Well not really. But since Photobucket has F***ed over all their users and my old thread I decided to start a new one as I am still working on this project.
The grand plan is to have a table and armies ready for the 800 year anniversary of the Battle of Lyndanisse June 15. 2019. So there is still some time to get stuff ready.
Firstly a great big photodump of what I have finished so far.
Baltic pagans

And all together
(http://i.imgur.com/0uEGh6q.jpg)
-
I also build a Motte & Bailey castle. As the battle takes place around a castle the danish crusaders was constructing.

And my partner in crime buildt a stack of boards that my Motte and Bailey fit together with. But despite using the same colours I completely failed to match his boards. But I think if we put enough troops, terrain and scatter on ther it is not to bad.

-
And today I finished another unit of pagans.
-
Glad you recovered this thread.
Keep it coming.
-
I love the terrain as much as the minis (maybe even more since that is what I am into right now :D).
-
Really, really nice stuff! Thanks for the inspiration.
-
Superb ! A chef d'oeuvre :-*
-
Like the castle!
-
Another new unit added to the army.

Busy busy.
Any of the new Scandinavians in there?
Erik
-
Well what can I say. Danish summer weather is not really suitable for anything else than staying inside and paint.
There are a few fireforge scandinavians in there.
-
Excellent paintjob and the fort is great!
Congrats for your project, I'll be following it as a source of inspiration!
-
Another unit ready to take the field.

Love the castle, infact love the whole thing :)

Here is a class photo of the army as it currently stand.

Really nice looking army. It also looks like you are quite far with them already!
-
Impressive looking army!
-
Very nice army
-
Really well done. Speed and output.
I admire your dedication!
-
Well worn looking army. Looks like it's seen some hefty actions! 8)
-
Thanks everyone. It certainly helps with the motivation.
I am still not done with this army. I have some ways to go yet. I have been a bit distracted by Landsknechts at the moment. But I am surely returning to this.
At some point I figure they will need a bit of noble cavalry as well.
-
This project is still very much alive. Even though it has been a year since my last post...
Yesterday we started playtesting a scenario for the battle of Lyndanisse 1219.
The Danish king Valdemar II is on a crusade in Estonia and is building a castle in Lyndanisse (present day Tallin) But he is attacked on all sides by the heathen Estonians. But as it looks most grim the heavens open and the Danish flag Dannebrog falls from heaven and grants the Danish army victory. - So the story goes.
We played Lions Rampant with a few tweaks four forces. Two Crusaders and two pagans. It was a very enjoyable game. And we have a few ideas to make it even better.
-
Excellent! I love what you have done. Way too stick with the project.
I have always found the Baltic Crusades fascinating.
-
Cool. I did'nt see you taking any photos, but then again it was an intense game with my mood going up and down acording to my position along the table.
I have made a new banner for Vitslav. I found a banner for the count of Rügen, which I thing is more appropriate for him.
Cheers
Erik
-
I only took two and this was the only one who turned out halfway decent.
But you might have missed it between all your crying and gnashing of teeth.
-
I have painted up some more units for the pagan army.

Fantastic looking game! I’d be very interested to learn what ideas for modifications to Lion Rampant you’re experimenting with since that’s the rule set I’m looking at for my own, old 15mm, Baltic armies that have been pining away on the shelf. Your terrain is amazing. It simply beckons to be played on.
Any recommendations for good books on the Baltic Crusades?

You have two with the same questions! Game setup figures and game, excellent! Keep up the good job! Cheers!
-
Ohh looks really great !
I love the dirty look.
-
Like the castle!
Me too! 8)
Though I do have a very large Grand Manner resin that only has three pieces of it painted up as of yet!
Did you draw up any plans before the build?
D
-
Thanks.
We played another game today. AAR to follow.
There was no plan when building the castle that is not how I do hobby.

One of my new years resolutions for 2019 is to overcome my aversion to painting horses. And I plan to do that with confrontational therapy by painting lots of horses.
And in stead of starting a whole new thread I will put my first efforts into this thread. As I figure that most of the infantry I have painted for Baltic Pagans can go as early medieval infantry. So without further ado - here is my first unit of knights.

Attaboy! :D
-
Excellent! :-*
I too have a horse aversion that I’m battling :D
-
I am glad I am not the only one.
I really don't know what it is with painting cavalry that is so off putting. Maybe it is just as simple as the fact that I have to paint two models in order to have one finished model.
But I must say that having an airbrush greatly speeds up the painting of the horses. For these ones I have not even picked out the bridle in a different colour. Just given it a bit of a drybrush. And I really should go over it once more. But it will have to do for now. Baby steps...
-
For me it’s that there is just so much mass to them that I’m tended to overhighlight so they look like zebras or underhighlight so they look like shadows :-[
-
Oh that is definitely an issue for me as well. But an airbrush really helps with that issue.
-
ABSOLUTELY stunning project. Hope you dont mind me saving the pictures of your castle for references. How do you store it by the way?
-
Not at All. Storage is a bit of a hassle. I have made plans for some custom shelves for it but not gotten around to actually make them yet.
-
Outstanding work Dr. Z. Now, who gets these fine knight I wonder? The fuzzy pagans or my splendid Danish force?
I can see you have promised an AAR earlier in this thread. It might be time for another go at our scenario so you can make a proper one.
Best of luck with your new year's resolution
Erik

I think these guys are destined to fight at Bornhøved or Foteviken.

