I've become inspired into modelling action by Blood & Plunder - which looks to be the age of sail ruleset I've always wished for.
I was so inspired, that I have been jolted out of my fugue state and actually done some scrathbuilding!
This is the first piece for a demo table I intend to use at a local con.

I've done a short tutorial with more pictures for those interested on the blog http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com.au/2017/07/blood-plunder-port-gun-battery.html
Blood & Plunder's current Kickstarter is well worth a look. It has a few more days to run and can be checked out here:

Very nice Frank, a lot complicated build than it first looks. The end result is excellent. :-*
Looking forward to seeing more of the project. ;D
-
That's a very nice gun platform Frank. Great work 8)
-
Very impressive!
-
A really nice piece of terrain. Also the instructions on your blog were really helpful. I have to get me one of those cake stencils. :D
-
Stunning work.
I have also failed to get a game of B&P played despite really liking it from a read through. This sort of stuff is very inspiring !
-
Thanks for the kind words gents. :)
Blood & Plunder is really a very nice set of rules, I can't praise it higher. The ships are amazing and the minis ain't too shabby too.
A really nice piece of terrain. Also the instructions on your blog were really helpful. I have to get me one of those cake stencils. :D
It is easy enough to just draw the bricks by hand too, but if u want a uniform look the stencil is just too easy. It was bought on eBay and is actually called a cake embosser.
-
Excellent battery.
Look forward to seeing what you build next.
It is always a treat.

I moved on to the port wall and gibbet.

Very well done, looks great ;D
-
Fantastic job! Love the port battery! Can't wait to see more!
-
Cracking start Frank, looking forward to seeing the rest :)
Excellent to see you back at it :D
cheers
James

The stonework looks great, that cake embosser thing is a fantastic find.
Might have to rummage through the local craft store's baking section sometime soon to see what I can unearth!
The buildings in the far background in that last photo look good, got any better photos of them?
-
Thanks all, nice to see some friendly faces (avatars) here. :)

I got mine through eBay, but have seen them in shops too. They come in all kinds of shapes including cobblestones. Some shapes can be a little large though.

Thanks, there are some closer pics http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/houses-for-18th-century-horror.html
I'm not sure if I'm using them now because I think I want a distinctively looking Spanish town, but is a shame since I have them already. :?

Those are great buildings (even of they are not exactly Caribbean looking :D).
-
Your burgeoning port town is lovely.
I am literally sitting here right now plotting how I could attempt to land there, take the emplacement, and sack the town!
Won't be easy.
-
Thanks for the gibbet tutorial. I will have to try making that as I was trying to figure out what to use. Your town, and other items for your port look fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Hitman

Sail in, looking like a merchantman, sneak out at night and take the bastion while your piratical friends sail in to reinforce you. lol
-
Henry Morgan, is that you?
-
So pleased to see you back at what you do best, building and presenting LAF worthy eye candy. ;D
Keep it coming! :)
-
Crikey, I can remember reading your stuff on Sharp Practice in India and being very inspired. Great to see you back in the saddle and looking forward to more :)

Too kind Nick - it has been too long mate - but this place still feels like home :)

Thanks Jeff, alas I haven't visited Indostan (http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com.au/search/label/indostan) in (oh my God!!!) three years! :o
-
Beautiful work on this, truly inspiring. Now to get a cake embosser...
-
Very well done Frank. :-* :-*
Welcome back.
Keep it coming. :)
-
Sirrah,
While I agree your buildings don't look 'Spanish' I disagree that they don't look Caribbean. I could see something like that in Curacao or some other places, wherever there is Dutch or French influence.
And you are reminding me of my own little project, a pentagonal star fort with a lower elevation substantial outwork in significant disrepair (courtesy of a couple of damaged walls) - an adaptation project of Stone Mountains 15 mm fort. I figure to put the main fort atop a modest cliff and the outwork abutting close by and closer to the sea. The outwork idea came from replacing the stock bastions with the optional Spanish tower bastions, need to order another gate piece before much progress, however. Or maybe I'll get brave and scratch that portion of the project! :o
And, as others say, nice work. I shall be watching for further inspiration.
-
Thanks all :)
Very well done Frank. :-* :-*
Welcome back.
Keep it coming. :)
Thanks Rui, it is nice to be doing some modelling again. :)

Thanks for that Fifteens, was thinking that myself, although this rendition of Blood & Plunder is set in the mid to late 17th century, I do wonder if Curacao would have been established?
-
Hmm, made me wonder, so I checked. Copy and paste from Wikipedia re: Netherlands colony establishments in the New World:
Sint Maarten in 1618
Bonaire in 1634
Curaçao in 1634
Sint Eustatius in 1636
Aruba in 1637
Saba in 1640
Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke before 1640
Happy to help - but next batch of research may involve a dispatch of Guilders in my direction. :D

