Title: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show (update 8/10: Willy Wonka)
Post by: white knight on October 25, 2017, 06:46:27 PM
New project and new blog: https://victorianhorrorfigures.blogspot.be/ (https://victorianhorrorfigures.blogspot.be/)

This project is an offshoot of my other venture in the 65mm scale, called Swashbuckling Sessions - Toy Soldier Style. Like that other project, the core is a selection of prepainted "toy soldiers" produced by King & Country, in particular the "World of Dickens" range. These will be complemented by homepainted figures from many different sources, as well as extensive conversions based on Dickensian Lemax christmas figures.

The year is 1888. Queen Victoria rules the largest Empire know to "civilised" man from the British throne. But all is not well in London. With the advent of modern science, the impossible seems possible and while the future seemed bright at first, it seems ancient evils that had lurked in the dark for centuries have taken their cue to reclaim their corner of the world. Nosferatu and werewolves roam the nights and a killer known only as Jack The Ripper stalks Whitechapel. The citizens of London have learned to lock up their homes and not to venture in the night unless absolutely neccessary, but in truth, the light of day brings no safety. Criminal gangs gain in power, with the Napoleon of crime pulling many strings, except perhaps in the Eastern quarter, where there are whispers of an underground society lead by another murderous mastermind. The Hellfire Club deal in black magic in their attempts to haness ancient powers. And some people swear they have seen the dead walk the streets...

There are some who try to maintain a semblance of peace and order. The Diogenes Club for one, Scotland Yard for another. And there is talk that Her Majesty recalled several of her finest agents and soldiers from across the world. But will it be enough to stop the tide?

The first figures for this project are Holmes & Watson, though I will be uploading more over the next days when I can take some pictures.

Not technically a part of Scotland Yard, the longstanding collaboration of the famous department with the renowned consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, and his associate and friend, Doctor John Watson has been widely publicised (not in the least by Dr. Watson himself, who styles himself as the official chronicler of the great detective's accomplishments, much to the chagrin of the latter).

Holmes and Watson are stock figures from the King and Country "World of Dickens" range, with this small change that I painted a cobblestone texture on the bases to match the rest of my collection (the plain grey being a bit dull otherwise).

First off, Sherlock Holmes. I'm guessing inspiration was taken from the Peter Cushing interpretation for this figure. Just something about that gaze... Magnifying glass, pipe and deerstalker are all present to complete the Holmes panoply. A very striking figure.

Secondly, Doctor Watson. A slightly portly fellow, there is something about the way he holds that thick cane that suggests he's a man of action and won't hesitate to use it. No obvious inspiration here that I can see (though I may just be missing the reference), but a solid figure nonetheless.

Aside from some smaller structures, no. The Lemax buildings are closer to 28mm size and too cartoony for this project anyway. :)

You can always make your own.  I am in remiss not to have mentioned the background you posted for your setting.  That red skyline commanded my attention on opening the thread.  I'm interested to see what you create.

The first two members of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are done.

Captain Nemo is a mysterious figure. While his adopted name literally means "Nobody", it has been suggested his true identity is that of Prince Dakkar, the son of an Indian Raja. Whoever he is, this enigmatic adventurer and sometimes pirate, is without doubt a scientific genius, who roams the depths of the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus. While his demeanor usually suggests a stern, controlled confidence, he is driven by a thirst for vengeance and a hatred of imperialism focused on the British Empire. Therefore, it comes as a great surprise that he heeded the Empire's call in it's time of need, and agreed to join a team of individuals with unique skills, called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In a team that is composed of both heroes and monsters, it remains to be seen to which category Captain Nemo will ultimately belong.

Captain Nemo is based on a stock King and Country figure, namely a sold out "Club Figure"' representing a 9th Bengal Lancer in dress uniform. Both the attire and colouring are very close to the representation of Captain Nemo as he appears in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The only modification I made was to repaint the base, to match my other figures. Sure, the pose is a bit static, but then they can't all be kicking and leaping around (and it helps with the "controlled confidence" stick).

---

Mr. Hyde came into existence when the seemingly mildmannered Dr. Henry Jekyll, who occasionally feels he is battling between the good and evil within himself and has spent a great part of his life trying to repress evil urges that were not fitting for a man of his stature, creates a serum, or potion, in an attempt to rid himself of this hidden evil within his personality. The serum worked, but not as the good doctor intended and instead of repressing his baser instincts, the serum released them. Jekyll transformed into Edward Hyde, a hideous, evil creature without compassion or remorse. Initially, Hyde was a small man, but as time went by and he revelled in his evil deeds, Hyde grew in power and size. He no longer relies upon the serum to unleash his inner demon and Mr. Hyde, now a giant of a man, is able to manifest whenever Jekyll shows signs of physical or moral weakness.

