Title: M113's Tag and Westwind are they compatible?
Post by: Dan on March 31, 2009, 11:12:04 AM
Just got an itch to buy something so I was thinking about Vietnam yet again .  ::)Having ruled out Eureka as not having any US forces I started looking at TAG and Westwind .
I presume the figures would be slightly different sizes but are the 113's the same scale ?
I've also been looking on Ebay for M48's but didnt see any M113's advertised .
I have some trees and statues which should be suitable already so terrain should not be a difficult issue . :)
I may not buy anything yet but at least I will have a better idea for when I do.
Thanks.

I believe West Wind just sells the Corgi vehicles for their Vietnam range (at least they used to). If they do have their own model for the M113 I expect it will be 1:50 like their WW2 vehicles. At any rate I would recommend going for the TAG offering. I've picked up four different WW vehicle kits and all have been poor.

I thought the Westwind vehicles were 1/60th whihc would make them quite a bit smaller than 1/50 or the other ranges such as Sloppy etc whihc are 1/56th

TAGs m113
L 90mm 1/54
W 50mm 1/53,7
H 40mm 1/55
so, 1/54 ish, looks good, only trouble is that the sideskirts don't come off

The westwind mortar carrier is listed as 1/55, the westwind ww2 vehicles are supposed to be 1/60
there's also force of arms, they have loads of different m113 variants in 1/58
and a M48 in 1/56

Oops, I meant 1/60th. Where is the red faced emoticon when I need it? :-[

Thanks mate thats a really exact answer  :)
I was of course referring to the Mortar Carrier in the West Wind Range so was hoping the two ranges would mix ok , and it looks like they will.

Go 20mm Dan! It's truly the sweet candy for 'Nam gaming.
Here are some 1/72 Trumpeter M113's that are WIP waiting for stowage and a few other details. SHQ Crews. No biggie removing the side skirts with these, just a little fill and sand.

Tempted? No mortar carrier though... But I'm tempted to do a scratch conversion 'cause these are pretty simple.

someone else asked about it a while back too so :)

scalechoice,
just consider how much tablespace you've got, even huey B's are Big in 1/48 (there are no 1/56 ones so far)

Sizewise is not a problem as I have a 10x6 table to play on at home  :) however the problem comes when I want to play at a club and need to move everything .

I have grabbed an Italeri M113 with ACAV parts from a Lead model? (Skytrex maybe) to get a feel for the scale . It just feels a little light and brittle on first impression .
I painted it a long time ago and gave all my unmade models and Revell figures to my nephew. I think I will try and improve its look before I buy anything.

yep i have a 8*6 myself so went for 28mm, or, i went for 28mm and then built a bigger table  lol

what other people use might be the biggest issue, unless you do what i do and buy both sides :)

Yep , I'm Mad too and buy both sides  lol
I'm thinking of 28mm as I can reuse trees for other games rather than starting from scratch again. I think I may have gotten a mate interested  :D

Vietnam War skirmish rules from Darby Eckles at Two Hour Wargames. Great period flavour; covers all the stuff you expect to find from booby-traps and tunnels to snake'n'nape. Campaign system, too.

Well I had a good think about do I really want to do this as I have had several stalled attempts to do Vietnam starting with some MiniTank M113's and Tanks . I then bought some lead items , Platoon 20 I think . I then got some Plastic M113's and Hueys with some Revell figs . None of the projects went ahead . :-[
So I went ahead and bought some Vietcong deals from Dave on Ebay . 94 figures and mortars . So it looks like I'm committed this time . I hope he lists some US troops soon. :)
