Title: Early Franks and Domain of Soissons
Post by: arget8 on August 26, 2017, 10:10:32 PM
I've been working on my Kingdom of Soissons campaign supplement for Dux Brit for a little while now and, while it is still in the infancy stage, I've made some progress towards actually fielding a force of Early Merovingian Franks. As of right now, I only have five converted and primed and one completely painted, but I'm dying to show them off/get some constructive criticism/advice. So here are the minis:

I like the work you,ve done on these and the painted figure is excellent . It's nice to see a different army being fielded. The Old WRG books have a section on them I seem to remember.

Thanks! I'm planning on using a mix of Footsore Goths, Romans, Saxons, and Saxon Minis Saxon Levy. Since the Franks were foederati for the Romans right up until they turned on Syagrius, I figure that they would have probably gotten some Roman equipment. I plan on putting moustaches and/or braids on some Romans and use the Goths with moustaches. Apparently, the Franks tended to eschew beards for luscious moustaches, so I wont have many with beards, but I'm sure some of the less professional warriors would have beards. This gives me a lot of room for variety with poses and equipment, which will help them look a little more ragtag than the Kingdom of Soissons Gallo-Romans, who I plan on looking a lot like Richard's. The Elites will have some semblance of uniformity, the warriors will likely have nicer clothes (Red stripes/decorations) but less consistently uniformed, and the levies will be a complete mix and match of clothes. Similar to how I'm doing my Romano-Brits, but with a more Germanic influence (lots of stripes and/or checks).

Thanks for posting these guys!!!!!

Those conversions look really, really good. That's going to give a very nice variety to your war bands.

The painted figure really appeals to me. That 'stache really sets him apart as a Frank and is a really nice focal point on the figure, I find it draws my eyes to his face first and clothing second, which I think is your intent... drawing attention to his "frankishness."

I very much love Tancredo's Arthurians, those are fantastic paint jobs (especially his shields which are kind of my "thing"). My own style is a bit more gritty and subdued and that is what it seems like you are going for here. Yet when it comes to Franks, they seemed to have been the most gaudy and colourful Germanics of this period. So, to keep with the gritty style, I find that there is a balancing act when it come to the Franks and I think you are getting that here.

For instance, I've read that they were known for their colourful leggings and you've got the leggings in green. The tunic is a great contrast and complements the shield design very well. And his scarf "pops." So great job on the painted figure, I like him a lot. :-*

Just last week, I got a new book on early Frankish clothing that had been out of print for awhile and I was on the waiting list. It was just republished. I don't know if you speak German, but these are Heere & Waffen books. They're kind of a German version of Osprey. Even if you don't speak German, the plates I feel are extremely helpful and makes the books worth having, especially for a project like this. So I'll suggest these two as sources:

Strassmeir, Andreas and Andreas Gagelmann. Das Fränkische Heer der Merowingerzeit: Franken, Alamannen, Burgunden, Thüringer und Bajuwaren 5.-8. Jahrhundert n. Chr., Teil 1: Bekleidung, Trachtzubehör, Persönliche Ausrüstung, Rüstung. Heere & Waffen 19. Zeughaus Verlag, Berlin 2017. ISBN: 978-3-938447-67-3

Strassmeir, Andreas and Andreas Gagelmann. Das Fränkische Heer der Merowingerzeit: Franken, Alamannen, Burgunden, Thüringer und Bajuwaren 5.-8. Jahrhundert n. Chr., Teil 2: Schild und Schwert. Heere & Waffen 19. Zeughaus Verlag, Berlin 2014. ISBN 978-3-938447-68-0

The first one deals with clothing and the second with weapons. As I said, even if you don't read German they may prove fruitful for this project due to the illustrations alone. I don't have the third book yet as I recall it deal with the late Merowinger period and don't need it for my own 5th century project. But these two I find helpful as the relevant Osprey books may have simply one plate for the Franks as they're trying to cover as many different Germanic tribes of the period as possible.

Looking forward to more updates! :D

You want a lot of throwing axes, don't you? Those say "Frank" loud and clear. I think I also remember reference to green cloaks with red borders (in addition to snappy stripy tunics).

They look nice!

Might I also suggest these figures from Crusader's range: Early Saxons and Franks (http://www.crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=4&sub=63&page=1)

These are the figures I'll be using to oppose my Romans when they're finished.
They have a very distinctive look that sets them apart from Footsore and Saxon.
Swabian knots, braids and a healthy mix of shaven, bearded and moustachioed heads.
Along with spangenhelms, something I haven't seen too much of.

Thanks a lot guys! In all honesty, this is the first time that I've received style compliments for my painting, so thank you Richard!

I'll check those books out too, thanks Richard!

