Title: Rules for Palestine
Post by: SaltBrushBill on August 09, 2017, 04:08:56 PM
I want to play the Palestine campaign (and probably later Mesopotamia) using Pendraken 10mm figures, concentrating on the cavalry, but cannot find any suitable rules.   The commercially available rules I have considered so far are focussed on trench warfare on the Western Front: not what I want.   Does anyone have any suggestions?

I do remember a set many years ago in a yellow soft cover, ring bound, featuring pictures of a couple of ANZAC trooper models on the cover, that were for the Middle east campaigns, but I cannot remember the name nor do they now appear to be still available.

Any help would be appreciated.

ITLSU is a great set of rules. If you want something more abstract, Contemptible Little Armies might be good. Back of Beyond should work a treat too.

You could even try colonial rules like Death in the Dark Continent.

Many thanks, guys.   I have all of Chris Peers rule sets and don't think they would fit the sort of game I have in mind with 10mm figures.   I have "Through the Mud and the Blood" but did not realise there are a second set of rules specifically designed for the Middle East and I have now ordered a copy.   It was interesting to see that they look at the post-war conflict in what is now Iraq: nothing seems to change in the part of the world!

Many thanks for the help.

A couple of the Lardies Specials have scenarios that might be worth looking at as well:

A lot of the scenarios from past specials have been included in a compendium which might be worth a look:

Depends what level of game you are interested in, but I've run perfectly decent games in both Mespot and Palestine using Great War Spearhead and Square Bashing. Many of the battles are quite small, and a division or three easily handled with those.

For really big battles I've used OP14 by Richard Brooks (eg 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gaza).

It is also easy enough to bodge up a Middle East version of Fire and Fury for this theatre, I did that for Ottoman invasion of Egypt.

I don't find "Spearhead" very appealing, to put it mildy, but have ordered the compendium ITLSU and wait to receive mail from the Two Fat Lardies.   I am looking at battalion/division sized games, as few of the battles were much larger unless you look at a whole campaign at one bite.   I wish I could paint well enough to make 28mm worthwhile: some great pictures from our more gifted brethren.

Thanks for the If the Lord Spares Us tip. I have been looking for brigade level rules for the early WW1 Western European period they look like they would be ideal.

The next Great War Spearhead II supplement will feature Gallipoli and Egypt. Here is a photo of the Gallipoli terrain. It features Hexon Terrain tiles covered by the new Western Desert Mat from Deep-Cut Studios (http://www.deepcutstudio.com). I have marked up some of the key terrain to help with orientation.

I've just seen your post above.  We don't email out files; they are immediately available for download on purchase.  The system is automatic.

If you drop me an email, I will resolve this for you.  At present I cannot link the name SBB to an order which, I presume, was placed in your real name.

Regards

PS Apologies to everyone else, but I want to help SBB with this.

Here is a photo showing two companies of ANZACs contemplating the terrain ahead. Forum rules do not permit direct quotes from the 6mm figures on the 1.25" x 1.25" stands... the expletives might offend.

The shot is taken along the line of the Sari Bari ridge in the background, which included Chunuk Bair.

Being Australians I suspect that, "She'll be right, Mate" was not amongst them.   For anyone who wants to learn a bit about Australian English there is an hilarious Mike Harding CD called, (I think) "Rooted".   I did my sub-lieutenant's courses with a crowd of Australians which was an "educational experience".

No. Likewise 'Streuth, Mate' was probably not top of the list either ;-).

I should have added that each hexagon represents a 20 meter contour.

And another view of the Hexon terrain, marked up with the names of various terrain features all to familiar to Australian and New Zealand readers.
