One of my next projects, which will certainly keep me busy for the next few months, is the painting of a troop for SAGA.
Since I had been in the reenactment for a long time and had built up a gotlandic representation for the beginning of the 11th century by means of grave finds, my first army will orient itself accordingly.
However, I will play my Gotlanders not as Viking, but as Anglo-Danes - reason are the corresponding grave finds in the various graveyards, in which quite often axe heads of Daneaxes have been found.
As far as equipment and clothing are concerned, my Gotlanders will have an Eastern influence.
There are hardly any finds of helmets and garments on Gotland, but I am guided here by the representations of the numerous sculptures on which repeatedly pointed helmets, bobbing trousers etc. are recognizable.

Excellent painting! I like the eastern influence so far as well. :)
-
Excellent stuff!
-
Many thanks for your kind words, guys! :)

The next unit for my Gotlanders - 8 warriors.
This is also my first attempt to depict damage and dust on the shields and as you can easily see, I still have to practice a lot ;)
Some pics - some more on my blog: https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.de/2017/08/saga-my-saga-begins-1st-unit-of-warriors.html (https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.de/2017/08/saga-my-saga-begins-1st-unit-of-warriors.html)

-
Thank you :)
Most games will be played with 6 points, so I will need 8 more warriors, followed by 12 heathguard and the warlord of course.
-
Very nice.
-
Many thanks ;)

After a break that lasted a bit longer than expected (job and family left almost no time for the hobby), at least the next point point for my Gotlanders is ready now - 8 more warriors; a mixture of Gripping Beast and V&V Miniatures.
The Gripping Beast ones:

Great painting and very cool terrain in the background. I especially like your work on the shields, the freehands are very well done. With the project being related to your reenactment representation, do you have a model that's representing you or very similar to your kit? I coudn't resist doing that when I first built a set of the Gripping Beast platic Hirdmen ;)
-
Glad you like them, aircav and Neunfinger :)
Not really, Neunfinger - but the guy with the 2handed Spear on the left in the first picture comes very close ;)
-

Why Gotlanders, if I may ask? Do you have a particular interest in the area? :)
-
Presumably because of Beowulf?
"I've come to kill your Monsta!"
-
Presumably because of Beowulf?
"I've come to kill your Monsta!"
I don't think you can with any certanity equate geats with goltanders, however flattering the thought is to us who live here. But that is of little importance, Utgaard. I am not out to undermine your project. :)
-
Ah, I appear to be getting Götaland and Gotland muddled up. I refuse to accept responsibility, it's their fault for having such similar names.
-
Ah, I appear to be getting Götaland and Gotland muddled up. I refuse to accept responsibility, it's their fault for having such similar names.
Yes. And we are very sorry for the confusion (taking full responsibility for this mess as I happen to be a Göt living on Gotland).
-
Oh this is easy - I was active in Reeanctment for many years and I tryed to represent a Gotland warrior.
I used Lena Thunmark-Nylén´s outstanding 7 volumes "Die Wikingerzeit Gotlands", together with a book about the famous picture stones as a basis for my equipment, that I built then mostly be myself.
-
Cool project. Those shields are awesome.
-
Thank you :)
-
Not really, Neunfinger - but the guy with the 2handed Spear on the left in the first picture comes very close ;)
Ah, the good old leather gambesons, I still have one of those tucked away. Started to ignore too many hits in it, because it was so thick :D
-
Oh, you would be glad about the thickness in Huscarl battles like in Neustadt-Glewe, or if you have to fight against the Russians or Poles in Moesgard, or say in Wolin :D
-
We train in Huskarl regularly and I've participated in a couple of battles in Ibbenbueren, Vechta, Schlotzau and bigger training sessions around Germany over the last four years and aside from a couple of bruises I've always been fine in Motocross-protection and chainmail or lamellar. I was going to participate in Glewe last year, but had to cancel due to injury. From what I've been told by the friends who went that year and this again I'll pass though, just heard of too much recklessness and unnecessary injuries.
But I'll try not to derail this further and look forward to seeing more of your painting :D
-
The next Point for my Gotlanders - the first 4 Hearthguards, all 4 Figures are from Gripping Beast.
If playing my Gotlanders as Anglo-Danes (so I can use Daneaxes) there will be 2 units of Hearthguard, 6 Figures with normal weapons and 6 more with the mentioned Daneaxes.
Accordingly, here are the first 4 Guards with normal hand-weapons and shields; as with all my SAGA-Figures before: all shields are freehand.

-
I really like your Gotlanders. The shields are cool in particular, giving some uniformity whilst being different in design.
Jan
-
Thank you very much, Jan :)
-
Great painting again, I love the attention to detail. The glassbeads look great and give the figure subtle character.
-
Many thanks :)
-
impressing and neat work. Great freehands!
keep it coming!
Cheers
GS
-
Thank you very much :)
-
Nice! I like the idea of a group from Gotland.
They'd probably look like most other folk at the time... But it is a nice idea!
-
Many thanks :)
I oriented myself to the Gotland picture stones regarding helmets and clothing, so thats why I selected some Rus to represent some of the figures on mentioned stones - as you will see at the next painted ones, they will look more like traditional Vikings ;)
-
My Gotland Vikings of course need some shelter for the harsh winters in Scandinavia, so I decided to build them some homes to defend.

The roof and exterior almost done.
There is still a lot to do, as far as the details for the interior of the house are concerned, and of course there is still a garden and an outlet for the pigs ;-)
-
Your thatched roof looks excellent- very nice work.
-
Thank you :)
-
Very nice work! 8)
Christopher
-
Only found your thread now. Gorgeous painting of those Gotlanders, and your imagination & skills with the longhouse truly inspire!
-
Yeah, great job on both Gotlanders and this built. The coconut fiber idea I might steal for future projects :-).
-
Thank you all very much for the kind words :)
-
Here are the details for the interior of the long house - some chests to stow the possessions of the inhabitants, table and stools and last but not least a bed.
Everything is self-made except for the small box.
The fur on the bed and the pillows are made of Greenstuff - for the first attempt reasonably ok, I definitely need a lot more practice for this stuff.