Franciscas are coming eventually, I just need to make them. I have a Footsore Horsa or Hengist as one of my Lords, so there's one axe, but I'd like to get some sculpted up and casted so I can just have them carrying them tucked into their belts.

For the rules, I'm thinking that only Warriors and Elites can use Franciscas and will fight more like the Saxons after throwing them (ferociously charging into the fray), whereas their levy will fight more like the Romans (staying in shield walls). Still trying to figure it out though.

At this point in time, I recall hearing that the Swabian knots were out of fasion, but I could be wrong. I would almost welcome being wrong because several of the Saxon Minis Saxon Levies have Swabian knots and if I don't have to replace them with the Frankish braids and shave, that would be cool. A lot of them are completely hairy and wont really fit though. I'm willing to have beards on guys if I can put the Frankish hair on them, but otherwise they will stay Saxons.

Gripping Beast has Franciscas, take a look in their weapons section. A few of the Franks in my thread are carrying/throwing them.

Do keep us posted as the army progresses.

Getting the stripes even and the same size is a pain but they do look good when finished.

And here are my Romano-Brits/Gallo-Romans so far! I plan on doing the large majority as relatively generic Roman-types so that they can serve a dual purpose. The lords and elites will be entirely unique for each faction along with probably 4-6 of each army with more unique troops to mix with the rest of the generics. As of right now, I only have British painted up, but besides the two elites with black shields and the lords, they are all generic enough to serve as either.

The unique men for the British will have more browns and check patterns while the Gallo Romans will have some stripes to show their Germanic influences.

Here come the Romans!

As you can see, I've made some serious progress towards finishing the Roman contingent, just a couple more lords, at least 10 more elites, 24 or so warriors (For generic, British and Gallo-Romans), and a handful of levy. However, they come along quicker than the Franks as there is no converting really, just Footsore figures straight out of the box. I'm also planning on doing Saxons, but only after I make serious headway on the Romans and Franks.

Let me know what you guys think!

I,m loving this thread. It's a good idea to paint generic types for the basic units ( wherever possible ) and make the Leaders " stand out or pop " as the Yanks say , to make them easily identifiable for the various tribes | factions. Keep 'em coming .

Those are looking good. There's nothing like getting an army finally painted, out of the lead pile, and ready to play. Keep'em coming.

BTW, I forgot to add, if you are still looking for weapons Gripping Beast also has angons, those particularly frankish heavy throwing spears which work off of the same principle as the old roman pila.

It also looks like you are converting a lot of Germanics specifically into Franks. If you are doing it for the sake of doing conversions, that's great. If you are doing it because you couldn't find Franks, as gostgost said, Wargames Foundry has some Franks. Gripping Beast (which make up most of my Franks) also has "Really Frankish Franks." They're kinda hidden on the website but do a search and they pop up. They also come with a multitude of weapons including franciscas and angons. That may save you time.

Cool little project. Always nice to see someone venturing into theatres beyond the British Isles.
There may be other people working on Dux Britanniarum supplements for the continent. Cannot remember a Soissons project in particular, but perhaps it's worth to do a quick online search or ask on the Lardies forum?

Thanks for the comments and info guys! I appreciate it.

As to the other Franks, part of it is that I really like the Footsore minis. Part of it is that I did not, in fact, know that there were more Franks out there that suited the period. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of the open handed minis and I can't really get a good look at either company's offerings. I've found precisely one grainy picture of the Newline one, which don't look half bad, and the Gripping Beast pics are too small to really get a good look. Since they are being sold in a large pack like that, I'm a little wary of dropping a bunch of money on sculpts I don't like AND hands that will need to be fixed. I'm not a huge fan of Soapy's sculpts and the pictures aren't good enough to determine whether they are Soapy or Colin. If they are Colin's sculpts, I'll probably pick them up as the sculpts would be good enough for the conversion work to be worth it, but if they are Soapy sculpts, I don't really feel I could ever be happy enough with the minis to justify the work.

Richard, if you have any pictures of your Franks, I'd love to see them so I can get a better measure of the figs themselves. I am perfectly willing to pic them up to supplement my force if they turn out to look decent from a little closer up.

I have a few spare Newline Franks ( 3 or 4)  which I'm never going to use again. (duplicates)  Send me your snail- mail address via pm and I'll pop them in a padded envelope. That way they you can see them 'in the flesh' and these poor chaps will then be having a good home at least. :)

I should hopefully have a few more to show off soon. Next on the painting queue are some elites, but I've got some more levy and the archers started and also a Lord.

Watch this space!

Some elites on their way soon, I'm about to give them their wash and highlights.

Here are the first three elite Frankish Warriors. I'm planning on doing a lot of stripes on these guys to really emphasize their Germanic heritage and I'm pretty pleased with the results so far. I will also be doing some with some head swaps so I can do a couple with their distinct hairstyle in my next batch of elites. I could use an opinion on how to represent the regular warriors, as I usually use guys with just helmets, but that means that I wont be able to show off the hair. But if I leave the helmets off, they will look like Levy. What do you guys think? Maybe have them holding angons in their shield hands?

