My wife has bought me some cars from the "Mad Maximillian" range by Eureka Miniatures. Anyhow, I'm not allowed to have them until Christmas so I decided to have a go at building one myself. It's a Diecast Bugatti with scratch-built twin machineguns. I'm still deciding on a pilot but will probably end up using one of the Eureka ones.

I will add more vehicles to this thread as I go.

Very nice. You manage to always do a very fine red on your work.
-
Great start, love it :-*
The red is really amazing.
-
Beautiful painting :-* :-* Like everyone else I am blown away by your red painting on this car!
-
Excellent work your Bugatti racer! :-*
-
Now that's just too beautiful to kill :o
-
The Road Baron!
-
Love it. Let the blood run free.
-
Lovely work on these! I must say seeing what you end up doing with my car designs will probably be a Christmas gift for me as well.
-
Thanks gents. I'm looking forward to receiving the "official" models.
The Road Baron!
Spot on! lol
I must say seeing what you end up doing with my car designs will probably be a Christmas gift for me as well.
With what little time I had to check your designs (before my wife hid them) I was very impressed and look forward to getting some paint down on them.

This is honestly quite bizarre... last night, as I began to doze off, I thought of the diecasts I've picked up for Max '34, including a trio of Bug's... and I was contemplating doing one up as if Von Richtofen had survived the Great War and taken to four wheels.
I come on LAF today, and find this thread... ???

You know what they say about great minds...... :)
Anyhow I just completed another vehicle. This time it is Dick Dastardly's "Mean Machine".
It is a converted 1/43 Blitzen Benz from Brumm with added rockets, light cannon and tail fin.

I haven't fitted the crew yet. They are a converted Artizan mini and a Mantic Throwing Mastiff to act as Muttley!

I will post some shots with crew fitted and based shortly.
I also have also completed my Red Baron mini for the bugatti which I will also post shortly.

Both cars are great.
Love both colors you painted them.
-
Another great show!
The red is reminiscent of those Chaos Dwarfs - lovely colour.
And the crew of the Mean Machine (not to mention the car itself) are great. Good job on Muttley in particular!
-
These cars are wonderful, and the dog! That's the show stealer.
-
Lovely work 8)
-
Beautiful work on both cars and the Dick Dastardly & Mutley crew are truly wonderful.
-
Excellent brushwork!
-
Lovely machine! Though I must admit I always saw Muttley as a bit more conniving type. ;p
-
There's some love work going here. I think Dick Dastardly's car is my favourite partly for the colour and partly for the tail fin.
It's one of those projects I've always fancied doing but never quite found the time. So I'll be watching for more.(I always mused making mine with a human Muttly though.)
Mark.
-
Just brilliant.
Lovely conversion of Group Captain Villain.
-
Thanks gents, I'm glad you like it.
Here's some pics with Dastardly and Muttley fitted.

Penelope Pitstop?
The Turbo Terrific?
I can hardly wait.

Absolutely brilliant 8) :D 8) :D 8)

Only just seen this thread. Awesome stuff, Dick and Muttley? what's not to love :-* ;D

TRIPLE DRAT!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Thank you all for your comments. I really enjoyed doing this one.
I have a few more in the pipeline ( Peter Perfect, Penelope Pitstop and possibly the Ant Hill Mob)
I also have some "themed" cars in mind ( holy avenger, British fighter ace, masked hero)
I've completed my driver for the Red Eagle. He's a converted Copplestone Pilot miniature.

It's a very atmospheric model.
At the risk of sounding negative (observation not criticism).
Now you've added a driver. The windscreen stands out as an after thought, although you added it much earlier in its production.
Simply because you've Put so much effort into the car and driver. That the framing around the screen and where it joins the body stand out because its unpainted.

Thanks Mark, Comments are always appreciated ( plus and minus). Very good point about the screen, I will get on it with my best detailing brush ( although I could do with new eyes!).

Wow! Gotta love that red! :-* Great work! 8)

I really like the driver, perfect palette to go with that amazing deep red car :-* :-*. Now that Mark has pointed it out though, just a thin edge of steel around that windscreen - or not just to emphasize the perfection of the rest!

