Even though I am a bit burnt out from the LPL, I'm planning on taking on another 'Army Painter' challenge this year. Those Darkest Africa miniatures aren't going to paint themselves ;)
For a little background, here's the original thread started by HerbyF proposing the idea:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55393.0
'Army Painters' is the most laid back 'challenge' you'll find here on the LAF- it is not a competition, no records are kept, we simply paint a 'unit' or group of roughly 5-30 figures each month, and post them on or around the 1st for sixth months- August 1, 2017 to January 1, 2018. Each person maintains their own thread and labels it starting with '(AP 2017)' so that we can find each other's project. I will update this thread with participants and a link to their specific thread as they filter in :)
Who else is in?
-
Never did finish my one last year but I think I shall do it again but maybe less ambitious. Just to to decide what army to paint.
-
I'm in and will sticky this at some point over the weekend :)
cheers
James
-
This might synch up nicely with my push to get Warlord English Civil War figures painted up!
No guarantees but I'll probably join in when this gets rolling in July/August.
-
I am in! Famously I've never finished anything... I think!
I will have a big ole grumbly on what I'm painting for it.
-
I'm in.
-
Yup Painting Romano British so will spur me on ;D Ps bucking the trend by actually going to finish one!
-
I'll give this another try!
-
Last year i gave up.
This year i´m in. I need motivation so i expect some help from you all. :D
I just dont know what to paint... lol
-
I think I'll give this one a go. A last resort to try and get myself painting before I give up forever and throw everything into a skip. Nothing else has worked, maybe this will. lol
-
This is crazy talk but...maybe! I have at least two army projects, which haven't got anywhere over the last few years, even though they should have. To my best knowledge, the core parts of my life are now considerably more stable than, say, last year. Now the biggest conundrum is obviously choosing between the candidate projects. (And maybe rethinking whether this is a brilliant or stupid idea after all. ::) ) Count me...on the doorstep?
-
I am always 'too busy' to paint but what I actually need is the social motivation aspect I.e. Encouragement.
I'm not near as good a painter as almost everyone here but in the interests of actually getting some stuff finished, count me in.
-
I do need a deadline to motivate me and I have just the 'army' sitting in my paint room - a Garibaldi red shirt force for Sharp Practice. Count me in.
This should teach me to get seduced by shiny things on LAF.
-
Two weeks after LPL and saying never again, I'm in.
Something 40k, probably, seeing I have a pile of stuff needing done and enjoying the 8th ed buzz.

I'm debating on what I want to do- I really ought to do a 40K army (I have several on the burner- Adeptus Arbites, Imperial Navy, Genesteal Cult, and Sisters of Battle) but I traditionally knock out a faction of my long-running Darkest Africa project.

I'm curious to see what you'd use for Arbites or Navy - although Darkest Africa is a splendid choice too.

Can i rehash my failed AP2016 attempt if i just alter the title?

I'd say go for it.

I didn't even manage to put brush to figure for mine last year... :( But I will do my best this year. Luckily, the new Game Of Thrones season starts in July, so I will have a ready source of inspiration should I choose to revisit that project for this year's entry. lol :D
-
I'm in. I need to get my joy of painting/gaming back and I think I will be able to put some stuff together.
Just need to decide on a project. I have Fantasy Dwarfs, Darkest Africa and lots of other stuff... what do I really want to do?
Maybe something Lost World themed where I can use Darkest Africa stuff, Dinos, Cavemen, VSF elements and all sorts of crazy stuff :)

Exactly my plan! I think I'll just do a thread in Pulp instead, as I cant keep to a timetable to save my life...
Do it, and I'll watch eagerly!
-
If it's still possible to join, I'd like to. Need to get some things sorted. Theme to be announced later. First goal is end of July (I hope)?

I made the foolish decision to start six ACW units for Sharp Practice at the same time (do all the he flesh tones at once, it'll save time. Or drive you mad!). I didn't actually even get any photos up. I'm on with BLAM stuff now and I have a house move too, but perhaps after that.
-
I've too many projects started and not finished and maybe this will provide the inspiration/kick up the ass I need. I just have to decide on whether to work on WW2 Russians, Dark Age Vikings or a sci-fi project.
-
Hmmm
I'm tempted to join to progress my GOT project. Loads of figures assembled but have stalled on painting. :o
-

I find I'm the opposite. I'll probably fail spectacularly in this whole AP thing, but I find that if don't have the pressure of a timetable I'm much less likely to get anything done than if there is no deadline at all. Without a deadline it's so easy to just keep putting it off. Ah, I'll do it tomorrow...
I am saying "I'll do it tomorrow" at the minute though, because right now here in Blighty (a country that generally has no air-conditioning, because who needs that junk in a country where it's cool and wet 90% of the time?), it's just too bloody hot to paint. :)
-
I'm in! 6 months, 6 units for Muskets & Tomahawks, can be done :D

Yes, the first post with painted minis should be around August 1st, give or take a few days ;)
-
Oh shit. I thought that was when we were supposed to start painting. lol
-
The first month is always the easy one... ::)
-
Oh shit. I thought that was when we were supposed to start painting. lol
Me too, the plan is to aim and get the army done by August, may have to change my Army painter (I hope) to Game of Thrones wildlings ;D
-

oops... :?
I think I've started too soon....
what's the overall idea? to post only finished minis? or are WIP photos welcomed?
anyway...

-
There is no 'starting too soon' everyone :)
Or even 'too late'... just strive to get a 'unit' (however you define that) and put a pic up around the 1st of the month. Easy! If your first unit doesn't show up until Sept. 1st, no big deal... I submitted pics a month late in previous years.
-
Does it have to be units from a specific army, or is a linked theme okay? Things like various GOT factions or different Frostgrave warbands/ random encounters?
-
Linked will be fine :)
It's more of an impetus to get things painted than an outright 'competition' with rules etc.
cheers
James
-
Sounds good, I think I'll join in to make a dent in the unpainted hordes :)
-
Considering how little I have pained this year another AP project might do the trick. So many choices to choose from...
-
Bought myself a Congo column, as well as BUF and LDV forces for bolt action sealion, may need to get onboard...
-
I'm in as well. I'm not sure what I'll paint yet, but I have plenty to choose from.
-
Well I'm going to keep painting. I have painted over 300 figures from my old lead pile so far this year. Just keep plugging away at it. Just primed a bunch of cavalry figures. A few Normans, some men at arms, a few Saracens, and some very old riders of Rohan. (old Heritage & Der Kreigspieler) been sitting around longer than many of you have even been alive.
-
Gonna post my first one at the weekend and get a headstart on myself :)
cheers
James
-
Since I normally paint army's as opposed to several figures this is for me!!! is there an Icon we receive? That would be cool! In fact if there isn't I volunteer to create one if needed! lol
-
I'm in.
Caveat: All my projects are for skirmish games, so technically I won't be painting an army. But I will commit to paint a skirmish faction a month. And as I'm rotating my projects by season, my AP contribution will include Old West Posses, Call of Cthulhu Investigators and Beasties and finally Frostgrave gangs.
-
Paint what you want :)
It's impetus and inspiration to get those long untouched figures the love they deserve :D
I don't think a badge is needed as it's 'unofficial' but if people want to put something in their sig then by all means do so :)
cheers
James
-
AP2016 kept me honest and kept me painting - so count me in! Not sure what I'll do though!
-
Well, I guess that it is an excuse as good as any other to stop procrastinating! So count me in! Now, my only problem is to know what I will do. Probably a Late Roman Saga Warband.

I think in reality we all sort of do that as hardly anyone is doing a real "1 to 1" army, LOL! I'll be finishing my SAGA ""Moor's" (posted a unit or two in the LPL this year before dropping out due to work) and a 15mm Russian Napoleonic army, unless distracted....that never happens o_o

OK, I'm going to join in too.
I've got a WAB tournament in November and a pile of Musketeer miniatures Late Romans (yes, yes, I know they're Footsore Late Romans now but they were Musketeer when I bought them) to try and turn into an army.
Augusts entry may be a little small but hopefully I'll get units complete for Sptember, October and November at least.
-
I will join with my journey to the mortal realms, painting the Thunder and Blood starter for age of sigmar.
-
I'm in. I'll paint the Test of Honour core box. And maybe some scenery.
-
Is it to late to join in?
I'm going to see if I can get my Landsknecht army painted.
-

It's never too late, start a thread.

It's never too late, start a thread.
This! Do it!
-
Coming to this a little late but I will be painting up some ECW regiments for Pike and Shotte. I have a few started but will add a thread later this week.
-
Coming more than a bit late in this, I formally asked Dr Mathias if I could join the party, and he agreed :D
I'll be starting a late (pun not intended) Antigonid Macedonian army, at the time of the battle of Cynoscephalae in 197BC - since I am starting late I decided to have 3 painted units by October 1st to compensate for this.
I will add a thread soon.
-
I am on to. A GoT warband. House Trant and hangarounds.
-
I've stalled out on my initial plan, I've been out of the painting game for too long and I care too much about my Game of Thrones project to tackle them now... thankfully my Dad's gaming group has planned on a Dragon Rampant campaign starting in October, and as they are more of a historical slanted group, my new plan of quickpainting some Skaven will be a welcome addition. :) Also a gentler project to ease myself back into painting as dirty ratmen are conducive to sloppy quick paintjobs. :D
-
So 2017 is over and done with.
How about a new list, new resolution?
-
So 2017 is over and done with.
How about a new list, new resolution?
Agreed! Especially as I failed the challenge in 2017 again. :-I
-
First time I have actually achieved it, though did have bit of a head start
-
Aaaaargh! Literally just finished* the last Garibaldi unit and missed the cut-off!
I think I’ve three demo games to finish and my New Years resolution won’t fit the AP profile so I’ll have to wait until 2019 before failing again.
*ok, they’ve not been varnished or based, it’s a given value of ‘finished’.

I'm not quite done with my last unit yet, it will show up late. Feel free to post anytime. No strict deadlines here ;)
-
I just posted most of my December & holiday work. I still have one more unit that will complete my 2017 DA plan. Definitely not a hard end to it.
-

and post them on or around the 1st for sixth months- August 1, 2017 to January 1, 2018.
Dammit all man, do rules count for nothing these days! :)
Thanks 8). I shall complete my Garibaldi thread in January (honest) and as the force is aimed for a Salute game, I’ll open a new thread for the Bourbon opponents and more buildings.
-
I fudged the "2017" part by about eight or nine days but managed 24+ points of 17th C pike & shot for Pikeman's Lament, which was my AP2017 pledge!
Not sure I'd do AP2018, as the 17th C/ECW stuff is winding down, sort of, and I have no army-like plans for 2018 at this point.
Never say never, though...
-
I declare defeat. Actually managed to paint zero models from the starter set. lol
Got distracted by its little brother, which was meant as a mere exercise. Oh well…
Still determined to finish the job, though. Should we just continue the existing threads and change the label?
-

If I recall, some people removed the label and just continued to use the thread as an ongoing project.
My problem is that the weather has been much colder than usual, for longer periods, and my painting room is hard to heat- so not much happening hobby wise.
-
So, people. Shall we ram a nail in tis one and start a new AP?
