Slightly off-piste - I have been playing about with the scale/gauge combination of 1:27.7 (or 11mm = 1 foot) and 16.5mm PECO 'crazy track'. The results can be found on my Blog at;
http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Narrow%20Gauge
However, following comments on my Blog. I have had six 1:27.7 scale figures cast in resin and will be making them available for sale very soon. see this post for details;

Should you be interested in joining me in this adventure you can find more details on the Blog.
Thank you.

Earlier today, I posted details of the third resin set - a group of five items of 'clutter'. Like the earlier figures/character, these items have been cast in resin by Rob Alderman of Hysterical Games and will be available to buy very soon.

Tony, this is absolutely great stuff!
I immediately recognized the Feldbahn engine as a Motorenfabrik Oberursel make. I was raised and lived for 20 years in that town, learned my profession in the halls of that company and still dream of replicating the railway station in H0 scale... Thank you for awakening sweet memories!
The new sculpts are excellent, although that is a scale you'd hardly find buyers/modelers for in continental Europe, I think. If it is of interest to you to find some, try to post your stuff over there:
http://www.buntbahn.de/modellbau/
It's in German, but I'd be happy to help with translation. :)
-
Thank you Michi, I glad you like it (so far).
I notice that the railway modelling site is a members only site, so will have a think about joining and posting. However I think I might just take a stab at it.

They're mainly "G" scale in 1/22,5 (gauges II, IIm, IIe und IIf), but also all other big scales from 1/1 to 1/32.
"Anlagenbau" sub-forum is most interesting for you, I think. When I followed this thread I felt like a clumsy schoolboy: http://www.buntbahn.de/modellbau/viewtopic.php?t=11448&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
BTW: There is a museum near my home where you find exclusively the relatively rare 1/2 metre gauge industrial railway prototypes on display/in action (open to the public only twice a year): http://www.feldbahn500.de/gelaende_frameset.htm
-
Once again thank you for the links.
The 500mm museum images look very interesting.

is that offer open to all? when I tried to register through google translate I can't get anywhere, and I no "sprechen sie deutsche". thanks either way

Slightly off-piste - I have been playing about with the scale/gauge combination of 1:27.7 (or 11mm = 1 foot) ....
those are great looking figures. I hope you develop a following for them in additional poses. there's a bunch of figure makers on this forum: http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php?action=community (scroll way down) and a substantial number of the membership has different gauge interests other than 7/8ths. most of the smaller gauges are what brought them to the larger scale.
another, although not strictly railroads, forum of great craftsmen is the Westlake forum: http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/ you pretty much need to know a secret handshake and password to get in, but there's some great builders and your work will be appreciated.
ps: I think I got your posts confused, but I know you'll figure it out!
if you can figure out French: http://forum.e-train.fr/viewforum.php?f=4

Of course I will help. I am not registered there and was only browsing yet, but I think I could help you to get through the process. :)

Wonderful Tony! If I just had the time... :'(
-
This looks beautiful.
A shelf layout is a brief stretch of line and not a complete circuit, am I right?
I'm thinking of building one of these (at the usual HO scale, however) so I'll be subscribing to this. 8) 8) 8)

Correct - it can also be called a micro layout.
I look forward to seeing your layout.

Thanks - I'm learning from yours before starting!
But I do confess to having a plan at least. I'm starting to wish I hadn't seen your canal ideas however, as that got me wondering about adding one :D

I remember "converting" a Dapol salt car from 00 scale to 28mm narrow gauge by widening the body... :D
However I reckon that you have to scratchbuild all rolling stock in that scale though.

Outstanding - this is very special, I hardly remember seeing many industrial terrain pieces on railway layouts that are not cranes of some sort.

