Title: Exiledadmiral's Post Apocalypse - Chryslus Highwayman
Post by: Exiledadmiral on June 06, 2017, 10:06:52 PM
Hi everyone! I've been browsing the board for ages admiring the work that people have done creating vaults and wastelands for their projects. I've posted some minis over at reddit but you never get much response there so I thought I'd start an account here to share my work and to post my admiration for others.

My Fallout style paint job of Mitch Hunter from Mutant Chronicles: Warzone Resurrection. He's been on my to buy list for ages and he finally came up in a sale, the model screamed Fallout to me.

More angles in the album. More to come, not masses but I'm chipping away at my pile of unpainted bits.

Thanks! I've got a bad eBay habit, got the bases in a mixed bundle, glad to find the right mini for them.
I'm going to post up my small load of 15mm tomorrow, there's not many really. Thought I'd like to try 15mm from a price perspective but I enjoy painting 28mm way more.

Here's my 15mm bits. I got some from 15mm.co.uk and some from khurusan. Really impressed with the detail on the khurusan minis.

15mm carnivorous plants from 15mm.co.uk, good for 28mm too!

My converted lorry, inspired by various people like Molotov on this forum. Nothing like up to their standards but it's a start. I'm gonna make some more converted hotwheels cars in this scale even though I'm probably giving up on the figures. Matchbox cars just take up too much room.

And some minis! A few mutants there and a character or two. Got some super mutants almost finished by then I went and bought a load of future shock figures in 28mm and got distracted.

I'd like to get some scenery built and painted, might start that after I've painted the future shock guys. I was really impressed with the sculpt quality of them considering their age. I've never even looked at then before but I saw that prince August had a sale on and went into hoarder mode, bought the lot.

Will update when some more 28mm is done.

Hi, long time no post. I've started a new job and we've got a bit if a heatwave in the UK so I've been completely knackered and not done much painting recently. Here's my current WIP bits:

Got some good cheap eBay deals and ordered some bits from Warhansa to give my vault dweller a companion. Unfortunately my deathclaw got missed out of the order so should arrive this week. A few of these are nearly done to be fair, just need finishing touches applying.

Have to say those are some nice looking figures, and especially love the truck!

I also noticed Max and have one suggestion - since the figure has the right sleeve missing as in Road Warrior consider adding the red rag he tied to the end of the remaining sleeve. Also you have to do Dog to go with him and be sure you give him a red rag scarf too.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh235/terry37photos/Post%20Apocalyptic/Max%201_zpsup9ghodw.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/terry37photos/media/Post%20Apocalyptic/Max%201_zpsup9ghodw.jpg.html)

Just food for thought. Dog by the way is an Australian Cattle Dog.

Cheers Terry, I ought to go back to that model like you say and finish him off. know of any decent 15mm dogs that would fit?

I've got a few more blokes painted up:

Mechanic from Prince August. I really like this model and definitely need to get more civlians for my post apocalyptic world.

NCR power armoured ranger? Close enough anyway.  A Reaper mini with the crappy little laser guns replaced with something more substantial.

The start of a raider gang with mutant savage hound, I've got a few more models that will fit with these when painted in a similiar colour scheme.

These have taken aaages. I really need to get my colour scheme sorted before I sit down to paint. Got some Battle Systems terrain coming because terrain is my downfall really. Should be able to do some more interesting posed shots soon.

More angles in the album:

Exile,

I am using a Peter Pig dog with my Max R. element. I am sure I have another one. If you are in the US all I need is an address and he's yours. if you're in England and can wait until early November I have a fined coming over for a visit late October and can ask him to mail it on his return home.otherwise the postage would be $13.50 USD minimum. If you're Australia way, I am faced with the high postage for a couple of figures again, but unfortunately no friends coming to visit.

Did not realize you were working in 15 MM, so have to say very nice work!!!!

Anyway, let me know as I am happy to help if I can.

Terry

More bits done, pretty pleased with most of it.

First up post apocalyptic Korben Dallas, The Major from Heresy Minis.

Then a vault security guy from Heresy's inspectors range. It's been done before but I love the minis. Got the rest to paint at some point.