Hi
I see you're using Brumm 1/43 diecasts - does this mean that Nic's mini's are also of that sort of proportion/scale? I've been collecting up a few 1/50 'ish diecasts on evil-bay, assuming that the MM1934 driver/passenger mini's would slot in, but am now wondering if I should have gone more "heroic" in my scale choice. I usually find 1/43 to be too big for my liking with 28's and 1/56 "true scale" too small so generally head for 1/48-1/50 or thereabouts.
Any feedback, from anyone, welcome
Cheers

We prefer 1:48 for our vehicles and planes when we can get it. But alot of times we use stuff that "looks close enough" instead of being too concerned about the numbers...

Hi Mila
I very much appreciate your reply but I guess my question was really more about whether or not I'm physically going to be able to fit the drivers and passengers into 1/48 -1/50 scale cars if they're built to fit 1/43.
Very best,
Joe
-
Most of the passengers/drivers we have picked up through the years fit quite nicely in 1/48 scale vehicles. Although, some do take a bit more encouraging than others.
In general, I think it is a little easier/cheaper to find cars in 1/43 scale, such as the Models of Yesteryear series.
-
It should also be noted that in the 30's period there were some truly ridiculously large cars in this style. (see example) so using cars a scale or 2 up wouldn't look out of place. The Eureka cars were never really designed with a specific scale in mind, more of a style and some hefty imagination. The drivers fit perfectly with Bob Murch Pulp Figures in size and scale, I hope that helps a bit?

That Fiat S76 actually is from 1911, but I echo the sentiment. Huge, magnificent monstrosities, long before anyone cared about such bourgeois distractions as wind resistance. lol
Also, while some might consider it heresy to paint a Bugatti anything else than French racing blue or black with blue accents, that red is gorgeous.

Thanks guys and many apologies for the brief thread hi-jack. Pappa Midnight - your work is beautiful, can't wait to see more.

Such an inspiring thread. :o
Who else produces 28mm drivers? I've looked up Copplestone (pilot types) and 1st Corps. Anyone I've missed?

Hi General
Have you looked at Empress (Spanish Civil War range in their vehicles section) and Sloppy Jalopy?
All the best

Blue Moon make some 1930's style drivers/passengers that I'd recommend. And they have some cool Police drive/passengers.
And Pulp Alley has a couple that Pilots/Drivers that I like as well --- http://store.pulpalley.com/product-p/1460.htm

I've found that some of the diecast cars I've bought tend to be made to "fit the box" rather than be 100% to scale. Unfortunately they can be a little hit or miss ( some Models of Yesteryear cars are huge and don't look right) whilst others look spot on. I've been concentrating on the racing/roadster types which you can get away with ( with some artistic licence) so the scale isn't too much of an issue. Although I haven't used a Eureka Miniatures driver in any of my builds so far, I have used one for reference and it fits perfectly in the two cars I've built. 1/48 scale would be fine, but unfortunately I haven't got any 1/56 for reference ( although I have a 1st Corps roadster with a female driver coming for Christmas).
For driver types their aren't a huge number of options ( the ones I can think of have been mentioned) but the separate driver/gunner packs Eureka do are very nice. Depending on your patience and willingness to cut up 28mm minis you can always try converting some standing minis ( like the one's I have done).
Hopefully I will be making a start on my "Turbo Terrific" this weekend.

Good lord man !
Don't be wait for my stuff for a scale reference!(everyone knows I just make it up as I go along.😉)
I'll be adding some driver's and passenger sets plus a couple of customizing sets .To the follies range . The should be out in time for York in February.
Vodkafan has kindly set me some pictures to get me started.
I'd second Pappa midnights observations. I'd add if your using vehicles that aren't familiar or everyday ,then you can be a little more flexible with scaling.
Mark.

Like all your modelling endeavours, this is very inspiring stuff!
I'll be watching with great interest as I garner the courage to build the lovely models I received recently from Eureka Nic
I was contemplating getting some cheap gloss enamel sprays from the hardware to paint the bodywork and really get a pop, but after seeing these I am not so sure. Would appreciate any suggestions from the brains trust.
Papa M - you've done it again! :)

Thanks mate your comments are much appreciated. With regards to gloss enamels for the bodies, it's all down to personal choice but I find gloss paintwork at this scale makes the cars look a little too "toy like". This isn't a bad thing but I feel matt or satin finishes suit the old style look for the period. I haven't got my Eureka models yet but I am looking forward to laying some paint down on them.
I have just finished painting another car. This is another converted Brumm diecast. I just need a vicar/priest driver for it.........