This figure is a conversion, based on a Knight Models (OOP) Hulk figure. Modifications involve filing off some detail from his ripped pants, adding sideburns and a top hat taken from a Lemax Scrooge figure. The look I went for is inspired by the portrayals of Hyde in the LXG and Van Helsing movies, though not an exact copy. The figure was then based and painted to match the other figures.

No problems as can't be solved with a piece of brick wall.

Hyde Smash!

While originally intended for the 35mm scale, the figure has a good size for a 65mm scale Hyde. His head is the same size as the K&C models, height is slightly higher, but he's much broader. But I'll let the picture speak for itself:

Sir, must I point out that we're on the same side?

And a comparison with the original Hulk figure:

Thanks, gents. I'm well pleased with him.

Eager to see the figures you repurpose as Quatermain and Mina Harker... ;D

Mina will be tomorrow's update. As for Mister Quatermain, he's currently undergoing heavy conversion work after having been brutally dismembered and roughly put back together. He'll need several more putty sessions before the brushes can touch him. If all goes to plan, he should be worth it though.

Wilhelmina "Mina" Harker was the wife of Jonathan Harker. After the death of her friend Lucy Westenra, she joined the coalition around Abraham Van Helsing, bent on destroying Count Dracula, the vampire. Unfortunately, the Count learned of this plot against him and took revenge by visiting — and biting — Mina at least three times and feeding her his blood, dooming her to become a vampire should she die. Eventually, Mina was turned and became a vampire, but unlike many, she managed to hold on to part of her humanity and in her new found form, she is a valuable asset to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

My version of Mina is based on the LXG movie interpretation (rather than the graphic novel, where she never became a vampire). The figure is a Lemax christmas figure, representing a young lady carrying an umbrella. I sculpted on a scarf and painted her in pale skintones and black and red clothing. I gave her red pupils to suggest the bloodlust in her eyes and to mark her more clearly one of the undead. The umbrella adds to the suggestion of a vampire shying away from the sun, I think. All in all, a pretty easy, but effective conversion of a cheap figure. I'm quite happy with the way she turned out, though she looks much better in person than in the pictures.

I know it's not raining, I just don't want the sun to ruin this lovely complexion.

Gaze at my cold, dark beauty and tremble...

A comparison with the original figure. I quickly realised she'd make a fine vampire lady, which, after a while, mutated in the idea of using her for vampire Mina. These christmas figures don't always show it, due to seemingly being painted by a drunk person, but many are quite lovely sculpts if you look more closely.

Three projects in this scale !   I took a quick look at the King and Country Dickens collection, and saw there are quite a few figures  - a lot of material for your fertile mind.  Didn't see a good Colonel Sebastian Moran (with his air rifle) !   Dick Swiveller bore a more than passing resemblance to the Johnny Walker label !
Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show - Larger Than Life (update 28/10: Dracula)
Post by: white knight on October 28, 2017, 09:49:38 AM
Count Vlad Dracula moved from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread the undead curse. He boarded a Russian ship, the Demeter, taking along with him boxes of Transylvanian soil, which he required in order to regain his strength. In England, Dracula successfully purchased multiple estates under the alias 'Count De Ville' throughout London and devised to distribute the 50 boxes to each of them to secure for himself "lairs". Despite attempts to stop him by Abraham Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker, Dr. John Seward, Quincey Morris, and Arthur Holmwood, Dracula first takes Lucy Westenra, who is subsequently killed, and Mina Harker, the latter being turned, but managing to escape his control and remaining mistress of her own destiny.

The count is an extensive conversion of a cheap Lemax Christmas figure. I added the shades, hair and beard, made a new cane and bulked out the legs and arms so he wouldn't look too weedy.

What did you expect, a black evening suit with a cape?

It wasn't easy to get the "eyes peeking over the top of the shades" look, but I think it worked. I would have prefered to do red shades, but decided to stay true to the source material which had them dark blue.

Is that what they call "bedroom eyes"?

My interpretation of Dracula is of course based on Gary Oldman's version of the Count:

I'm a handsome foreigner in a stylish suit, why won't they love me?

"You belong with me, Mina" - "I would rather die! ...Again."

The base figure was one half of another Lemax model called "Attending services"

Yes, three projects. This one came about after many hours browsing the backcatalog of Lemax figures they put out throughout the years, in search of useful bits to convert for my Musketeers and Robin Hood projects. At one point I thought, I could easily fill a complete Victorian town with those...  lol

Colonel Moran will likely have to be a conversion, though I haven't figured out what to base him on yet. He's a must have though, especially since I already have my eye on a figure to stand in for Moriarty.

Another one to close the evening, a character of my own devising this one.

