Title: 3:15 from Wolverhampton
Post by: flatpack on June 08, 2017, 06:10:27 PM
Just a few pics of the game we played a couple of weeks ago.
Got to use the train for the first time, and my mounted police too.
Used the osprey rules.
All had a laugh trying to secure the phone box in the middle of the board.
You may notice SCW figures and SCW armoured trucks.
We just said they were over for a cheap weekend in Britain.

Good old British Bobbys, on horseback, but with lances....that could hurt.

If you click on one of the photos, it takes you to somehwere called "postimage" so I guess that must be the host.

That’s correct, postimage.
Photobucket alternative, but without the bribery.
Thanks for the comments chaps.
As I said we have another game coming up this weekend so I’ll post pics.

I am trying to see if you have used the same toy train as I did:

They look very similar, but yours seems shorter.

It was longer originally. Flatpack asked me to convert a toy train set he had picked up (from modern with tanker & passenger wagons to something a bit more 'generic' for multiple wargames).
The tanker wagons were altered to flat trucks by simply removing the tops (the tanker bit, which were then based up & used in modern inf. skirmish games) I then cut out a card template for the flat bed. The template was then covered with matchsticks, given a wash of filler thinned with PVA glue.
The Engine proved a problem because during its (no doubt) long storage it had warped, very badly.
I went to work with a hacksaw, card & milli-put sand bags & managed to salvage a smaller engine. Not one to throw bits away the warped off-cuts went into a bit of post apocalyptic ruin.
I hope this answers your question.

Then I am sure it is the same set. Nice work on the conversion! The shorter engine looks very good.

Has been is absolutely right, he worked his magic on a “bendy” engine and came out trumps yet again.

Finally set up for Saturday’s VBCW game.

Using two trains this time, so should be double the fun.

This is how the battlefield looks before the troops of rural Britain enter.

Two trains passing, what could possibly go wrong ?

Ok here we go, two trains passing and it all goes wrong. An important train gets caught out by a train trying to get to the station on time.

Look at the state of this.....

But who are these 3 survivors ? Important or not important ?

Oh and by the way I am all prepreared for a struggling VBCW day ahead tomorrow.

Title: Re: 3:15 from Wolverhampton

Sabot you are right, it was great fun.

So this is how the story goes....

The Royal train is on route from London to Up North somewhere, but when passing through the rolling countryside of the rural Midlands, the nasty, nasty BUF, blow the charges they have placed under the tracks , forcing an oncoming goods train, to run into the Royal train.
On board the Royal train is old Georgie Boy, Edwards younger brother, with his German bodyguards.
The Royal party escape the train, with a few losses to their attached two army units.
(https://s19.postimg.cc/an4ym85mr/A0_D1_F559-08_F2-4514-_A813-66_A240_A7_BB57.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/an4ym85mn/)

Luckily the local constabulary are on their way, on horseback and on foot, lead by their “bold as brass” superintendent John Von Cunningham. “I’ll sort this little lot out lads” he tells sergeant Vodka-Fan.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/ifvme86gz/F1698_B1_F-_ADE8-47_E6-_BC93-9_B395_B0_A465_D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/6qrmq9fi7/)

But wait, is that a rustling on the right flank ?
Look out the BUF Boy Scouts have been holding a jamboree with some specialist courses on bomb making and train blowing up. (Always a favourite course and always booked up quickly.
(https://s19.postimg.cc/xn70laysj/EB6_ABB92-7_AFC-4700-_AF86-17583_ADB3_F46.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/k6a22fogv/)

So, let’s get this Royal to safety, and who can you rely on to support him ?

Are the police really here to help, our would it help their cause to have him as a puppet Royal in power?
What about the BUF, they could always do with a captured Royal.

Von Cunningham of the yard takes the initiative and approaches the BUF unit to ask what their intentions are ?
(https://s19.postimg.cc/f912um96b/18_EFDF44-48_A7-4130-_B5_CB-15726542_D176.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/7gaf2n373/)

After a few unreaptable comments from the BUF bully boys he returns to his unit and prepares them for action.
He turns Nelly his trusted horse around, pulls out his sword, kisses the picture of his favourite motorbike goodbye, and with a cry of “Follow me lads, this could all be over by Christmas” he gallantly leads his mounted police into a brave charge against the dastardly BUF troops.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/ifvme86gz/F1698_B1_F-_ADE8-47_E6-_BC93-9_B395_B0_A465_D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/6qrmq9fi7/)

Only trouble is.....his move distance isn’t enough on the roll of the dice, and he doesn’t make the impact he was hoping for, falling short by one inch.....gulp.
The BUF lads cant believe their luck, and with some swift dice rolling, they cut down Von Cunningham’s cavalry to a man.
That’s the glue factory restocked for the month.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/4m79p78qr/C367_BF9_A-4242-4731-8434-52_D52271_DE99.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/an4ym9vcv/)

So the BUF are now storming across the railway lines trying to get their grubby hands on the royal party (ah that could hurt)

What’s left of the policeforce under Sergeant Vodka-Fan are a little unsure after seeing their boss cut down, so hold their ground and await new orders. “Where is that runner with the new orders ?” sergeant Vodka-Fan can be heard to mumble to himself.