Well there you go - thanks. And as for the Guilders, sure I'll pay ya, but I'll only be robbing them back. :)
-
Furt, I say we settle this like gentlemen wargamers. My fleet and pirates meet up with your fleet and pirates across a gaming table. Now, I only have 17 ships and a few small schooners and only about 1500 painted armed folk in my piratical collection. That includes rather a number of distracting distaff lassess. Where shall that lot meet up with yours?
:o

That's top drawer Mate ;D
I especially like the deck colour :)
-
Me loves sloop! :-* :-* :-*
-
lovelly work Frank. :-* :-*
-
That's fantastic. I like the look of their ships a lot. Quite tempted to buy a couple myself. The rigging looks so fiddly though, probably beyond my meagre capabilities :( looks fantastic when done though!
-
Thanks for all the comments guys - the ships are really nice pieces to work with.
That's top drawer Mate ;D

Thanks mate - it's all Seraphim Sepia magic - no skill required!

The rigging was fiddly but not overly difficult. Firelock provide you with templates for the sails and some instructions for the rigging. They even give you the black cord.

Coming together nicely. ;D

-
Thanks gents. :)
-
very well executed project
-
It looks magnificent!
I dont have any ships yet but I might start on some terrain soon and I'm worried about making my docks too high or low. How many inches or cm are the railing of a B&P Sloop above the waterline?
-
Depends.
Is the tide in, or out ?
I personally think it looks best if the dockside is a little bit higher than the deck, but you could have it the other way.
-

The sloop's gunwale is on average 4cm high, the brig roughly 4.5cm and the port wall is about 5cm high. I wouldn't worry too much about it, a gangplank would fix any indiscretions.
-
Thanks for the measurements Furt :)
-
No problems Munindk :)
-
I had been thinking about re-working some of my pirate boards and this has given me some inspiration. Thanks for the tutorials and keep up the good work.
-
Frank, hello sir! Nice to see you back on the scratch building wagon, with wind in your sails from a new ruleset.
What can you displaying at mate?
Cheers
Matt
-
I agree with everyone else here - lovely beginnings and great to see you at it again.
-
Thanks gents for the kind words :)
Frank, hello sir! Nice to see you back on the scratch building wagon, with wind in your sails from a new ruleset.
What can you displaying at mate?
And good to hear from you too Matt. I'll be showing this at MOAB on both the Saturday and Sunday, with Sven (he played your apocalypse game years back with his son). A mate will also run Sharp Practice 2 and Sven will do Zombicide Black Plague on the Sunday. Hopefully we'll see you there?
-
My 1:1 hobby project just turned 15 months, I'm a pretty stoked dad.
With an advertisement like that Frank I'll need to rustle up a visit at Moab for sure.
Cheers
Matt

I was assuming that particular hobby project was hogging your time. So many little details to take care of. ;)
Hope to see you there anyway mate.

This is a warehouse I've been working on for a while.

Very nice. Are you planing to add shutters to the windows? I ask because if you do, please tell us how you made them, I want to try something similar.
-
Oooh! Very good job! :-*
(you're giving inspiration)
-
Ooooh yes, thats rather nice ;D
-
Gorgeous
-
Thanks all. :)

I was thinking myself has.been it could do with some shutters. I may just do that.
-
That is a great building. Just the right sort of thing to have as an objective. I second the idea of some shutters and look forward to seeing how you did the roof.
-
...and look forward to seeing how you did the roof.
Yes! Yes! :-*
-
I've had a few requests in other places for what I used for the roof of the warehouse, so for completeness I put a link here https://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com.au/2017/08/cheap-and-eay-pantile-roof-tutorial.html

Thats pretty damned effective for pantiling ;D
-
Brilliant idea. I've just ordered some off Ebay. :D
-
I agree with Hu Rhu and Malamute: clever and well done.
-
Many thanks for the tutorial! Well done!
-
Thanks guys - truly didn't think anyone around here might "learn" something, but glad some of you could find use.
And as has.been suggested above I have added shutters to the warehouse, that has broken up the walls nicely. The shutters are from https://warbases.co.uk/
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PbHBii03Usc/WZtzWZAoHqI/AAAAAAAADH4/yBkSEfNnpjwSnuzJFfaEYMkRgfwMWUy5ACLcBGAs/s1600/DSCN4456.JPG)

