Title: zirrian's Judge Dredd/2000AD painting blog
Post by: zirrian on August 23, 2017, 04:14:11 PM
Hello, kind folks of LAF!

After a lot of lurking, and the urge to documentate my Judge Dredd/2000AD gaming project, I've decided to start a thread for my stuff here. I hope it helps me to stay somewhat focused, get some ideas from other kind folks, and build up my ego  lol

On a more serious note - as bad as it might sound, my first encounter with Dredd was the Stallone movie and I liked that. I could say that I was young, but I have still fond memories of Dredd and Rico belching "LAAAAAW!" at each other in comedic fashion. Also, as I'm from Hungary, I had little contact with 2000AD. Years later I've read Batman and Dredd, then played the Rogue Trooper, and after a bunch of mish-mash events, I've purchased a whole lot of figures, starting with some Citadel figurines. So without further ado, let me present Judge Bambra, Judge Gallagher and Judge Patton:

I really like these old minis. They are enjoyable to paint, not overburdened with detail (which doesn't mean they are featureless), and look really nice once finished.

From the Citadel minis, I have Hershey (currently getting painted), Ol' Stoneyface himself (actually two of them, the second will be in the stash for a while...), SJS Judge Slocum, Mad Cal, Judge Death, Mortis and Fire, some punks, Junior Angel, and a bunch of Shadowrun minis who'll be used as gangers or walley judges. I have two boxes of the old Mongoose plastics because I didn't wanted to let them slip away, so got two from eBay quickly. Also coming is a Warlord/Mongoose starter box with the expansion, and under obtaining are a bunch of random judge minis, street gangers, citi-def, sky surfers, all the good stuff. And if anyone's considering getting rid of some Dredd stuff...don't hesitate to contact me ;)

Hope you'll enjoy my pictures, and in case you folks have any questions, recommendations, anything, feel free to ask.

Great work, great figs and great subject!

2000ad is currently putting out a best of collection. A great way to get into the original comic books.

Thanks! Do you know a good online retailer that posts to Hungary for a good price? I ordered the first Tales of Nu-Earth from Bookdepo (I admit I like Rogue a bit more than Dredd...so I really hope Warlord will release the minis from the KS), and plan to get the whole collection (and do the same for the Dredd and Strontium Dog series as well), so maybe a best of collection is not that urgent - but thanks nonetheless!

Excellent painting, very vibrant and nostalgically reminiscent of actual comic book art.

Regarding publications, I got almost all of the Judge Dredd Complete Case Files in PDF format from http://www.drivethrucomics.com/.

Quality-wise, the PDFs are good value for money and enormously space-saving, if you are satisfied with reading the stories and don't require the "physical experience".

Note that the site has some area restrictions (for example, I cannot buy individual 2000AD progs, but the collections all worked), so you might want to check if they allow purchases from Hungary.

The "Complete Dredd Files" and other collections are available through Amazon via Kindle download and through Rebellion Publishing website (you can download the app via iTunes).
I've ordered via both as I already had a Amazon account but also signed up with Rebellion as not only do they offer collections of Dredd etc but e-format 200AD and Judge Dredd magazine.
You like Rogue Trooper ? Check out "Jäger" for a storyline from the "Nort" side (I've bought the complete collections of Rogue Trooper this way).

Thanks for the recommendations folks, but I prefer the real books - I'll probably start purchasing the Case Files after I've got all the Tales of Nu-Earth books :)

And on a slightly related note, I finished Judge Hershey from the Citadel range - I'm not entirely satisfied with her eyes, but for the time being, it'll do. Also, as a strange twist of faith, in the lot I'm about to get, there's a Mongoose version of her...which looks better, so she'll either be denoted to a street judge, a veteran judge or maybe a psy-judge. Either way, now I'm well above the 500 points for the recommended campaign game size, so logic dictates I should paint some gangers...but I think I'll finish the three remaining figs on my desk, which will basically let me play Cal's Retinue as well.

