This is looking to shape up nicely. I've been interested in the 1st War since reading Taipan back in the mists of time, and the second since Flashman, but could never quite warm up to the stuff that was available.
Out of curiosity, what's the 3rd Opium War? I've never heard that one before.

Chris
thanks for your interest ..I think the general impression
of the Opium Wars in their entirety was a large naval
action where the Brits blew the granny out of forts and
towns when in fact most of the action took place on land.
the Third Opium War was really "unfinished business" on
the part of the Brits from our repulse at the end of that war
at the Taku forts
in 1860 we returned with French troops against some stoic
and brave resistance form Manchu/imperial troops........

Ah, see, over here, the whole Arrow War up to and including the sack of the Summer Palace is commonly and pretty much exclusively referred to as the second Opium War (for a total of two wars, one around 1840 and the second intermeshing with the Taiping).
Nomenclaturic nitpicking aside, I am looking forward to more. The EVA seems to be an interesting option for skirmish gaming, although I might go for some non-military like opium traders vs pirates vs the authorities.

You might as well just send me the bill already

indeed Chris I guess it doesn't really matter....its only my take
and a few authers...so the third ends up as the Franco-British expedition of 1860,,,,,,,,
The EVA and ETA side of things is fascinating with a splendid mix of
characters,,,,,,,,,,,,,just bought some books on the pirates circa that era
now that's something else......

Very nice.
I have already a big collection of FOUNDRY manchu and taiping miniatures but your miniatures will be some nice additions to my armies. The main drawback of the FOUNDRY range, in my opinion, was the lack of Brave figures. At the end, of the war, Braves armies were the main imperial fighting forces. Do you plan to produce Brave figures in your range, Ged ? :)
-
Ged, just spotted these and they look really great and I wish you success on the new range. One question, given I have loads of the Foundry Chinese, how do these compare size-wise to your new offerings??? I would hate to have to start over again. I know most 28mm figs these days are more like 32-34mm, but I have hope. A comparison pic would be most welcomed. If your range fits in well with what I have I can actually finish off a lot of units!

Ged,
Unfortunately I don't know a lot about him. He died in Toronto and was buried there 4th December, 1867. He was from Bournemouth originally and there is a memorial stone in the churchyard at Kinson where most of the information came from. Text of the inscription below as it is difficult to read from the stone. I know his movements in India and China from following the movement of the 6/14. They sailed from Calcutta to Hong Kong on the troop ship Merchantman and arrived on 23rd April 1860. On 16th May they moved to Talienwan Bay and disembarked at Odin Bay. On 21st July they sailed to Pei-tang and landed on 1st August. I believe they were in action at the Taku Forts from 20th August until the 23rd August but I have no idea what type of gun John Phillips was part of the crew of. On the 12th September I think they moved to Peking and the 6/14 were there at the surrender on on 13th October. After the surrender the battalion went back to Shanghai and then returned to India.

I like how the range is developing, and will probably order some in due course. Wow! Terrible instruments of destruction :o

Not sure....like many chinese weapons of the period they were destined to impress the ennemy by a lot of flash and noise. But they are compulsory in a imperial army. The multiple firing tiger gun is attested in a battle against the allies during the march to Beijing. I'm happy to have it soon in miniature :-*

Are there any major uniform differences between Manchu and green banner troops? Such as headwear as I cannot find any info online.
-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Qing_dynasty#Green_Standard_Army
-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Qing_dynasty#Green_Standard_Army
Unfortunately that article has nothing about the uniforms they wore, I'"m tring to find out if there where any major uniform differences between the manchu banners and the han ones.
-
The main difference was about the headdress. For more info, the Osprey books about China and the Taiping rebellion are a goldmine of informations. If you want to delve further into the period, the Foundry book about Chinese armies is compulsory ;)

thanks Siaba for stepping in ;)