Hi, nice group of riders.
If you like, here: http://mageknightkevin.blogspot.com/2011/11/tutorial-painting-horses-28mm.html (http://mageknightkevin.blogspot.com/2011/11/tutorial-painting-horses-28mm.html) is a nice tutorial on painting horses an easy way.
and here you find a lot of good pictures of realistic horse Color combinations:https://www.horse-genetics.com/horse-colors.html (https://www.horse-genetics.com/horse-colors.html)
Cheers
-
Ohh thanks for those links. They will be most helpfull.
-
Your horses look very good as does all the rest of the project! keep up the good work.
-
Work continues to overcome my aversion to paint horses.

-
Outstanding.
What company makes the figures?
-
They are plastic medieval knights from Conquest. Some of the chainmail detail is a little shallow but otherwise I really like them. I have mixed in a bit of Fireforge Templar bits.
-
Thank you sir!
-
Looking at the picture I realized I forgot to batter their shields. So her is take two.

Lovely work, really like the battered shields.

Loving this thread 👍👍👍
-
Amazing. You are putting out cavalry at record speed. How many boxes did you buy?
Impressive output - I echo Erik's comment and question.
-
Thanks. I bought two boxes of knights.
-
Great work! I like the battered shields as well! Excuse me that I have to ask, but who makes the baltic Pagans on Page 1 in the first two pictures?
Apart from that nice thread! I shall be following! :-* :D
-
They are all a mix of saxons, Vikings and crusaders from various manufacturers. Foundry, footsore, Gripping Beast, and Black Tree Design.
-
Ah, wonderful! Thank you, I'll give all of them a look see! ;)
-
It has been a slow painting weekend. So I have only managed to produce this one command base. It has dawned on me that the army has grown enough in size that I can actually use it to play Hail Ceasar. So here is the army general with his retainers.

Lots of lovely progress 8)

I managed to do another base of knights.

Splendid miniatures. :-* :-*

My army took to the field yesterday. In a close fought battle against Eriks army.
For most of the battle it looked like Eriks army would carry the day as his cavalry broke my right flank, but not without suffering heavy casualties themselves. And my own cavalry refused to move in the center.
But in the end they got themselves sorted and charged and broke the centerbrigade that left the free to about face and destroy the already heavily reduced enemy cavalry brigade.
Giving me a narrow victory snatched from the almost closed jaws of defeat.
-
The aniversary of the Battle of Lyndanisse is comming up and I thought we needed a bit better camp for the crusaders. So I did up these. They are from Mantics terraincrate.

Excellent pictures. Really enjoyed reading through this thread.
Are you still using Lion Rampant?
-
Yes. But with a few tweaks of our own.

Thanks. How big are the large tents in that camp set?

The footprint is just about 3x3”

Great thanks :)

Today was the 800 year anniversary of the Battle of Lyndanisse where The Danish king Valdemar II fought a big battle against the Pagan Estonians. And the myth is that Dannebrog the Danish flag fell from heaven as a sign that God granted had granted victory to the Danish crusaders.
We have been building up to this day for ages. And you might have read several reports of this battle already. But today is the real deal. We really feel that we have hit a very good balance in our scenario I don't think that the same army has won the game two times in a row.
First we start with an overview of the battlefield. King Valdemar II is in the crusaders camp by the beach but he has two units of levies in the castle while Prince Vitslav of Rugen is further inland at the back of the hill. The Pagan chieftans attack from two sides. The pagans get two points for every building they burn down points for looting and burning the crusader camp and the castle tower. And the crusaders gain one point for every unburnt building at the end of the game.
The game lasts four turns and I have made this turn marker to count the. When the flag hits the ground the game ends.
The game starts with Prince Vitslav making the opening moves. his army however ends up very spread out and scattered.
The pagans andvance as one block on the castle.
As they cross the river Valdemars Foot Yeomen move up to defend the walls.
Valdemar is forced to divide his forces to defend agains a small flanking force of pagan cavalry.
A massive block of pagan infanrty advances on the castle and due to some bad dice rolls Prince Vitslav is not able to slow them down.
The fight for the wall has started and the Yeomen are giving as good as they get and successfully defend the wall.
Prince Vitslavs forces have managed to close on the Pagans attacking the castle gate and even gotten a unit into the castle to reinforce the Yeomen fighting of the attackers on the other side of the castle.
Valdemars army is also starting to engage the Pagans attacking the walls from the flank.
Despite a valliant defence from the Yeomen the mass of pagan warriors starts to show and they flow over the walls.
The pagan flanking cavalry is fought to a standstill by the defenders. Their plan to loot and burn the Crusader camp seems to have failed.
Just as it looks like the crusaders were gaining the upper hand. Some sneaky pagan warriors manages to sneak up a set fire to one of the village buildings.
Prince Vitslav fails an activation roll and fails to stop another building from going up in flames.
The fight at the gate is intensifying and Vitslavs knights charge in to relieve the pressure on the gate. While the prave yeomen are still holding the courtyard.
The weight of numbers is really starting to show and even though the pagan warriors are fighting and dying for every inch gained. They still manage to set fire to a building inside the courtyard.
By this point the Pagans were ahead on scenario points and the only chance the Crusaders had of winning the game was to achieve some of their boasts. But sadly the failed. So the crusaders fell back on just killing as many pagans as possible. And more or less cleared the field outside af the castle. Here is an overview of the battlefield at the end of the game. Unfortunately it ended with a victory for the Pagans unlike 800 years ago where the Danes carried the field.

