Welcome to the Alliance of the Big Battalions Artistry Ladies and Gentlemen!
Well, the 11th season of the Lead Painters’ League has just ended, so it is a fine opportunity to start a new painting Club!
The idea of the painting clubs is for LAF members to populate a club with 100 newly painted miniatures, one miniature at a time, following the theme in question.
It’s an informal, collaborative project.
The scope for this "Grand Alliance" includes the ‘historical’ wargaming period known as the "Horse and Musket" period. In this case it includes the regimental warfare in the 18th and 19th century. So anything from the War of the Spanish Succession, the Great Northern War, Seven Years War, the Napoleonic wars, the American Civil War and the likes.
Note that the small scale Actions of the C18th (the French and Indian War for example) belongs to the ‘Pikes, Muskets and Flouncy Shirts’ board, not here, as well as the colonial stuff for the 18th&19th Century. The But it’s a fine distinction, so we won’t be too picky.
There are some simple rules:
- Any LAF member can take part.
- You take part by posting in this thread, a picture of a single newly painted miniature that fits the theme.
- You can only post one entry within a 24-hour period.
- You can contribute as many miniatures as you like while the painting club is running. But you can’t post more than one per day.
- The subject of your picture must be a single, fully painted and based miniature.
- It can be whatever scale you like up to 40mm.
- It can be a figure on foot, a mounted figure, or a piece of equipment – a cannon, for instance.
- You can picture your miniature on its own, or in a scenic setting.
- The picture can be a single shot of the miniature, or a composite of different views.
- Photoshop manipulation of the image (except for colour / brightness / contrast correction) isn’t allowed.
- Your picture should be a maximum size of 1000px x 1000px
- The miniature should be newly-painted for the club and not have been previously shown here or elsewhere on the internet.
If participants submit old stuff, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
If you submit more than one miniature in any one day, or multiple miniatures within a picture, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
You can upload the image using the LAF attachment function, or upload it to an image hosting service and link to here.
When you post a picture, please check the number of the entry before yours, and then number your entry accordingly. So, if for instance, the last entry was entry #037, your entry becomes #038.
Please give your picture/figure a title or name and state the manufacturer and / or sculptor if known.
The club will stay open until 100 contributions have been posted. Then the club is complete.
When you post a picture, you become a member of the club and may add this handsome painting club badge - designed by Mad Doc Morris- to your forum signature line:
To include this badge to your signature please use this code:

No.3 Studio Miniatures 28mm European officer 1st Afghan War,with added greenstuffed blanket.
Hope it fits the category, will remove if mods feel it's too Colonial.
Cheers
Keith
-
It is my fault, if it is a fault at all :) it is very colonial, but I like the model, the conversion and especially the paintjob. So please leave him here, it is a thin line in some cases.
-
Phew ! Thanks :)
My next entry will sit neatly within the parameters of this club :)
Cheers

No.4
28mm Perry ACW Rhode Island Militia.

Nice one Romark!! And definatly not colonial :)

Nice entries so far, gents, and another fine club to join soon ... Although I couldn't find it in your listing, Jan, I'm pretty sure the American Revolutionary Wars (or AWI) would fit in here, right? :)

Very nice entries so far, I will have to get painting.

:?
Sigh. I think I have nothing that fits this category. The only way I could get close would be figures from Warhammer (fantasy) that resemble the historical period, but those look more 16th century [?]
I could paint a Cannon [maybe?] I dunno if those would look out of place on their own without the crew (who might look kinda renaissance / landsnhectish).
Wait! I do have some 1:900 (I think) fighting sail models unbuilt. I think that's 2mm scale.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
with all these fascinating posts so far I also want to make my contribution to this painting club:
This gentleman is an officer of the Virginia militia serving with the ill fated Monongahela-campaign in 1755. After his escape he settled in a frontier fur post, now leading the regional militia angainst French an Indian attacks.
This is one of the superb minis of Galloping Major, a very nice one!
Cheers Hannibal

Very nice submissions, but are the numbers incorrect ?
-
Very nice submissions, but are the numbers incorrect ?
They were but I corrected it. I think vcina's 10mm stuff caused the confusion. Although it is perfectly fine for me that he shows his regiments, his Miniatures do not qualify for the Alliance, because they are not single figures. Vcina correctly did not number his pictures, so 6 entries is the current status.
-
Sorry if I messed things up. Was not my intention.

#007 AWI Butler's Rangers Officer
Figure is by Front Rank and was a joy to paint
-
Nice entries. :)
-
Really nice entries Mad Lord and wolfkarl :-* Butlers Rangers are my favorite unit in the Revolution and you have done them proud!
LB
-
Very nice Start!
Wouldn't it be fitting for this period to also allow command stands as single figured, i.e. a general accompanied by some staff figures?
-
#008 AWI Militia, Perry Miniatures
-
Delightful :-*
-
@Lt. Hazel Thank you for the compliment :). Hopefully I will be able to finish another miniature before this painting club ends.
And of course there are some very nice new entries!!!
Cheers Hannibal
-
A well painted miniature and the terrain looks very nice too Utgaard!
-
Thank you very much - there are really beautiful figures in this thread :)
-
A sort of wistful scene. A little melancholy, perhaps. I know he's looking down because he's loading his gun, but it seems then he sees the flowers and is distracted, thinking of his love back home. The whole has an aura of sadness and longing about it. I love it! :)
Another song from another war, but it puts me in mind of...
"Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein..."
(Maybe I am overthinking it, mind.) lol
-
Delightful entries all round.
-
Wow Plynkes - thank you very much :)
-
Just finished painting up the last of my Maximillian figures. Need to get a couple of picture taken.

One of my favourite periods...
Nice one Helen.

Thanks Aly for your kind words. Interesting period and quite colourful in uniforms.
-
Dang, I almost missed this... now, I know I have a 28mm French Rev. Infantryman from Eureka somewhere, but no idea about its actual location, so I hope Sharpe and his Chosen Men arrive from Brigade Games in a timely manner... (technically speaking, I could just break out some of the 1/72 plastic stuff I have sitting unpainted on sprues in boxes in the garage, and I still may do so, just to get started, although I don't really feel like doing single minis in that scale).
Nice variation in theme and scales so far, btw!

Interesting period and quite colourful in uniforms.

All the best. Aly

This is the BIG BATTALIONS Painting club, so ..., well, I won't paint a battalion, but I decided to paint some more figures for my 11th Virginia Regt. I had started some time ago. I did five figures during the last days, all in hunting shirts as I want to get the complete regiment in hunting shirts (with some colour variations ...). All Perry miniatures, and kind of speed painted (at least for me 8)):

Hello,
my meager contribution to this painting club, as it seems this is the only miniature I own that fits the description:
I am not in any way an expert on Napoleonic uniforms, so I took inspiration for the uniform colours from Feraud, Harvey Keitels character in The Duellists. Please accept my apologies for any mis-stepping viz actual history. I don't even know if that gun he is wielding is historically accurate or some sort of steampunky anachronism.
I got this miniature from a lot I purchased or traded for on this very forum some months ago. If anybody knows what it is and or who made it, I would be grateful for the info.
Painted today. The hightlights look much softer when not under the harsh lights of the cameras.
Thanks to Kommando_J below I got the pointer I needed to hunt down and identify this mini. It is in fact a miniature named “Wellyn Shaftesbury with pistol” from Eurekas “Pax Limpopo” range. And a good representation of Flashman. Since Flashman was active in and around the American Civil War, I will count this as counting :D
-
A not flashman from eurekas victorian range.

Great additions to our Grand Alliance! Helen, a very interesting topic you chose. I do know nothing about the Hungarian Uprising but will listen to the podcast Aly recommended. And Admiral I am once again surprised that your painting makes ordinary Rank-and-File troopers look kinda special.
-
Some Club you're running here, Hazel. Nice entries. Before this one closes I hope I'll be able to paint something too.
-
Thank you Lt. Hazel. Geoff Coe's esoteric periods piqued my interest in looking into this period in particular.
All the best.

Beautiful entrys!!!!
When this painting league came up i was inspired to finaly paint again after a break.
Unfortunatly i was never much into historical gaming. lol
Also wouldnt start a complete new period...

Loving that marine, Cap. He's gorgeous.
He appears, though, to have found a small grassy islet from which to snipe at the Dons and the Froggies. Not a part of the story of the battle I'm familiar with! Either that or they've let the deck of the Saucy Temeraire get in one hell of a state, such as would give any bosun the conniptions. lol
-
lol
I knew someone would say that.
He is, in fact, shooting from the small on-board vegetable garden on HMS Victory.
(Not many people know about the Royal Navy's early efforts to combat scurvy by siting small raised beds growing salad vegetables just above the poop deck on all first rate ships of the line... 8))

Surely, positioning of the vegetable garden below the poop deck would facilitate more efficient fertilisation...... :D

Hurray. Another marine. Nice job on a great figure :)
(I think he's by Brigade Games rather than Warlord Games though - at least that's where mine came from. Brigade picked up the ex-Victrix metals when they decided to go plastic only).
-
I don't generally base individual figures (even my staff figures are in vignettes). So this is a Dixon Albanian infantry man from their Ottoman range. I'm currently trying to work out whether to use this, limited, range of figures or another as yet undetermined manufacturer. They are small by current standards but lovely all the same.

Thanks for the encouragement, Helen.
These guys took a lot longer to paint than I would have liked. I rather fear I have made a rod for my own back choosing an army with so much white.
Just need to work out how to reduced the size of the photos I load - is there a way to do this on the site or should I be jiggering about with the original image?

#39 French Officer, War of the Spanish Succession (Front Rank Miniatures)

Blimey, I better get my sh*t together and start work on one of the recently received chosen men. lol
Wonderful subject diversity so far, and nice to see more converted/kitbashed models than usual! :)
No kidding! I just have to find something suitable in my collection...where did I put General Custer?
-
Hope you don't mind a proxy entry, there is a precedent already for them with LAF painting clubs. This is the LAF debut of my nephew and long-time gaming partner, whose internet nom de guerre is Sickly Eldritch. He was keen to take part, but does not have a LAF membership, so is using mine...

Once again, some lovely additions.

That is an amazing grey horse!!

Some good new entries, but Washington and that horse. :o

Really nice additions and I am surprised by the variety of uniforms and miniatures. And yes, Washington is very lucky to own a fine horse like this!

That's a smashing piece of work, Michael.
That Neapolitan fellow is great, too. What an expressive face. He looks like something drawn by Herge.

Wonderfull entries. :-* :-* :-*

Lieutenant, 95th Rifles

Instead of a sabre he carries a heavy cavalry sword (Sharpe!)
He's a plastic conversion using Perry parts. IIRC, I used ACW gunner legs, a Light Dragoon body and various bits from the British line infantry set. The pistol is a cut down musket.

I understand that you can a few, I'm sorry. If you violate the rules, then delete the message. I just showed it, I grabbed it, liked it myself ... :)

Yep. Only single based and one miniature per day. But Dez attached no number, so for me he is just showing cool miniatures. If he wants the badge he will have to add a single miniature.

The prince-bishopric of Paderborn provided troops for every major conflict of the 17th and 18th century. They were notoriously under-equipped, and old-fashioned gear may therefore have prevailed well into the 1700s.

Lovely brushwork from very talented miniature painters.

Cherrybottoms and all :)
I am still a it confused about that. I read what I could find about the Cherry Bums, and if the color of their breeches really were that dark cherry pink of which one has heard. In most descriptions I could find it says they are "crimson" which to me, is a rich red, verging towards burgundy.

That is lovely image, Dylan. Paintjob, setting and photograph... all of it. I did not know you have an interest in ACW?

It's actually the 19th Century conflict that I'm most interested in. But I have never really had any inclination to make games out of it. Something about painting all that blue and grey I suppose. My feeble attention span probably balked at the monotony of it.
But I thought the painting club was a good way to try out something new. Makes a change from the constant stream of African tribesmen around here. Sometimes it feels like those are the only figures I ever paint. Bought that pack of dismounted cavalry ages ago, back when I thought the LPL and I were a good match. They've been sitting around sulking ever since.

It's a conflict I shun, eventhough I have a relative who was a colonel @ Richmond for the South (probably promoted above his competence due to the lack of officers at the end of the war).
My scepsism has something to do with my time in the states, where the gamers who put on *huge* spreads at the gaming conventions, the tables groaning under he weight of painted leads. The same persons often were quite humorless, lacking perspective on their hobby and quite prone to get into a verybal figt over some perception of historical interpretation. Much more so than the napoleonic gamers. I am of course generalizing, but what the hell, you know I am right. ;)

I have a relative who was an officer in the Corps d'Afrique (or so I'm told). Kinda like that Ferris Bueller fellow! One day we'll have to get together, dress up and do a re-enactment. We can build sand forts and hurl horse dung and insults at each other. It's what our ancestors would want.

Great figure, lovely paintwork, and such a simple but effective set up Dylan :-*
Dez - your cowboy, and Anton's, are very well done, but they are not 'Age of the Big Battalions' - more Old West. We have already had an Old West Painting Club some time ago :(
I think this is down to a slight misunderstanding on language. (I have to say that your English is very good compared to my Ukrainian - I can't speak any Ukrainian at all! :))
The Age of the Big Battalions genre is all about organised warfare in the age of horse and musket, from the very start of the 1700's through to the end of the 1800s. But not including specific genres within that time period which are catered for elsewhere - like Colonial or Old West.
It is a difficult concept to understand when English is a foreign language to you, I really appreciate. :)
Anyway, I'm sure your very nice pictures can remain here in the club, but the board moderator, Lt Hazel, may decide that they don't count towards the target of 100 'Big Battalion' miniatures.
Hope that makes sense.
-
They could be Civil War Bushwhackers, I guess. :)
-
I did think the first one could pass as a Johnny Reb jayhawker...
The second one looks an awful lot like a cowboy though ;)

Dez please post your beautiful miniatures on the Old West Board where they belong to.

The AWI figure is very nice indeed! :)

I’ve currently got a bunch of Napoleonics on the painting table, but they are all ineligible due to the single figure, fully based conditions set out here.
This being the age of big battalions all my figures are on multiple bases- even commanders and skirmishers.
I guess I have a different take on it, and my own personal view is that for this era- and while readily acknowledging that the painting on display in this thread is first-rate- it’s the opportunity of seeing peoples’ finished units, that give me the most pleasure, and which motivates me to push ahead with a project where mass production counts.
I’ve always been able to paint up a very decent single miniature, but at the cost of productivity when it comes to getting my battalions finished.
Enjoying this thread, though!

We have other competitions for units, the Lead Painters league. The club projects were started to focus as a challange to try ones best on one-offs in the various periods represented in he Forum.

Got a couple in mind I'd like to add, but it's a bit chilly in the painting room at the minute. It's warmer here by the computer. :D

Ahh Gentlemen,
Alas I have been away for far too long! The LAF is always an inspiration and a curse as it tends to get me started in too many projects! This club however is fitting into a current project nicely! I had been talking with a wargaming buddy about painting his Swedish 30 years’ war army but had been putting it off. This "Big Battalion" club challenge has given me the finial push to get them done! I will post some of the figures for you all to see. (since these are not painted for the “club” exclusively perhaps they violate the rules? ??? :o Although I don’t think that many of the miniatures painted for the clubs are not part of another project…lol! ;))
The colors were a bit of a challenge as yellow is for me always a tough color to make look right and the Swedish “Yellow” took time to get right, well as far as my feeling of “right” goes! Hope you enjoy the figure and I will post a few others as they are finished if the club is still running.
Figures are from the “ASSAULT GROUP” line and are very well sculpted, proportioned, and posed! That's one of the reasons I wanted to paint them and the fact that this period was one I had yet to do anything for. Most of the figures I paint will also be modified a bit. I do it to create even more diversity in the army, make my armies unique, and just because I enjoy it! This one had the arm slightly re-positioned and the horse had all 4 feet on the ground. A small bit of cutting, bending, and filling with kneadite (green stuff) gave a much more dynamic feel. The paint is Vallejo with a charcoal black automotive primer used in prep. 8)

I don't know if that would rule it out, but the fact that it's from the Thirty Years War ought to, as officially that comes under the bailiwick of the board above this one.
Nicely done, though, nicely done.

Thanks Plynkes, well they come under the "Horse and Musket" and the "Great Northern War" as far as I see? according to the posting rules...lol. I do not game the period and these will be used with the rules Donnybrook. The eventual owner said this style really covers a wide period for the Swedes. If these don't cut it I guess I toss up some Napoleonic's I've just done! lol

Yes, I like the Cacadore officer . The colours go together surprisingly well , brown , red , light blue and even the green tuft , a good choice. Only 25 to go ......

Cool! I thought this had died on its feet. Good to see it hasn't quite. Very nice.
I had planned another couple of entries, but got swept up in the LPL instead. If there are still places to fill after the LPL is done I shall probably post a couple more.
-
I am also struggling to get an entry in - keeps getting postponed by other projects, but now I have some Song of Drums and Shakos and Black Powder in the pipeline, so I expect to get something done, at last... The first one may be some 1:72 plastic, though...
-
Great to see this is still going with great entries

#81, Gérard, Trooper of the 1er Hussards
Gérard likes ale, wenches, and fine champagne, enemy steel not so much...
Italeri 1:72
The sheepskin has a wrong shape, yes, I know.
I do not shade/hightlight in this scale, never have, as I only paint them as parts of units that have to be easily recognizable from afar on the table.
-
Some worthy additions.

#82 Súil a Grá
Perry Miniatures, 28mm
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/33/1034-030618101905.jpeg)
Can't believe I started painting this model almost a year ago and particularly for this club. :o
It's testimony to both my lacking mojo and my ever-growing disaffection with the Perry's metal minis. While I love this model's idea, its execution is rather crude. Repainted it several times, and still not happy. Yet, it's a mere marker for gaming purposes (a magnetic 'dial' of sorts will be added), so I called it a day.
-
Looks fine to me! :)
-
I'd be pretty happy if my "not happy with it" cast-offs looked like that. :)

Both the grenadier and standard bearer look terrific!

And sorry for not replying on this thread earlier – there's some real eyecandy on show. Kudos to all!

Cheers all, much appreciated! :)
So this thread will come to an end eventually ... :o
Perhaps the topic doesn't lend itself to individual figures, especially with FIW outsourced to Pike & Shot. On the other hand, it's a chance for people like me who paint at glacial speed to enter one or two figures before it's all over.
As I love to see other people's work and don't want to bore you all to death with just more of the same, I'm holding fire now.

I second that - the Painting Clubs never were about speed, and we don't need another one starting every month; there is plenty of other stuff to gawk at on the forum, so just let it finish in its own time!
I shall probably start painting a rifleman one of the next days, and see if I can get him done in time for this!

Lovely work on that lancer, and enjoyed reading your blog on them. They look a lot better than I thought they would, great work! :)

I like the Line Lancer , the trotting horses are very effective. Like Jambo I did,nt expect much from the Warlord kit , but these have turned out very well .

Some lovely entries since last I looked. Well done all.
I don't mind the slow build on this one. Too much rushing about in RL. :)

I concur with enjoying the 'slow burn' aspect of this club. I purchased this chap when I ordered a few other bits and bobs from Gringo40s and to see if I could finish him before the club ceased. Luckily I had a bit of time to push the brush about toady and got him done.
-
Lovely work on the latest entry.
Best regards,

That was a lot of fun. Really enjoyed participating and seeing the wonderful entries.
-
This was a fun one! Lovely work everyone!
-
Agreed, lots of nice stuff!!! :-*
I feel sorry that I did not get anything but my 1/72 hussar painted, but this summer keeps having temperatures around 30 centigrades, and with almost no winds at the same time, the study/office/hobby room gets too darn hot, so I keep away from it when not starting prints on my recently purchased 3D-printer.
Well, let's see what the next PC is going to be!
-
Congrats everybody. I looked and looked for anything that would fit this theme and I just had never collected so much as a stray figure for the period. (Closest I had was a witch hunter figure ..GW.. from one of their games, the Tech Level was about right, but it didn’t seem proper.)
-
So many great looking paint jobs on here :-*
