Title: Choose Your Own Adventurers #17, #18, #19: Infiltrators 03/01/19
Post by: cheetor on June 22, 2017, 07:12:15 AM
(https://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/cyoacolourlaf.jpg)

In a world before the internet and access to boutique, offbeat science fiction ranges like Colony 87 (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/62661939/return-to-colony-87-28mm-sci-fi-civilians) and Astropolis (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/822163699/astropolis-ii-the-galactic-melting-pot), there was only one source of oddball sci-fi figures worth talking about: the Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Adventurers.

(image from www.solegends.com)

Suggestive of all sorts of environments and antics beyond those seen on the blood strewn golf-course-with-a-church-in-it 40k battlefields, the images of the range (and a couple of elements of similar ranges) were pored over in isolation by Axiom (https://magpieandoldlead.blogspot.ie/), Curis (http://www.ninjabread.co.uk/) and me back in the early nineties.  I expect many of you reading this did similar.  Pre-internet, those pages in the blue 1991 Citadel Catalogue were a big deal to a certain sort of hobbyist.

(image from www.solegends.com)

The problem is, despite having made the effort to gather the models together over the years, regardless of the fact that the range is one of of our very favourites ever, each of us has only painted a handful of the RT Adventurers that we own.  Their nature as one-off figures rather than parts of larger projects has meant that they have not received the attention that they deserved, historically often getting bumped from the queue in favour of the next project.

(image from www.solegends.com)

In an effort to structure the process of getting these lovable, slightly shonky old models table ready Axiom, Curis and I have decided to rotate between us, with each of us painting a Rogue Trader Adventurer, blogging about it and posting it here in sequence.  The aim is roughly one Adventurer from one of us, once a week (so one every three weeks per person).  Its not a huge commitment, but with various other real life things going on for all of us, the structure is what we want, not more stressful deadlines.

Im certainly already getting a kick out of seeing the work of the other contributors gradually appear, so hopefully some of you will enjoy following along.

We have three posted so far, one each, as can be seen below.  The titles link to the associated blog posts, which feature more information, pictures and general waffle from each of us about the model and the process.

For me this project really is a long-time ambition made manifest. A communal motivation and encouragement to get some of these delicious, characterful and venerable sculpts painted and gamed with is something to be cherished!

Excellent.

After the night of the Long Knives (and associated P45s) I lost interest in Games Workshop, and stopped buying White Dwarf at issue 97 so these are all new to me.

It is good to see the older figures getting painted.

What a great project. I am following this with keen interest.

I love those old figs. Sadly I do not own any of them myself and ebay prices, when they show up there, will likely keep me from ever owning any.
So I will content myself to watch you guys paint these fellas up.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Sadly I do not own any of them myself and ebay prices, when they show up there, will likely keep me from ever owning any.

Ebay prices for a number of those figures shown can be high Dr. Zombie, but I have found that picking them up via Facebook groups and by trading/buying on forums like this keeps them lower in cost than the... optimistic... prices asked for on Ebay.

Its is difficult to track the entire ranges down, but sometimes the secondary heart wants what the secondary heart wants.  Nostalgia is a powerful thing, gotta be wary of it, but this old range in particular represents over thirty years of hobby coming full circle for me, so it generates a unique sense of satisfaction.

At least, that's how I justified buying them to myself anyway  lol

I love these group projects you guys do - this is brill!

Thanks Jagannath!
Group projects are great for motivation.  If any of your mates are reliable sorts then I thoroughly recommend trying it with them.

fantastic start to a fascinating project - will be keeping a close eye on this! As you say they are some of the most characterful models to come from GW in the 90's.

With cheetor and Curis having completed models #2 and #3, it's back to me for #4. I'm selecting my initial figures as an Inquisitorial retinue, so the obvious first pic to accompany an Inquisitor is clearly a short and grumpy looking cook!

Dr. Zombie – with patience anything is possible, even reasonable prices on obscure miniatures.  I'm slowly getting my hands on these figures, and luckily acquiring them at a speed about the same as I can paint at.  The last few in the set will be a challenge.

*********

I've painted number five!  Nebuli Tsar, the Ventolin Pirate.

