I've had a copy of Matakishis' CROM! rules for some time now but never got round to doing anything with them, but this thread by Angel Barracks http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101875.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=101875.0) caught my imagination and inspired me to start my own desert fantasy project.
I've painted a few test miniatures, mostly copplestone barbarians so far but I'm planning a number of factions, more of which later.
To start with I decided to make a 2' x 2' board with some basic scatter terrain, buildings and details will follow afterwards.
Some plastic palm trees from ebay (eBay item number:281890140065)
These have been mounted on randomly shaped 2mm mdf bases, holes having been drilled and the palms stuck in place with hot glue prior to the liberal application of gloop and sand
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/1512_31_08_17_2_34_38_1.jpg)
Pieces of pine tree bark and lumps of group cork have been used for small rocky outcrops - these will count as rough ground and 'spawn points' for the baddies and random encounters
mounted on randomly shaped 2mm mdf bases which were then covered in gloop (a mix of brown decorators caulk, waterproof PVA glue, water and sand)
This was then covered in a mix of sand, grit and small cork granules while still wet - the final step was to spray with a mist of water to wet the surface and draw the PVA into the sand mix to improve adhesion.
The base board, an old TSS terrain square, was given the same gloop and sand/grit treatment.
Everything was left to dry for 24 hours before painting.
Once it was all thoroughly dried a heavy dry brushing of sand coloured matt emulsion followed by a light dry brushing of an off white matt emulsion was applied to everything. The rocks were also given a light dry brush of a grey matt emulsion.
So the base board and the first of the scatter terrain is now almost done. The palms need their fronds painting and dry brushing to get rid of the plasticky shine and to bring out the details, and everything needs some grass and 'growies' adding in appropriate places.
Next up will be some finished figures and some larger rock formations, and a few buildings.

Looking good, by Crom!
-
Nice work! 15mm really has a lot going for it.
-
Would also do nicely for a caveman/Lost World kinda thing. Copplestone Picts also make nice cavemen, BTW.
Great work!
-
Gah, another one capable of painting very convincing pupils at 15mm level... Those are some splendid skin tones, and that board looks like it will be a treat to play on.
Great work!
-
Awesome! Simply awesome.
-
Best 15mm Crom terrain ever! ;D :D
-
Wow! Great start mate! :o
What kinda buildings are you thinking of?
-
Looks great! Superb painting on those barbarians - and terrific terrain!
Crom's a fantastic game.
-
Yay, another Cromster! AB seems to have really kicked off a little Crom renaissance. You've got a great result here, looks fantastic.
-
Good work Mark, keep it up, spread the word!
-
Thanks for the comments and feedback

I've got them on the shopping list already :)

Starting off with some simple adobe types made of blue foam with a filler coating - prototypes in progress:

excuse the bad phone pic.
Good work Mark, keep it up, spread the word!
I will - I've heard rumours of a Deluxe Crom! and/or a Monster Manual, are you working on it?
-

Slowly. Deluxe CROM will be a print book and include a bestiary. Creating files for a print book is time consuming :(

...but this does mean we will get finally and someday a CROM deluxe book?!
Well those are good news! Now we just need Mr. Copplestone to finish his 15mm Barbarica series...
-
Simple but effective.
And decorator's caulk in your gloop... You dangerous maverick innovator you! (I'm definitely going to try that. I have tubes and tubes of the wretched stuff...
Are you actually going to leave those mould lines on your Chinese palm tree trunks though?
;) :D
And yes, I did give Dean my address... How many do I need?

I like to live on the edge, or sometimes just over it - the brown caulk helps with the foundation colour too

Certainly not, I do have standards man, I'll be taking a scalpel to them shortly. I just wanted to get all the bases done at the same time.
And yes, I did give Dean my address... How many do I need?
Depends how much you want to do, a few barbarians as characters and a dozen or so brigands would get you started.

Painted and based the first five figures:
I've a pair of barbarian archers, Brin and Bolk, who will feature as lesser heroes
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/1512_04_09_17_8_01_34_2.jpg)
A pair of barbarian shield maidens, Shika and Olgrin, also as lesser heroes
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/1512_04_09_17_8_01_34_3.JPG)
And the first of the baddies, Wyn the Toothless, a necromancer and cultist
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/29/1512_04_09_17_8_01_34_0.jpg)
All figures are from the Copplestone fantasy range.
-
Fabulous stuff! Those copplestone figures look a joy to paint up and your fleshtones are really good, as is the freehand on the shield.
The simple desert/sand coloured bases also show off the model, hmmm, the more sandy bases I see the more I think I'll switch to that colour on my own figures.
-
They are a triumph. As good as any 28s in both sculpting and brushwork. Looking forward to playing this ;D
-
Terrific! I particularly like the red-haired lady.
-
Am very, very impressed Mark. 8)
-
Looking good 8)

