I am looking for a modern set of wargaming rules to play 2000+ warfare, urban terrorism and such.
Any recommendations? I already know Black Ops.
-
Spectre Operations, Skirmish Sangin and Operation Squad Modern spring to mind.
-
I do not have any rules to hand, but:
"The basic squad size is eight regulars, with various additional sections (HMG, sniper etc). The rules have army lists for Royal Marines, SAS, US Marines, US Delta force, Italian Bersaglier, Iraqi regulars and Insurgents. Additional lists are available for various periods on the web site. There are currently no rules for vehicles (there is a HMMWV on the website) but you could use the Operation Squad vehicle rules."

There is a "Song of"-Game called Flying Lead (+Supplem. Minds and Hearts): http://www.ganeshagames.net/index.php?cPath=1_10&osCsid=8sh5jbd0s1fptgftok5tnesam6

Have you played/tested these yourself? Any thoughts on them?

I have had some good fun playing Oscar Sierra Charlie from evilbearwargames. It is small skirmish action with 5-10 miniatures a side. The rules are dead simple and leaning towards cinematic in style.

Played it at Tactica. It is worth a look. But like all these "Song of"-Games I think they are very raw and simple. In the moment I tend to BlackOps or Spectre Operation for modern Games. Skirmish Sangin is too much bookkeeping for me. I wasn't a memeber of the mathematical club in school.
One system i have forgotten: Victory Decision: Future Version (I am sorry, Agis). Works also for modern battles.

What are you up to, Jan-Willem? 8)

I like Skirmish Sangin for its roleplaying game approach... yes, there's quite a deal of bookkeeping etc but then again it can be used with just few minis per side and there can be "character" improvement in it. Then for bigger clashed it becomes indeed quite a heavy system.

For a more RPG Skirmish it would try to use the old classic traveller. It was - in lot of things - easy and playable.

There is a good comparison of rules on Michael Charge`s blog http://hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2016/11/21/the-great-big-modern-wargaming-rules-comparison/

There is always Twilight 2000 (in its various forms).

Thank you all for the input! SPECTRE sounds the most promising to me. I think I will go that way.

I was going to say SPECTRE for the resolution mechanics and gear, PLUS the Black Ops' STEALTH RULES and SCENARIOS that are easily transported to ANY game system! :) (and the perfect excuse to build SIX different and gorgeous game tables with lots of scenery! :D)
Please let us know about your progresses in the "Modern" field! ;)

Brent Spivey's 'The Battlefield' from bombshell games looks promising, though its not my bag.

I will! Especially as I already own Black Ops and SPECTRE is on its way!

My own set, Wars of Insurgency, is completed and I've ordered the proof from the printer to make sure there are no mistakes. I expect to receive it this coming week. Once I've looked over it, I will announce its official release.
In Insurgency, players control 3-5 squads of a size from 3-12 miniatures, or one to several vehicles. It is man-to-man skirmish, with each figure being one soldier. I ran it four times at Historicon in July, and the players all seemed to enjoy it. Check out some pics here on my blog:

Feel free to ask any questions about how it plays or its design...

We use Buck Surdu's excellent Combat Patrol rules for modern gaming. These are very innovative, all of the complexity of data look ups, charts, probabilities are built into the action deck, that is used for small arms, he, a/t, melee, morale resolution. Core rules are WW2 based, with a stack of free to download supplements for gaming in the modern era. Check out our recent write up of our Wild Geese game on this forum, or take a look here for details of rules: http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Categories/Combat_Patrol (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Categories/Combat_Patrol)

My problem as a 15mm gamer is, that a lot of rule sets in the modern era are to detailed. I need markers for lying, kneeing diffrent wound status and so on.
This is ok on an 28mmm table/figues but in 15mm...
I loved the old Ambush Alley rules, they were a little bit abstract sometimes, but I had all the modern stuff/hardware rules like drones for example.
And it was easy to get new people into it on conventions for example.
-
Well, Wars of Insurgency does not require that. Your one fig will do just fine. I play in 20mm, but it will work for any scale.