The Royal party have been squirrelled away in a nearby farmhouse, and are waiting for their support team to turn up.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/qy52imxkz/EBDE21_EE-_D3_AC-42_FB-_A60_E-3_BDBB8354_CE0.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/3wohcvxxb/)

Support arrives for the Royal party in the shape of an armoured column that’s raced here from Coventry, under the command of Captain Pompey-Smith.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/kx7dlk38z/DFDC9045-9_F7_A-4693-923_E-24_A5_E42963_A7.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/49fvj28hb/)

The Royal party spot Pompey-Smith, but he’s on the wrong side of the stream, so they have to break cover to get to him. “Cover me” shouts Georgie as he runs for it.
(https://s19.postimg.cc/9kus3tkab/4_A024_D61-402_B-47_E0-_B288-_B9_F02_C47_AB3_B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/ts87w4hrj/)

This leaves the BUF leader, known to the locals as “The evil sixer” (and its nothing to do about cubs, more to do about dice rolling), wondering how the Royal party ever escaped his clutches.

(https://s19.postimg.cc/49fvj1lc3/8101_C467-784_B-441_E-_AFE5-7028082479_DF.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/vk16qyo8v/)

So Georgie Boy makes it home for tiffin and all is well in the world, but I don’t think he’ll be travelling by train too soon again.
(https://s19.postimg.cc/pj3hu0z3n/8_A59_CFB8-867_D-449_A-_B700-1_AEE561_CAC65.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/8vbzrj4bz/)

Thanks to JC, Pete, James, Garry and Ian for a most enjoyable Saturday game.

The navy are all ready with their new coastal gun made by Blotz.
The airforce are happy using the grass strip just inland.

Yesterday we played another VBCW game, using the world aflame rules.

We had the evil BUF guarding the airfield, and a few rebellious naval ratings, manning the coastal defence battery. They were both supported by plenty of local militia units.

The opposition were going to make a seaborne invasion, using boats off the duck pond...never a good idea. They also had plans for armoured support, coming in from the flanks.

Initial layout.

Duck pond flotilla arrives....what could possibly go wrong ?

More militia arrive to welcome the boys on the beach.

BUF forces line the hedgerow, covering the airfield.

Supporting armour appears on the right of the beach, only to have 2 nutters run at the tanks with their explosives in hand.

German militia guard the airfield supplies. Germans helping the BUF, who would have thought it ?

More armour appears at the airfield. The BUF weren’t expecting that.

French militia and BUF react to the new armour threat at the airfield.

Back at the beach, and it is not going well at all for the duck pond invaders. Boats and bodies everywhere.

Now for the twist. A random event card is pulled, and the duck pond navy open up on the BUF, landing two great shots into their massed ranks. The BUF fall like flies.

Oh dear.

Let’s say it again....oh dear.

With the BUF taking catastrophic casualties, the right wing armour strides forward, towards the airfield.

The right wing armour take out the BUF and their artillery.

Now there’s marauding armour everywhere.

The battle comes to an end ( because the bacon butties were ready), with the seaborne force shattered, and the land forces, eventually capturing the airfield.

Good game, but spoilt by the rules a little, as we have been playing TMWWBK and Patriots and Rebs lately, so these rules with a homemade qrs, and too many unnecessary dice rolls spoilt it a little.
We think we can adapt the other two rule sets, to get a better flowing game.
Let’s see how we get on.

It was a very fun game.  Some alternative pics from my end of the table.
Here is a shot of the wicked 4" naval gun that stopped my amphibious assault!

It's first shot passed right through one of the boats carrying Marines without causing any casualties!

But then it blew up the HQ boat with all the extra ammo and things took a bad turn...

Marines machine gunned in the boats

And after a hit from the 4" gun the shocked Sikhs surrendered....

A tank sent to help didn't fare any better...

But here's some Government troops on the way to the airfield. Luckily a thick fog meant that the 4" gun could not see them! It sent a shell over but missed.

The lead tank takes out the BUF anti tank gun

Then the infantry rush forward and neutralized the bunker with a flame thrower

Many thanks to Bob for hosting the game, the food and drink was top notch also.

By the way this is how I tried to deal with the two fanatics in the first turn armed with the Molotov cocktail:

I activated the tank with an 8" move and I attempted to run them over . The umpire reasonably asked "Why didn't you try to machine gun them?"
I said I wanted to teach the blighters a lesson. There was nothing in the rules about that so the umpire ruled that they simply stepped out of the way.

I had the next tank shoot them.

As normal we moved painted stuff around a nice table, had lashings of scoff , talked
a lot of bo****ks & had many laughs. A good time was well and truly had.

Little (only one) mention has been made about the fog. It stopped a lot of firing,
'Can't see 'em sir!' and slowed a lot of vehicle movement. It was the dominant factor in the game.
The BUF (Dicemaster, Garry) took the chance card & random dice taking away his two best
units in one move with great good humour.
I had thought (erroneously) that we would fit in about 8 to 10 moves, but Flatpack is
correct, the rule having no QRS (we had cobbled several sheets together) combined
with too many tables, quirky rules, & vagaries (the last is my fault for not following
the genial advice in the rules & working out things for myself BEFORE sitting down to play)
all lead to too few moves. Poor Flatpack's stunning flank march hardly got on the table.
Vodkafan's beach landing never got a chance to get started. I was reminded of Churchill's
comment on the Anzio landing, 'I had hoped to fling a wild-cat into the Auban hills,
but all we have is a stranded whale on the beach.'

Still it all looked good & we had fun.  Next time we will try, possibly, a different set of rules.
Which will have a one page QRS.

The only picture I took. (Spanish) artillery trying to take out a medium tank.