And now for Hershey:

Also, thanks for all the compliments, I really appreciate them. Hard to get any kind of reaction other than a "meh" in this GW-filled country.

Very crisp paint jobs, I really like them. I agree with Chris' comments that there is a comic book vibe to them. Good work!

And now for the man himself, Mr. "I cost 625 credits on my own but you can add a Lawmaster for 100 more", Ol' Stoneyface, Judge Joseph Dredd!

Thanks for the compliments again. Sadly this figure's face was...bad. Otherwise a nice fig. Added that bit of paper to the base as it seemed like a good idea...now I'm thinking of getting some generic street clutter to put on the bases. Dropped coke cans, trashbags, etc.

Great painting mate!  :D

And I love the old Citadel Judge Dredd figures, they have so much character. Your painting style really brings out the best of these classic sculpts.

Nice painting.

Not really a fan of the GW style of that period, though somewhere I have a number of their Dredd figures.

It is a bit like TWD, they are styled after (some) of the source material.

Well folks sorry for the lack of updates on the weekend...had a busy Friday, and stumbled upon some Warmodelling UK Paras I just HAD TO do...I might start a thread for my WW2 stuff as well.

Anyway! I almost finished Cal and Slocum, they'll be finished hopefully tomorrow...and my starter is on the way, should be with me next week, so yay!

Postman got something for me :)

I have to say, I really like the figures. They are noticably bigger than the Citadel ones, so I'm not sure if I'll field them together (especially that I have two boxes of the plastic gangers that are like giants in comparison), but I'll get started on them soon...
Title: Re: zirrian's Judge Dredd/2000AD painting blog

Well, since I got the Mongoose figs that are incompatibly larger than the Citadel ones, I've decided to start with them...as a start, 500 points gangs to actually try out the game, then expand from there.

Sadly the Judge box doesn't have too much standard judges...another standard judge with a Lawgiver would have been better. Also, the special weapons judge is a bit...weak. Anyone knows if they made different poses with the same weapons? I'm thinking of converting this chap into a standard judge with a Lawgiver, as none of the two weapons really fit him.

Well, as expected, the last two pics didn't send anyone's heart to race - so here's the first painted judge from the Mongoose/Warlord starter:

He was really nice to paint. I went with a lighter green this time, and I like ot more as it gives a better contrast. The other two judges are basecoated as well, hopefully I'll finish them next week - I have other projects to do, so two figs would make me happy.

One thing...if noone told you that, they are absolutely incompatible with the Citadel figs, which is not a problem, but the Citadel figs will most likely be end up in the shelf as a collection instead of gaming pieces, but as they are fun to paint as well, I'm not that bothered. The Foundry figures are a better match I hope, as they have a whole lot of models I'd love to include.

And for the bragging rights part for today's entry: this week the first "Tales of Nu-Earth" arrived - haven't started reading it yet, but it's a hefty tome. Also, from the dear chap who runs Mighty Miniatures, I'll get a lot of Dredd minis - a Citi Def box, another box of gangers, an exorcist judge, both DeMarco models, Hershey, sky surfer blister, robodogs, sky surfer character, Rico, and so on and so forth. Also, as I found out, Paizo has a few Dredd boxes left in stock for really good prices (10$ for most, Cursed Earth Desperados, Fatties, Sky Surfers, the Angel gang, Holocaust judges, Ape gang)...even with postage, the six boxes cost me approx. 100$ from the US to Hungary. Happy days!

Thanks! A friend at Scenery World Workshop is making 30mm urban bases for me, I'll mount them on those. They are not yet ready, but once they are done and cast, I'll post some pics.

Thank you for the continous encouragement, Ultravanillasmurf!