(http://www.ninjabread.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/ventolin-pirate-and-squats.jpg) (http://www.ninjabread.co.uk/choose-your-own-adventurers-episode-5-nebuli-tsar-ventolin-pirate/)

He's got a number of design similarities with the LE02 Space Marine.  I wonder if he was a rejected design.

 8) 8)

Some wonderful nostalgia-riddled offerings of eye candy already offered up and plenty more to come, I reckon.
 :-* :-* :-*

I can sympathise with this idea having fallen for this range in a big way when they were first released.
I have picked up a few over the yeras but have only painted a couple, I think, that Inquisitor being one.
I must look away now before you distract me from what I should be painting..... ::)

Nicely done, he's great - I see what you mean about the design similarities... I love that era of kneepads/ribbing/fur lined boots. Really iconic.

Lovely work on Silvo and Tsar lads!

Each one makes me want to paint that sculpt, which is exactly the point really.

I must look away now before you distract me from what I should be painting..... ::)

I struggle with precisely that too, yet what are these things that I should be painting?

Toy soldier painting scheduling is an arcane process, based on all sorts of weirdness :)

I think that this thread is pretty much right up your street Mason.  I hope that you will enjoy it.

Brilliant idea for a project, and the entries so far have certainly lived up to the potential! Excellent stuff - while I was too distracted at the time they were released to really WANT these miniatures, I was still aware of them, and now, as then, I can still appreciate just how oddly cool/coolly odd they are. Seeing them get the painting love they deserve is very satisfying. Looking forward to more.

I painted another Space Pirate!  He isn't strictly part of the project, but I've been wanting to use the first two figures (which both happen to be pirates) in games of Shadow War Armageddon.

Title: Re: Choose Your Own Adventurers: #6, Joan Grace, Null Maiden 09/08/17
Post by: cheetor on August 09, 2017, 06:13:33 PM
A bit later than intended, Joan is one of the really rather shonky "female space marines" from the Adventurer range.

I originally planned to paint the figure to match a marine chapter, to ignore the arbitrary definition of the Astartes as a boys club, but then I decided to paint the model roughly like the modern Sisters of Silence.  Roughly.

The model was rough and I didnt feel compelled to sped too much time on it, but realising that it looked a lot like Grace Jones certainly helped.

Joans blog post, with a bit more info is HERE (https://sho3box.com/2017/08/09/choose-your-own-adventurers-6-joan-grace-null-maiden/) for anyone interested.

Axiom is up with #7 in a few days I think.

A couple of weeks is the same as a few days, right? ;)

My latest addition is Cinereal Jeannie, suitable psychic support for your roving Inquisitorial types. In contrast to cheetor's shonky female space marine, I think this Psyker is rather delightful, delicate sculpt for its age.

She's destined to accompany Inquistor Clousseau, my first model in the chain.

Lovely, lovely work Axiom!

Suber - the oddness of the pose might (I'm just guessing) be due to the fact that the mini's tab says "civilian" (as does one of the pilots, the unarmed one). Maybe she was originally meant to be terrified (or hungover lol) rather than casting a spell. In any case, the two "civilians" are both holding their heads as though they can't believe the pandemonium breaking out around them.

(While I'm being a RT geek: the Ventolin's tab says "trooper" - now that would have been a cool looking army).

Some old miniatures are a joy to paint.

Some are not.

Some others manage to end up accidentally looking like Rick James sister in space.

After cheetor's excellent bronzed armour, I've gone for a functional and less vibrant colour scheme with my Pilot:

The poor fellow is rather stressed about something - instructions being barked down the comm feed, excessive background noise, or perhaps the latest teen pop song in his cans.

You can of course read more about him here (http://magpieandoldlead.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/choose-your-own-adventurers-10-rico.html).

Curis will take the next figure :)

I'm speaking for Curis here, I hope that he doesn't mind, but these are the only other photos of those Salamanders (https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-EU/Salamanders-Upgrade-Set) that I recall seeing.

CYOA #12: Doug Orewell, Squat Miner

One of two Squats in the RT Adventurer range the "Squat Miner" is one of the figures that didn't appear in the 1991 Blue Catalogue, which meant that the figure was essentially invisible to many until some time this century.  Painted versions don't appear terribly often, so it was nice to get this little guy finished and photographed.