A pack of robed cultists roaming the wastes for converts. Inspired by the Children of the Cathedral in Fallout One, although I couldn't work out how to do the yellow on the robes properly with them being so rumpled so... I didn't bother.

And a close up of boss cultist, a converted Heresy priest with his hand swapped out for a Heresy SMG. Dead pleased with how he turned out.

http://imgur.com/a/Fzbn3 The gallery has more angles, hope you like!

Yeah they are great miniatures, still on overstock discount from Prince August if you want any. Their usual prices strike me as a little high but the current discount is pretty hefty.

Heyup folks, long time no see. I've been doing some 40k stuff that I've posted on future wars, I also got married and went on my honeymoon! So i haven't painted anything for three weeks or so. Thought I'd get the ball rolling again with some scenery. I'm attempting a vault interior using a sarissa precision habitation pod and some scotia grendel computer banks.

 (http://i.imgur.com/gMdr4d9.jpg) (http://imgur.com/gMdr4d9)

It's a work in progress, currently just primed. I'm going to grab some tester paints from wickes i think and have a go at some highlighting and weathering. If anyone has any tips for painting mdf scenery or links to good tutorials it'd be much appreciated.

Top stuff! Really liking this thread.

I recently weathered the Knights of Dice MDF petrol station. This was my first major MDF terrain piece and it took way longer than I expected. I'll post some pictures tonight and give a few observations about the weathering process that might help if that seems good to you.

Hi mate,

Here's three photos showing the stages I went through for my weathering:

1 - Paint with 'original' colours:

I just used the base colours I thought would look good. I painted after fully assembling the kit. Had I my time again I'd definitely try to paint as least some parts before assembly. I guess post-apocalypse is a lot more forgiving as mistakes can be hidden under weathering.

2 - Washes and inks:

After the 'original' coat was done I used a variety of thinned washes and inks to try to bring out the detail I was after. Stuff like the mortar work with the brinks and suchlike. I used mainly browns and blacks but got a pretty good result from grey in for the pink tiles.

3 - Drybrushing, highlights, weathering power and extra touches:

I used drybrushing with varying degrees of care (and success) to vary the colour and give it a more 'washed out' look. I also tried to apply some rust effects to the metal siding at the bottom of the model and on the stand-alone sign. I then splashed about some weathering power I picked up cheap at a local convention. I'd never used the stuff before and found the lighter colours just didn't show through. The real winner, for mine, was the violet. After that I glued on some tufts, static grass and model railway grass to make it look neglected.

More photos can be seen on this thread:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=104349.0

I hope this is helpful

Happy to expand further or post soem photos of the interior if that'd help.

Thanks Muzfish, that should be really useful. Were you using miniature paints for it or something else?

Another update in afraid, but no vault yet! Because I'm easily distracted I ordered some Brother Vinni models and some heads off shapeways. I've combined the two and I bring you the Brother Vinni Power Armoured Hero with T-51b helmet.

I'm considering buying a light box to take better photos, I tend to finish painting at night and it's hard to get good photos without natural light.

I like what you've done with the power armour and the OSL on the blue light. To prove that great minds think alike (or that fools seldom differ  ;)) I too have placed a recent order for some BVM miniatures.  Can you provide a link for the shapeways page from whch you ordered?

Thanks Muzfish, that should be really useful. Were you using miniature paints for it or something else?

I used miniatures paint for this. Primarily Vallejo but with AP washes/inks. Some of the weathering was done wth the Vallejo air paints as they flowed better. I was surprised by how effective the Vallejo grey wash/ink was on the pink tiles.  The weathering powder was from Secret Weapon, picked up super cheap.

Thanks again Muzfish, Brother Vinni's models are hard to resist, it'll be good to see your take on them. I have a habit of placing large orders to save paying postage twice (or that's what I tell myself) so I've got the other Brotherhood guys and a deathclaw to paint too.

The shapeways link is: https://www.shapeways.com/product/BDP6Y744K/28mm-wastefall-pa-helmets?optionId=58834615&li=marketplace
If you search wastefall he does a variety of good bits, I also bought the wastefall weapons for conversions, they're great quality but smaller than most heroic scale weapons.
I'll try some weathering with miniature inks and things then, cheers for the advice.

