The 8th edition of Warhammer 40.000 really gripped me again. I was very active playing 40K under 3rd and 4th edition. I played in some Nottingham Grand Tournaments and had the honour to meet some of the gaming industry legends. All in all a very nice experience.
But as with most things in live after a while it got it bit paler and in addition with each edition of the rules I disliked them more.
I kept in contact with the game, bought some books here and there, really enjoyed the Horus Heresy line of books including the big black FW books, but very rarely played the game.
In addition my own game system Victory Decision was taking away a lot of my hobby time!
That all changed with the latest 8th 2017 edition. Great simpler rules, good game flow, just fun. I played some games with my Grey Knight, then with some Primaris Marines.
I also noticed my long neglected Eldar minis and decided to give them a try.
The paint jobs are a bit dated for today’s standards... looking like this.

You can see all my attempts in the 2000 Eldar section of my site (http://www.adpublishing.de/html/2000_eldar.html)
So about time to retouch them. You can see below the result of one week of serious repainting.
The minis above are from ancient GW/ Citadel mini ranges. The Rogue Trader Space Elf Command 1987, the Rogue Trader Eldar Artillery 1988, the Rogue Trader Pre-Craftworld Warriors, the One-Piece Guardians and the Metal Guardians with Plastic Arms & Weapons. I bought them all in the 1990s.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Scouts/ Rangers.
In 1991, the Eldar became a unique race, steeped in back story, based in part around the designs of Jes Goodwin. The formal structure of a force led by Psykers and comprising of dedicated single-faceted troops supported by Guardian militia has remained unchanged. The figures themselves formalised the design ethic of Jes Goodwin - organic ovoid shapes and elegant weaponry which implied speed, poise and balance.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Howling Banshees - still my favourite sculpt. The Exarch is from 3rd edition time.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Striking Scorpions. The Exarch is one of my first conversions - female guardian body sword and head from Karrandras.
Rogue Trader Eldar 1987 - Warbot / Vampire Class Spirit Warrior. Yes - this design is indeed 30 years old (also teaches me how old I am to remember its release...) - from a time when there were no Wraithlords, these towering constructs were called Dreadnoughts & Warbots.
I tweaked (converted) it a bit, I added today’s flamer and a shuriken Cannon.
More on my Website and even more minis soon! http://www.adpublishing.de/html/eldar.html

Very nice!
Bought alot of GW recently,a mate gave me a Rogue Trader Marine; and thus it was a slippery slope.
-
Stunning work - those old models are really nice, and I am particularly envious of the Spirit Warrior. 8) 8) 8)
-
Top work as usual. Now, please some rule additions to VD:Future to support 40K...
-
Ah, those are just lovely. I remember these being released well.
-
Top work as usual. Now, please some rule additions to VD:Future to support 40K...
I would love to, but this is a very tricky path full of legal traps...
-
Lovely work as always. Those early Eldar sculpts sure do hold up well, don't they?
-
Your painting is on point as usual and I really like how the rebasing looks. But I'm a bit disappointed that you altered the paint scheme and changed the yellow out for bone...
It's obviously well done, but for me, the gaudy yellow and black just belongs on these old squeekies (preferably with tiger stripes... :D ). Still; the end result looks really nice.
I've got a squad of these very guys in the queu as a kill team for Newcromunda, so I'll be sure to do them in an RT paint scheme to make up for your transgression... ;D
-
These look great Agis, and the time spent repainting them has been a worthwhile improvement IMO. Yes, the RT schemes had their own charm, but as a bigger force these look much more coherent and subtle. Well done! 8)
-
Gorgeous work. Really shows how superb those minis are. A lot of the Eldar sculpts didn't "get better" as they revised them (some got far worse). These still work perfectly well. People are surprised when they play my Eldar in 8th and realize I'm running 95% metal 2nd ed/RT sculpts. lol
-
Stunning brush work 8)
I bet that walker is older than most of the people that play 40k lol
cheers

Not me sadly :-[, but what the hell lol

Big thanks folks!
...Those early Eldar sculpts sure do hold up well, don't they?
Absolutely, the 1991 Jes Goodwin sculpts are still my favourites, some of the later minis come close, but as far as Aspect warriors are concerned, they are still top notch!

LOL, took me years to get used to the bone look, now I like it...

Same here!