Wow. That's an impressive project. Looks like the Lemax Christmas figures would be about the same scale as these, so perhaps you could find some useful figures in that range to complement your layout? I'm converting and repainting some of them for my 60-65mm-ish Victorian project and they can be really nice once they are repainted.
Thinking of figures like these:

Nice work but curious question: what drove the choice of scale?
-
"Nice work but curious question: what drove the choice of scale?"
The choice of scale was dictated by the gauge (the distance between the rails) - HO OO scale track is 16.5mm wide and this does not correspond to any known scale - but just an approximation. I also like modelling narrow gauge diesel engines. So 16.5mm divided by 18inches (a recognised industrial narrow gauge scale) gives 1:27.7 or 11mm = 1 foot.
Not your average scale gauge combination but since starting this project I know that I am not alone in modelling this or a close version of this scale/gauge.
During the month of August I have been giving regular daily updates on my Blog. Today was the last planned update, but check back and see some of the scratch-built items of clutter I have been working on. Full details on the Blog.

Somehow missed the latest updates. That clutter looks useful for my 64-65mm Victorian Horror project, which I think is about the same scale as your project.
-
Also have a look at the Lemax accessories range. They have stuff like bins, benches, gas pumps etc... that might give you some useful clutter and should be the right size for you (I use it too for my project). Just stay away from the stuff like outhouses as those are smaller scale.

This weekend, I added lots of scratch-built 'clutter' to the layout. I had great fun placing the items and moving them around before gluing them in place with superglue and producing these vignettes.

I know it's far too late to change it, but to be quite honest the combination of overhead shots and a lack of a horizon of any sort in the backdrop is really detracting from an otherwise amazing piece.
Is it meant to be photographed/viewed at a lower angle than these in-progress shots?
-
Only catching up now, lovely colours and textures.

"I know it's far too late to change it, but to be quite honest the combination of overhead shots and a lack of a horizon of any sort in the backdrop is really detracting from an otherwise amazing piece."
The whole project is/was a test piece to see if this scale/gauge combination works - as such most of the materials were scrounged or donated for free and this is why the size of the base and backboard was decided upon. If I was to build a proper working and landscaped model railway along similar lines, I would make a number of changes - a bigger (and curved back scene) being just one.
"Is it meant to be photographed/viewed at a lower angle than these in-progress shots?"
It is intended to be views at just below eye level.
Thank you for the comments.

Excellent result Tony! Will there be more modules to add to the quay‘s lenght?
-
"Excellent result Tony! Will there be more modules to add to the quay‘s length?"
Interesting question.....
The models and layout were built to test the scale/gauge combination and as such any further additions or modules were not part of the plan.
Now that the test piece is nearing completion I am already looking at what will be my next Narrow Gauge project. At this moment it looks like a completely new layout rather than adding to this diorama layout. Although that could change!!!!!
If my Wife agrees.....

No I didn't - the water surface texture was added before the basin was painted. I used filler and acrylic medium to get the ripple effect.

If you have trouble tracking down more suitably sized wildlife, I will sound like a broken record, but the Lemax range has some in about 1/28th scale.

I was thrown off because white knight mentioned he'd repainted the animals to work with 30mm minis. On a quick scroll-through the rabbits, squirrels, and fox all seem to match the Robin Hood figures in scale.
So I suppose WK is just using them with 30mm figures even though they will be quite large in comparison. Unless he's only using the deer.
Just a bit of confusion then!
-

No, I mentioned using them with 1/28 - 1/30 scale minis, which translates to about 65-66mm. ;)

Hopefully this sorts it out.....

I think that was sorted a while back, but no harm done with further clarification. lol

Very promising start. I have yet to start my first building in this scale, though I've been wanting to for some time now.

This is coming along nicely Tony. I really like both the idea and execution of the crate for transportation and storage of the layout.
-
Me too, but also wondering about the weight of it? :o
-
Yes you have seen the flaw in my plan.....
It does weigh quite a bit - but I can still lift it without help although as more and more detail is added, I prefer to get my wife to help when I move it.
It would be a whole lot heavier if I had not cut all those holes in the baseboard.

