A fiction scenario with Pikemans Lament rules

The Battle of Starynovosk

Map:
A1: Voidova A5: Starynovosk C2: ford (crossed with half move), Cow pen. D4: Farm (Farmhouse, Granary, nearby crops) F5: Pond
The stream can be crossed only from the ford at half speed. The villages, the woods and the farm area are considered rough going.
Swedes: Four units of Swedes are already on the NE road. One unit of Grenadiers, two units of invalid and wounded (one carries the money wagon), one unit of regimental guns (two shots remaining). Colonel Blohm enters (with move activation) from G4 on Turn 2. On Turn 3, one unit of Swedish infantry and a squadron of Valaks enter from G4.
Russian: Two units of villagers (clubmen) have been barricaded in front of Voidova and Starynovosk roads. C5: Dismounted Cossacks (clansmen), have the order to burn the farm, the granary and the nearby crops. G1: Mounted Cossacks (Dragoons) approaching. They have order to hide behind the trees and harass the Swedish column.
On Turn 2, Major Zdravin, two units of Russian infantry and one unit of Garrison Troops enter from C1. On Turn 4, two more units of Garrison Troops enter from A4.

And the cows?
Major Zdravin gave order to the villagers to arm themselves as fast as they could. Voidova is renowned for its famous bovine production. But, the peasants, in their haste, left the cow pen door open! So, now we have two cattle herds roaming free! Each round, they make a random move 4” with D6: 1,2 they turn 45o to the left, 3,4 turn 45o to the right, 5 they stand one round, 6 they move straight forward. If they touch the stream, they stand one round to drink, next round they make a 180o turn and move straight. The cows hinder the movement of the troops. Also, you cannot shoot if the cows are between you and the enemy.

The cows move first, then the Swedes, then the Russian. The invalid units, the treasure wagon and the cannon move on the road with 5” and out of the road with 4”.

Honor points:

Swedes: 1 points for each unit exiting through the Starynovosk-Voidova line, -2 points for each invalid and wounded unit that perish, plus the value points for every Russian unit destroyed. 1 point each if they manage to hold for one turn the farmhouse, the granary or the nearby crops. 1 point if they take fresh water from the pond. Water is needed to put out the fire of the farmhouses with 8+. If there is an umpire, the Swedish player needs not to know this info from the start.

Russian: 3 points if they capture the money wagon, plus the value points of each Swedish unit destroyed and half the value points for each Swedish unit that remains or leaves the table half strength. 1 point for each of the two cowherds they manage to corral back to the cow pen. One point each if they manage to burn (with 7+) the farmhouse, the granary or the nearby crops.

The game ends if the Russians lose 5 units or the Swedish 4, or when all the Swedes leave the table.
If the Swedes pass two units through one of the villages, the game ends automatically.

Plus 5 honor for the one who meets the game end condition.

The Cossacks torch the farm and head for the granary!
Major Zdravin, impatiently gallops forward, unsupported!
Gosh, and he's bound for  a wild charge!

The farm complex is on fire!
Major Zdravin made a wild charge and caused heavy casualties to the Swedes carrying the treasure chest!
They are wavering and then rout, leaving the treasure chest unguarded!

But now, it is the turn of Colonel Blohm to wild charge and Major Zdravin's unit is swept out!
For history's sake, Zdravin received a wild charge, managed to counterattack, lost the first battle, was followed up and lost the second.
Miraculously, all the Russian units that took a morale check, were left unharmed...
But, next round, I brought two aces and, as in the previous game, one of my 4 points unit was recalled!
I had to take out an intact unit of regular Russian infantry!  :-[  :-X

The ebb and tide of the battle!
Colonel Blohm wild charges again and defeats the Cossacks!
There morale is down and they reatreat...
The advancing Swedish grenadiers, bring two aces and retreat a full move!

I told Panos that the Valaks were the antidote to the annoying Cossacks. He took my word for granted and now he directs them to the woods!

The end of Colonel Blohm (?)
Blohm could not avoid a wild charge, played with 6 dice vs 12, lost the battle, received a volley and his unit was eliminated.
The rest of the tough Swede units took a morale check, but stayed unharmed.
The last Swedish infantry platoon retained its morale due to the presence of a hero.

Fighting around the farm rages.
The Swedish grenadiers manage to rout the last regular Russian platoon.
The Garrison troops try to make a semicircle to stop the Swedish tide.

The Valaks proved to be the bane of the Cossacks!
They pursued them until they routed!
(In an intermediate turn I tried to move them away, but failed the move activation roll...)
This was the sixth and final unit loss for the Russians.
The Swedes won.

Now, honor points counting:
Congrats to Panos for his broad victory!
The game had many ups and downs and we both enjoyed it!

Oh! I forgot again! Add +5 points for the Swedes winning the game!

Read to the bitter end... Amused? Me not!  lol lol lol

For a possible scenario continuation, I asked Panos to throw 2 D6 to see what happened to our captains:

Panos brought an 8: Blohm was wounded and rescued by his loyal soldiers. He will recover in time for the next game.

I threw the dice in low spirits. I know when this happens, I have a presentiment... I brought 5. Ill-fated Zdravin...

We read: Captured while hiding in some Honour-draining manner, perhaps in a privy or a dung heap, pretending to be a pregnant woman, or perhaps dressed as a nun. Must be ransomed back, costing 5 Honour.  ??? Aaaargh!!!

The Czar is already preparing an interrogation committee, Zdravin's performance was totally disgraceful!

But, dear readers, may I ask who were my superiors, to whom may I complain?
Who recalled one of my units for a second game in a row?   lol  lol  lol

I think I'll abandon the landlubber's harsh life and turn back to piracy!  lol

Beautiful looking game!  The best part is role playing your officer.  I feel for Zdravin, the same thing happened to my officer.  Can't wait for the follow up battle.

Your words are soothing my heart (maybe Zdravin's also)  lol
Thank you for encouraging me for a follow up!
This is the power of roleplaying, you get in the position of the game character and you share with him his joy, his ambitions, his pain...
I think Zdravin has received such a beating, I need to devise a very devious scenario for his expiation...
Maybe in a few weeks we see Zdravin's comeback!

Recycled cows

Once upon a time, 25 years before, these cow bases were made as expendables for the Classical Maurya Indians, for DBM.
Played a lot with this army once, then, forgotten to the shelf. But the cows, jumped 2000 years and made it to this game!
Now, they didn't act as a stampeding herd, but in some sort of pinball movement they disturbed the players' plans a little bit, which was fun!
