Title: The Vampire's Castle: A Pulp Alley Horror AAR
Post by: oabee on November 22, 2017, 01:17:33 AM
I presented a Pulp Alley scenario on October 28 at the Pro Or Con Convention held in held in Livonia, Michigan (suburb of Detroit). I've dabbled with the Horror rules, but this time went all out. Unfortunately, the players rolled very well indeed on their horror checks and horror recovery, and horror turned out to have next to no impact on the game!  >:(

Anyway, here's the AAR. A PDF is here:

It occurred to me that the namesake of my vampire count may not be known outside of North America. Let it be known that the inspiration for Count Chokk Yula is:

And oh yes, a very special thank you to Annie of Bad Squiddo games for her EXTREMELY timely Kickstarter and superb service, which allowed me to acquire and paint the vampire, werewolf, and lovely brides for this very fun scenario. Annie, if you ever come to an American convention, PLEASE let us know so we can thank you in person! And maybe buy more of your stuff....

And another thank you to Dave Phipps: your game is a constant source of fun and amazement, and your videos are truly a joy. The players appreciated their free Fortune Cards that you were kind enough to provide me.

BTW, Mr Phipps, I was in Norman (that's Oklahoma for you non-Yanks) at the US Post Office National Center for Educational Development last week for four days of safety training. The two-hour drive to your humble abode to the north, alas, was a bit too much to conveniently negotiate, I feared, and I was a bit too busy with bidness, so I didn't contact you.  :'(

It was great being in your neighborhood, though!

Great table and game- your photos do a good job of showing off both the terrain and the models.

What a thriller! Not many scenarios beat a fistful of different cults all going at it for sheer insanity.

Thanks for that. I had not personally come across this character, so the pun floated right over my head. I am familiar with the Count from Sesame Street, but not this guy. :)

What a wonderful set up with lovely models, sadly I didn't read the AAR as for some reason when people post pictures I only see half of them & have to go to the last picture & move the page over to see the other half which make it impossible to read the story.

Could anyone tell me do they also have this problem or is it just me ? & if you did have this problem once how did you fix it ?

Figured out what was wrong so got to read your AAR & great stuff it is  :)

Beautiful table and minis, great scenario concept...first rate all around!  I have that same castle, and always enjoy seeing it in use.

I've had games like that, and also had them where nobody could pass a horror check at all, and the whole game turned into a Three Stooges movie.
 lol

Lovely set up and very impressive report. I do like that castle, I'm guessing OG is Old Glory?

Thanks for all the very kind comments!

Rags, it was reading your AARs using the castle that convinced me to purchase one!  :D

Yes. Just search for "Dracula's Castle." I got mine at Noble Knight games. Right now they have one for $56 off:

Thanks for that. I had not personally come across this character, so the pun floated right over my head. I am familiar with the Count from Sesame Street, but not this guy. :)

I am every glad that it occurred to me not to assume that Count Chocula cereal was available world-wide. Although it is one of American civilization's crowning achievements... lol

What a thriller! Not many scenarios beat a fistful of different cults all going at it for sheer insanity.

I originally had purchased the Vampire Hunters from Annie's Kickstarter and meant to use those, but I had always wanted to do an all-cult scenario so went ahead with that. They were already painted and ready to go, after all. But I am sure those Vampire Hunters, fine minis that they are, will make an appearance sooner or later... >:D

Again, I can't say enough good things about Annie and her lightning-fast service, especially considering I am in the states. As I recall, I made the decision to pick up the brides and werewolf after the Kickstarter, yet still got everything in plenty of time for the game.

Wow, that looks superb! Great table and figures. Sounds like it was a hoot to play as well.

Nice table and I enjoyed the read. Using the 4 cults was a nice touch.

I have the same problem as Panama when using a tablet to view the pictures, only see about 60%, so only just got to read this on the laptop.

I liked the ghouls, who makes them, I've not seen them before.

Cheers

The ghouls are a personal favorite of mine, and I've been waiting for a chance to use them.  >:D

Crocodile Games, WarGods of Aegyptus, in the Undead Range. You can find them at Crocodile Games here:

You can find them from a few other vendors as well.

I've reduced the size of the photos so they should display easier. If they still don't fully display, you should be able to scroll them left and right to view them. I know, it's a pain to have to do that.  o_o Or you could download the PDF link in the first post, then delete it off your device when finished with it.

Hope that helps!  :D

Another thing about Crocodile Games is that they have about 6 dozen items under the heading Icons & Artifacts that make great plot points and/or are very useful to add more pizzazz to your terrain. Most are Egyptian-themed, but not all.

A particular favorite of mine are the ravens, on the left in this photo:
