A few years back I started collecting a few Tallarn to put together a small force - a small lot here and a small lot there got me about a platoon sized force... and then those lots got fewer and further between and I more or less gave up because it looked like it would be just too expensive to put together any reasonable sized force of them. My diminutive collection collected dust and remained largely unpainted.
Then last week a stumbled across a huge lot of them for a not-so-unreasonable price and snapped it up!
So I thought I best start painting some of the ones I already had!
This is the first section of Tallarn Infantry.
The new lot arrived yesterday..
This is the entire force. (The miniatures that was sprayed khaki are the new ones, the ones primed black - or painted 0 are ones I already had).
Now to get some paint on the rest of them!
For 8th edition the force will look something like this:
HQ
Company Commander
2x Platoon Commander
2x Commissar
Troops
10x Infantry Squads
Elites
3x Command Squads
4x Special Weapon Squads (2x Melta, 2x Plasma)
Fast Attack
2x Scout Sentinels
1x Roughriders
Heavy Support
5x Heavy Weapon Squads (2x Las Cannon, 2x Autocannon, 1x Heavy Bolter)
All in one great big "Brigade Detachment"
-
Aah captain Al'raham, I got 6 or 7 of him in one of the old lead sales, all gone to ebay now along with the rest of my tallarns, yours are looking very good though.
-
Fantastic - the old guard minis really hold up. So much more interesting than the blasted Cadians.
-
Lovely job - love the old Tallarns
-
Very good.
The Tallarn were the best of the second generation Imperial Guard.
Many years ago I used them as Orlocks for Necromunda, more recently my local FLGS kept replacing the Tallarn box everytime I bought one.
-
That's alot of Tallarns. The ones you've painted look the business.
Now find some mumaks or whatever they're called. That really would finish off an already splendid force
-
Tallarn was my first 40K love!
-
Nice army indeed
-
Lovely stuff. Always nice to see classic metal Guard armies being worked on.
-
Best Tallarns I done ever seen. Excellent.
-
Thanks everyone!
I finished up a few more figures to make a Command Section for the Platoon Commander I painted, oh, seven years ago!?
Platoon Commander and Platoon Command Section.
I wanted the Platoon Command Section to stand out a bit from the rest of the platoon - but maybe not QUITE so much as the Platoon Commander himself - so I went with black head scarves and fancy knives (like the Platoon Commander) but the rest of the uniform is the same as the regular infantry.
These are the only others I'd painted previously - two converted Tallarn Commissars.
There are a few more pictures on my blog:

-
Excellent.
-
I remember seeing your artizan not Lawerence on the internet ,I actually ordered him to convert into sci fi ,he got damaged when my toddler stood on the toolbox my stuffs stored in,an flipped it over.
I think he's not got a RT las pistol to replace the bolt pistol, toolbox is now up in the loft lol
-
Very cool. Keep it up!
-
Astra Milliwhatnow?
lovely Imperial Guard models. those metals were so far far far superior to todays plastic Guardsmen.
-
Thank you all for your comments!
Astra Milliwhatnow?
I know, right? Was that a trademark thing that lead to the shift in terminology? Guard, Astra Militarum, whatever they're called - they're still poor bloody footsloggers in a grim dark future or eternal war...
-
Everything is moving to fully trademarked (hence the renaming of the pixies etc...).
-
Looking good. They are my favourite imperial guard army and have been building mine for a few years now
-
Hi Tim I forgot to ask how much smaller is the artizan miniature than the old Tallarn guard?
-

I'd say they're of similar height. The figure he's standing next to in the picture is actually a GW imperial guard officer figure that I converted.

-
Great stuff, many years ago I also had a Tallarnban ;) force (Much like alot of commenting here it seems).
A week before GW had a surprise limited splash release of Tallarn Roughriders I went and sold the lot which annoyed me as the Tallarn Rough Riders are rather tasty and if knew they were on the way I would never had sold, still could have been worse I guess hehe.
-

That's interesting I never realised other one was GW,
The vostroyans I have are lot bigger than him I think?
-
That's interesting I never realised other one was GW,
Yeah it was a Steel Legion officer
(https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/600x620/99060105248_SteelLegionOfficerPowerSwordPistolNEW01.jpg)
I got it off eBay and someone had tried to do a head-swap that didn't work, so I added a head scarf and called him a Tallarn Commissar!
-
:o that's a great conversion :-*
-
:o that's a great conversion :-*
Thanks!

