Title: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New stark pikeman)
Post by: Darathar on August 13, 2017, 11:50:21 AM
So I started this project in 2014 after seeing Frank's and Captain Blood's legendary works but lost steam somewhere along the way... Fast forward three years and now I think its time to get back into one of my favorite projects of all time.

I'll start off with showing all the figures I did back in the day, first up is The Hound Sandor Clegane made from Wargames factory vikings, Darksword miniatures, GW and Perry bits.
And A knight sworn to house Tyrell made of Perry bits and a gondor captain finecast abomination cut up with a green stuff cloak.
He was actually lucky to make it here as he was nearly attacked while he was on the road
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/13434_13_08_17_12_46_47.JPG)
Next up is Darathar himself a loyal sworn sword to House Stark made from Perry, Gripping beast and Darksword bits.

and last for now is my first unit of Stark pikemen made from gripping beast perry and wargames factory bits, I plan to add some grass on the bases at some point but i'm not sure if i want dead grass or green grass :?
Thats all for now but there will be much more to come soon. I'm thinking a unit of stark archers next, i'm pretty sure i'll be using dragon rampant rules for these figures as it seems like a great way to go but i don't know yet.

This looks like a great start and I’m looking forward to seeing some more. I especially like the direwolf badges on the pikemen.

I think dragon rampant is a good fit for wargaming in Westeros. With fantasy worlds where there are a bunch of different races you sometimes end up with weird things where both elf and goblin spearmen end up as ‘light foot’, which feels off to me. With GoT being mostly humans it works better in my mind.
The ‘strength point’ approach lets you dial in how powerful you want your characters to be — i.e. is Jaime Lannister equal to six elite knights, or is he just slightly better than average? Also, the way the fantastic upgrades work as sort of garnish suits how I envision Westeros.

Cracking work on the Starks and the 'Hound' isjust how I envisaged him, superb. Can't wait for more from you.
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (new with Stark Archer)
Post by: Darathar on August 14, 2017, 11:11:35 AM
Thanks for all the kind words everyone  :).
@Byrthnoth thanks for the advice it sounds like Dragon Rampant is the way to go for battles in Westeros.
I finished my first stark archer today i havn't based him yet as i'll mass base them when there done.
Also a couple of WIP shots of The Great Jon Umber, I put him on a 40mm base to make him stand out abit/ give him room the swing his great sword around since i remember reading its supposed to be even bigger than Ned's sword Ice.
I'm thinking of making a unit of spearmen for him to lead into battle eventually.

Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New With Ned Stark)
Post by: Darathar on August 20, 2017, 01:30:13 AM
Next up is Lord Eddard Stark:
He has a Perry foot knights torso and arms, a lord of the rings Easterling Kataphrakts captain cloak with green stuff, an old GW "hairy Head" sprue wolf icon (why don't they make it anymore!) and a corvis belli infinity Ariadna highlander rifleman head.
I'm going to hopefully convert the entire Stark family with Jon Snow, Rob and Bran coming soon.
Coming next for troops will be more Stark archers and some Thugs from house Bolton.

I like your Ned Stark - very good. Some nice creations there... it's good fun creating your own models from parts isn't it?  :)
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New With Bolton Scum)
Post by: Darathar on August 20, 2017, 07:55:58 AM
Thanks guys, @Captain Blood: yes it really is!  :) it's great to do a painting project where you don't have to worry about "official" miniatures and trying to keep up with rules and such.

Next up is a couple of Scum bags from House Bolton I've always imagined there's a lot of shady characters hanging around the Dreadfort. They will be the start of a small warband for House Bolton with some War dogs and Ramsay to lead them.
They are a mix of Perry HYW English with Frostgrave Cultist & Soilder heads and arms

Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Ned Stark and Boltons)
Post by: Captain Blood on August 20, 2017, 10:15:26 AM
Nice.

It's a great idea - making the Boltons look a little bit like the squint-eyed men of Bree... Like they've got a little bit of something nasty in their genes...
I've mainly tried to make my Boltons look a touch more barbaric and olde-worlde than my Starks and Lannisters... But I've also used one or two of the Frostgrave cultist heads. They do have just the right icky look to them :)

By the way, I've added your thread to the LAF GoT compendium thread, so keep it up!  ;) 8)

Such a noble and loyal looking Ned! Great job!
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Robb Stark)
Post by: Darathar on August 27, 2017, 06:30:45 AM
Thanks Guys, and thanks Captain Blood better keep painting ;).
Next up is Robb Stark, I'd place this version of him very early in his campaign.
I tried not using much shading on the face to make him appear younger as the perry face is supposed to be an older person.
He's made of Perry HYW english army Body and Head, arms from Perry Foot Knights and a Frostgrave soilders shield with a Space wolf transfer coloured grey - (feeling lazy today) :D.
The next Stark coming up will be Jon Snow coming very soon.
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Robb Stark)
Post by: LordOdo on August 27, 2017, 11:24:50 AM
Good looking Robb! Your version is the closest to how I imagined him, so far :)
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Jon Snow)
Post by: Darathar on September 16, 2017, 07:56:27 AM
Thanks for the kinds words LordOdo!!
So after a brief break from this project heres my next addition Jon Snow:
This is the closest to what i imagine Jon Snow looks like in my head, I imagine this is probably around the time he goes out into wildling territory and meets Mance Rayder and such. Usually i would have nights watch with more chain mail but i wanted a hooded version going out into the Wilds.