Definitely getting the hang of it.
This ones the best(so far) the weapon system is more sympathetic and flows well with the exhausts.
The lettering works well on a dark field. (windscreen flows much more subtly ,it now looks part of the car rather than a part on the car).
In short I'd be more than happy with it on my table.

Agreed, though it depends. I've sourced a lot of toys for my cars and most of them came glossy, but I recoated with a bit of a satin or even matte finish and they look much more the part that way. Early coachwork was only glossy if you could REALLY afford the best - that said, I have one or two cars left glossy with just a tiny bit of light weathering (perhaps from a jaunty motoring in the countryside 'round the estate, wot?), as they are expensive cars - limousines or the like.
-
Beautiful work! :-*
-
Some great work on diecast cars for Max 1934 here, would anyone be interested in getting in touch and having your work immortalized in print?
If so, PM me in the first instance.
-
Thank you for the comments.I'm still undecided on the driver. I'm seriously contemplating a "Puritan" complete with wide brimmed hat and buckle...
PM
-
Looks great!
Can I suggest a 'flash guard under the muzzle over the radiator?
-
I'd recommend a Nun, A large white head dress would contrast nicely with the vehicle and would draw your eye along the lettering.I think you'd be unhappy with the puritan figure once you'd put it in the drivers set. It's quite a luxurious looking vehicle. If you'd made a stark and functional looking vehicle then your puritans would look more at home.
Mark

1st corps makes a Nun riding a motorcycle

It wouldn't fit 😉

The Eureka vehicles were designed with a 28mm figure sizing in mind as this was the standard of scale discussed at the time of the projects beginning.
I can't speak for the Golden Arrow scaling as that was not designed by myself. The three original vehicles were all designed with this scale in mind as previously stated as this was also the best scale to achieve the desired outcomes.
-
The truth is that the golden arrow was a bit of a hack job on my part. ::)
The main factors were as follows:
-making it compatible with the existing tires so that the new tires would also be compatible with the old cars
-making sure the already sculpted drivers would fit, a bit of a challenge as the arrow has a very narrow driver area (not unexpected for a land speed vehicle)
-Castability of the parts, with the intent of keeping the price reasonable.
-Modularity for future variants
-
Thank you all for the comments. I agree the vehicle is a little ostentatious for a simple Puritan but I had this image of Solomon Kane bringing righteous justice to the 1930s.....
Anyhow, I have completed the driver. He's a converted Confrontation mini with a leg and arm swap.

And here he is in the driver seat:

I have just discovered this thread and am absolutely stunned.
What an amazing concept and the conversions are sublime, especially that 'priest' fella.
Inspired!
:-* :-*
-
The model has been finished off nicely.
BTW: for those who are interested the "R218" refers to Revelations 21:8........
I had to google this and have learnt that some bibles don't use "brimstone" for this passage:
http://biblehub.com/revelation/21-8.htm
And I also got all lost in Google for 15 minutes; if Solomon Kane is a Puritan then he would've used the Geneva Bible, which is close enough the King James Bible.
...
So your car is 100% historically accurate. :D
-
Thank you all very much for the comments.
@Andym: Most of the gold-work is original to the diecast model ( super shiny plastic) with a thin ink wash to pick out the details. The radiator surround was done with vallejo gold, ink washed, re-highlighted with gold and finally highlighted with a gold/silver mix ( 50/50).
@Von Lucky: The reference was to the King James Edition and the fact it would be pretty accurate for a Puritan was purely a fluke!!!! lol
Nice to see I'm not the only one who gets "lost" on Google....

Any in the works with rear firing weapons?
As YPU stated I have one of the Eureka ones with rear mounted twin machine-guns which I shall be starting shortly.
The "Brimstone Special" has rear facing flamethrower which is a little difficult to see just behind the rear axle. A nasty suprise for tailgaters!!!!

Excellent finish to all of them. I love the pose of the driver in this last one. Together with his expression, it really says grim determination.