HA! Absolutely many of todays kids are amazed to realize how old 40K is...
-
They look fantastic. Very well done.
Tony

Excellent.
I have to admit to not liking the arm asymmetry when they came out, but that looks great.
-
... I have to admit to not liking the arm asymmetry when they came out, but that looks great.
Well, IMO the original stunted short Plasma weapon was not fitting, it looked in a way amputated.
With the longer more elegant shuriken cannon and the flamers, it somehow works.
-
Wonderful repaints, sir.
Some of my favourite RT sculpts of all time in amongst those babies.
They really have aged perfectly well.
:-* :-* :-*
.....and I am particularly envious of the Spirit Warrior. 8) 8) 8)
You are not alone.
:D
I bet that walker is older than most of the people that play 40k lol
Too right.
I like telling the 'know it all' new bloods that I have 40K figures older than them.
Especially when they dont believe me at first.....

More Eldar...
1991 metal Jet Cycles as they were named originally in the old blue catalogue. The bike in the middle is the follow up plastic mini with a metal shuriken cannon.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Fire Dragons and their Phoenix Lord Fuegan - "the Burning Lance," founder of the Fire Dragons Aspect Warriors.
Fuegan was (IIRC) released around 1994, together with the other Phoenix lords and the 2nd edition Rick Priestley blue Codex.
as always, more on my site - http://www.adpublishing.de/html/eldar.html

Großes Kino. Wonderful. Wish I had bought more of these old stuff years ago.
-
More lovely additions to the force.
:-*
I have a hankering for one of those Spirit Warriors now.
I have a few of the smaller drones but none of their larger cousins.
8) 8)
In fact, I am considering adding to my own RT Eldar, thanks both to this thread and playing my first game of SWA with them.
I think I might just finally slap some paint on my own Aspect Warrior conversions....
Thanks for the inspiration.
:D
-
Absolutly fantastic !
-
Thanks folks! :) 8)

That's some really nice painting, although I'll echo the comments about liking the old-school yellow look.
-
And one more squad:
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Scouts/ Rangers, 2nd squad, camouflaged for night fighting.

LOL - lol
Nah, ;) keep on painting! Most relaxing hobby ever!
-
Great work - particularly fond of the Fire Dragons.
-
And again Eldar - this time a very old weapon platform, new terrain and Dark Reapers.
Well the Hobby has changed since the 90s, today we even have Eldar terrain! The above piece is from the restic Deathworld Forest set.
Suitable Shuriken Cannon Weapon platform. The cannon is new, while the platform itself is again from the 90s.
Another old jetbike.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Dark Reaper. The Exarch is one of my first conversions - the web of skulls was removed and a missile launcher attached.

Nice paint jobs.
-
Nice work, Agis.
:-*
I think the new cannon works really well with the old platform.
Did it take much modification to get it to fit?
-
Thanks folks 8)

None at all!
Result!
Incidentally: Thanks to this thread and that of Elbows I have added a few more figures to my Old Skool Eldar pile, including three more Ghost Warriors.
:)

Dooooo it! DOOOOO IT! (chants and hurls metal Eldar at Mason)
lol lol
Oh, I will be.
Thanks to the two of of you (and a recent game of SWA using those that are already done) I have rekindled my love of Old Skool Eldar. The recent photobucket debacle killed all the evidence of them over here so I shall have to start another thread too, I guess...
Thanks for the inspiration, chaps.
;)
-
I've just checked this out after Mason referenced it in his own thread. Wow! Fantastic paint jobs.
-
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/Eldar_Farseer_1.jpg)
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Warlock and Farseer. The Farseer on the right was a Necromunda Specialist Games mini.

I continued my work on old Eldar, this week Dire Avengers.
Rogue Trader Craftworld Eldar 1991 - Dire Avengers - one of the few Aspect miniatures with better modern sculpts. The Exarch is from today’s plastic Dire Avengers.
Minor conversion of the current 2017 plastic Dire Avengers, the legs are from a normal plastic Guardian, also the cloth, all the rest is from the Dire Avenger box.

Lovely colours.

When I started collecting Eldar back in the 1990s there were some metal minis and that was it. Today we even have Eldar terrain!
I noticed some supporting companies that made suitable terrain pieces. The webway entrance below is from Miniatures scenery, a mdf sheet named Elven Dais. It is not really expensive, but after shipment and German sales taxes it was too costly. In addition it was a pain to build.
Do not get me wrong you can build it straightaway and it looks OK, the problem is that the edges are too sharp, looking more like Dark Eldar but not like a wraithbone Craftworld construct! So A LOT of sanding was required...
After some subtle airbrushing and the piece was ready. I may even add some of the new vines from GW.

