Title: Host of The Silver City, a small scale blog (6MM)
Post by: lord marcus on November 17, 2017, 02:27:00 AM
Greetings, my fellows.

I normally work in 20, 25, and 28mm scales. This week I started my first, and long wished for, 6mm project. An army of elves.

I've always been a fan of large scale battles, and I see 6mm as a way to recreate that. I've also never been a fan of "elves as a dying race."

So I'm making a legion of them. Nominally to play in kings of war small scale, but mostly because I want to. I will be using a mix of manufacturers. So far I have irregular, with some baccus on the way. I am open to suggestions

I've painted 52 6mm figures so far, and the pictures of progress are below.

Cool! 8)

Massed ranks of these guys will look great on the table once you get them done I reckon.

Personally, I've been charmed by 10mm some time ago, and I found it good fun to paint, although the pupils in the eyes were a pain to do! Just kidding  ;D ; I actually found the neccesarily suggestive/impressionist style of painting when doing these scales refreshing, and I really liked the experience.

I'm curious to see where you'll be taking these squeekies. Will you be doing an opposing force as well?

Yes. I am planning either a force of demons or a force of ratmen. Leaning towards demons for availability. Eventually.

Progress shot. Nothing glued down yet.

Good stuff. Thats a good big base of figures. Will it be a Horde in KoW?

Great start, they will be an impressive site when all done, that's the great thing about small scales. :)

Thanks Jambo. I think so too. It's the reason I wanted a small scale project. The plus side is getting to play huge battles of kings of war.

Got 60 swordsmen done last night. Mocked up a horde of seaguard. at this stage it's mostly about seeing how I want the units to look. Thoughts?

Looking good. I think I would spread the ranks of troops out more evenly rather than having a gap between the spears and bows. What might look good but might me a lot of work is to have the bow men snipped into singles and spread irregularly behind the spears??

I wanted to keep the regimented look because they are regular elf archers. I was going to have gladestakers in lose/ open order. You may have  good idea there though

The other thing to consider with KoW basing is whether you really want to base stuff up as hordes. You might be better basing as Regiments, then you can always position two regiment bases together to represent a horde. If you base troops as hordes, then they can only be used as hordes.

It does depend a bit on your playing style, but I found you didn't want too many hordes in your army as you could become flanked fairly easily (this was KoW1 rather than KoW2).

Thats a good point. To avoid confusion I normally make hordes seperatley from regiments. I completely understand and agree with that idea though. It's especially great if you are trying to have tactical options while saving money

I guess that's the layout I'm going with then. Cool. Now some cavalry. After this I have a few chariots to do and then my initial batch is done and I'm waiting on further packages.

What size bases are you going for with the chariots? I seem to recall that KoW large cavalry bases are huge due to the need to fit 28mm chariots on them.

75x50 for a regiment, 75x 100 for a horde. There's a chart on the "kings of war - small scale"Facebook group that I am using.

Cav, cav characters, some chariot teams:

Lovely work on the Elves. I have some of the Irregular High elves and the are one of their best ranges. The Baccus high Elves are nice but a very different style.

I used to have a page of 6mm Fantasy High Elves here but for some reason the page got missed when I updated my fantasy galleries a few years ago. I'll try and update in in the next few days as I just need to edit the photos.

If you are looking for other fantasy ranges in 6mm then have a look at Microworld and Perfect 6.

EDIT I uploaded the page here. its not perfect but hopefully it will help

I've been waiting for your high elf gallery to be updated. Do you have pics of the followers of the light stuff?

I found some microworld in my hobby closet. Unfortunately it's dwarves I don't need so I'm trying to sell it

I only have a couple on my Lotr Good alliance page. I sold a lot of them off a few years ago and then unfortunately I had a hard drive failure so I lost all the rest of my photos including more High elves. The ones I had were nice figures (spearmen, spear cmd and horsemen) but I don't know about the others in that range.

I still have a few of those figures but they are half painted so you may not get a good idea of them.

I think the newer sculpts from Microworld, Baccus and Perfect 6 are such an improvement that I wont be buying much Irregular any more. There are some good figures (like the high elves) but a lot of not so good and the cavalry horses are noticeably smaller than the others (except the High elves cavalry).

My issue with microworld and perfect 6 is twofold.

Cost/numbers, in that packs of infantry come in 60s or less for the equivalent cost of 100 or so from irregular.

They are single figures, instead of ranks, which I both like better and feel more cleanly cohesive as a unit

Update: based what i had preliminarily for the cavalry. I have the remainder of the stands for those bases on the way, so all told not too bad. There will be flock when done.

I also cut up my two remaining elf command stands to to get the standard bearers for use as army standard bearers.

I need to take my desk area apart and reorganize it for something like the 5th time.  Unfortunately though I've got a couple orders to get through before then. I guess it's stuff to fill the time between orders (until holiday or personal life interrupts)

Yes they are more expensive but I tend to use less figures on a base than I would Irregular. Some of the Irregular stuff is well, irregular!

Your High Elves look great and that is a great range

Thanks, me too.

I'll need more bases, but it will start to feel like an actual army soon.

Thankfully my MDF supplier is happy to make more and throw them in my normal weekly order.

Progress update very soon.

Cool. Another good horde of troops.

Have you decided on basing? I’d suggest keeping it a fairly light colour to lift the figures.

They are coming along very nicely - the look like an Army!

I'm still not sure about the basing - it looks very dark, which doesn't show off the figures very well. I realise that getting flock into between the ranks of figures will be hard, but perhaps painting (or dry brushing) the cast on bases the same green shade as the flock would help lift and separate the ranks of troops?

While I understand what you are trying to say and will look into it.... Why would I want massed ranks of troops to look separated?

In my view, its to increase the contrast between the troops and the base. So that the nicely painted troops stand out and can be seen. Rather than blurring into the dark brown of the base.

These are some of my 10mm troops - but hopefully give the idea of what I mean.

Especially with smaller scales it helps to lighten and brighten the colours - there is very little painted surface for the light to bounce off so you need to help it, by making things a bit brighter than they naturally are. The same idea applies with the basing - you want to increase the contrast between the figures and the base. Your figures are fairly dark, so going light with the basing, will help the figures stand out.
