hey Breazer - just wanted to say I've been massively inspired by your shots and am gradually working on making some of my own. Wanted to share with you but not take up thread space - this first one is set in the dark fantasy world of the Black Order and has quite a lot to owe to your style! :) http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=108013.msg1474320#msg1474320

Your pictures and models are amazing. Super inspiring!

I was wondering if you'd talk a bit about what you do to construct your photos?

Do you hand paint your background panels or are the images sourced from somewhere? What are you using for lighting (because you clearly have a good sense of lighting for photography)?
Title: Re: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog
Post by: Breazer on December 15, 2019, 10:59:54 PM
thank you all for the kind replies.

@aesthete:

the photos are 3 layers really. A backdrop (which are printed images that i like.. they always stay out of focus) The miniatures and a small terrain piece to hide the bases and make things melt together with the backdrop. as for my lighting... i try to use a solid lighting of daylight.. and then i use whatever white light i can get my hands on to light out certain things. I don't really have the money to upgrade this set up yet but there are some cool "lume cubes" on my wishlist. They should be making things a lot better. They don't come cheap though. As for having a good sense...I think i have a bit of a feeling for composition...the rest is really just looking at the image on the display and see what changes do what.
i shove things around untill it looks like something I like. They are not always great outcomes because it doesn't always look like what I pictured in my head. The most important thing I've found out is that the image needs a subject. A single miniature most often that carries the story of the image a bit.

After that I drag it a bit through photoshop, often add a bit of artificial dust and such, work some of the colours. I am planning to learn to use lightroom as well and see what that does. All in all its not very professional.

Hi!
You say it is not very professional, but it is well thought and done with much love and pain, so you deserve many congratulations!
And also you make as many trials as you can before you produce an output, which, in our eyes looks wonderful!
And not being completely satisfied yourself, shows a constantly researching inquiring mind, we are sure you have not developed your full potential!
Eagerly waiting for your new painting and photographic creations!
Thanks for sharing your method and way of thinking! Cheers!

Hey there,

I finished some archers, I had actually finished these quite some time back but for some reason I never posted these before. I figured I best do it now! They are converted fireforge miniatures and I am quite happy with how they turned out. I will likely do more like this in the future.
I hope you like them:

I have neglected the Ironclad project a bit. I still feel most of the miniatures out there are not great. I tried to pull myself a bit out of the slumb by building some miniatures to mix into my units or eventually finish. I decided I'd slowly start adding to the armies until something conclusive would come out. Expect some more miniatures here a bit more often. I have been thinking of trying the v&v crusaders. Those seem like good choices.

For now I have build 6 more miniatures for the red side i've already made a bunch for.

Really good use of the Victrix models there. Hadn't thought at all about the possibilities of converting them into a slightly later medieval period.

May I ask what you meant by "most of the miniatures out there are not great"? It would seem to me that this entire thread is evidence that with a little work and some (admittedly pretty big!) talent you can turn almost anything into A-grade material. I'm just curious as I've seen different people (usually in the more historically focussed groups) express similar sentiments. I'm curious if it's specifically about the historical accuracy of existing model ranges or something else. At any rate, I was hugely inspired by your thread in my own Black Order project, so you must be doing something right :)
Title: Re: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog
Post by: Breazer on February 18, 2020, 06:55:52 PM
Thank you Knight-Captain Tyr. It is often a lot of work. I think I would prefer just a bunch of finished miniatures that are up to a good standard. No weird hunched characters or lack of a neck. strange poses or out of proportioned miniatures. No vague details or something like that. I might be spoiled by looking at GW things. But I think claymore has proven that anyone can come up with miniatures that are top notch and full of character. The perry's argueably too but I don't like all of their ranges even though I bought a whole bunch of them either way. I think victrix also showed that you can add a ton of detail to miniatures of these times by showing some of what is below the chainmail or defining the belts a bit better. I think I can rant about this forever so i'll save you guys. But as much as I enjoy having a whole bunch of unique miniatures I'd rather have a solid plastic kit for all this that doesnt require more work than just that.

Hey there,

Small update today. I painted some of the converted miniatures. I didn't do all of them yet because I'm a little sick. Not really a little and painting with a runny nose is practically impossible. No worries though, I will get better in time. In the meantime these guys get to mix themselves freely into existing units, which I am pretty happy about!

haha your wife doesnt mind driving around with a bashed up colourful shield on the side of her car?
and its really quite simple. I take one of my old brushes that has the hairs sticking everywhere and has all gone hard. I put some paint on the edges of the brush and softly dab it on the shield here and there. After that i add maybe some scratches, fill in the dabs that were too big and give em a little highlight at the bottom and there you go.

Hey there.

I have been sick for a while now but I finally managed some painting again! I finished the Raimund of Toulouse miniature and I knew I just had to use him for a picture. I dubbed it "Dex Aie" after the Norman battlecry (I looked it up, but I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong soon enough) . I hope you like it.

Hey there,

I've been working on patching up some miniatures that didn't really have a purpose along side others that have been standing half finished in my closet for a while now. I'm slowly adding more to this project in a very effective way and personally I really enjoy this. I feel I have reached a point where I have painted enough for at least the red army (except for the unfinished ranged and cavalry miniatures that I can just add what I like to it and that gives this project a certain calm. There is tons I still want to ad to it though so I won't be done anytime soon.

I also took a better picture of the guy I used in Dex Aie.

The two guys on the left I had painted once before. I changed their shields to the red and white I use on the others too so they match. The guy on the right was a miniature that was standing half finished in my closet for quite a while. More of these coming soon (I hope)

Hey there,

I have recently started to try and pull my project a bit more together and I'm starting to ad some new things so eventually I can just pick which miniatures I like to have in my force for that particular battle. This planning forward struck me with some creativity and I cut up a few horses to make this new one. The rest of him is a kitbash of all kinds of medieval kits. He will get some friends in the near future. I hope you like him!

Me and a friend also discussed half barding and if it was a thing at all. I'm sure this must have excisted in some form or another (I mainly made this because I like the look of things and the diversity in my units) But I couldnt tell him exactly what the function of it was. Maybe someone can shed some light on it for me.
Title: Re: Ironclad - A Medieval PLog
Post by: Atheling on April 18, 2020, 07:08:16 PM
The horses look to be caparisoned and not barded.

A caparison was a means to display a knights heraldic arms and though it probably did offer very limited protection to the horse (mostly against spent missiles) this was not the primary function.

A lot of Late Medieval wargames rules give a bonus for cloth barding which is very misleading.