And as for a small detour...as I purchased two boxes of the Mongoose street gangers (I should probably get some more...), I came to the conclusion that the heads are really bad. Arms seemed okay-ish, but I wanted to be sure, dig into my bits box, and returned with some rifle arms from Warlord's Germans, a bazooka with the relevant arms from the Warlord GIs, and two random GW IG heads to make these:

I think they work pretty well, actually. Not sure if they'll end up in a street gang, or in the citi-def, but I'll probably need to get a few more spare parts from the WW2 kits.

This is a great project! 8) It's nice to see someone else doing Dredd in their own style!

Those plastic are shit. Good work adding the extra bits to hide the bad sculpts! I'm now trying to think if I've got any spare heads to copy your idea. I think GW heads will probably be to bulky! :?

Thanks! Well, depends on the heads - the IG heads look fine on them, as the figures themselves are bigger than GW figures, so the big heroic GW heads look just fine on them. Other than them, Anvil does a lot of useful heads, as well as Victoria, Statesque, Hasslefree (if you're willing to sculpt some hair or headdress), Mad Robot, Kromlech, Maxmini, and I probably forgot to mention a dozen others...

Well, I promised they'll be done this week, and voilá! They are!

So, the two newly finished judges:

Judge Byron with two Lawgivers:

Psi Judge Livingstone:

I admit, her face looks better IRL...

And now a somewhat blurry group pic of the starting group for the Justide Department:

I also made a list for the Gangers - a lvl 1 hero with decent protection (flak jacket I think) and a heavy spit gun plus an axe, a lvl 1 psi user with a pistol, two punks with a pistol and a club, one with a pistol only and one with a shotgun - all have some kind of protection as well. Besides the shotgunner, they are all from the Starter Set, and Mr. Shotgun is again, a kitbash from the plastic gangers. No pics this time.

Been a while, sorry folks. Other stuff distracted me from 2000AD...couldn't even finish the Rogue Trooper anthology I bought  :(

Anyways, Foundry is doing a clearance on their 2000AD minis, get them before they are gone...I ordered all the stuff I need, and hopefully did not forget anything (and of course I hope I won't regret not getting the ABC Warriors), and looking forward getting them. Also I'll need a few more bases in the not too distant future.

Say, why is Foundry dumping the 2000AD range now? Did they lose the licence (or did it expire like with Mongoose) or are there other factors at work?

Post by: zirrian on November 09, 2017, 06:08:13 AM
No idea...but I guess Warlord's hands are in this. Which is...I don't really mind, if they actually release the 2000AD stuff they promised. I'd really like to get the Mongoose Rogue Trooper minis because I was dumb enough not to pledge for their KS.
Title: Re: zirrian's Judge Dredd/2000AD painting blog
Post by: Grimjack on November 09, 2017, 09:42:26 AM
The Foundry range 'licence' was based off a handshake and an email conversation. TWOTS is that Rebellion became aware and let them carry on, but now that Warlord has stumped up the cash for a pukka licence for miniature games based upon the whole of 2000AD, Rebellion have to offer the licensee some protection.

Same thing happened with the BBC, they sent C & D notices once Warlord bought the licence for Doctor Who. Interestingly, it was the BBC who shut the others down, NOT Warlord, who knew the owners of the UK companies and were happy for them to carry on.

Twelve-Gauge Picton - likes long walks on the beach, and if you ask him what's a beach, he'll smak you with the butt of his shotgun.

Kitbashed ganger from the GOMC1 box, Cadian command and Warlord WW2 US infantry. I really like how the flames on his jacket came out.

More than 120 days since the last reply...sorry chaps, been a bit distracted with life :) Finally varnished Rogue from Foundry, not sure about the basing...

Also, Warlord has Strontium Dog on preorder! Seems like the rules will be similar to their current, somewhat primitive rulesets like Dr Who, which is not a bad thing, but I liked the Mongoose rules. So I'll probably port the stuff to there, and try the new rules as well. Looking forward to it, but not sure if I can pick it up during the pre-order unless someone buys something from me, or wants to sponsor my humbleness :P