With the many evils stalking the streets of London, Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, in her great wisdom, decided to recall some of the greatest military heroes of the Empire from the various wars they were fighting to form a mixed unit, that were quickly called "Her Majesty's Finest". To lead these brave men, Colonel William Lovelace, of the Madras Lancers, also called "The Iron Colonel" returned from his mission in India.

Colonel Lovelace is a stock King and Country figure, with only the base repainted to match my other figures. The model is a retired club figure. Another static pose, but he does exhude that British "stiff upper lip" officer air. Besides, the members of his team will count plenty of action poses.

Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show - Larger Than Life (update 29/10: Ripper)
Post by: white knight on October 29, 2017, 08:31:28 AM
Jack the Ripper is the callname for a so far unidentified serial killer active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. His identity remains a mystery and the name "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter written by someone claiming to be the murderer that was disseminated in the media. This may have been a forgery. Other names given to this ruthless killer by the press are "the Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron". Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involve women, and more precisely female prostitutes who live and work in the slums of the East End of London. The nature of the cuts and the removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge and may in fact be a man of the medical profession. Some rumours suggest the Royal Court may be implicated but understandably, those aren't taken seriously and don't make it into the papers.

Ol' Jack may be in for more than he bargained this time...

The figure for Jack the Ripper is made by King and Country, in the "World of Dickens" range and has all the characteristics we've come to associate with the killer: the top hat, the coat, the knife and doctor's case. A splendid figure that is clearly sculpted in a pose intended to lurk behind the corner of a wall, waiting for his next victim to walk right into his arms. As with the other K&C figures, I didn't have to do any painting except for repainting the base to fit in with my other models.

A Scandal in Bohemia -
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle sometimes used imaginary late 19th century nations (but based in reality), for the plots of some of his stories (e.g. the King of Bohemia - which in our reality is merely a part of the Holy Roman Empire; or the King of Scandanavia, as if it were one unified nation).  I thought the attached - an Austro-Hungarian hussar corporal of 1914, 1/30 scale from Del Prado - would make a good military attache or aide de campe from one of those Central European nations (and Del Prado are much cheaper than King and Country) :

WK, WK, WK what can I say?

got any of the Smog figures?  do they scale up?

I do and they don't. The Smog figures are 1/35 or 50mm, while these are around the 65mm mark. I will try to use a couple that I hope will be fairly scale neutral, but for the most part, they are not compatible unfortunately.

I thought the attached - an Austro-Hungarian hussar corporal of 1914, 1/30 scale from Del Prado - would make a good military attache or aide de campe from one of those Central European nations (and Del Prado are much cheaper than King and Country)

Thanks, that figure does look useful. I have a few of the Del Prado medievals, so if the scale is the same, then these should work.

Three more, finished yesterday.

Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, the territorial police force responsible for policing most of London, derived its name from the location of the Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard. The Scotland Yard entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous. When most people think of Scotland Yard, they think first of its detectives: Lestrade, Abberline, Reid, ... But the real backbone of the police force are its constables, who work the streets day and night.

Nothing to see here, folks!

The figures are different editions of Lemax christmas figures. I've rebased them, and changed the helmet badges of the portly one and the whistling one  so they would all match. I also made their clubs bigger, to match the one with the lamp. The latter being the only one of the three that's part of Lemax' current range, it seemed easier to take him as the standard, in case I get a few more copies to convert.

This portly fellow is my favourite of the three, as he oozes so much character.

Right, so tell me what happened and don't give me any crap.

The second one was standing on a trafic stand, but I figured he would work well as a copper blowing his whistle and raising his hand in an attempt to stop a suspect and alert his fellow constables.

Hold it right there!

The third one is obviously on patrol on a cold night. He brought a lantern to shine some light on the things that lurk in the dark.

I can't believe I'm stuck with the night shift again.

The two older models are a bit on the short side, but they fit in well enough (keeping in mind that the Sherlock figure is particularly tall).

Yes, indeed. Though I do have some evening dress and cloack models too that I will use as lesser vampires. ;)

Only a few small bits so far (which I still need to paint), but I hope to build some building fronts and such when I have more time (or the light becomes too bad to paint).
Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show - Larger Than Life (update 30/10: Sikes)
Post by: white knight on October 30, 2017, 05:30:56 PM
One more for the evening. Another prepainted one, so not much work, tomorrow's update will be another full paintjob.

Bill Sikes is a career criminal associated with Fagin, and a suspected murderer. He is violent and aggressive, prone to sudden bursts of extreme behaviour. A rough and barbaric man, he is now one of many thugs on the beck and call of the criminal mastermind known as "The Napoleon of Crime".