Very effective technique on those tunics. I would do a mix of helmets and hairstyles for the warrior units, to distinguish them from levy. And maybe duller colours for the levy.

Not a bad idea, I think I'll take it. I may also put angons in the warriors shield hands for the warriors without helmets. That should be helpful to me to remember because I would like to have the hairstyle for all the units. Below is how I will break them down then:

Characters and Elites: Mail and helmet/hairstyle
Warriors: Helmets and hair (with angons) and brighter colors
Levy: Duller colors and hair

Looking good arget.

Glad you got those Newlines. I've been having technical difficulties again with getting photos taken, but those Franks you saw in my photos were GB. I'll try to get some photos of them taken when we get back from holiday on the 6th but it may be too late for you by then if not already now.

I like those elites, keep them coming.

I've got to finish up my comitatus and my Gallo-Romans are done (horses are painted based and flocked, just the riders to do) but, thanks to Byrnoth's post, I got distracted with some 10mm that he inspired me to order (I've been able to pop out one stand/unit a day and almost have a nice sized Italian field army done in two weeks, wow, what a great scale!)

Thanks guys! Here are a few more guys. First up we have the last two of the generic Roman types. Bringing me up to twelve. From here I'll be adding six to twelve each of Romano-British specific (with check patterns) and Gallo-Roman specific (with stripes and more Roman looking clothes). After the first two, it's the start of my Gallo-Romans with the first two warriors complete.

Here are the next four Frankish warriors. They are all converted from Footsore miniatures. The red and white guy is a converted Roman and the rest are from the Goth line. I think I'm starting to get the hang of the hair now, but these pictures really show off the flaws in my painting of the flesh. Oh well, my goal is continual improvement. By the time I get around to doing the Irish and Picts, I'd like to have a solid process that doesn't take ages.

Ok guys, I'm trying my hand at some more serious sculpting and conversions here. Two more Franks to start with, one from a Goth and one from an Attecotti Pict. Both minis are Footsore. I'm hoping to have them and some other guys done shortly, but I have to wait to basecoat these until they're cured. I'm struggling with delicate parts, like the belt buckle and braids. I would appreciate any pointers that people have.

I have not seen the Old Glory ones. However, if GamesPoet is correct in saying that they are Carolingians, they are about 500 years too late for my use. These guys are meant to be early Merovingians/Salians around the time of Clovis I, circa 450-500 AD.

True!

It seems the Franks being referred to are listed on Old Glory's site under "Hellenistic Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome", under "Fall of Rome" and "Franks" ...

So here are the next Franks, finally. Only one archer is unconverted, the rest have a conversion of some sort or another. The hairy ginger started as a Attecotti. All figures are Footsore minis. I've got the last of the Roman Levy on the table now, hopefully they should be done in the next week or less, depending on whether I get distracted by more Franks or not.

If you are interested in seeing it, or play-testing it, let me know and I'll send it your way! It contains updated Romans and brand new forces and campaign rules for the Franks and Visigoths.

Back again with some more Roman levy and a Gallo-Roman warrior, all Footsore minis. I've been improving my skills, thanks to the Footsore Friday videos on their Facebook. Also look at all those chickens! Let me know what you guys think!

Those are looking very, very good. I'm still getting around to reading those rules now that things are settling down after the holidays and my father-in-law's funeral. I really like the look of your guys there, shields are looking great, too.

Thanks Richard. The pictures are a little crap, but I'm pretty pleased with them. Next up are more Franks and the Gallo-Roman elites. No rush on the reading. I'm interested in what you think about them, though.

Naw, the pictures convey your minis. I like the Frankish tunic in this batch, it pops.

I'm adding a very small allied (or enemy, depending) contingent to my Gallo-Romans. It goes back to an idea I had from the discussion in my own Gallo-Roman thread. I'm doing a very small land-owner force of household troops (unarmored spearmen and archers) and an armoured barbarian mercenary unit in the land-owner's pay. Waiting on some BTD Late Roman figures right now.

Actually, they're pretty much too many as is (unless used for a skirmish game) but one does need some units to move around on the table top. I had a patrician and his wife already painted as well as a villa built. I also had an arthurian personality from Artisan that I just painted, who has a punch-me-in-the-face look about him, for the evil land-owning son: doesn't know much about military matters but he sure looks snazzy in his kit.

I'll post them as a separate project, but it fits in line with this theme.

That sounds like a good plan Richard. I like the idea of the land-owner troops as well. It fits right in with the theory that these land owners evolved into feudal lords over time.