At the risk of hijacking my own thread and turning into another LAF 3D printer discussion - which I really don't want to do - I've been playing with Tinkercad to produce some formers for scenery items.
In this case the items in question are architectural shapes for a cultist altar that will be part of a larger temple terrain piece
The pictures show the prints straight off the printer without any clean up but as I plan to render these with a plaster/pva mix I'm not too fussed about the print lines.
I'm not convinced that I've got the size right so I'm reprinting it again at 150%,

Spiral stair component printed at 150% depth and width

Great oiece of scenery. But you know: He'll kill you. Thulsa will kill you!
-
Nice scenery, but I agree, bigger is better ! Looking forward to next post :)

And here is the bigger altar - I think it works better but the Snake head statue on top now needs to be reworked too.

Yep,altar looks better, rather than reworking the snake head statue perhaps the addition of a plinth or spacer thingy under it would suffice, giving it more height and presence ? Just a thought :)
-
Excellent Mark, didn't know you had a printer.
I agree with Keith about a plinth for the snake; it'd set it off. 8)
-
You did an excellent job on those teeny tiny figures! The snake alter is shaping up nicely as well.
-Michael
-
Where do the batteries go? ;) :D
All coming together nicely ;D
-
Awesome work, I like the caulk idea
-
Great stuff!
I'd probably go for a bigger snake head statue, but worth trying plinths &c to see how it looks first.
Those Copplestone 15s are the business. Hope to see more of them...
-

My thoughts too, there's going to be enough space under the mouth for the priest to be able to stand.
Here's the 3D render, its printing now.

I'll post pictures later if the print comes out ok
-
Ah that looks the business - like it's grown out of the temple :-*
-
Here's the printed altar and cobra head, now all I need to do is render it, add some details and then paint it.
-
That's a bit good!
-
Wow, now that's what I call a snake cult altar :o
Great work,certainly does the business.
When I look at these minis I have to keep reminding myself they're not 28mm,lovely sculpts and paint job :-*
-
Fantastic - looking forward to seeing this painted.
-
Wonderful. Really makes you want to make it to snake cult worship this week!

Research material arrived today ;)

Ooh! Conan the Destroyer,my favourite of the franchise.
I love the part in the tomb, oops spoiler alert, where Conan says "enough talk" and throws a dagger at one of the priests, then there follows an epic swordfight through the tunnels accompanied by a thumping soundtrack, awesome :)

Going to try some speed painting on my Copplestone wolves:
So far I've cleaned the up and primed them all over with Halfords grey etch primer, then given them a spray of Army Painter Bleached Bone but only from a single direction so that it just catches the undersides.
Next up, some washes of brown and black, followed by an overall dry brush and some detailing on the legs and faces.
This is what I'm hoping to get a representation of:

I am watching this thread with great interest. You have done an absolutely superb job so far.
-
Love those Copplestone minis!
-
Wolf pack painted. I used a mix of thinned paints and inks over the grey and sand basecoat before detailing the faces. Pretty quick method, excluding drying time between stages, each figure took me around 10 minutes including basing.

Those look excellent - very wolf-like. The detail on the faces really sets them off.
-
Great to see wolves in genuine wolf colours!
-
They look great - I'll be stealing that!
-
Nice work on those, colours look great :)
-
Very good, splendid brushwork they really look the business, especially given they are so tiny ;D
-
Those have come out a treat, just the ticket.
-
They look great Mark.
-
Nice :)
-
Great looking wolves!
-
Thanks for all the replies.
Next part of the project is some more terrain - an ancient tomb to rob or to provide a refuge from hungry wolves
Basic shape with the stones in place, the odd bits of polystyrene sticking out are keeping the stones in place and will be gone before texturing:

The wolves are the dogs wotsits 8)
How big is the tomb? Is the little access point at the front base sized for 15mm minis?
-

It's for 15mm, so the opening is sized accordingly - I'll include a figure in the next photo for reference.
-
Great progress.... :o
Like the wolves...the tomb is very cool too.

I was just trying to get a handle on size as IIRC your board is 2’ sq

Is it possible to balance 15mm minis on the stones? The tomb must be climbable!

The tomb is coming along a treat :)

taken before I covered in in gloop and sand. Just need it to dry out then I can paint it and add some vegetation.

It will be climbable - I deliberately made in in layers so there'd be places for the figures to stand.
-
Impressive work! Love it!
-
Wow hey nice little show you have got here!
-
Wow! It really looks gorgeous. Now those wolves do look pretty big, thank goodness Arnold was hunted by normal-sized ones. lol
