Title: (AP 2017) Darkest Africa Baluchis
Post by: Dr Mathias on July 14, 2017, 08:05:49 PM
This year's Army Painter project is going to follow tradition with a Darkest Africa project. I have some Foundry Baluchis awaiting paint, along with quite a few zombie Baluchis from Obelisk that are in a similar style. I also have some critters (six hyenas and six baboons) that I may as well do at the same time :)

After this project I estimate that I'll need to paint about 120 more Darkest Africa figures (pretty much all generic tribals) to have the complete Foundry range painted.

I appear to be missing a couple figures from the catalog :(

If anyone happens to have these two chaps circled in red, and are willing to part with them, please let me know :)

Funny these chaps have been on my mind recently as pretty much all the earlier explorers either hired or where given these chaps as guards by the Sultan of Zanzibar who also populated all the coastal forts with them to keep order.

This will be good! Don't think I have any spares of those guys, I'm afraid.

I think this will be as, if not more, impressive as your last AP  :)

cheers

Haha, well I don't know about that. Stop with the pressure!

After going through my Baluchis I have two that don't appear to be catalogued. I wonder if they were mixed into the molds when I bought the packs several years ago- that was the period of re-organizing the line into six figures per pack (even though Foundry would still sometimes send eight). I received an email from Foundry about a new website, and it looks like they're back to the older eight-per-pack again. One had the two guys I'm looking for, so I ordered it. I hope I get what they have in the picture :)

Better late than never, a rag tag group of Baluchis have wandered into the area.

This is the old DA82 "Baluchi Matchlockmen in Arabian Dress 2".

An unexpected encounter...

I don't think I ever photographed the three Missionaries of Africa I made for the Belgian Congo project. They were finished after that year's Army Painter so they didn't make it into the thread :)
The Missionaries of Africa, known as the 'White Fathers" have a distinctive look. I ended up using Perry clergy from the Crusade range with some greenstuff modifications. I wanted to make some of these guys after reading the "Cross and Flag in Africa: The 'White Fathers' during the Colonial Scramble". It is a pretty interesting read, although it downplays the atrocities in the Congo and implies that the Catholic missionaries weren't fully aware of the situation. Some of them were genuine characters- one, Victor Roelens, had his own little theocracy carved out for a while.

Super!! I love the rusty sword of the not-quite-dead one. Really nice effect.

Better late than never, a rag tag group...
I am inclined towards forgiveness of any lateness, since I have nothing ready to post yet myself. :)

Great work Matt.  I think the Zombie Baluchis quite interesting. Did you modify a Foundry DA model or is that another line?

Thanks all, these were fun to paint.

Great work Matt.  I think the Zombie Baluchis quite interesting. Did you modify a Foundry DA model or is that another line?

Thanks, the Zombie Baluchis are from Obelisk Miniatures.

Obelisk Miniatures (https://shop.strato.de/epages/61074886.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61074886/Categories/%22Shop%2028mm%22/%22Darkest%20African%20Fantasies%22)

As you can see they're pretty much tailor made to fit with Foundry in scale and style. My understanding is that the company is no longer in operation though- I may end up with some extras though if you're interested.

Some fine figures you painted.
Thanks for the mini history lesson on the "White Fathers."
Very interesting.

Very interesting.

Thank you, appreciated. The book I mentioned is well worth a read if you have an interest. The author, Aylward Shorter, is a missionary himself- so its safe to assume a bias on some level- but it really is a fascinating glimpse into a variety of subjects that other books on Africa I've read don't address, such as the rivalry and competition between Catholic and Protestant missionaries, the difficulty in getting Africans into the priesthood, accounts of armed missionaries killing or being killed (followed by an edict forbidding them from carrying weapons), conflicts with Islamic slavers, etc.  etc. I haven't read it in a while but there's some genuinely gameable stuff in it. For example, check this guy out:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A9opold_Louis_Joubert

I picked up a book by Aylward Shorter on Nyungu-Ya-Mawe (a big time Mirambo-esque warlord) recently which I hope to read soon. Looks to be a good one.

Puts my own output to shame.
Wonderfully painted minis in very nice setups, even some conversions and interesting background. Looking forward to more to come. 8)

Hardly, the painting on your Primaris is excellent. I had zero interest in them until I saw your versions!

After slightly more than a month, the Foundry Baluchis I ordered arrived. The pack matches the old Victoriana catalogue and has the two I was missing, so that's a relief.
Foundry went through an odd phase several years ago when they did the six-pack reorganization.

Anyway, I'll probably be a few days late with the next batch :)

I was going to say "A month?!!" as Foundry (for all their other faults) have always been pretty much a "next day" sort of company where deliveries are concerned.

Then I remembered, you aren't on the same little island as them like I am.  lol

Well, I'm super behind on this project. I'd hoped to have all the zombies done by Halloween, which is unlikely. A graphic design commission, two game conventions, and some miniatures painted for Hydra ate up the free time. Now kids are pestering me to start their costumes ;)

The next set of Baluchis are done however. This is the contents of the old DA27 pack, with the addition of a fellow from the Foundry Zulu range that Bugsda sent me. Thanks ;)

One new zombie Baluchi added to the mix as well.

Nice work all around, though those zombie Baluchis are the coolest part. I am trying to get ahold of the former owner of Obelisk to see if I can resurrect that line so to speak.

Pretty sure their rights were purchased by Badger Games, so I would check with them to see if they'll be reissuing those figures. See this thread: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=98367.0