great additions
-
Finally back to working on the Tallarn. Finished up a few snipers.
The figures are Cadian snipers that I converted.
-
Lovely work!
-
Like those alot.
-
There are some great conversions going on in this topic :)
Nice work 8)
-
Really cool snipers!
-
Thank you all for your kind comments.
I finished up three new infantrymen this past week.
They are actually to fill out a special weapon squad of snipers
Not sure what to work on next. More standard Infantry sections would probably be the SENSIBLE thing to do... but I do have some roughriders that are calling to me!
-
Wow, amazing minis! These are so cool and your terrain makes it even better!
-
:-* :-*stunning
-
Wow, they all are great, I love the whole vibe of the army :-*
-
Great work dude!! I really like the whole thematic feel of the figures/colours/base. They look really coherent aesthetically.
-
I finished up a Special Weapon Squad armed with Plasma guns last week:
Earlier today I was assembling the roughriders and adding a few bags and bundles with green stuff to make them look like true desert travellers... Hopefully get those finished up soon-ish.
-
Great looking troops. I got a metric ton of the old metal Catachans, wish they were Tallarns. :(
-
Great looking troops. I got a metric ton of the old metal Catachans, wish they were Tallarns. :(
better than a metric ton of the plastic catachans *vomits*
-
Very nice army, this, looking forward to the Rough Riders.
-
Very cool conversions in this thread, looking forward to what you come up with next.
-
Here is the first of the Tallarn roughriders I am working on.
I decided to do them in black headscarves, like I did with the Command Section, to indicate some sort of elite or veteran status - though stat-wise, they really aren't... But I figure one would really have to be some kind of bad-ass to go charging into combat in the 41st millennium on HORSEBACK!
Originally I'd envisioned converting them so they'd be festooned with kit - like WW2 Desert SAS jeeps, but on horseback. But when I actually got to working on these I realized the flowing smocks would interfere with the where I was wanting to put stuff. In the end I just added a couple small bags, rolls, or waterskins to each.
More to follow.
-
I've always loved Tallarn Rough Riders. This is really impressive, great job!
-
Another addition to the force:
Some MORE snipers. This time I remembered to carve off part of the boot and add puttees.
Here are the infantry elements of the force so far.
-
Excellent. The snipers fit in well.
-
Another infantry Squad
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5rbAmzmOUkA/Wf4jO6df0NI/AAAAAAAAfRA/Z2lwTCcmCds4O-8tUuH8CYmeGP0UGN6OwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2697.jpg)
Second Squad, First Platoon.
-
:-*
-
Great stuff! Awesome paint jobs and conversions on them, I wouldn't have guessed that steel legion conversion was a conversion at all! Your scenery and civilians really give it all some background and character too.
-
Excellent
-
Thank you all for your comments.
Here are a few new items...
Veteran Sergeant
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f1QhDUgjTng/WgxvT8zNQ9I/AAAAAAAAfSw/vzi72UnOGawaK0xZw86ptPahU1HxBe1yQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2829.jpg)
Heavy Weapons Squad armed with Mortars.
Same guys, different angle.
I have one more Infantry Squad I'm going to paint up - to finish the first platoon - then I think I'm going to finish off the first Roughrider squad!
-
Very nice
-
Nice ,loving the camo scheme .
-
One more Infantry Section:
and that finishes off the first platoon:
well that's a bit more than the first platoon - there are three Special Weapon Squads there - and each platoon is not going to have three of those! (they might have one or possibly two - but not THREE!)
Next up my plan is to finish off the first squad of Roughriders. Then I'm not quite sure what to do next? I do have some other (non-Tallarn) painting projects to work on which I'll probably do before getting back to these. But when I do it could be the Company Commander or perhaps I'll just leap into working on a second infantry platoon.
What I should end up with when I'm finished painting everything I have will be:
Command Commander + Command Squad
2x Commissars (One, or possibly both should be Lord Commissars, if need be)
5x Platoon Commanders + Command Squads
15x Infantry Squads (organized in 5 platoons of 3 squads)
6x Special Weapon Squads (2x Sniper, 2x Melta, 2x Plasma)
12x Heavy Weapon Squads (4x Lascannon, 4x Autocannon, 3x Mortars, 1x Heavy Bolter)
3x Roughrider Squads (9 in each squad)
3x Scout Sentinels (which could either be fielded individually or as a single Troop of three)
4x Leman Rus Tanks (1 as a Tank Commander, 2 as standard pattern Battle Tanks, and one as a Punisher variant)
I'm not entirely sure how these will all be organized into Detachments just yet. Probably, if ALL were fielded at once, a Brigade and a Battalion of just Light Infantry, plus a Spearhead Detachment with the tanks and Sentinels.
At some point I'd like to pick up a super heavy tank, just for fun. (Mostly just because I just finished reading Shadowsword by Guy Haley - darn Games Workshop and their fun little fluff novels...)
I should probably build some science-fi desert terrain. I have a lot of very generic desert terrain - dunes, rocky outcrops, and mud brick houses - that have been used for everywhere from North Africa to Central Asia to Mars and other places beyond!
-
very nice collection
-
wow :o that will be some army
-
I had been working on some Roughriders, but then some fuel drums and jerry cans I ordered ages ago arrived allowing me to finish up this first Scout Sentinel Walker. I have two more to do at some point.
I was trying to do these up to look like something like the Long Range Desert Group trucks or Special Air Service jeeps from World War Two - festooned with kit necessary for long range reconnaissance missions deep behind enemy lines.
Hopefully I'll finish up the first squad of Roughriders next.
There are more pics on my blog:

Brilliant.
-
Loads of lovely eye candy over here.
Great conversion work too, creating a lovely looking feast for the eyes.
:-* :-*

I've made a few new additions to the Tallarn force over the last month...
Leman Russ battle tank. I wasn't totally happy with the markings on this, so I've since repainted them (see below)
Some of the repainted markings on the Leman Russ - the numbers are on the sides of the bins on the back of the turret and not really visible from this angle. (Oh and a new addition in the works!)
Finally, this past weekend I finished up a batch of Veterans for a Veteran Squad - but could also be fielded as a Kill Team for Shadow War: Armageddon.
-
nice additions
-
Lovely minis mate.
Have you seen the max mini “tallarn heads”?
-
Lovely minis mate.
Thanks
Have you seen the max mini “tallarn heads”?
Funny thing - I actually just discovered them earlier today! Someone had mentioned them in a post on the Tallarn Desert Raiders Facebook group and I looked them up!
I may try them out if I need to do anymore head swaps...

Thanks

Northstar had a pic of the frostgrave new plastic infantry with sci fi guns ,they looked ideal for tallarn penal legion.
See if this works?

Those do look pretty sweet!
I don't know that really need any more infantry, though... I have enough of the original guys to do fifteen infantry squads and six or seven special weapon squads - I just need to get them all PAINTED! Even when I have, I'm not entirely sure when I'd ever field all the guys I have!?
Now that I think about it, I could pick up some of those guys just to use as pirates or rebels or chaos cultists on desert planets where the Tallarn might be deployed...?
-
I love all the new additions since I last looked.
8) 8) 8)
The idea of knocking up a few Sentinel conversions is always tempting as I love that kit so much.
::)
As for getting more models: If you already have enough for 15 squads, I would leave it at that.
As I have put together a sizeable IG force in the past and gave up with adding any more standard squads after painting the first seven, I am warning you from experience.
I doubt you will complete 15 and you will almost certainly never use anywhere near that amount.
Just concentrate on what you have and see how far you get with them whilst adding more 'interesting' stuff to the force.
:) ;)

Today I just bought a load of tallarn off facebook page, couldn't resist 😂

Just off the paint table... Not Tallarn per se... but sometimes the Astra Militarum are called upon to support an Inquisitor and his staff...
The inquisitor I've had for 25+ years and am just repainting - the ministorium staff are more recent acquisitions. They maybe be fielded with my Tallarn at some point. More likely they will show up in the Rogue Trader RPG game I'm starting up next week.
-
Had some good lighting conditions for taking pictures of miniatures (overcast, but bright = good light but no harsh shadows) so I got out and took some new pics of the force so far...

I put some more pics of the individual units on a page on my blog:

A great set of figures you’ve got there!
-
Brilliant!
Looking great so far.
:-* :-*
-
Thanks Guys!
Here are this week's additions - two more Special Weapon Squads! I need more Special Weapon Squads like I need another hole in my head, but they're so small, I feel like I'm getting more done. I can say "Hey, I got TWO squads done this week!" I'll take what I can get to stay motivated!

Lovely shot seeing the army together - fantastic work, sir!
Intrigued by the Warhound. I've never looked up how titans work in 40K. What happens when the reactor blows up? Roughly translating from Epic to 40K, I'm guessing a large chunk of the table is completely cleansed of both friend and foe?
-

It's pretty weak in 8th Edition.
If the Warhound Titan is reduced to 0 wounds, you roll a d6 before removing the model from the table. On a 5+ it suffers a "Cataclysmic Explosion" and each unit within 3d6" suffers..... d6 Mortal Wounds... that's it...
-
Lovely work. Love the Titan, just finished mine off and have started on the Reaver now. I need to get a Shadowsword for my Tallarn but should really finish the baneblade first
-
Very nice. Very Saddam Republican Guard. Hope these fight harder!
Like the camoflage. And the writing on the inquisition retinue’s books.
-
Thanks Guys!

It was actually seeing your titan painted up on your blog that inspired me to seek one out on eBay. I really dig the paint job you did on yours and have been serious considering doing something similar...
-
Thanks Guys!