The figure is another straight from the box figure by King and Country, in the World of Dickens range. A characterful sculpt, in a somewhat outdated costume. I only repainted the plain grey base so it would match the rest of my figures. All in all, a lovely figure, if I would have any complaints it's that he's not quite ugly enough for the book description.

Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show - Larger Than Life (update 31/10: Orlok)
Post by: white knight on October 31, 2017, 07:43:27 AM
Another one for the Dracula faction.

Count Orlok is a vampire from Transylvania, and is known as "The Bird of Death", who feasts upon the blood of living humans. He is believed to have been created by Belial, the lieutenant demon of Satan. Like Count Dracula, he traveled to London by ship. His journey by sea spread plague all over Europe. Although an elder himself, Orlok reluctantly serves Dracula as one of his close advisors. Doing so, he takes some pleasure from the fact that his appearance fills the Count with distaste.

The vile Count Orlok.

Orlok is, of course the vampire from the cult movie "Nosferatu", who does serve Dracula in Kim Newman's Anno Dracula novels. The figure is a metal kit from Miniaturas Beneito. While technically listed as 54mm, the figure is of a similar size to the 65mm King and Country figures and fits in beautifully.

Lieutenant Georges Findlay of the Royal Marines and Sergeant Angus MacIntosh of the Gordon Higlanders were recalled to London from their post in Sudan to join the elite unit that has come to be known as "Her Majesty's Finest". Like the other members of that distinguished unit, they kept their respective uniforms as a matter of pride.

Allright boys, party is over!

Sergeant MacIntosh proudly wears the green kilt of the Gordon Highlanders and while his belly may have gotten a bit out of control, he is still a force to be reconned with. His short fuse and temper have prevented him from rising above the rank of sergeant for any prolonged period of time, though some say this may be deliberate on his part.

Now be a good lad and die already...

Lieutenant Findlay would have made captain by now, had he not had the misfortune of courting the wrong woman whio happened to be married to an influential man. Still, his distinguished record has not been overlooked by Colonel Lovelace when recruiting the members of Her Majesty's Finest.

Fire!

Both of these are prepainted figures made by John Jenkins Designs for the Sudan War. As usual, I repainted the bases so they would match the other figures. Unlike the other figures, I made up the names and background of these characters instead of borrowing them from popular litterature.

Next one is the first figure for the Chinatown Underworld faction.

The sector of London where Chinese immigrants have made their home, commonly known as Chinatown, is also the place from where evil mastermind Fu Man Chu directs his criminal operations, ranging from Chinese Tong street gangs to skilled assassins and magic users. Wei Long Wu is one of the latter. A skilled sorceror, he uses his occult skills to do Fu Man Chu's bidding, including the cursing and often eliminating of his master's enemies.

I think this potion may have gone bad...

The figure is an easy conversion of the King and Country Hong Kong street shop barber figure, with the addition of a magic vial from a 28mm hard plastic Games Workshop "Empire wizard" kit. The razor is a separate piece on the model, so it was easy to replace it with the vial. The chinese character painted on the vial is supposed to read "death", but I'm not sure how legible that is. The base was changed to fit my other figures.

I bought the set on impusle because it was severly discounted, but I didn't really have need for a barber scene. I did consider at first to just keep the razor and call him an assassin barber, but the pose of the other arm looked odd out of context. Then I thought of those plastic bits I saved for another project and suddenly the outstretched arms worked.  ;D

Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show (update 3/11: Egyptian cultists)
Post by: white knight on November 03, 2017, 10:17:17 AM
And the first figures of another faction: Egyptian cultists!

The cult of Nehebkau is an Egyptian sect dedicated to the return of this minor Egyptian god, whose avatar was a twoheaded snake and was said to have guarded the entrance to Duat, the Egyptian underworld. Recently, there have been sightings of the purpleclad cultists in the streets of London. Rumour goes they may have been drawn here by the recent discovery by British explorers of a tomb containing a mysterious sarcophagus. The sarcophagus and its as yet unrevealed contents have been brought to the capital of the realm for further study.

Cultists doing what cultists do.

The figures are partial repaints of Thomas Gunn arab figures. The original robes didn't quite scream cultists of a forbidden sect, so I changed them for stylish red and purple, with a yellow glyph indicative of their god, Nehebkau. The bases were further changed to match the other figures.

Thank you! Now for a few of the innocent bystanders.

Chinese antiques have become a bit of a fad with the ladies and gentlemen of London and dealers have started to appear on the market to peddle their wears. It's hard to judge authenticity though, so buyers beware.

Look all you want, I do not deal in fakes!

The models are part of King and Country's Streets of old Hong Kong range of prepainted figures, so I only had to adapt the bases to fit my other figures. As is usual with this range, the detail of the paintjobs is very intricate. A lovely subrange.