-
they look great - what size are the shutters?
-
they look great - what size are the shutters?
They are the only shutter Warbases sell (I think) but they are 10mm by 22mm.
-
They finish it off very nicely. It looks excellent :-* ;D
More buildings now please! lol
-
Very well done Frank. :-* :-*
-
Excellent building, I think the shutters add a lot to it.
I have used the Warbases ones in the past and if I could offer a small suggestion for improvement, that is to add a couple of cross braces to the shutters which adds a little 3D to what are otherwise flat bits of wood.
Otherwise a great piece of terrain and one I will be copying in future.
-
Even better with the shutters
-
Your latest building looks good. As others have said the shutters add to it by breaking up the large surface of walls.
Another way you could do shutters is with large cable ties, cut to the right size. They give a good louvered look. I have seen it done and it looks effective, but I've not tried it yet myself so can't show a picture - sorry
-
I like it even better with the shutters. Though The anarchist in wants to close one or two of them .
I am annoyed with myself, was at their stall yesterday (Partizan) even bought stuff, but missed the shutters!
-
Great project and terrific execution: I'll stay tuned for more! :o
-
Brilliant idea. I've just ordered some off Ebay. :D
Where did you find it on ebay? I can only seem to find the nobbely kind.
Oh. And it is an amazing build. I have been following it in the shadows since day one but only not gotten around to comment.
-
Respect the vision & skills I see in your thread. Myself struggling with similarly 'straightforward' and 'simple' modifications and additions to ready-made kits, and it's not at all 'straightforward' and 'simple', as I thought it would be. Great to see your splendid success. It is motivating.
-
I like the warehouse!
-
Thank you everyone for the very kind words of encouragement.
It wasn't that long ago that I apprehensively asked Malamute about his amazing adobe builds and Nick was so forth coming and helpful, that I have felt ever since that anything I can add to this wonderful forum is an honor. :)
Where did you find it on ebay? I can only seem to find the nobbely kind.
Sappy, nostalgic memory out of the way - the material, ah yes. In Australia I can find it everywhere - dollar stores, super markets, hardware stores, street corners and dive bars.
I located it, for international punters, at Ali Express, being called Ribben-Pattern-EVA-Shelf-Liners-Anti-slip-Refrigerator-Pads-Anti-oil-Cabinet-Drawer-Coaster-1-Pack. Hope this helps.

Shucks! Goes red with embarassment ;) lol
Frank, I think this latest build of yours far outshines me efforts in adobe. I think you have seriously upped the bar now ;D

I know. I just wanted to find a european dealer. I was asking to Hu Rhu where he found it on Ebay.
But I think I found it myself now.

mate, that looks wonderful!!!! I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh. I really like the stairs. 8) 8)

So in the end I pretty much ran out of time to document the rest of my builds here, because the deadlines got the better of me.
I did manage to finish the table on time and got it to the local con where it was a great success and drew hopefully a lot of attention for Firelock Games and Blood & Plunder.
So here are some pics of the finished table and there are more on the blog http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com.au/2017/10/blood-plunder-moab-2017.html

A nicer den of scum and iniquity it would be harder to find! :)
-
Fantastic table! You did a really great job!!! many congrats!
-
Wonderfull table Frank. :-* :-*
The buildings are very good.
I may take some ideas. :)
Many of your buildings are generic enough to use in several historical periods.
-
Very nice work there - definitely shows the care you took to put it all together.
-
Thanks all. :)
Many of your buildings are generic enough to use in several historical periods.
Yes Rui - I pride myself on trying to use my terrain and figures for as many games as possible. These buildings will double for Sharp Practice in the Peninsular Wars.
The buildings were clever MDF blanks made by https://www.facebook.com/TheRooknRaven/ who are just about to launch these publicly. They have a series of cutout for different doors and window types that allow you to make an endless array of different building types.
-
The table looks fantastic Mate. I'd love to fly over for a game on it. ;D lol
-
great table . can you post a link for the cake stencil you used for the stonework on the harbour walls please
-
That is a fantastic table. Thanks for sharing the tutorials and the finished article.
-
Beautiful stuff to do a table proud! What thickness of blue foam did you use for the walls?
-
Amazing looking port. I have would love to build a table like this but I get too easily distracted by too many new games.
-
Thanks again all.

Thanks Nick - one day mate, one day...

48 happy Blood and Plunder Port wannabe makers lol

Looking superb!
What did you use for the water?
Gathering thoughts on options now for an upcoming project.
-
What did you use for the water?
It is simply some heavy felt-like material with a thin sheet of plastic laid over the top.
To tell you the truth the water was an after thought having ran out of time and this is what I had on hand.
