Title: New Warband! Roberto's journey (Jan. 17: Ranger, Warband done! Dragon, Yeti)
Post by: Malebolgia on June 07, 2017, 08:18:55 PM
Yes, time for a new journey...time for a new warband! Some of you might have followed my thread about Dragos and his epic adventures through Felstad. After 13 games and reaching level 51, I retired good ol' Dragos, so time for a new warband. This time I wanted to explore the opposite side of the spectrum: a Thamateurge. With spells like Heal, Dispel and Blidning Light he's bound to play differently. In addition, I always picked a Captain who is a shooter instead of a beatstick (and in two games he brought down three creatures!). So good time right from the start.
So far we have played the first two scenarios of 'Hunt for the Golem'. My mate Raz has chosen to play Skaven (Witch) and he's playing it sneaky and dastardly, like a true Skaven. So in game 1 he went off with the Golem notes, while I secured the most treasures. In game two I thrashed 6 of the statues (and two wolves and some Skaven!) but didn't manage to study the construct well. But I know it is a dangerous thing and it must be destroyed! So tomorrow I will quest to bring it down.

Enough chatter...time for some pictures! Like the last time I started with the Wizard. And we all know...

The best thing about Heroquest is...

The Wizard of course! I was doubting for a long time what model to pick as Roberto the wizard...but then I thought of the oldskool Heroquest wizard! He's perfect. COlour scheme was easy...

Awesome 80s colours and scheme and DAMN it works well. Love it! Had a blast painting him.

Marco - Apprentice

Every wizard needs an apprentice and last Fall I backed the excellent Midlam Kickstarter with a lot of goofy apprentices. This one's perfect. He was painted in similar colours, but I didn't do stars and a moon...he hasn't deserved these yet!
And the two together:

And to flesh out the list of creatures I added some Reaper Bones Spiders as Ice Spiders. Not the best models (Bones isn't really suitable for these models, the mould lines were a horror to remove), but at least I managed to paint them in an hour or so.

And their cards:

HURK...SMASH!

Another creature done...this time Hurk, my Snow Troll (a Troll from Mantic Games). Excellent miniature and loads of fun to paint. He'll also be very nice for any dungeon crawlers. Next up will be the Captain.
And the creature card:

It's a Mantic Dungeon Saga armoured troll. I have three of them and want a few more for a unit for mass combat games.

And my Captain enters the fray...Gilles de Geus! Based on the Dutch comic character and painted in his colours (yellow cloak, black hair and moustache, red pants and a shield with the heraldry of Dubbeldam). I really wanted to paint this miniature, it's maybe my favorite fantasy sculpt EVER. He's oozing character. And although his proportions are all over the place I just love the miniature. So glad he's painted now! He will see action tomorrow again. Omnomnom!

Thanks. It's all done in Photoshop. The background is the blue one from Frostgrave and the rest is made from CC0 images or made myself.

Learning a tool like Photoshop from scratch will take a lot of time, but it's worth it if you like it. And with Google and YouTube it's quite easy to do so these days.
But if you need help with anything or want custom cards or tokens, let me know. I can probably help out, no problem :)

The best thing about Heroquest is the Elf!
I always loved the Elf...such a cool sculpt and concept in heroquest. He was my favorite character! Now he is a Thug in my Frostgrave warband and in last game he skewered a Treasure Hunter with his magically enhanced blade. Epic. I painted him in the original colours.

Nooo, the best thing about Heroquest is the Barbarian!!
He was epic in Heroquest and I hope this guy will be epic in my warband. The miniature is not the best, but still, he oozes character. Unfortunately his blade was broken in the past, so the bond is a bit wobbly. But I like him nonetheless. Adds to the nostalgia ;). Took me some time to get the skin right (wanted him to be like on the box cover) but I like how he is now.

No no no! The best thing about Heroquest is the Dwarf!
A model that has a lot of meaning to many of us...as he was on the front of a LOT of White Dwarf magazines too! Terrific artwork, not so great model (soft details). But still fun to paint and cost me two hours or so. I kept his skin dark to keep it as close to the artwork as possible.

Everybody knows the best thing about Heroquest is ALL FOUR HEROES TOGETHER!
And that was one of my biggest dreams in the last years: finish these four heroes once again, like I did when I was 16 years old (21 years ago). A great feeling and also very cool they feature in my warband as Wizard, Thug, Barbarian and Templar.
I will surely do all monsters and create my own creature cards for them for Frostgrave. Can't wait...!

Title: Re: New Warband! Roberto's journey (Sept. 12: Nullmen, Knight, Crow Master, etc)
Post by: Malebolgia on September 12, 2017, 08:19:20 PM
Thursday is our next game and me and my mate strive to paint new stuff before each game. So I sat down several nights and got quite some stuff done! We're playing "The Pits of Null" this Thursday so...

Nullmen
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/nullmen.jpg)
At first I had no clue what miniatures to pick for the Nullmen, but then I remembered the Cthulhu range from em4Miniatures/Moonraker. They are perfectly otherworldly and plain alien that I liked them for these creatures. For the painting I used 'antimatter's (from Deep Wars) painting method of painting with glazes. I followed his tutorial and used the Liquitex inks to get colourful blends with enough of the underlayer showing to make highlighting a breeze. For a first attempt I am very pleased and I love the method for these types of miniatures.
And the creature cards:
So otherworldy and utter alien creatures...coming to Felstad from the...