Lieutenant Alfred Caine and private Ishmael (no last name given) were serving with the Royal Navy when they were called upon to join "Her Majesty's Finest". Little did they know they would soon be hacking their way through legions of undead in London.

"What's your name, private?" - "Call me Ishmael, Sir."

Alfred Caine joined the Navy in 1875 and served on the 'Britannia' and on the 'Alexandra', the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet. He was wounded in the shoulder while serving ashore in the Niger River in 1881, but made a full recovery. The following year he became first lieutenant and was present at the bombardment of Alexandria. He fought in the Sudan campaign of 1885.

Hold fast!

Private Ishmael was added to the unit on the recommendation of Lt. Caine, who praised the young sailor's courage and resourcefullness. Ishamel doesn't talk much about his past, though it has been said he was the sole survivor of a whaling expedition in his youth. Such a tragedy is sure to mark a man.

Both models are prepainted John Jenkins Designs toy soldiers from their Sudan War range. I only changed the bases so they would match my other figures. Lt. Caine is a character I made up, while private Ishmael was borrowed from Moby Dick.

Post by: white knight on November 05, 2017, 08:56:50 AM
The London market is full of big and small stands selling anything from fresh produce to dusty  books and antiques. This old woman is selling some (overly?) ripe tomatoes. I originally painted her for my Three Musketeers collection, as she seemed fairly period neutral, but I decided in the end she fit in better in the Victorian age after all, so I rebased her (again).

Riiiipe tomatoes. Buy 'em before they spoil!

Seriously, buy'em now!

The base figure is Lemax' apple vendor and her basket of apples, but painting them as tomatoes just seemed to fit. I've also aged her quite a bit with the repainting and I think it suits her.

I remember when I used to be young and was selling apples.

The size fits in perfectly too.

Watson, I believe I may have discovered an entirely new type of tomato disease on this woman's offerings!

Privates Alfred Henry Hook and Frederick Hitch were awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in 1879, after the battle of Rorke's Drift against overwhelming Zulu forces. They continued to serve and were with the 24th regiment when they were called upon to join Her Majesty's Finest.

From hordes of Zulus to hordes of Zombies

Both figures are prepainted toy soldiers made by Thomas Gunn. I have only adapted the bases to fit in with my other figures. The characters are based on actual heroes of the battle of Rorke's Drift.

The Chinese community in London has expanded tremendously over the last few years and more and more oriental stalls are popping up on the Lodon market. A popular stall caters to exotic plants and fruits, especially the aptly named mandarins.

Why buy rotten tomatoes when you can grow your own plants bearing more exotic fruits?

King and Country flower stall set (now retired) comes with a vendor and a small, but nicely detailed stand. I only changed the base on the vendor to match my other figures:

Watering your plants regularly keeps them healthy!

The mandarin seller is an older King and Country model and the skintone is more yellow. I may or may not decide to try and change the skintone, but for now, he will be fine. The base was changed to match the rest of the collection.

Private Liam Hamstead has been with the 1st battalion of the York & Lancaster Regiment since the mid seventies, and was posted in India until 1882. After that, they were moved to Aden to be held in reserve for the Egyptian Campaign, and subsequently shipped to Sudan at the start of 1884. One day after their arrival, they came under gun fire and made a bayonet charge, capturing two Krupp guns. Prviate Hamstead was instrumental in that feat. He continued to serve with the regiment until he was drafted into Her Majesty's Finest.

Private Hamstead reenacting the bayonet charge

The model is a prepainted W. Britain figure. Not a favourite, but it fits in well enough and adds some more diversity to the unit. The base was changed to match the other figures. The character was made up, though the events mentioned did take place.

Private Hamstead shown here among the other members of Her Majesty's Finest:

Captain Frederick Gustavus Burnaby joined the Royal Horse Guards in 1859. His service would take him allover the world. In 1875, he travelled with General Gordon in the Sudan and then journeyed across the Russian Steppes on horseback. In 1876-78 he travelled through Asia Minor and Armenia, which he would write about in 'On Horseback through Asia Minor'. In 1882 he crossed the Channel to Normandy alone in a balloon, which was a first. He was fluent in several foreign languages, stood for parliament (twice), published several books and was generally admired by the London ladies.    Barely surviving a spear at the battle of Abu Klea in the Sudan on 17th January 1885 (he was in fact officially reported killed in action), he was offered a place among "Her Majesty's Finest" after his recovery.

Captain Burnaby, in the thick of the fight

The figure is a prepainted one from John Jenkins Designs, with the base raised and repainted  to match the other figures. Despite the epic details of his life, captain Burnaby is an actual historical character and the figure was made to represent him. The real captain however did not survive the spear at Aby Klea.