Here are some of the Domain of Soissons Comanipulares. I know that the shields are for Legio V Macedonica, but I liked the look. After painting them up, they look a little 'merica, but I though that the blue cloaks give them a wealthy look along with the bleached tunics and red hems. I'm pretty pleased with these guys and will have to paint a few more up soon. Next up will be more Franks.

Title: Re: Early Franks and Kingdom of Soissons: A bunch more Franks!
Post by: arget8 on February 02, 2018, 01:01:57 AM
I've finished the next batch of Franks, three Warriors from Newline with Footsore shields and four Footsore Goths and Saxons to use for Levy. Only 16 total Franks left now!

In other news, I should have the second draft of my Dux Brit campaign supplement finished in the next week or so. As of now there are fully fleshed out forces for the Gallo-Romans, Franks, and Visigoths. I'm mulling over the idea of adding Bacaudae, Alemanni, Burgundians, and Armoricans. I'm also thinking about incorporating the Saxons raiding from the channel, as I've recently learned that they likely shifted focus to Britain only after the Franks overran Soissons. If anyone is interested and you have not already asked me for a copy, shoot me a PM.

My Gallo Romans starting force is now complete! Other than the eventual cavalry models that I'll be adding to the force and future reinforcements, I'm done! These are the four characters for the force, three true Romans and a loyal Frankish champion.

Hi all, if you didn't already know, I have a blog for my wargaming. It's been dead for over a year, but I figured that since I'm full steam ahead again in the hobby, especially with this project, I would revive it. Currently, I'm working on posting subjects regarding my campaign supplement and other Dux Britinniarum projects. I'm trying to hold myself to at least one post a week, which will either be hobby work or rules centered. I've posted about my return to the hobby and also the introduction to the supplement itself.

Stop on by if you'd like to follow the progress of the supplement!

Thanks for the comments gents, I appreciate the support!

Here are the last of the Frankish starting force. I'm totally done with the basic forces for the Romans and the Franks now, with only the Visigoths left. One thing I'm trying to do is make my non-Roman forces have dual use to decrease the amount of painting and buying that I have to do. What this means is that I've used some Picts, Saxons, Goths, and Romans for the Frankish Levy which will decrease the amount of painting I need to do, especially for the Goths and Saxons.

I played a game of Dux Brit over the weekend while at Cold Wars and got to try out the forces for my Domain of Soissons campaign supplement. This battle, which was the first for both me and my opponent Caleb, pitted the Franks of Clodwig the Red (played by yours truly) and the Gallo-Romans of Honorius Sextimanius (played by Caleb) in the Raid on a Village scenario. More on the blog.

Was it as painful to move the troops on the teddy bear fur grass as it looks?
Title: Re: Early Franks and Domain of Soissons
Post by: arget8 on March 19, 2018, 08:24:29 PM
Thanks!

As to the fur, not really. I use 1" washers for bases, so that keeps most minis from being too top-heavy. The mat is dyed, rather than painted, so it's not as stiff as most. However, I do plan on getting movement trays to speed things up, which will have the added bonus of helping with any potential balance issues.

So, it's been a while, but moving halfway across the country may have had something to do with it.

Clodwig the Red returned to the Domain of Syagrius to loot and pillage the lands of the Romans at Historicon. After getting an early jump, the Franks were able to hold off the Romans with their warriors and elites, while the levies looted. The Franks were only able to find one piece of loot, but due to the limits of the terrain, that was all that was needed. Despite the best efforts of the Gallo-Romans, the Franks were able to gain a +7 victory!

So, it's been a while and it appears that many of my pictures have disappeared. Damn facebook and it's transient nature. I'll get around to updating the links in the next few days.

In other news, since the last post, I went to Historicon and ran a Dux Britanniarum game using my Last of the Romans campaign supplement. Most of the end of June and beginning of July was spent frantically building and painting terrain for the game, so I just didn't have the motivation to post updates while I did so. Below, you will find some of my pictures from the game, which I was too wrapped up in running the game to write a good battle report, which I regret.

I also spent the three months after that game massively adding to my terrain collection. I was unable to run my planned game at Fall In, due to a car accident on my way to set the game up, which totaled my car and severely damaged my minis. However, I do have some terribly lit photos of a test run of the game with some of my unfinished terrain, which you will find below.

I plan on running the same game at Cold Wars, but during the next few months I'll need to repair all of my minis. Not a single one came away unscathed, but most of them should be salvageable. After that game I hope to have an actual battle report for you guys and not just pictures.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm working on fixing them all now. Most of them should be salvageable, just some repainting. I've also updated all of the pictures to the best of my ability by hosting them on my blog, which has had some new updates since my last link, so if you want to check it out, here is the link: https://wartoendallblogs.blogspot.com/ (https://wartoendallblogs.blogspot.com/)

good to hear you're getting over the accident, hobby-wise.
Games look brilliant.
