Title: Critique/Advice Requested: 10th Hussars Sabertache
Post by: Anna Elizabeth on August 15, 2017, 09:08:21 PM
Hello All,

I'm working on Perry Miniatures 10th Hussars.

Here is an example of the real Sabretache:

And here is my attempt on the Officer miniature:

What do you think? And advice or constructive ideas will be most welcome. :)

Hard to tell with the flash photography if I'm honest, but at that scale you obviously can't reproduce most of the detail. From my own perspective, with something that fiddly I just try to get the shapes about right to keep it clean, crisp and symmetrical. Yours looks fine from what I can make out.

I couldn't get a clear shot without the flash, it's mainly golden squiggles, if you think it's close enough that will work. :)

Thank you. :) I'm going to try a coat of matte varnish and call it good I think.

It needs a few more touchups, but here is the 10th Hussars Officer with a coat of Matte Varnish.

The finished figure is outstanding. I especially love the blanket roll, the shading is perfect. Well done!

@Andrei - Thank you for the reference photos. :) With the Perry Hussars, only the officer shows the Sabretache, so I think I'll just leave my 10th CO in Full-dress, but at least my 19th Hussars officer is accurate.

@RichBliss - thank you! :) I love cavalry miniatures, I try to do my best work on them. I followed the details in a plate I found from the 2nd Afghan War.

My Perry cav all got damaged in my recent move to a new apartment, but at least repair and finish are underway. :)

He is black leather, and you have white.

Hi Andrei. My source for white belt is this: http://www.britishbattles.com/war-in-egypt-and-sudan/battle-of-el-teb/ painting which is also featured on pgs. 50-51 of Mike Snook's "Go Strong Into the Desert", as well as Plate 15, featured on pg. 46 of the same book.

They were white with the rank and file, but for the officers, they were black. This is the distinctive sign of the regiment. Look again at the photo of the officers of the regiment in Afghanistan, which I quoted above.

Ahh, now I understand. Thank you. I was confused by the "8th Hussars pattern" comment.

I found a good link with the photo you posted: http://www.hussards-photos.com/UK/UK_10_ALB_Jellalabad.htm

Well, it will be simple enough to repaint the Officer's belts. :) Thanks again.