It's a combination of having had some time off work to paint and using models that come prepainted to a good standard as the base for half the project. Now that I'm back at work and almost through my stash of the prepaints, the pace will slow down.

Though I did work some more on several conversions today, which will be ready for paint before long.

You'd be forgiven for mistaking the bespectacled Li Peng for a somewhat dull, but overall harmless old man. He is, after all, a bookkeeper and spends most of his time surrounded by papers and ink. However, this bookkeeper is none other than Fu Man Chu's personal accountant and secretary. His pen is just as often used to write a death sentence as to scribble down numbers. Most of Fu Man Chu's underlings have learned not to offend him as it has been said occasionally a name ends up on that death list that hasn't been ordered by the master.

Thank you for the praise.

I love creating something that is unique and will differ from other collections. I have a very large (unpainted) collection for this setting in 28mm, but as it's mostly stock models anyone can buy and paint, I switched to the larger scale when the lightbulb came on. Part of the fun is finding figures in very different ranges (and scales) that will work with the project, with some tweaking, and making something coherent out of the whole. I have many more things planned for this collection, so I'm just getting started.

As is more apparent on the blog (http://"https://victorianhorrorfigures.blogspot.be/2017/10/the-vicky-horror-figure-show.html") I made for this project, the figures I've shown so far have been assigned to different "factions". Not all the factions have been shown yet, as I still need to convert/paint the models for them. The idea is to have 7-12 figures per faction and then a whole bunch of civilians and carriages/cabs to populate the streets. Of course I'll need to build some houses and scenery to use as a backdrop. Then the storytelling can begin (or I'll have butterfly'd on to something else).

I started collecting along the same lines for a 'BPRD/Hellboy 40mm' project building several different factions for if/when my eyes cannot tolerate 28's any more.
It is fun trying to source suitable material in the scale, I agree.

Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show (update 20/11: Boss Wang)
Post by: white knight on November 20, 2017, 07:04:29 PM
Fu Man Chu has made extensive use of the various Tong gangs active in Chinatown and beyond. One such gang is boss Wang's. Having grown up on the streets of Shanghai before making the journey into the west, boss Wang made his way from petty street thief to the leader of one of the most ruthless gangs prowling the streets of London. These days, he rarely goes out with his men, prefering to lead from his headquarters, but he does like to hand out his own brand of justice to enemies and traitors that are brought before him. Styling himself a bit of a modern businessman, rather than the thug he is at heart, he rarely goes anywhere without his secretary by his side.

Boss Wang's secretary and occasional mistress.

Both figures are from King and Country in their streets of old Hong Kong range. I modified and repainted the bases to match my other figures, but otherwise, they are straight from the box. Boss Wang was initially the client from the barber set (the barber became the sorceror Wei Long Wu, while his secretary came with the street scribe set (the scribe becoming Fu Man Chu's accountant, Li Peng).

Great read through. The repaints are surprisingly effective.  Are you looking to do low relief type stuff for the buildings to reduce space requirements, etc or go the whole hog with complete buildings.

Those cheapish Christmas figures are gold for this type of project. Not all are equally nice, but some are fantastic sculpts.

Regarding buildings, I'd like to do both. A row of façades/half depth buildings for the back of the board and then some full ones for the rest. One thing I've considered as a base to build on for the full ones are the 1/24 lasercut doll houses from Petite Properties. They only need some detail work and texturing to finish them off. Though perhaps I'll have some masters made of the essentials (doors, windows, decorative trim) and get those cast in resin for some quickbuilds.

Glad to see your inclusion of a particular favorite of mine,  Fred Burnaby (reputedly the strongest officer in Her Majesty's HM Army), among your adventurers (and he looks much the better for his little sojourn down the Nile).  I remember reading that he took with him to Egypt  a large bore shotgun for potting the odd Mahdist, and that his choice of side-arm (in addition to his heavy cavalry saber) was a 4-barrel Lancaster pistol ("howdah pistol") .

Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show (update 20/11: Invisible Man)
Post by: white knight on November 26, 2017, 04:41:02 PM
Another custom model today.

Hawley Griffin was a skilled research scientist who discovered a formula that makes a human being invisible. As all slightly mad scientists do, he tried it out on himself. The formula entailed taking opium and another drug, which made his blood clear, then processing him in a radiator engine. It succeeded, but he quickly found himself unable to reverse the process. Realising not only that his normal life was over, but also the potential for living a life of debauchery free of consequence, Griffin quickly came to embody the worst aspects of the Victorian male.

The invisible man, dressed for a night out on the town, or at least, the start on one.

A psychopathic murderer, rapist, and traitor to mankind, Griffin had to be coerced into joining up with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and he doesn't hide the fact he feels little to no loyalty towards his fellow team members. A monster among men indeed.