He has a Frostgrave Soldiers body, FG soldiers sword arm with a GW space wolf chainsword pommel attached, a Warmachine Cygnar rangers head (which a did a real Theon Greyjoy job trying to cut off!) and a FG cultist arm with a green stuff cloak.

After taking pics of this mini I think I need to attempt to make some form of photo box to get better pics out of so hopefully it works out and i'll come back with better quality pics.

I have a mini of Ghost being painted up now so he will be coming to this thread very soon.
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Jon Snow)

Thanks Captain Blood and Duke Donald! Ghost is about 90% done ATM, easy as paint job so I'll have pics of him and Jon later today   :)
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Ghost)
Post by: Darathar on September 17, 2017, 06:52:46 AM
Next up is the runt of the litter Ghost:
No conversion or anything done he's just the Darksword miniature of Ghost in their GRRM line they make.
Now there ready to go and kill some wildlings together
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/13434_17_09_17_7_38_49_2.JPG)
I've really enjoyed making Jon and Ghost so I think I may have to make some more Sworn Brothers for them to hang out with then i'll have to get a box of FG barbarians for wildlings for them to go out and fight.

The only problem I have with making all these minis for ASOIAF is that I want to make everything at once   >:(
The next Characters I have planned is Bran Stark, Samwell Tarly and Benjen Stark so i'd better get to it  ;)

Nice stuff in here! What are you using for the snow? (The kind that's frozen water, not a supposed bastard growing up in the north...)
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Jon Snow & Ghost)
Post by: Darathar on September 17, 2017, 11:06:15 AM
Thanks Coenus Scaldingus, the snow used is from a Brand called Heki its really glassy looking stuff.
http://www.heki-kittler.de/sand.htm (http://www.heki-kittler.de/sand.htm)
its called Nr. 3343 Schneeglitzer on that page. I got it from MR toys Toyworld in Australia i think its model train stuff.
The way i put it on is using it and PVA glue with water like this Dr Faust video but using it instead of baking soda.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQcELStsodI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQcELStsodI)
I untill very recently used the baking soda stuff but its abit too fragile for gaming, using this stuff it sets rock hard and looks like its wet like snow hope this helps  :)

Ghost looks fabulous! And just the right size, bigger than a bog standard wolf but not overpowering Jon. Great stuff.

That certainly helps! Pretty sure I've seen some Heki products in local(ish) model railway shops, so will be on the lookout for their snow whenever I'm visiting one in the future. Thanks!

Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Nights Watch)
Post by: Darathar on September 23, 2017, 01:00:28 PM
Here are some Night Watch brothers:
I imagine the Nights Watch are a bit all over the place when it comes to arms and armour,
I don't imagine there as scrubby as they are in the show but I can't see them being a uniform force either.
These two are from the Shadow Tower I've made them without chain mail as I imagine Castle Black probably gets the majority of the good stuff and sends what they can down to them.
Next two are from Castle Black I made them a little more organized looking.
And last is another Shadow Tower ranger with this guy i tried to get a little of the thug aspect of the wall since they do take in all manner of characters from westeros.
Most of my Nights Watch will have simple axes, spears and bows because steel Isn't cheap and the Nights Watch almost works like a charity and most lords bar the Northern ones really don't seem to care to much about helping them out.

Next up is Benjen Stark, He's made from gripping beast vikings, frostgrave soldiers and another one of those Highlander Infinity Arinadna heads with a green stuff cloak. I'm really liking painting up the nights watch I've got two more rangers nearly finished and both Samwell Tarly and Jeor Mormont being converted up at the moment so more to come soon  :)

Next up is Lord Commander Jeor Mormont with his trusty, if a little mouthy Raven with some corn in his hand to keep it quiet.

Till next time!  ;)

What is dead may never die!

So it's been a while (damn sci-fi) but every now and again I come back to Westeros.

So hot of the brush but cold on the wall is three new Rangers of the shadow tower.

They're Perry kit bashes with the leader made up of a perry body reaper head and oathmark elf arms.

Hopefully it won't be two years before I make more  :D.