Nice AAR and thank you for a good game and good spirit even though you got whooped ;D
You forgot to mention though that while we were playing the red and white F16 Fighting Falcon flew over our house on a route all over the country to mark the anniversary.

What a great AAR, I really enjoyed that.

Same - the effort (building up to it) has been great. I even liked the turn marker.
You just didn't get the air support you needed. :P

5000 years from now some alien wargamers will allow that historical travesty to happen :D
-
Nice report and table setup! Thank you for sharing!
-
Nice stuff! I love the Black Tree figures.
-
I have really enjoyed following your thread. Very nice collection and good looking game!
-
I have painted up another unit for this army. The plan is to start adding units to make it a bit less Baltic pagan and more generic medieval Scandinavian. These minis are from Old Glory and a bit on the smallish side.
-
Look great, some battered old veterans in that unit! :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks.
Here is another new unit.
-
They really look battered, warlike and ready for another battle! Cheers!
-
Very charactorful miniatures. Battered but ready to battle on. Great stuff
-
I lined up the whole army. I is arranged in Hail Caesar formation. It is a bit difficult for photograph so manny miniatures at once but i tried.
The lot of it.
The heavy infantry made up of foot knights and mercenaries.
The knightly cavalry
(https://i.imgur.com/fo7tLjl.jpg)
The leding (conscripted peasants)
Having everything out all at once really brings home that I need to get in gear and paint up some crossbowmen. They are sorely lacking in the army.
-
It´s looking really nice, very inspiring.

Grand. I even like the Leding.

13th-century Danish civil wars here we come!! >:(
I didn't know you had so much ready. How about a decent map of Denmark post-1241 so we can do some serious campaigning.
they look great.
Cheers
Erik

Beautiful looking army!

I didn't know you had so much ready. How about a decent map of Denmark post-1241 so we can do some serious campaigning.
I quess it was inevitable. I was a bit surprised myself how much it actually was, when all put together. But I really do need more missile troops and perhaps some more cavalry.
You mean a map like this?
-
You need that map without colours and then you will need some shields with family Crests to show whom owns what, and bluetac to fasten them with. Then you´ll need some army markers to move around the strategic map. And of course a rule system, then you are ready to go.
-
Oh boy I have allowed this to slip all the way to page four! Must mean I am slacking..
But I have now completed the first unit of crossbowmen.
-
Nice paintjob!
Keep 'em coming!
-
Looking good. I really like that you have a consistent, plain and Dirty colour scheme on the rank and file. It makes the heraldic colours stand out with out taking over the unit. I hope you get what I mean otherwise I´ll try to explain it some other way.

Ohh... Im loving it!

Thanks everyone. It is nice to know that someone is actually following along with the very staccato pace of this thread.
'tis the season where most weekends are spent with drunken debauchery and overeating. So I don't expect much more getting done this side of Christmas.

Another unit of crossbowmen is ready to take the field.

Nice! :-*

Very cool. Nice to see you are keeping the project brewing.
I have my eyes set on some more cavalry, but it will have to get in line lol.
cheers

Loving this project and the figures are gorgeous, a true labour of love.

I did up some more crossbowmen for the army.

Thanks, they are conscripts from the leadpile.

It's a gorgeous project, that's for sure.
-
Great looking Army.

This fantastic inspiring work :-* :-*. I'm currently playing Nevsky by GMT Games a brilliant yet simple operational game for the Baltic and Novgorod Crusades. @Dr Zombie your project and playing Nevsky is convincing me to turn my eyes east and build some a couple of small forces ;)

Thanks everyone.
Another unit of spearmen joins the army.