I found this guy more pleasant to paint than either of the Female Warriors that I painted recently.  It's a mildly dodgy casting of an old sculpt, but had plenty of fun details to work on too.  It means that I feel a bit more motivated about this project than I have for a while, I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some more.

I matched the colour scheme with that of my Construction Crew project from a few years ago.  Doug fits in nicely there.

More info and images can be seen in the blog post (https://sho3box.com/2017/10/10/choose-your-own-adventurers-12-doug-orewell-squat-miner/) if desired.

That's #12 done.  Axiom is up next in a week or so and then Curis again after that.

Thanks for looking!

Hee hee.  Those ones on the Forge World site actually are the very same ones in my Indiana Jones photo.

What can be more representative of the Adventurers range, than a gangly, gawky, bald Navigator?!

He marks a final punctuation point for Inquisitor Clousseau's retinue, hence the display base.

Title: Choose Your Own Adventurers #14: Necromunda Mauretania, Space Amazon
Post by: Curis on November 29, 2017, 12:58:19 AM
Necromunda’s just been re-rereleased, and there’s a piece of art floating around in White Dwarf and Warhammer Community that doesn’t correspond to any of the miniatures released yet, but is a lovely call back to a of 1980s classic.  Presenting Necromunda Mauretania.

Title: Choose Your Own Adventurers #15: Rex O’Thermic, Squat Engineer 07/12/17

Rex here is sort of the companion piece for Doug Orewell (https://sho3box.com/2017/10/10/choose-your-own-adventurers-12-doug-orewell-squat-miner/) that I painted the last time.  I doubt that the figure was sculpted as part of an intended duo, but as only two squats appear in the "Adventurers" range, they are a de facto team I suppose.

Rex seems to either getting in/out of an environment or space suit in a hurry, while using binoculars.  I find myself wondering what he is supposed to be doing...

Some more chat and photos about dwarfs in space in the blog post (https://sho3box.com/2017/12/07/choose-your-own-adventurers-15-rex-othermic-squat-engineer/), for anyone interested.

Axiom is up next, then Curis.

Thanks for looking!

Judda came into being as the personal bodyguard / geneclone / love interest for my Water Seller I used in a campaign at the end of 2016 and early 2017. He didn't get shown online, but has been through a host of character-defining escapades! Hope you like him!

Cool thread. I spent hours poring over the 'Adventurers' advert page in WD 99.

A few years ago I made the last stretch and picked up the few I was missing. Space Amazon was hard to find and pretty pricey at the time...

Great work guys, love it!

Title: Re: Choose Your Own Adventurers #17, #18, #19: Infiltrators 03/01/19
Post by: cheetor on January 03, 2019, 08:55:17 PM

I painted some humans with mechanical upgrades/robots with biological hindrances.

The three figs, the Adventurers "Test Bed Slave" and "Cyborg", plus the Talisman Timescape "Cyborg", were painted for use as "Infiltrators" in my slowly expanding Necron army, which has a "Terminator" (movie) leaning.

In game terms I will field them as "Flayed Ones" for minimal fuss, hence the weird stag night image below.

The full blog post HERE (https://sho3box.com/2019/01/03/choose-your-own-adventurers-17-18-19-infiltrators/) has some more info and photos etc.

The next CYOA post will be from either Axiom (https://magpieandoldlead.blogspot.ie/search/label/Adventurers) or Curis (http://www.ninjabread.co.uk/tag/rogue-trader/), but who knows?  The future is not set...

Aren't they all a little bit weird? ;)

Brilliant thread,great inspiration!
I have most of the earlier Spacefares range, time to do some more.

The Adventurers range is a lot like the Spacefarers range really, more like RPG figures than a battle game range.
The old Spacelords range (available from Moonraker (http://moonrakerminiatures.com/personalities.htm) these days) has some nice figs that fit this vibe too, as do the Colony 87 and Astropolis ranges.  We are spoiled for choice these days.

Really nice. The good thing about 40K is that these can be used as Necron infiltrators, Mechanicus Servitors or even Iron Hands novices :D

They could even be passers by in a Mega City 1 or cyberpunk environment.  Surprisingly versatile!