Pits of Null!
I really struggled for the Pits! So hard to imagine something original, strange and colourful. In the end I settled for printed photos of space. I googled for colourful nebulas and went with the ones with lots of pink and orange. I printed these on photo paper and then glued them to 3" templates. Added some sand and painted it. Added snow and then used Woodland Scenics Water Effects for the weird maelstrom. Worked well...but not on all of them. The Water Effects apparently took some of the ink away leading to white spots. I had to fix these, but it didn't went as smooth as I wanted. So in hindsight it would be better to laminate them before glueing them down.
But still, I think they work well as strange otherworldly portals that brought the Nullmen to Felstad's dimension. And they add a lot of colour to a table covered with snow!

Knight
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/knight.jpg)
What a totally cool miniature. He's super basic and simple but it works so well. Love the pose too, I just had to give him grey hair. He looks a bit stooped and old. For the shield I used a Space Wolf transfer, seemed perfect for the miniature. Had a lot of fun painting this guy! Only made the black around his eyes a bit too strong, but okay.

Crow Master & Blood Crow
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/crowmaster.jpg)
The Crow Master is also a terrific miniature. Really original in terms of clothing and nice it's a female. I doubted a while which colour I would pick for her coat. In the end I went with magenta, lovely colour. And it also goes very well with P3 Coal Black, one of my favorite paints. Lots of detail, but all nice to paint. Only not a big fan of Mark Copplestone's "marble"-type eyes. I really prefer eye slits.
The Blood Crow is a Privateer Press crow as the Northstar one broke off its feet (my fault). I simply stuck a pin in this one and glued it to the rock. For the colour it just had to be red...it's a Blood Crow!
Great pair and I also am a big fan of them in the game.

Ruins & Walkways
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/frosty.jpg)
I am always on the lookout for new cool scenery for Frostgrave. And I wanted to add more height to the game. Fortunately I found four resin aquarium pieces cheap on a Dutch eBay-like site. Primed them, drybrushed them and added lots of snow. Done! Well, the ruined castle had to be altered a bit as it was a 10mm castle otherwise ;) (using some plaster and foam to get rid of some detail).
And four more walkways so I now have 7. More than enough to give an interesting multilevel game!

Next time I'll be back with my last two soldiers (Daemon Hunter & Thief) and a shot of the entire warband.

Fantastic work on the Frostgrave figures, and terrain.

The other world portals are a cool idea - I think I will try this for my Epic sci-fi terrain, or fantasy stuff.

Spray varnish may have been another option for sealing the inkjet printing before the water effects.

Did you pick the colours of the Nullmen to match the portals, or find nebula pictures to match the null men?

Great work on the crow master. Is it really a female sculpt or did you modify the mini? I had never seen any images of the back of it so I didn't know it had a braided ponytail. I am tempted to get one even if they are metal.

You've mentioned the crow master and his/her bird doing well in battle. I find them very interesting, but haven't field one yet.
What could you tell us about playing the crow master?

The Crow Master is one of my favorite choices in the game. The Crow Master makes an *excellent* treasure hunter. She's so expendable and perfect to grab treasures and move away. Always sucks if you have to have your Barbarian carry treasures for instance. But the Crow is what makes it such a good choice. Move 9 without being affected by scenery is huge! You can fly up, hide behind a wall and during your next turn you can move into contact with a Wizard or Apprentice to tie them up, move within 1" of a treasure to prevent enemies from picking them up, engaging archers and crossbowmen, etc.
The Crow gives so much options and has so much freedom. And it is totally expendable. If it's killed, you get a new one for free.
Just don't see the combination of models as efficient fighters. They suck at fighting. But that is okay, the game offers enough good fighters already. These two give other tactical options, making them super.

These were painted some weeks ago, so time to put them online!

Thief
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/thief.jpg)http://An excellent model by Reaper and perfect for a Thief. The colours I chose are a bit more muted than on the oldskool miniatures I painted but I wanted him to be a bit more natural in colours. And once again P3 Sanguine Base is perfect for shading such greens. It works so well!

Failed Wretches
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/clowns.jpg)

I really struggled with the Failing Wretches…I just couldn’t think of a suitable and cool daemon model for it. And the official one is not my thing. And then my eyes fell on these creepy clowns (from Mad Clown Miniatures)…and I knew what models I would pick!
Since they’re daemons they can take whatever form. And clowns make perfect daemons IMO. They’re freaky and can be outright scary. And I have some other clown models to use as other daemons, so this will be one hell of a circus!

Ambronnax and the Ranger will be next! And then I will have finished my entire warband too. Excellent.

About time I did an update. And one I am very happy to do...as I finished the warband!

Ranger
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/whq_elf.jpg)

Yes, the old Warhammer Quest Elf. A nice miniature, which I painted in the classic colours from the artwork. A bit of a hassle as you might imagine, but I like the end result. A great miniature from yesteryear and fantastic as Ranger in Frostgrave.

Warband
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/warband3.jpg)

Woohoo! Another Warband finished. So cool to do this one with all of the retro miniatures. Maybe one day I will add some more oldies, but for now the warband's finished and it's time to paint up a new one!

Yeti
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/yeti.jpg)

A fast Reaper Bones paintjob. Basically took me an hour! Long live lots of fur. Excellent model for a White Gorilla and I can't wait to see him on the table.

Young Dragon
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/dragon.jpg)

I bought Spellcaster #2 yesterday and thus I wanted to paint a Dragon! Seemed wise to start with a young one. My wife picked the main colours: purple and gold. Aye aye captain! Cool colours too, different from what I'd picked. Which is cool, so I paint some different colours too.

Next up will be Vampires...as we're playing the minicampaign from the Folio...

Thanks mate! It feels good to have finished it and it was so much fun painting all those old plastic GW miniatures.

And my next warband will be very, very different...here's the sculpt for the Wizard...omnomnom...

Yes! Chibis! I have bought the Super Dungeon Explore Forgotten King box and two expansion boxes. And it seemed to me that it would be nice to paint miniatures for Frostgrave AND for SDE at the same time! win-win!