(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9aTfVl5DVao/WhrnPYghIBI/AAAAAAAAD0s/DyOUtvBoQI4wVohtGAWuqARDoWZNMY2mQCLcBGAs/s1600/Griffin4.jpgAheheh... careful Miss Harker, you won't see me coming, you know...)

He may not be a team player, but it doesn't occur to Griffin that other Extraordinay Gentlemen may have a trick up their sleeves of their own.

Wha...what are you looking at?

The members of the team so far, with the newest addition

The concept for the model was taken from the League group foto from the graphic novel. The reason I went with more of a taupe colour for the suit than the grey from the image is that I used the same base figure as for my Dracula model and I didn't want them to end up looking too similar.

The base model was the gentleman from the Lemax "attending services" set again. I removed the head and hands, repositioned the right arm, built up the shirt collar and sleeve so it would look hollow and built him a new cane from a piece of paperclip and some putty. The hat was cut off from the head and glued to his side, so he would appear to hold it next to his body.

Don't lose your head!

The Dracula I made earlier from the same figure is slightly bigger because I bulked out his arms and legs with putty, as well as broaden his shoulders and hips. I didn't do that on Griffin as I figured it would help to differentiate the two models a bit more.

Your Invisible Man is a brilliant repupurposing of the figure.   The base figure appears very versatile, and with the addition of a rifle and suitable painting could also serve as the basis of a Major Moran.

That *is* a good idea actually. If my other idea for Moran doesn’t pan out, I may try that. Or just use the head on another body. I agree it’s a versatile figure, I picked up spares because it’s so useful.

I actually do have a figure from Luville to try out, but it’s much smaller, so now I’m not sure whether that particular figure is just a young girl instead of an adult or if they are all smaller.

Not all the inhabitants of London are heroic characters, dastardly villains or lurking monsters. Mostly, the city's denizens are made up of ladies and gentlemen, the working class, beggars, thiefs and orphans. Here we have a member of the London fire brigade. Of course, his helmet and tools make him more than equiped to handle himself in a scrap, be it with out-on-their-luck ruffians or mindless zombies stalking the streets.

The figure is a repainted Del Prado figure. They have a range consisting solely of firemen from different eras and nationalities and this one was just perfect for the setting. I wouldn't be surprised if, like the medieval range, King & Country supplied the sculpting on these as it fits in perfectly. The original paintjob was not quite up to standard, so I painted over it to match the rest of the collection.

Rumours are spreading of zombies shambling through the fog in the late hours in the poor quarters. According to whispered gossip, the Hellfire Club would be to blame for this new calamity. The mindless fiends seem to amble aimlessly, only spurred into activity by the proximity of the living, whom they will feast on givenhalf a chance. Their bite is said to spread the contagion and turn the victim into another zombie, either immediately if the bite is fatal or after a few hours or up to a few days if the wound is minor. Thankfully, they are slow... for now...

This lady probably had a different kind of night in mind, given her fancy dress. A grizzly wound on her arms tells us where the zombie got to her and traces of blood smeared around her mouth and on her clothes indicate she has fed recently...

The figure is a slightly converted Lemax figure from their Halloween range. The original model is supposed to be a young lady enthralled by a vampire. She had her eyes closed, so I resculpted them to be open and added some wear and tear (bitewound on her arm where it was miscast due to an airbubble and a tear in her dress). She was then repainted to match the other figures and her dress was dirtied at the hem, with random smears of dried blood.

Thank you gentlemen. She's only the first of many. Many more Lemax and possibly other figures will get cannibalized to create a horde of Victorian zombies for Her Majesty's Finest to battle.

Though this figure was a nice one and very suitable, I'm a bit disappointed in the quality of the sculpts and castings in the Halloween range, they aren't anywhere near as good as the Victorian Christmas stuff, so most of the other zombies will come from the latter.

The strange events unfolding in London have attracted concern and interest from foreig powers, including the President of the United States, who dispatched some of his best Secret Service agents: the fearless and handsome James T. West and Artemus Gordon, a brilliant gadgeteer and master of disguise. Their unending mission is to protect the President and the United States from all manner of dangerous threats.

James West had served as an intelligence and cavalry officer in the US Civil War on the staff of Ulysses Grant. His cover is that of "a dandy, a high-roller from the East, though after years in the Service, his reputation as the foremost Secret Service agent often precedes him.

Artemus Gordon, who was a captain in the Civil War, had also been in show business. His many inventions and disguises prove invaluable tools to complement West's brazen courage and combat skills.

James West is a minor conversion of a Del Prado gambler figure. Some minor adjustments to the hat and chin (the original had a square face that just didn't match the character well enough) and a suitable paintjob are all it took. Artemus Gordon is a standard King & Country civilian figure that only had his base repainted. They are inpsired by the original TV-show of course, not that Will Smith travesty of later years.