-
Lovely details, especially the bed. :-* :-*
-
Thank you :)
-
Excellent work all around. The attention to detail is superb; it took me a few views to notice that the bedstraw is visible under the blankets. Also the idea for the thatching is great.
-
Thank you very much - I did not even expect anyone to notice ;)
-
More Brilliant stuff 8) 8)
-
Many thanks, aircav :)
The interior is completed for now - what would a Viking household be without any weapons and shields?
Next step is to build a little outdoor part containing a little garden for herns and vegetables and a pen for pigs and maybe other livestock. And a good farm of course needs a proper dunghill (hope this is the correct expression for the german word "Misthaufen").

-
What manufacturer made the animals? Are they metal or plastic or resin?
-
Cat and the chickens are plastics from Warlord, the pigs are metal ones from Warbases.
-
The longhouse for my Vikings is completed now.
I have also built a small garden and a pen for animals like pigs or goats, so that the residents can also provide some foof for themselfs - you can not always go on raids, even as a Viking ;-)

Naturally, all good farms also have a few chickens and a dung heap.

And of course a cat to hold the mice at bay.

-
Very nice indeed. :-* Did I miss something as to why the central ridge is made of different material?
-
Looks fantastic 8) 8)
The garden is superb 8) 8)
-
Lovely! Very cozy and homey looking. :D
-
Thank you very much guys :)
@Hu Rhu: It´s a kind of turf/sod (in German called Grassoden).
I have seen this on some reconstructions in museum villages. On the one hand the roof ridge should be better waterproof, on the other hand this makes it safer against strong wind or storm due to the weight of the earth.
-
That is a beautiful and meticulously detailed farm, you have lavished a great deal of effort into it and it has paid off!
And I really liked how you painted the shields on the first page.
-
Thank you very much :)
-
Some more terrain pieces added to my collection - the results of my last weeks together with the longhouse: trees (one can´t have enough of them) and some wattle fences.
I will add some more of the latter, especially on piece with a gate.

-
Very nice work . Your trees look great- what are you using for foliage?
trees (one can´t have enough of them) ...
In agree- I am getting quite a collection these days. :D
-
Thank you :-*
Different foliage in this case - tryed to find out which of my usual methods looks good, is not too time consuming and sturdy enough to withstand the wargame rigids.
In this case fibre from woodland and different foliage from Woodland, Heki and Silhouette. I have adjusted colour and density for all trees for some uniformity of course.
I will stick for future trees with Heki and Silhouette. More expensive then Woodland and others, but best looking and reasonable quick.
-
Very well done. Nothing like a bit of wattle to spike things up.
-
Many thanks!
-
The Warlord for my little force of Gotland Vikings - ready to go on some viking, accompanied not only by his hearthguard, warriors and so on, but his veryx own standard bearer too.
They are both based separately so the standard bearer can join a unit but I also made a movement tray to group both together.
Shield and flag are both freehands again, with the flag actually based on a motive of a Gotland picture stone.

And the complete force as it stands for now, ready for some games - 4 points. More will follow over the next few weeks to bring them not only to 6 points, but add some variation too:

-
Those are cracking trees, have you posted your technique anywhere? Nicely painted and photographed minis too!
-
Nice - I made sabot bases for my Warlords so they can have a standard bearer. They are on 20mm square bases like all my other Saga chaps, and I have a bunch of circular bases about 45mm across with two holes to fit warlord + standard bearer.
-
Thank you guys :)
@plessiez: Used different just to see with which one I get quick but good looking results and sturdy enough to be used in wargames and not just for some kinds of dioramas.
-
Beautiful work, very inspirational!
-
oh wow, fabamundo.
terrain - painted figs - photos, all great.
-
Thank you guys, much appreciated :)
-
The next point for my force of Gotlanders - 4 Hearthguard with Daneaxes.
Miniatures are V&V Miniatures, which are just a real joy to paint and are super detailed and well researched. Shields as before all freehand.

-
Lovely painting - lush colours and terrain they're in.
-
Beautiful; stuff Utgaard- both the figures and the terrain.
-
Lovely painting and modelling :-*
-
Thank you very much guys :)
-
I especailly like that hand painted flag, but everything is a delight to see. Great work.
-
Many thanks :)
-
And another point of Hearthguards for my Gotlanders, this time with mixed weapons, so I can field 2 units of 6 figures each - one with Daneaxes and one with 1handes weapons and shields.
Shields again all freehands, miniatures are Gripping Beast.

This will bring my little force to 6 points for SAGA, the next miniatures are just for adding some variation, so I can play them as real Vikings, if I want.
-
Great stuff as usual Utgaard.
-
Very very nice 8) 8) 8)
-
Thank you very much guys - much appreciated :)
-
As a supplement for my Gotlanders, if I want to field them as Vikings instead of Anglo-Danes, there is one unit that must not be missing of course - the notorious Berserker!
Miniatures from Gripping Beast but with a little bit of converting - the all don´t use shields!
So if you look a bit closer at these guys and remember the one Gallic gladiator from the movie Gladiator, you may find some similarity ;-)

So I would call my force of Gotland for SAGA completed for now, a picture of my complete force will follow in a few days.
-
Nice painting, must feel good to get them completed.
-
Thank you and yes, feels good - but the next project is already in sight :D
-
nice painting and superb photos.
-
Many thanks :)