Thanks, I am painting the Reaver in the same scheme and then on to the epic ones

how very cinematic...a D6 light shower of disruptive dust... :?
none the less looking forwards to seeing how its painted and crossing my fingers its not red or blue. the only colours in existence it seems for titans lol
-
Love Tallarn, very much like how you handle them! :)
Got a couple of squads storaged. This might inspire me to actually dig them out and paint them.
-
Thanks Guys
none the less looking forwards to seeing how its painted and crossing my fingers its not red or blue. the only colours in existence it seems for titans lol
But... I LIKE red... (and I really like the way Quendil's Warhound Titan looks!)
I'm leaning towards camp schemes at the moment - at least for the carapace.
In the meantime - I finally finished a squad of Roughriders!

But that force is pretty much done now... So I'm working on these Tallarn.
If ever I finish them, I'd love to put together a Valhallan force... because I'm that kind of stupid...
-
Wow excellent collection! :-*

Two new additions to the force...

Another Infantry Squad (for a total of four so far!)
And another Heavy Weapon Squad armed with Mortars.
I've been in a bit of a painting frenzy the last week and a half. I actually signed up for a 40K tournament on the 24th. It's going to be my first 40K tournament ever. Which seems like a weird thing, considering I'm 46 and started playing the game 30 years ago... (Mind you, I took a 20+ year break from the game, so...). The whole tournament style of play has been anathema to me since forever. I'm not totally stoked on the idea still, but I thought it might be a good chance to meet some of the other local players. And it's only 1000 points and there are some restrictions on big things (no Lords of War, no things that are 12+ power level, etc...). AND it's being held at a bar just four blocks from my house...
Anyway, despite easily having 1000+ points of Catachans I could have fielded, heck, I probably have 1000+ points of TALLARN I could have fielded, I got this stupid idea in my head that it would be fun to field a BRIGADE detachment for 1000 points... all I had to do was paint THREE Infantry Squads, a Heavy Weapon Squad, TWO Command Squads, TWO Officers, the Leman Russ tank (see above) and... well, originally I was going to put together another scout Sentinel, but now I'm thinking if I got two more Roughriders painted up, I could field a second squad of those, and that would be easier.... and all that had to be painted in three weeks...
No problem!
I have the tank and an infantry squad, a command squad (I'll post a picture of those when I finish the officer) and one heavy weapon squad done. Still have to finish up two more infantry squads, another command team, two officers, and a couple roughriders... in two weeks...
Here's what the force will look like:

Love the Rough Riders. Beautiful...you can keep the Catachans though, never cared for `em! lol

Two more squads finished up this week...

So now I can field "Brigade Detachments".
I just have two officers, a command squad and two roughriders to finish up in the next week...
(Oh, and then I still have loads more to do, but I'll have enough painted for the tournament I'm playing in next Saturday...)

Always love tallarn but prefers plastic..
I second frostgrave plastic minis, take a look about Ghost archipelago crewman. They have good heads for desert dudes

Wow, great army! Love these kind of pictures!

Thanks guys!
You may even paint all 15 squads (you madman!).
I probably will... even though there's virtually no chance I will EVER use all 15 in game... because I'm that special kind of stupid...er... megalomaniac...?
-
It's been a while since I painted anything for the Tallarn - busy with other side projects - but I'm back at it and finally finished up another tank!

I have four more Leman Russ tanks to finish up a Vanquisher, a Demolisher, and two others I'll probably build as bog standard Battle Tanks... oh, and the Shadowsword... and a bunch more roughriders... and infantry... and other stuff... stay tuned, much more on the way...
-
Very nice job on those tanks.
-
You put a lot of work on those, but it totally paid off.
-
And now for some SUPER Heavy support!

Lovely work :-*

Very nice.
-
Love that Shadowsword!
-
Thanks Guys!
-
very nice additions

Beauties..
One little matter I see is that you wrote TallaDn in arabic instead of TallaRn :)
lol
But we can agree its rather minor flaw in otherwise perfect paintjobs :P
-
Beautiful work on the tanks! I like the subtle wear you have on the cammo pattern. How are you dulling it down? A white wash?

I had a feeling I'd probably end up doing this - some of the letters look quite similar to one who isn't really familiar with the alphabet. Thanks for pointing this out - after having a good second look at it, I see what you mean and I shall endeavour to fix these (at some point) and be a little more careful with my future tanks!

Thanks!
After painting the tanks I actually just dry brush with a light brown where I figure things would end up getting dirty and then second lighter dry brush all over with a light tan. I use the same colours I use on the bases of the infantry, etc. to try and tie them all together.

At least it did not say ""I seem to be having this tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle".

Armageddon. On a really big table or floor. Tank detachments against Titans can be fun. Swarms of bugs etc.

I guess so... there was an Armageddon even locally two weeks ago, but I missed it. I'll be ready NEXT TIME though!