Cheers for the comments! I've managed to finish off some more of my Brotherhood of Steel knights this weekend. I've not painted much the past week because I've been replaying Fallout 4, it's good to get back to the source material.

I'm pretty pleased with them. I swapped out one guy's hand for a pointing hand and replaced the T51b helmet with one of my shapeways ones again. The freehand on the BoS symbols could be better, but it's a learning process.

Well made, sir.  Those are some bad ass BoS.

Thanks Sinewgrab, was checking out your thread today, absolutely inspiring. Will have to go back and check the other two threads as well.

For today I bring you a super mutant made from a fantasy football ogre. It's a conversion I did over a year ago when I got back into the hobby but I looked at it the other day and thought the paint job was pretty shoddy so I've spruced him up.

One of him menacing the Children of the Cathedral for scale :

And a before and after :

Figured i'd try to do some freehand and give him some personality and I'm pleased with how it turned out. I was going to do more with the base but everything i tried looked daft between his legs so I left him simple. I know the weapon has no real equivalent in fallout (except for maybe a ripper on steroids) but it looks cool and if. I wanted to change it now I might chip the paint. And I'm lazy.

Hello all, been doing some fantasy bits recently and let my post apocalypse stuff sit on the back burner but I'm back! I'm intending to start a proper table with proper scenery, currently I've got printed card stuff that looks good from a distance but lacks detail or texture. I've painted up Fenryll's water purifier to start, although I think mine got irradiated somewhere along the way  ;)

I ordered some more scenery and a battle mat that was dispatched Monday and has yet to arrive so I think the Royal Mail may have lost it  >:(

On another note I've ordered some bits from Amera plastic mouldings, great value by the looks but I was wondering whether anyone has any tips for a good filler material to give the thin plastic a little more bulk at the rear? Cheers!

Thanks Ockman! Got a little update today, I've textured and painted most of my Amera pieces and I'm really pleased with them. So far it looks more desert than post apocalyptic but the Mantic terrain I bought will take a little longer than the Amera bits.

I'm working on a little piece of scatter terrain depicting one of the iconic Fallout 2 CGI screens at the moment, it shouldn't take long to finish so I'll probably post that soon then crack on with the Mantic stuff.

Cheers!

Picture heavy update incoming! Long time no post I know. I've been embroiled in the world of 40K and reddit :Shudder:. I have now sworn off reddit, I find it quite toxic and a time sink, without the excellent content and cast of talented characters that frequent this fine forum.

Reaper minis super mutant, a great model with an awful pose! I cut him in half and reposed him so he was facing the way he was walking.

A very nice piece of terrain from Tehnolog. This is the Iron Curtain set, which made both pieces of terrain for just $16, which I was very happy with.

An abandoned plane from a children's toy that I got off Aliexpress. The scale is pretty good I think, perhaps a tad small but for a couple of quid I'm not complaining! I've got another one unassembled that I was thinking about using as a Junktown style barricade/shanty shack thingy.

A wasteland trophy head, some of you may recognise this as the extra head that comes with Brother Vinni's mountain horror, that presumably no one uses on the model itself. I thought it was too nice to leave in the bitz box so I made this mounted head with coffee stirrers.

The piece de resistance! I updated my detolf display case with extra perspex shelves that turn a good display case into a fantastic one! Now all my post apocalyptic minis have their own dedicated shelf and there is plenty of space for new projects in the future.

I'm very tempted by the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare resin starter set when it comes back in stock, but my interest has been more piqued by the Crooked Dice: 7TV Apocalypse kickstarter and it's one or the other at the moment. I think it's a good time to sell off some projects that just won't get finished and get some more post apoc goodness in. Cheers for reading, I'll post better quality photos in the future I promise, it's getting dark early now and I need to think of taking photos while the light's better.

Terrific stuff - lovely scenery and a great storage/display solution.

Hey all, little update on the post apoc front. I've not painted much recently and fancied something quick and dirty. I read somewhere that the Fallout Chryslus Highwayman was based on the Chevrolet Bel Air 1957, so a quick trip to ebay and a lovely red dinky car was delivered this morning. One quick disassembly, some dry brushing and weathering pigment later and I'm quite pleased with the result! Although the mat varnish I used to seal it has unintentionally frosted the windows.
