Hi gents,
I finished the first 9 of the 'new' Late War Americans, sculpted by Mr. Hicks and released by Empress.
These miniatures are hands down the most realistic and most detailled I've seen so far for the WWII in 28mm. I made my entry into WWII with the still excellent Artizan miniatures, but these are another thing altogether in terms of equipment detail.
I love the variation and the rag-tag look with grenades attached to the webbing, winter hats underneath the helmets and different ammo pouches.
Although the many details are really nice and make the miniatures stand out once painted, during thr progress of getting these finished I nearly went insane...highlighting endless straps and buttons and stuff can get really tedious ;D
Base-wise I went for a late autumn kinda style, enabling me to use them for both the Hurtgen Forest and the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, as well as some February 1945 Sauer-crossing settings ;) After having painted up quite a few miniatures for the Bulge with snowy bases I wanted to do something else.
After much rambling, here is the finished result:

I hope you like them! :)
To be continued with the HMG team, both displacing and set up.
Little teaser:

Great job. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Very good.
I look forward to seeing the HMG teams.
-
Lovely painting, and the basing sets them off a treat :-*
-
They really are lovely looking figures. I might have to do a US infantry platoon after all (I've only got a US armoured infantry platoon).
-
Very nice work if I was tempted to do a US force they would be my figure of choice too
-
Beautifully done. Really looking forward to seeing the hmg base finished.
-
Those look fantastic! Thank you for the kind words. They were great fun to sculpt. Just putting the finishing touches to some heavy weapons for the GIs before I start on some more Germans!
-
Excellent painting. They look very realistic.
-
Lovely work.....looking forward to seeing how your platoon developes

They are beautiful sculpts. I'd love someone to commission you to do a Vietnam range like those.
-
:o Awesome!
-
Ooh! More Germans Paul? Is that some more packs on the late war Volksgrenadier line? Any hints gratefully received 8)

-
Posing and animation i spot on! Great expressions too.....these guys have definitely seen some action already! Really looking forward to see how this range develops!
-
Top paint work on top sculpts :D
Out of interest why are some olive green and others a blue/gray/green ? The latter would seem to be close to the Foundry German Field Grey palette ... but also close to the 1960s US Army shirt that I have in a cupboard somewhere

Those guys turned out great. I Finally got around to basing mine, so hopefully will start painting them some time this week.
Is any one else having problems seeing the second image?
-
Hi guys,
I made a bit of progress on my late War Americans, some more riflemen, a radio operator (I love that miniature :-*) and the first bazooka:

I hope you like them! Next up: Sherman tank and a little extra (hint: thing saving private Ryan, Ramelle and a some bizarre kind of transportation ;) )
I also bought all the new Empress releases for the Volkdgrenadiers and can't wait to start on these!
More soon!
Cheers

Nice work, lovely minis :)
-
Brilliant work on some fantastic miniatures 8) 8)
-
Very nice.
-
Lovely work, you should do a tutorial or at least list the paints and techniques used so that we can all have a go at creating something so good :-* :-*
-
Ace work on some lovely miniatures!
-
Thank you all!
I will post a list for the different uniform colors soon!
Meanwhile I finally did a bit of a scenic set-up once again, inspired by the incredible work of HVM and moiterei:

Nothing short of spectacular! Really like the sense of drama and acton you‘ve created in these pictures.
-
They look even better "on the table" so to speak, and I look forward to seeing what paints you used :)
-
They paint up nicely, and I love the still shots of the GI' s pushing through the Gustav line.
-
Superb! Amazing work on some simply stunning figures! Please..please....please keep it up!
-
Your figures are really great.
The photos are ace, love them.
-
Stunning work and the scenic pictures are brilliant!
-
Fantastic painting and pictures!
-
Nice work.
-
Thank you!
Here is a list of the paints used, most are Reaper Paints (I buy them from wargaming heroes in the UK), as these paints have excellent coverage and dry very matt. There is a huge range of different colors.
Uniforms
- the greenish Grey, inspired by the M1943 Jackets is:
* Highland Moss + Peacock Green + Black
* Highland Moss + Pale Lichen
* Final highlights with the previous mix and added Iraqi Sand (VMC)
- the Olive Green, inspired by other variant of the M1943 (the colors seem to vary a lot on the pictures):
* Olive Shadow + Peacock Green +Black
* Olive Shadow + Olive Drab (3:1)
* Previous mix + Worn Olive
* Previous mix + Iraqi Sand (VMC)
Webbing
* Citadel Khemri Brown (OOP unfortunately, it's basically a more greyish Earthtone) followed by a Wash of Agrax Earthshade (or similar)
* Khemri Brown plus progressively more 'Leather White' by Reaper (this Leather White is like a reallyyyyy bright grey that has a tiny speck of Earth in it, which means it is not completely grey/cold)
Brown Pants
* Any dark brown, followed by a black Wash
* Your dark Brown + Basic Dirt (Reaper)
* Highlights with Shield Brown, plus in a following step Iraqi Sand
Don't worry if you don't have all these paints exactly, the most important part is to start from a rather dark color which will becomme the shadows, and then jump to a comparatively a lot brighter color. This gives you loads of contrast. You then put on a few highlights that are relatively close to this base color to get smooth tranisitions and finally make a big 'jump' in brightness for the final highlight, focussing only on a very few select spots, which again gives you good contrast.
Hope this might help! ;)

Thanks Gunslinger, it's a bit of work I know but it's how we all learn to paint to better standards :)
Looking forward to seeing some more of your work, especially those Empress Germans.
-
Thanks for sharing this with us :)

Seconded....particularly in reference to seeing your Empress Germans!

Hi,
a small update before the US mortars and Volksgrenadiers, a conversion for a 'stolen' Kettenkrad, using the Empress Jeep Crew Figures and a bit of greenstuff:
Let me know what you think!
More to follow very soon!
-
Well done - these are fantastic :-*
-
Great little conversion. :)
-
Brilliant idea - love it!
PS your US troops look brilliant. Can’t wait to see the opposition (and I’m not a WW2 gamer!).

Hi guys,
it has been a while, but I'm back on track! After having painted some GIs already, I think it's now time to also start on the Germans.
I started with a Sd Kfz, which I recently bought and after over a dozen miniatures it was also time for a vehicle.
Now I have only painted two 20mm tanks until now, where the surfaces are quite small and can be easily painted with a brush. 28mm is quite something else in my opinion. After reading tons of articles and looking at great examples of painted vehicles, I had the color scheme and the effects I wanted to do more or less figured out.
I also converted a gunner for the MG from some of the Empress miniatures Volksgrenadiers and modified the canvas cover to look a bit more realistic:
I tried to achieve the color modulation look some painters do by creating gradients. This was done by classic blending, a bit of drybrushing and some very thin washes:
I really have to get an airbrush at one point, as this is really tedious o_o
More progress soon, I have so much fun I can barely stop lol
More on the Kettenkrad soon aswell!
-
Nice conversion.
The paint job on the second half-track looks like it is progressing well.
-
Very nice indeed! Particularly liking the MG gunner!
-
Very nice conversion : simple, but very effective.
And the painted one is beautiful. :-*
-
Cracking thread
Looking forward to seeing your finished vehicles
-
Thanks all!
Here is the now finished halftrack:

The kit itself is by Rubicon, but I modified the canvas cover and added stowage and extra track links. The gunner is a conversion using parts from the new Empress miniatures Volksgrenadier range!
Let me know what you think!
Now back to the american captured Kettenkrad and some Volksgrenadiers on foot.

Great miniatures and great painting!!

Cracking stuff 8) 8) 8)
-
Very well done, sir !
You've done a wonderful paintjob on this vehicle, and the details bring some life to this mini.
-
Excellent.
-
Simple yet elegant conversion! Superb stuff!
-
Superb work!
-
Excellent Marc. Just the right amount of battering. Great job :-*
-
Cheers Guys!
New update - a 'stolen' Kettenkrad, inspired by Saving Private Ryan:

This was so much fun to do!
Next up a few Volksgrenadiers and then on to some US armour!
-
These are beautifully done, and your scenery just sets them off a treat. If you enter them in the next LAF painting league I would expect you to be somewhere near the top, at the very least making some of the 'old hands' on here sit up and take notice anyway!
-
Excellent.
Who makes the Kettenkrad?
-
Bloody brilliant 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Sooo nice!
-
Those Empress Miniatures are really top notch, especially with that superb painting style of yours
-
Thanks gents!
@ultravanillamurf: The Kettenkrad per se is by Warlord Games, the driver is converted using the Warlord (german) body and an Empress head. The guy in the back is from the Empress Jeep crew - lovely poses and variety in equipment on those!
-
Thanks.
-
Hi folks,
an update with some of the new Empress' Volksgrenadiers (the absolutely most beautiful miniature I've ever painted), an SdKfz251 and some terrin (noteably Fogou's excellent ruins)
Cheers
-
Wow - amazing
-
Fantastic painting, composition and photography. Top stuff :-*
-
Great work! I am very tempted to buy those Empress Minis....I held off at Salute...but they look so good that I might just give into the dark forces and give them a try. How do they compare size-wise to other WW2 ranges?
-
Just plain wonderful! I have to agree, those Empress miniatures are fabulous, as is the rest of their stuff, but it’s your painting that really is the star here :-*
-
That's excellent :o
-
Very good.
-
Wow. That is some bully paint job.
-
How many times can I say, "love the Germans."
Let me count the ways.
(If I did, I would be up all night.) lol

Superb :)

Excellent painting, saved to the ‘inspiration’ folder.
-
Stunning :o :o :o
-
lovely painting and lovely composition
-
Stunning work atmospherically photographed.....superb!
-
Just wonderful!
-
Hi do we have a size comparison between Empress and Artizan cheers AL
-
Hi,
yes! The Empress minis are almost the same height, but they are slimmer and in my opinion a bit more realistically proportioned. The miniatures are also more detailled, the equipment (webbings, side arms etc.) is spelndid!
-
Thanks Slinger thats good news and thanks for the comparison pic.
Cheers AL

Hi LAFers,
time again to update this thread! This time with a few more GIs, having painted so many germans lately.
The BAR gunner is a conversion, basing on a .30cal gunner, whose barrel broke off. I decided to make the bigger base into a small vignette.
I'm not too happy with the pictures, they come out quite "flat" unfortunately!
Thanks for watching!
-
No idea how I could miss this topic - top notch work there!
-
Bloody brilliant! Painting is top notch as always and the scenic base for the BAR gunner is just stunning. Keep it up!
-
Lovely work once again. The Bar team looks great!
-
Nice paint job.
-
Top notch painted and love this little diorama with the BAR :-*
-
Pffffff *blows dust away*
Well, it's been a while once again! Painting a lot of ancients last year, I was determined to paint more WW2 in 2019. I got sidetracked in the beginning of the year, delving back into LOTR, but now I'm back on track (after seeing Ash's brilliant Late War Brits).
These are of course again from the glorious Empress miniatures!
I also commissioned a few buildings with Oshiro Models, which are absolutely gorgeous.
Finally, a good friend scultped and 3 D printed a small civilian car for me.
All of this, below in a scenic shot:
I will post pictures of the different elements in front of a neutral background in the next days and hope to continue on this nice roll I'm on to finish this squad and start the next.
Cheers!
-
These guys look great and the photos are superb.
I just picked up some of these blokes at Salute, looking forward to getting stuck in.
-
Brillant painting and a very atmospheric photo! :)
I especially like the way you painted the tan water camo - I think the look is very hard to capture and you did a splendid job!
-
Pffffff *blows dust away*
Awesome! What a great project to come back to.
-
Hell, I missed the last post you did in 2018. So seeing your BAR Yanks and new Volksgrenadiers is a double treat.

Thanks gents!
Some progress! I finished the second squad of these guys! Again such lovely miniatures by Empress and marvellous sculpts by Mr. Hicks. I try to bring a lot of variety into these to get that late War feel.
I hop e you like it!
Some support weapons are on the table and then it's back to Middleearth again :)

Fantastic! Puts my effort to shame :o
Loving the mix of camo in that lot too.

Absolutely brilliant. Love the camo.
My next job will be trying to master swamp pattern 🤔