Next up Theon Greyjoy, I'm placing this version of him around the first to second book. He's a HYW perry french body, GW lotr swan Knight head and oathmark arms and quiver. I didn't realise his arms didn't match until I started painting him but eh, I'm sure the Starks have plenty of money to spend on custom chainmail for him and it looks ok. I just won't do late night conversions anymore  o_o.

Added some more figures to the Wip pile. They are Redbox games figures I'm going to use as iron born. They are tall and skinny but I don't imagine the iron islands are known for great nutrition.

Wildling cheif will be next he's turning out to be quite a handsome chap  lol and I'm finally getting around to adding arms and a head to my 5 year old Tyrion Lannister conversion.

Nice work!

Aren't those red box models quite a bit smaller than the plastic ones. At least the ones I have are bit on the tiny side.

Just finished my wildling cheiftain. I got pretty into this one so I just decided to make my own character as I'm sure not even George RR Martin knows who all the wildling leaders are.

He's called Doguhr the deathless, he's quite old and has seen far to many battles between crows and his clan. He gets his name from the fact that the stubborn bastard won't die he's been mauled by a wolf stabbed, shot by arrows and had his skull cracked open on more than one occasion. He's starting to slow down now and quite often has nose bleeds due to his head injuries but his hatred for the crows keeps him going!

Next up is some ironborn... If I don't make more wildlings and some undead crows may make an appearance. Cheers for reading  :).

Thanks Gibby64!
So instead of those iron born I turned to Kings landing and decided to paint up the ever so lovely queen Cersei Lannister.

She's a hassle-free miniature.

And also painted up a mantic games tent for my impending Lannister force.

Also found a gold cloak I did up last time I was painting.

Much more to come.

Love your gold cloaks, I’m not a fan of their, or King’s Landing more generally, has been portrayed in the tv series.

Thanks so much guys your comments it really helps me with my enthusiasm on this project :). I know what you mean mr.j crappy guards with gold chainmail... Yeah right.

So since I can't resist making even more nights watch apparently, I decided to make Yoren.

He's has a Warmachine cygnar ranger head, an oathmark goblin body for his bad posture and frostgrave cultist arms.

Cheers for reading more to come.

... been a while my bad  :-[. Finally got some more Westeros painting in with some more rangers for The Nights Watch. Did up three rangers with spears and a ranger with bow. All are a mix of perry and north star plastic which works so well love building with all these kits.

Thank you so much Captain Blood, AKULA, Rick W., HappyChappy439 and Ogrob! Always love coming back to this project :).
Next up is a Veteran Ranger for the Nights Watch no conversions this time he's an artizan borderlands fantasy ranger.

I wanted him to be more weathered looking like he'd be beyond the wall more than he's on it. Probably tracking wildling warbands and taking note of their movements.

Finally got my hands on parts to make Samwell Tarly so he'll be coming in the future and more rangers and wildlings and terrain so I can get some games happening. Thanks for reading :).
Title: Re: Darathar's Adventures In Westeros (New with Samwell Tarly)

Next is Samwell Tarly it was a real struggle to find a portly medieval figure but I finally found one in Fireforge games city militia spearmen resin pack for their medieval Russians. I then used a Northstar's metal forest outlaws conversion set for frostgrave pole and head and frostgrave soldier arms and a torch from the new Fireforge games Northmen set. His eyes look better in person they look abit pale in any photos I take but owell...

I just couldn't give him a weapon so instead he got a torch and a stick he's picked up for hiking I'd say he'd be dragging up the rear of a patrol checking out the scenery.

Cheers for reading  :)

First time visitor, love your rangers!

Great kitbash for Sam he looks portly enough, it's hard get pictures to show eyes properly I struggle with that too.

Great idea mixing a goblin body with human head too, now I have to check out the previous pages for more!  :D

Been a while yet again... I'm still going at this project  :).

I've been starting terrain and other minis for adventures beyond the wall starting with this Wight. Poor lad used to be a crow.

Thanks to everyone for the replies  :). I'll never give up on this project but life gets in the way and it's great to step foot once again beyond the wall. I rebased my first Wight onto a multibase for both use in kings of war use and also when I'm using these in song of blades and heroes they are not so much the enemy but more when the nights watch and wildlings throw down they are a random encounter that noone wants to stick around for... Ever!

These are the usual mix of perry and Northstar goodness.

As always much more to come hopefully quicker this time. Working on more nightwatch and padding my stark pikemen out to a bigger unit.

Thanks everyone! Really picking up steam again with this project finally. Inkpaduta I haven't had many but there's still time  :).

Small update got another stark pikeman done the next goal is for 40 of them I'm at 22 so here we go.

I got the Victrix Vikings kit so now I have a bunch of hairy beardy lads to add to my Starks.

I've got a kit bashed idea in my head of doing Jaimie Lannister after he's been caught and lost a hand so he may be next as I paint up my Starks.