Lovely army. :-* :-*

Lovely, a very fine array :-*

Very impressive. The gradual buildup really paid of. I was not aware that it had amounted to that many miniatures.
How about a big game of Hail Caesar?
Cheers

Gladly.

Nice little Army. Fascinating history, read something after watching your figures.
-
Some armies just want to be added to. I have a 3rd century Roman army from A&A. Now as I'm typing this I feel the urge to clean and paint another unit for it. I have enough, but another unit of cav would look cool. Or should I do some praetorians....
-
After a game with this army - that I even won :D
(https://i.imgur.com/TQ2s96X.jpg)
I felt like adding to it again. So I did up another unit of spearmen.
They are made from the Gripping Beast Dark age warriors box. I just added heads from various other plastic sets mostly fireforge. To make them more medieval looking. I feel they are a good representation for Levies or militia.
-
allways a pleasure to follow your work Dr. Z aka -F- :D
-
Another great painted unit :-* and well done on the win ;)
-
Really great stuff! I love seeing a mass of medieval troops. Those Fireforge figures are so versatile!
-
Ohh.... Looks really nice :)
-
I have been in a bt of a painting slump lately, but now i have managed to finish another unit for the army.

Nice 8)
A great mix of miniature too :)
-
I like those with the check. Kudos for using it across an entire unit (I get frustrated at one or two figures).
-
Great work on these - especially the chequered shield design as mentioned above
-
Thanks.
It did cost a few sanity points to do the checks.
It is the coat of arms of the danish Rosenkrans family made (more) famous by Shakespeare.
-
Lovely work 8)

Great looking unit! :)
-
I have just bought a 3d printer and the first thing I printed was these three minis to make a command base for this army.
-
Look great!
I think a whole new world has just opened up to you and your printer.
Good luck and bon voyage!
-
Its a wargaming wonder that 3D printer.
Nice to see a painted and based miniature that you saw in liquid form just yesterday.

Chaps, I've been following this for several years. Can anyone out there suggest some books in English on the subject? I have the obligatory Osprey MAAs ,the 2nd edition of Christiansen's "Northern Crusades" plus Williams Urban's books on the Teutonic Knights, but any other suggestions more than welcome. I recently saw a programme on TV about the battle of Masterby, the precursor to the more well-known battle of Visby and this has further piqued my interest in Scandinavian medieval military history
Thanks
-
Impressive.

I am not particularly familiar with English literature on this subject. I would think there isn't much of it.
-
Thanks. I have found a book on “Medieval Scandinavia” on Amazon which might be of interest.
-
I am resurecting this thread as I have added to this army.
I have printed and painted some preview models for an upcoming kickstarter by Styriwar that I will definitely be backing. Follow it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/styriwar/divide-et-impera-12th-century-wargaming-stl-files?ref=banner&fbclid=IwAR2-lRLKvycxHhMVvG-EK0T15l79gkyPlppM9uW7KguUm8jHe0eUjjRH1Cc_aem_ASKFeyzbgt3FfF8V9THwxi_s4J_Uy13SYDeD76h5leJg-SWdB0wxg_DTrZCc9dPDMTCIPfv-1Qkt-qtOCIYXiy8i
These first ones will serve as command bases for my ever growing medieval army.
The first base is from the Danish Jernskæg (iron beard) family. The guy with the polearm has a polearm head from the warsteel miniatures range.
The second base is from the Trolle house.
And lastly the two bases of Styriwar models in front of a small part of my army that contains models from just about all manufacturers of medieval models. And I think they fit right in. I cannot wait to get a few new units painted up for this army.

Lovely miniatures, Dr. Zombie
As to books about this topic in english, have a look at this one published just a few days ago by ARC Humanities:
“Holy War in the Baltic and the Battle of Lyndanise 1219”
The book focuses especially on the military aspects of this particular Danish campaign of 1219 in Estonia and of the Baltic crusades in general around 1200 from a scandinavian perpective.
https://www.arc-humanities.org/9781641892858/holy-war-in-the-baltic-and-the-battle-of-lyndanise-1219/
Probably too expensive for most to buy, but the local libary may get a copy for you

Also for the litterature. If you wouldn't know of any litterature on the topic, then who would. And what a coincidence you wrote it yourself. ;D
It will go on my list of things to give to myself as a treat.

Just a short follow up on Dr. Zombie's latest post.
If anyone has an interest in this particular battle or in the newly publish book on the topic (yes, I am the author), you can acces a digital copy here through UCPH's institutional repository: https://static-curis.ku.dk/portal/files/387431276/WCP_Jensen_Lyndanise_WM.pdf
The bibliography in the book covers some of the more recent publications on the topic (mainly) in English for further reads.