Looks great. I do have a question with regards to this:
I have added a plywood and MDF fascia to the sides and front, this fascia was both glued and screwed in place and then filled and sanded.
Did you screw it directly into the foam? How does that even work?

No the fascias are glued to a solid wood base and surround. See this blog post to show the basic base structure - http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-yellow-pelican-mining-co-recap.html (http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-yellow-pelican-mining-co-recap.html).
With regards to screwing into foam; I don't do that, but I do drill into foam and glue bamboo skewers into the holes. I find that this is the bast way to join solid objects for example plywood to foam - I use PVA glue and then drill holes and 'skewer' the plywood to the foam.
You can see this in action in image 5 of this post - http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2022/04/yellow-pelican-mining-co-easter-2022_20.html (http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2022/04/yellow-pelican-mining-co-easter-2022_20.html)
I hope that this helps to explain.

As well as working on the landscaping of The Yellow Pelican Mining Co. railway layout, I have decided to build a new 1:27.7 scale locomotive. Today's Blog post gives details of this intention and shows my two current steam locomotives - a single piston horizontal 'Shay type' and a slightly larger double piston engine.

You're a machine, Tony! Non stop!
Eager to see the running gear on this one, since it doesn't seem to have the same piston arrangement as the others.
-
Pistons on a vertical boilered engine are usually inboard with coupling rods either fitted to the wheels (outside frames) or outside. Historically there would have been coupling rods, but I have modelled the pistons inboard and hidden (for ease of modelling).
I'm not sure if there was ever a vertical boilered steam engine with this configuration, but as these are free lance - I'm not bothered.

With the New Engine finished, I have started painting the main groundwork and rocks. There is still a lot to do, but I feel better now that I have started this part of the layout.

Is the mountain meant to be solid rock (it looks like to me) or is it covered with earth? The right part looks like some muddy avalanche has happened before (roof and wooden reinforcements at track level). I can't judge rock from soil by looking at the pictures though.
-
This area is meant to be rock, but I have added sidings to protect the track from rock falls.

This area is meant to be rock, but I have added sidings to protect the track from rock falls.
I see, this is what I tought and what I stumbled upon. The sidings seem to be overlapped by the rock (as does the roof) and would therefore not stop any debris from rolling/falling to the line.

I have continued to add greenery and plants to the layout. The most recent Blog post shows how I have added grass, more green clumps and home made succulents to the layout. For more information, see the Blog.

Adding the crane. Ever since I first started discussing this layout with the grandchildren - they have wanted a working crane.

What's the nominal purpose of a little box van like that for the miners?

"What's the nominal purpose of a little box van like that for the miners?"
Could be used for storing explosives or supplies, possible as a latrine! - But I modelled it just because I liked the look of the Model Earth Design wagon and thought I'd like to have one on my layout.
Sometimes it's that simple.

"Cos it looks cool" has always been, and will continue to be, a perfectly valid reason for many things. ;)

I simply love what you do there Tony! Your passion for details is amazing. :-*
I found a quite breathtaking narrow gauge ore railway of yesteryear in Romania today. I thought it might be of interest for inspiration:

Woah, already! Didn't realize you were so close Tony, with a roof still off and all. Ha, clever bugger saving it as a surprise. :D
Finished product looks excellent. Well done!
-
Yes. I kept recent posting back so the magazine would have the expose.
Tony
-
What did you use for the shakes on the highest roof? Did you cut by hand or was there something you could make or buy in strips?
-
"What did you use for the shakes on the highest roof? Did you cut by hand or was there something you could make or buy in strips?"
They were cut by hand from a sheet of veneer that was given to me some time ago. They were then glues in place one at a time. Not easy as they kept curling up but eventually it was done.
Tony
-
Well, not something I can easily duplicate then. But it turned out great on the model!
-
I think if I was to do it again, I'd use double sided tape and apply the shakes in horizontal strips with the grain running down the roof. It would stop the curling caused by the PVA glue.