Narayan Singh was a distinguished veteran with the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs who was chosen to represent his regiment on Her Majesty's Finest. The 15th are an infantry regiment in the British Indian Army, that can trace its origins to 1846, when they were known as the Regiment of Ludhiana . During the Indian Mutiny they were relied upon to hold Benares throughout the period of the Mutiny. They became the 15th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry (Ludhiana Sikhs) in 1885.

Rumour goes the controversial Captain Nemo served with the regiment for a while, though this seems unlikely, given his view on what he deems the British colonial oppression.

Narayan Singh is a stock model from King & Country's "Sons of the Empire" range and only had his base repainted to match the rest. While not exactly a famous character from history or fiction, there was indeed a Narayan Singh serving with the 15th in that period of time.

Like many other foreign powers, the USA have taken an interest in the strange occurrings in London and have dispatched some members of the Secret Service to investigate. Setting up temporary headquarters in the American Embassy, they are lead by experienced agents James West & Artemus Gordon.
While these gentlemen are more than suited to the task, the President in his wisdom, decided not to send them into the occult kettle that London has become without some army backup. One such soldier is the native scout, Sniffing Bear. Hopefully his tracking skills will be just as effective in smogfilled London as on the open prairies...

Well, I envision London as being the focal point where all sort of occult powers and creatures are being drawn too. Perhaps because it has been built over a Hellmouth (which makes me think I may have to source a vampireslaying victorian teen girl and her bookish companion/mentor), so it makes sense that some of the other great powers want to keep an eye on it as what happens there might endanger the rest of the world too. As I grew up watching the Wild Wild West show, they were an obvious choice. I have some more figures making their way to me to add to this team.

Oh yes, I need to do a Quincey Morris and the other characters from the party that went up against Dracula (already have two options for Van Helsing waiting to get done). And the Penny Dreadful gang is also tempting, I already have ideas for how to do Miss Vanessa Ives and Ethan Chandler.

Seeing that you have discovered and mined the rich vein of Del Prado's Old West line, are you also aware that they have an "Italian Wars" line ?  Could form the basis for some foreign opponents/allies (they have a nice dismounted Prussian dragoon, 1870, who differs hardly a whit from an Imperial German of two decades later, a nice Austro-Hungarian officer, and a fine French Zoave).  Comparatively cheap price point, too.
Title: Re: 1888 - The Vicky Horror Figure Show (update 4/2: Vampire bats)
Post by: white knight on February 04, 2018, 04:41:14 PM
It is said Dracula's power extends to controling the creatures of the night. Large vampire bats have been spot in the city and unlike normal bat behaviour, they have been attacking humans without fear or hesitation. There are some who whisper these aren't true bats at all, but lesser vampires who have learned to transform into giant bats, though such claims have not been verified so far. One thing is for certain, alive or undead, they are ferocious creatures best avoided.

Three giant vampire bats on the prowl

The original models are retired 28mm giant bats made by Masquerade Miniatures, probably as Warhammer proxies. Being as big as humans in 28mm means they are still a respectable child-sized monstrosity in 60mm and the added wingspan makes them a terrifying sight indeed. I had to sightly convert them to remove some off-scale details and then rebase them to match my other figures. I added a repainted Lemax fire hydrant as a support for one of them, which also helped to raise him at eye-height for the 60mm humans.

Attacking bat, with fire hydrant.

The American Secret Service foothold in the center of the vast British Empire could not be maintained without some solid backup in the form of veteran federal soldiers. Hank, Bill and Ulysses are three such distinguished troopers. They are no stranger to human conflict, but the foes they will face in the streets of London are something else altogether...

Chocolate Factory Gang - Willy Wonka

Wonka's chocolate factory had been locked for many years after other candy makers, including rival Arthur Slugworth, sent in spies to steal his recipes. Willy Wonka became a recluse, seldom seen. But all that changed recently. The factory was reopened and five golden tickets were hidden in chocolate Wonka bars. Finders of the tickets were promised a factory tour and a lifetime supply of chocolate. Willy Wonka himself has been spotted on the corners of the London streets, offering candy to street urchins. But while he looks like a kindly, if somewhat eccentric gentleman, rumours start to arise. Some say not all of those who entered his factory with the golden tickets returned and that those who did have now taken up residence in Bedlam. And what about those stunted shadowy figures that are often reported around the area's he has visited?

The figure is one I had especially sculpted and then moulded and cast in resin for this project in 60mm. The size is compatible with the likes of King & Country and John Jenkins Designs. The paintjob is of course inspired by the Gene Wilder version of the character.