That looks good.

More retouching of my 20 years old minis... Craftworld Eldar Warp Spider. All minis are the original metal castings!
I played them last week in a 1500 pts game, a bit disappointing. Somehow I never used Warp Spiders effectively, no matter the game edition...
Anyway, I love the minis, so I will try again.

Lovely rebooting!
:-* :-*
These Wraithguard are one of the few things that I did not have back in the day.
I may have to grab a couple as I really liked them.

Thanks!
Lovely rebooting!
:-* :-*
These Wraithguard are one of the few things that I did not have back in the day.
I may have to grab a couple as I really liked them.
I would recommend the new ones, not all plastic GW models are better, but the new Wraithguard/ - blades are a huge step above the old metal ones...
-
Yep, the new Wraithguard are fantastic kits. I remember wanting Wraithguard badly in high school, but they were maybe $8-10 a blister (for a single model), so at that point the idea of a $50+ unit was beyond me. I "think" I ended up with three metal ones and I may have tried to run them at some point. The new plastic kit, while being annoying to assemble is an excellent kit --- it matches the aesthetic perfectly. Just skip the swords and axes (a design decision I really disagree with).
I mounted my new plastic Wraithguard on 30mm bases. I'll probably end up with at least one more set of five.
-
Thanks for the pointers, chaps.
I only want a couple for my skirmishing pirate band, though, so I shall see if they can be found in singles somehow.
:D
-
Speed painted one of the new plastic WG, I knew the model is good, but - whoahhh - it IS good!
http://www.adpublishing.de/html/iyanden.html
-
:o :o
OK, you have sold them to me.
Wonderful brushwork again.
:-*
But.....speedpainted, you say?
How annoyingly good.
>:D
-
Yup, the yellow is actually dead simple, spray primed Averland yellow, primed again from the top with white. Then the yellow shade from Citadel.
Most of the yellow was then finished, I only had to edge highlight something and put some highlights on the raised gemlike spheres.
The gun took longer then all the yellow! Whole mini was finished in around 1.5 h.
-
Wow! That's good.....for normal painting! Never mind speed painting! 8)
-
The only thing I skip (as I really don't like it) is the weird vane coming out of the back of the head. I think it's a useless aesthetic add-on, but other than that they did a really nice job of updating the models without changing the aesthetic much at all. A bit larger, but that's just the sign of the times. If you need singles they exist on eBay for $$$, however you can find the metal ones pretty cheap.
-

:o I was thinking the same yesterday and chose one of the smaller ones!
Maybe I skip it on the next one. ;)

Craftworld Ulthwe Wraithguard. Classic metal casting!
Even the bases are the old 25mm slotta ones... Back from the days were the only round GW bases were 25mm in diameter.

Great work as usual Agis.
Keep it up.
One really feels how old he is when he looks at his minis,
still it's good ... a lifetime of minis :D :D :D :D

Wonderful repainting.
I know I would be very happy with your early paint jobs.
Now I want to dig out my old stuff
I know they are in my garage somewhere.
Just have to go find them.
That might take many hours to do. lol
-
I think you need practice, I will send you all my unpainted models to practice on, and I'll even pay for you to ship them back - honestly, you can't lose ;) lol :D

lol lol Hmm, no - I checked , I still got enough minis around to practice.
But as soon as I run dry I let you know! ;)
-
Beautiful repaints, as usual.
I do still love the oldies, even though you did such a great job of selling the new kids on the block earlier in the thread.

I have finished the Wraithguard squad incl. a Spiritseer:

The original! It all started in 1999. There was no official Wave Serpent model around and I really wanted one for my Eldar army.
I then noticed a conversion idea from a guy named Roy Bann. I ordered his conversion plans and started working on my Serpent.
I took a lot from his ideas, but also added some personal twists - and of course: a way better paintjob. ;-)
The turret was the usual spoon solution, all the rest is made out of plasticard and some pieces from a Fire Prism kit.
I decided to rework the model.
Off with the clunky wing extensions and the too big midsection.
The energy field emitter are from the OOP Forge World Eldar vehicle upgrade kit, same goes for the twin linked Starcannons.

:o :o
That flyer is a beauty!
And almost a scratchbuild too?
My giddy aunt, I am impressed.

Love the new Spirit Warriors too, especially the extreme highlighting on the Seer which is something I can never get to look right.

Old Jet Bikes with toady’s bases! Maybe I overdid it, but I really went to town adding GW alien plants, pebbles and some heads from Scibors basing range!
